The Unmoveable Fortress! Warrior Tank PvE Guide!
Tank players are the players that hold the lives of their teammates in their hands. Luckily, Warrior tanks are absolute beasts for PvE in Classic WoW. Having multiple ways of taunting an enemy, high threat output potential, and numerous defensive cooldowns make tank Warriors a pivotal part of any raid team!
Classic Warrior Races
Because characters take longer to level and gear in Classic WoW, choosing the right race is an important part of character creation. Whether you're looking for the right aesthetics, or trying to decide on the best racial bonuses for a Warrior, our guide will help you make the right decision the first time. Remember that race changing didn't exist in Patch 1.12, so your choice is most likely permanent!
Best Horde Warrior Race
There is a bit of controversy about which of these four races is the best for tanking.
兽人
have
and
血性狂怒
that contribute significantly to their tanking. Although weapon skill is good, none of the best in slot tanking weapons are axes throughout Classic WoW. Moreover, Blood Fury, while being a very strong ability, is not used often as a tank due to the fact that it reduces incoming healing, threatening the tanks chance to survive.
亡灵
have
被遗忘者的意志
to break any fears and continue tanking, but Warriors already have a way to break fearing effects with
狂暴之怒
.
牛头人
used to be the favored race for tanking back in the day due to
耐久
and
战争践踏
. Although, when really analyzing these abilities, we can deduce that they are not actually as strong as one might believe if your raid is playing properly. Tanks should not be going to such low health to the point the 5% bonus increased health is actually needed. If so, your tank and/or healers are likely doing something wrong. War Stomp is similar in reasoning. In raids, bosses and many trash mobs are immune to stuns. The mobs that can actually be stunned, can be controlled even better by other classes. Making War Stomp not necessary, and is just a cool added bonus.
This leaves us with the last and best choice for a Horde Main Tank,
巨魔
. Trolls have several different racial abilities, but the one that makes them good tanks is
. As the main tank, it is extremely easy to activate Berserking for its maximum value, allowing you to generate massive amounts of threat, as threat generation is crucial to being a good tank. Especially on Horde when you have Fury Warriors generating a lot of aggro with Windfury procs.
Best Alliance Warrior Race
Although all four Alliance races can be warriors like Horde, it is a more simple choice than Horde.
暗夜精灵
have a passive 1% more dodge with
迅捷
, but this is not enough of an impact enough to make them the best choice.
矮人
gets a slightly better racial than Night elves with
石像形态
. Even though Stoneform is a good ability, it does not last very long and Warriors already have other cooldowns to use.
Similarly to Horde, the best option to choose is the one that can generate the most threat output and that is
人类
since they have
. Swords end up being some of the best tanking weapons you can use throughout Classic, making this passive very good. (did somebody say
雷霆之怒,逐风者的祝福之剑
?!?!?!)
Warrior Talent Builds
Unlike retail WoW, Classic uses a more traditional talent system consisting of three separate trees, which any Warrior may freely spec into. Each tree is themed to a specific specialization and requires points to be invested to progress further, with each capped by a special ability requiring 31 points. With a total of 51 points available at level 60, you could invest all of your points in one tree or spread them across multiple in order to create your own hybrid specialization and playstyle.
In this guide, we'll discuss some of the more powerful and popular builds, which talents you can't live without, and which you can afford to tailor to your preference.
Don't forget to follow along with our
Classic WoW Talent Calculator
, so that you can preview and plan out your build ahead of time.
NOTICE: One spec includes
. There is a common misconception about this. Some warriors are told NOT to talent into Deep Wounds to get to Impale because
isn't a good enough debuff to be one of the 16 debuffs and that if you have multiple Warriors with it, it will take all of the debuffs. I want to start off this portion of the guide by stating that is NOT CORRECT! Yes, each warrior will attempt to apply deep wounds when they get a critical strike.
However, in Classic WoW there are multiple different priority levels on debuffs. Low priority debuffs CANNOT knock off high priority debuffs. Deep Wounds is the lowest level priority. This means that it will never knock off a warlock curse, sunder armor, and the other crucial debuffs, as they are a higher priority. Debuff priority lists will be in another guide.
Low-Geared Deep Prot (12/5/34)
This talent build, like the title states, is a great build for early game tanking while the player is still lacking crucial pieces of raid gear. A build such as this sacrifices some threat generation in order to maximize their chance at survival with abilities like
,
破釜沉舟
,
, and maxed out
.
