Common Questions About Brewmaster Monk
The most commonly-asked questions about Brewmaster Monk are the ones you would expect: "Which of these two pieces of gear is better?", "What stats should I wear?", and "How do I play the class?". Beyond these, some additional, specific questions are highlighted below. Remember that you can always ask further questions in our comments, forum, or the
Monk Class Discord
server!
Do I play defensively or offensively as a tank?
Although this is a simple question, it does not have a simple answer. The easiest way to describe how to approach your play as a Brewmaster Monk is to focus more on being defensive until you are comfortable enough to optimize for damage. After all, the most important job of a tank player is to not die! What makes this especially tricky is that how easy or difficult it is to stay alive can change based on your group, the weather, and even what you may have had for breakfast that day. Basically, the answer to this question is one that
will change often
.
With that being said, Brewmasters are tanks that often have an easier time shifting into a more offensive mindset than other tank specializations. They do not have to give up as much defensively in order to deal more damage by comparison. At most, you will only be switching a few talent points at a time as you progress from survival to damage. Ultimately, however, your biggest shifts will not be from switching between passive effects, but instead from switching trinkets and adopting a more "greedy" mindset in play. Feel free to experiment as you go throughout your tanking journey; just remember that
it is often more punishing to have a tank player fall than a DPS or healer
.
Should I use Press the Advantage or Weapons of Order?
The choice node of
顺水推舟
and
精序兵戈
is arguably the most defining one in the entire Brewmaster talent tree. However, these talents offer their power in two very different ways, which complicates things.
精序兵戈
acts as your "active" choice between the two, giving you a new ability to use as a potent cooldown. Fortunately, it also does not really alter your rotation; you will simply press it on cooldown in most circumstances. Although it does provide a small amount of passive defense through its 10% Mastery, your bigger concern when it is active is to quickly reach four stacks of its debuff before capitalizing with some of your harder-hitting abilities like
旭日东升踢
or
爆炸酒桶
. This can be an issue against enemies that won't be around for long enough to hit all four stacks of the debuff, however, as that represents a total of four casts of
醉酿投
/
旭日东升踢
. All things considered, though, it is the easier talent to play around once you are comfortable with the basics of the Brewmaster Monk rotation, while also rewarding you with even more damage overall.
顺水推舟
, in comparison is a "passive" talent option, entirely removing
猛虎掌
as an ability in exchange for buffing your auto attack damage and enabling bonus casts of
醉酿投
or
旭日东升踢
. As an extra twist, these bonus casts can even benefit from talents that normally interact with
猛虎掌
, such as
反击
,
迎面铁掌
,
幻灭连击
, and even
气冲九霄
or
酒仙之道
! With these effects in play, you can achieve some monstrous damage values on
旭日东升踢
or even see upwards of 9 seconds of cooldown reduction to Brew abilities. Of course, not having
猛虎掌
as a "filler" ability when there is nothing else to press means that you will likely have more gaps in the rotation of pressing nothing, though you may fill some of them with casts of
神鹤引项踢
instead.
Overall,
顺水推舟
should be thought of primarily as a "learning" talent for Brewmasters. While its effects aren't bad by any means, there is enough of a gap in damage potential between it and the alternative for it to not be recommended once you are comfortable with the rotation and can handle the extra cooldown of
精序兵戈
.
Which is better, Charred Passions or Dragonfire Brew?
This choice node represents a very real decision among the many options of the Brewmaster talent tree. Both of these talents see frequent use across all types of content, though there are moments where one will prove more useful than the other.
灼焰炙气
is a talent meant to reward you for being active in the rotation by encouraging more use of
幻灭踢
and
神鹤引项踢
. With the always-recommended
萨萨拉比姆的力量
talented, you will be able to maintain full uptime on
灼焰炙气
's bonus damage effect from
火焰之息
's cooldown repeatedly resetting with every cast of
醉酿投
. However, this talent requires you to reliably press
幻灭踢
on cooldown--and still use
猛虎掌
in single-target rather than
神鹤引项踢
. If you do not, or cast them unbuffed, its performance will suffer.
Meanwhile,
龙焰酒
aims to passively improve your damage to
火焰之息
and even increase it based on your current
醉拳
debuff (
轻度醉拳
,
中度醉拳
, or
重度醉拳
). Depending on circumstances, it may even encourage you to use
火焰之息
at the beginning of a pull and still take advantage of
萨萨拉比姆的力量
resetting the cooldown after your next
醉酿投
. In addition, due to
火焰之息
's damage scaling up to
20
targets, it can be more reliably effective in massive target counts rather than the smaller, 5-target scaling of
神鹤引项踢
.
Ultimately,
the true answer to this question is to use the talent you have an easier time playing around
. If you are after the absolute greatest amount of damage,
灼焰炙气
will often have a
slight
advantage over
龙焰酒
(when played correctly), but this gap won't matter if you are not confident in your rotational skills. Likewise,
龙焰酒
may gain a slight advantage in content with regularly
重度醉拳
and the Amirdrassil 2pc bonus (
焦灼之梦
), but not enough to end up the clearly superior option.