Although, as the Warrior starts to obtain more and more gear, this talent build loses value. When tanks gain enough gear to be able to take multiple hits without worry, they won't want to be stunning and parrying as much because that will yield less threat generation. This leads the warrior into the next tanking build.
Impale Prot (17/3/31)
The Impale build is very similar to the previous build, but trades in survival abilities for more threat generation. Instead of parrying often and stunning mobs with
, the tank starts to deal significantly more damage with the addition of
. This means that agility starts to gain more value for the tank than it did in the previous build.
Duel Wield Tank (0/32/19)
This final talent build is strictly for experienced tank players and is
NEVER
to be used during progression. This build requires the tank to have a significant amount of gear to be able to pull off properly! So, why would anyone use this spec? Well, as stated in the race selection segment, threat generation has become arguably the most important thing for tanks. Allowing your DPS players to go as hard as they possibly can at all times.
Once the main tank has enough hit rating gear, agility, crit rating, good weapons, quality defense pieces, and has reliable healers, they are ready to use this build. Although it is important to note that not all bosses do the same amount of damage and this spec is much more squishy than the ones above. This is where tanking experience comes into play. When playing this build the main tank needs to know when they can get away with more threat increasing pieces and when they need to put on more defensive pieces.
In the previous builds
is skipped because the warrior will usually have plenty of defensive gear. In this duel wield build, the tank wants to wear as many threat generating pieces as possible and not pieces with defense rating, making this talent great to pick up. Although this build does not use shields, the tank still needs to stay in Defensive Stance. Meaning that keeping
is still incredibly important.
The last talent that needs to be mentioned is the reason that this build requires a lot of gear and that is
. Flurry is one of the main reasons that this build generates so much threat, but if the tank does not have enough hit rating, agility, or crit rating, their flurry up-time will be very low. Making it not worth going this build yet.
Essential Warrior Consumables for Raid
Consumables are a vital part of Classic WoW, particularly in end-game raiding. With a gigantic pool of potential enhancements, there are multiple different consumables that you can use to improve your performance, as well encounters that rely on specific consumables for success! That means that depending on where your group is heading off, there are different consumables that should be brought, and lots of items to keep up with in Classic WoW.
For more information about consumables, including extensive lists of consumables needed for different raids and encounters, check out our
Classic WoW Consumable Overview
.
NOTICE: Tanks have the most consumables required to play optimally out of all the rolls in Classic WoW!
For Warriors, the essential consumable list looks like this for a single attempt:
猫鼬药剂
魂能之击
迪尔格的超美味奇美拉肉片
or
沙漠肉丸子
魂能之速
魂能之力
强效怒气药水
坚韧药剂
超强防御药剂
魂能之灰
for bosses with heavy fire damage.
魂能之遁
for bosses that enrage or use heavily threatening abilities such as
from
勒什雷尔
.
保护卷轴 IV
防御水晶
尖刺水晶
for AoE tanking
强效石盾药水
泰坦合剂
赞扎之魂
after Zul'Gurub is released.
特效治疗药水
and
鞭根块茎
.
戈多克绿酒
Classic Warrior Professions
Professions are an important part of Classic WoW, offering useful benefits to players dedicated enough to maximize their potential. Whether crafting and enchanting pieces of gear, supplying your own consumables, or utilizing unique gadgets, professions can considerably enhance your gameplay. You can learn more about all professions in our
Classic WoW Professions Overview
.
Tanks in Classic WoW have one single profession that they must absolutely pick up and that is
工程学
. It is able bring for additional damage or utility for your raid using items such as
致密炸弹
,
侏儒作战小鸡
, and
奥金机械幼龙
. However, the main reasons tanks need engineering is due to
地精工兵炸药
and
力反馈盾牌
. Both of these items are absolutely essential to not only instantly grabbing AoE threat with the Goblin Sapper Charge, but holding that AoE threat with the procs from Force Reactive Disk!
To complement engineering most warriors end up picking up
采矿
to support themselves getting the crucial items such as
狮心头盔
,
歼灭者
, and the early game
奥金斧
.
Weapon Skill
As seen in the Race Selection portion of this guide, the term "weapon skill" comes up. In Classic WoW a player has a weapon skill level for each type of weapon to demonstrate how proficient they are with any given type of weapon. The primary reason that weapon skill is so important is because of the "glancing blows" mechanic.