When should I use Rushing Jade Wind or Special Delivery?
Though it may be an earlier choice in your talent tree,
碧玉疾风
and
特别快递
is another that will have larger consequences on how you play as a Brewmaster Monk. Fortunately, however, their performance gap is small, though there are pros and cons to running either.
碧玉疾风
allows you to continuously deal small amounts of damage to all enemies around you, which is great for helping to manage your threat. It also features a low cooldown and has no Energy cost, allowing you to easily fit it into your main Brewmaster rotation and avoid pressing
猛虎掌
or
神鹤引项踢
too much. However, this short cooldown can also be frustrating for maintaining the buff, and you may drop it at times even with proper play. If it is not active enough, your performance will suffer.
On the other side of things,
特别快递
passively deals its damage after a short delay whenever you use one of your "Brew" abilities, such as
活血酒
. It also applies a massive 50% snare to enemies damaged by it and does not deal reduced damage against multiple targets, making it especially useful in larger pulls. With that being said, the 3-second delay due to travel time on the projectile means that enemies can sometimes avoid the damage, and even potentially graze an enemy placed in crowd control. These kinds of mistakes can be especially punishing.
In the end, as with
灼焰炙气
and
龙焰酒
, you should choose the talent you are better able to play around in the rotation. If looking for the option with the absolute best damage, you should opt for
碧玉疾风
in all content, though you must be able to maintain high uptime on its effect.
Ultimately, though, either of these talents will make up a relatively small amount of your overall damage profile and can be used interchangeably based on comfort
.
Is dual-wielding weapons better than using a 2h?
When selecting a weapon, your first and foremost concern should be about its item level. If the item level is the same between weapons, then dual-wielding will often result in a
slightly
better damage output due to having access to a second weapon enchant. With
顺水推舟
talented, you are even further encouraged to dual-wield due to its bonuses scaling with your attack speed. However, if the two one-handed weapons are a lower item level than a 2h option, it will still be the better choice. Realistically, you should take whatever combination provides the highest weapon DPS among the weapons you have, and decide among the options with the help of simulation tools such as
Raidbots
. Remember to place the weapon with the highest weapon DPS in your main hand!
Common Mistakes and How to Prevent Them
Poorly Managing your Brews and Shuffle
This is perhaps the most common mistake made by Brewmaster Monks, and is due to a fundamental misunderstanding of how they mitigate damage. Although some tank specializations seek to use their mitigation abilities
before
taking damage (such as a Protection Paladin pressing
正义盾击
or a Protection Warrior activating
盾牌格挡
), Brewmasters instead focus more on reducing the damage
after
it has been
醉拳
ed by using
活血酒
. However, they do also maintain the
酒醒入定
buff by using their main damage abilities (
醉酿投
and
幻灭踢
), which helps to smooth out damage taken -- if it ever drops, you will suddenly take a lot more immediate damage and also reduce the strength of your
活血酒
casts.
Where things get more confusing is in evaluating
活血酒
. This ability is unique among many defensive tools in that it receives cooldown reduction based on correctly using your other rotational abilities, while also having multiple charges. Put simply, it is an ability you will pretend has half of its stated recharge time and think of as mostly having one charge. This allows you to maintain a use for emergencies, though you also want to still avoid sitting with both charges off-cooldown.
From here, the next step is recognizing when your damage taken from
醉拳
is dangerous or not. Although there are three debuffs to help guide you (
轻度醉拳
,
中度醉拳
, and
重度醉拳
), they do not always mean you are in more or less danger. If you are the only member of the group taking damage while at
重度醉拳
, your healer(s) can likely give you their full attention and make it less threatening. On the other hand, if the entire group is taking heavy damage, even the small amount of extra damage from
轻度醉拳
can be deadly. It is up to you to learn when these moments occur and spend your
活血酒
charges appropriately. This may mean even Purifying in
轻度醉拳
at times. So long as you're still able to handle spikes in your
醉拳
,
this is fine
.
天神酒
, your other main "Brew" ability, is fortunately a lot less complicated to manage. For the most part, you can activate it on cooldown as an extra cushion against your damage taken, though if you are aware of a big chunk of damage coming soon it is a great idea to hold it for a short time. In addition, depending on your use of
活血酒
, you will also increase the size of its shield with the help of Improved
天神酒
(shown as the
净化真气
buff).
Bad Rotational Play
Brewmaster Monks are a bit unique among tanks in that many of their abilities handle both offensive and defensive benefits at the same time. This is great if you have a strong grasp on the core rotation, but can also mean it's especially punishing if you don't. In particular, failing to press
幻灭踢
and
醉酿投
on cooldown could result in losing your
酒醒入定
buff and suddenly taking a massive spike of damage from
醉拳
ing less of it.
Although our rotation page covers the entirety of what to press and when, here is a simple example of how you would focus on pressing
幻灭踢
more:
幻灭踢
醉酿投
"filler"
"filler"
幻灭踢
By breaking your rotation down into small chunks of four buttons at a time based on
幻灭踢
, you start to see how there are only ever two or three abilities you need to think about between
幻灭踢
casts. For example, you could start with a
幻灭踢
, followed by
醉酿投
, then
火焰之息
, and finally a cooldown like
精序兵戈
before doing another
幻灭踢
and slotting in three more abilities. You may notice that this makes it hard to press your offensive cooldowns back-to-back, but
that is okay
. Many of these abilities have very long durations and will still be active by the time you reach another "filler" moment to press another cooldown, and for the most part the benefit of layering multiple cooldowns is limited.
Energy Management
Despite being your main resource, there are only
3
abilities in your rotation that cost Energy to cast:
醉酿投
, which costs 40, and
猛虎掌
/
神鹤引项踢
, which each cost 25. The main difference in these spenders is that your
猛虎掌
and
神鹤引项踢
have no cooldown, while
醉酿投
has a short cooldown based on your Haste. This can create a common problem where you are unable to press
醉酿投
on cooldown due to over-using your energy on those other two abilities, which is dangerous due to
醉酿投
often dealing more damage and also contributing more to the cooldown reduction of your all-important defensive "Brew" abilities!
To get around this issue, try to think in terms of how many abilities there are to press between each cast of
醉酿投
. With how your Energy regenerates, this means you can only press
猛虎掌
or
神鹤引项踢
2-3 times between your
醉酿投
ing. Fortunately, there are plenty of abilities you can use that also have no Energy cost to fill in these remaining gcds, including
幻灭踢
,
火焰之息
, and talented options like
碧玉疾风
or
真气波
. Even then, you may find yourself needing to
press nothing at all
for a global or two before another
醉酿投
.
If you are still having Energy problems, then you are most likely not making use of your "free" abilities enough. In particular, focus on hitting
幻灭踢
on cooldown!
Ignoring Defensive Tools
Brewmaster Monks have access to a large number of defensive cooldowns, including
躯不坏
,
散魔功
,
壮胆酒
, and
禅悟冥想
. These tools offer a strong way to support your smaller (but no less important) defensive abilities of
活血酒
,
天神酒
, and the
醉拳
passive. However, you need to actually
use
these abilities in order for them to be effective, and ideally be used frequently to maximize their coverage over a long fight. Where you will difficulty is in balancing your efforts in getting more casts versus getting effective casts. Over time, this is something that will naturally occur as you gradually learn the damage patterns of an encounter. For example, if there is a large spike of magic damage every 90-120 seconds, then it's probably a good idea to talent into
散魔功
and use it there rather than something else!
In addition to the abilities available to you as a Brewmaster Monk, remember that there are also a number of "external" cooldowns found on many other specializations. Used appropriately, these extra abilities can act as a great way to fill in any gaps that may pop up in your defenses. With that being said, since you aren't in control of them being activated, it is important to be
vocal
about asking for them. Calling for help in general during a raid encounter may very well result in you receiving multiple at once, and if you aren't supposed to be doing that with your own cooldowns, you definitely shouldn't allow it to happen with other players'! Instead, try to call for the
specific
external you have in mind.
The most common external cooldowns you can call for and their specializations are:
Restoration Druid:
铁木树皮
(damage reduction on a low cooldown)
Mistweaver Monk:
作茧缚命
(a massive damage absorb that also increases healing-over-time while active)
All Paladins:
牺牲祝福
(redirects a portion of damage taken to the Paladin
Discipline Priest:
痛苦压制
(large damage reduction on a longer cooldown)
Holy Priest:
守护之魂
(increases all healing received, and will also save you from a lethal blow)
Preservation Evoker:
时间膨胀
(delays all damage received, similar to your own
醉拳
passive, on a low cooldown)
Analyzing Your Combat Logs
One incredibly powerful tool available for tracking your performance and comparing it to other players is the use of combat logs. These are created using the "/combatlog" command in your in-game chat to create a text file in the Logs folder of World of Warcraft. This file can then be uploaded to
Warcraftlogs
and, from there, be used in
WoWAnalyzer
.
WoWAnalyzer
is a website devoted to analyzing combat logs. It is supported by the community, and is a very useful tool for Brewmaster Monks trying to figure out how well they are performing in raid. To a lesser degree, it can give some limited advice on Mythic+ performance as well! If you just want to look at your logs the old-fashioned way, under the “Buffs” tab, you can check your
天神酒
uptime, to ensure you are not letting it sit on cooldown for long.
On the “Casts” tab, you can check your usage rates of
醉酿投
,
幻灭踢
, and
活血酒
. Your casts for
醉酿投
and
幻灭踢
should be fairly close to their cooldowns (e.g.,
幻灭踢
has a base cooldown of 4s, so if you are only averaging 60 casts in a 6-minute encounter - one cast every 6 seconds - something is wrong).