The lower the player's weapon skill is, the more damage you lose on a glancing blow. Glancing blows not only significantly reduce the amount of damage that your auto attack would do, but will also negate the chance of that auto attack being able to be a critical strike! Weapon skill is not a crucial stat for tanking in till the warrior is ready for duel wield tanking, where white hits become much more prevalent.
Raiding Playstyle
Spanning six raids and six world bosses, WoW Season of Mastery contains a lot of raid content for players to experience, broken up by a Seasonal release schedule. While all of the content won't be made available immediately on launch, you can prepare for them ahead of time with our WoW Raid Guides. Knowledge is power, and some classes or talent builds perform better in one raid over another, so knowing what you're going to face is key to defeating it!
Here we will cover what do you need to know when facing different challenges in dungeons and raids. It is important to remember that, unlike in retail, not every class has a good answer to every situation, with some even having complex restrictions, due to gameplay limitations like the debuff limit mechanic.
Single Target
When tanking a boss, it is important to generate as much threat as you are able to. To do this, one must follow an ability priority list to maximize their threat. That priority list is as follows:
;
for dual-wield tanking.
Dump any excess rage into
While this priority list allows for maximum threat generation, it is still important to know when you are going to be taking heavy damage and need to use a defensive cooldown. This will typically come with practice as you feel out how hard each boss hits you with your current level of gear. If for any reason you lose aggro, remember that you have both
嘲讽
and
to immidiatly grab the mob back.
AoE Tanking
As for using your abilities to generate the best AoE threat possible, the priority list is as follows:
Use
as much as possible. This ability will generate threat per enemy hit making it extremely good for picking up many mobs.
Dump excess rage into
While this priority is simple and works just fine, there is a multitude of ways the tank can enhance their AoE threat with other abilities and items:
尖刺水晶
地精工兵炸药
力反馈盾牌
献祭之油
纯焰精华
瑟银盾刺
龙鳞之心
If you are unable to pick up a pack of enemies right away, remember you have
挑战怒吼
in case of emergency.
Final Thoughts
Warriors are the premier tanks in Classic WoW. Not only do they have incredible defensive cooldowns, but are able to generate a massive amount of threat and even do moderatly good dps when duel wield tanking!

Thanks for the guide.
My 2 cents as I used to tank as a warrior during vanilla (all raids cleared up to and including parts of AQ40). As far as I remember, the defense skill was much more important than what you suggest in that it granted critical strike immunity when reaching 440 defense skill. The naked defense was 300 for a level 60 toon. So a tank needed 140 additional defense skill from gear and/or talent. Every prot warrior guide from that time used to tell this was a mandatory goal.
Getting an additional 140 defense skill from gear is quite difficult (look at
愤怒
which has only 61 additional defense, despite being the tier 2 tanking set) so the Anticipation talent is a very big deal and should not be skipped.
About your comments regarding threat and how we should give priority to threat generation on boss fights: I don't recall threat ever being an issue during vanilla. Even with his very little damage output, all of prot war attacks or spells used to generate truckloads of threat while in defensive stance, and the taunt was pretty efficient in case it wasn't enough.
So while threat was an important tanking component, survavibility was probably more important, and should be given more focus.
So in term of talents build, I'll go along with something like this:

I've watched some clips of dual wield tanks and thus decided this shall be my long aspiring goal.
In the videos I've found that many of the dw-tanks use thunderfury, not really a surprise given that the guilds prominent tanks often were given this weapon.
So while dreaming of grandeur I toyed with the thought of combining thunderfury with the only other prominent tank-sword I could remember, Quel'Serrar.
This mindgame sparked a question that's been bothering me for a while, though. IIRC weapon-speed and the flat damage of a weapon greatly impacted the abilities you used, hence rogues for example used a fast offhand to apply poisons and a slow hardhitter for backstab and whatnot.
Quel'Serrar is the slower weapon, with higher flat damage, which according to my assumtions, would count towards yielding higher numbers. The offhand weapon, on the other hand, had a higher miss-chance than the weapon wielded in the mainhand.
Thus I subject this to you:
Would a dw-tank use THE most legendary sword in the game as a offhand, to get higher numbers?
OR
Would a dw-tank use Thunderfury in mainhand, despite having lower flat damage, in order to benefit from the proccs of the weapon?
OR
Would a dw-tank scoff at Quel'Serrar, and choose a faster weapon as offhand to keep the Thunderfury as mainhand?
OR
Is the speed and flat damage such a minor aspect of the dw-tanks gameplay that it doesn't matter?
Food for thought... Thank you for reading.

Hello! Thanks for this guide! So, noob question here - I didn't start raiding until Wrath, and tanking in Cata, so Vanilla is a completely new experience to me. My question is on Tactical Mastery and stance dancing. which I've heard of but never really experienced - I remember having to flip to Berserker to pummel things as DPS, but that's about it.
Looking over the abilities, and what you're recommending as the basic rotation for threat, it seems like we can do what we need to do in Defensive Stance. So, I'm just wondering why Tacitcal Mastery is needed - I'm assuming there's something I just don't know and am not seeing (maybe for charging?). Any clarification would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Although I am interested in playing a Protection Warrior in Classic, in the past I didn't really start playing a Warrior until Wrath of the Lich King, when Thunder Clap and Rend seemed to be part of a Protection Warrior's rotation (as evidenced by the "Blood and Thunder" talent at the time). I am curious about the absence of those two abilities from the recommended rotations here.
My guess in the case of Rend would be that a boss can only take so many dots, and it's one less for the DPS if the tank uses Rend; or that the damage from Rend does not translate into enough threat to make it worthwhile. Are either or both of those guesses correct, or is there some other reason not to use Rend as a tank?
And why is Thunder Clap not good for aoe tanking?
I know I have a lot to learn, and unlearn...

When it comes to races: Firstly, there is at least one major tanking axe in the game. Secondly, your logical for Tauren is completely faulty. Of course you're just repeating the mantra of bad players "oh the healers aren't doing the jobs!" When it comes to hardcore progression, you are battling situations where you will die, then Tauren are the best, it is often the difference between winning and losing, and sometimes healers cannot keep up with the damage. The Troll racial has so many variables (it is only worth activating at 50% health, which isn't often at the start of the fight when you need the most aggro, it has a long cooldown, and short uptime) that it is far less reliable than the Tauren. Of course this doesn't mean they aren't bad tanks, but people tend to overstate how good their racial is based on (bad) theorycrafting. We know that actual classic bosses will have higher parry rate, this means their attacks can speed up more often than on private servers. Having extra health in these situations is far better.
Troll racial ALSO depends on healers being bad and not keeping you topped up to be the best it can be. Even if you did use it at the start, the uptime is still that short. Tauren racial has less variables and is a simple: if you get hit with a hit that knocks you to -5% you will not die. Also Tauren have a larger reach, which may make approaching mobs easier. Add to this the fact that Fury/Prot may be a variable spec, and more of a defensive stat like HP is even far more beneficial. Maybe hardcore guilds will find Troll better (there are some fights where this is true), we don't know yet. But right now Tauren are still the safer option.
Basically, if you can say "your tank and/or healers are likely doing something wrong." with the Tauren health racial. Then equally it can be said, "your DPS are likely doing something wrong." with the Troll racial. Nor is the Troll racial a "massive threat increase" as you suggest. It is a minor threat increase. Funny enough, when you need threat the most, you probably won't be able to use it at its most effective capacity.

Damn I'm so hyped for Classic, far more than recent 8.2 patch on retail. I'm planning to create warrior tank and this guide is really cool. I wasn't sure about the race but I found here everything I needed to know. See you in Classic then! :)

Impale prot is nonsense and here is why:
Impale only affects your damage dealing abilities, which as a prot warrior are Revenge (which only does very little damage), Heroic Strike/Cleave (which you barely have the rage to use unless in a raid boss fight), and Shield Slam. And it only increases the damage of their crits by 10% overall. So, let's say you have 25% (which without 5/5 Cruelty is a lot unless you have full world buffs and everything), that's still only a 2.5% damage increase of only those three abilities. You are better off just putting those points into Cruelty and increase your overall damage by 2%.
Deep Wounds gets worse the faster your weapon. The damage is not only weaker with a fast weapon, but also gets overwritten more easily. It's designed for slow 2H, not for fast daggers and swords which tanks should usually go for. It's also completely wasted on raid bosses.
Imp Rend is what it is, but basically you are spending 8 points for talents that will do very little for a protection warrior and are much better spent with Cruelty, Deflection or Imp HS.
