Welcome to Wowhead's guide to Adapting to Battle for Azeroth's pre-patch guide as a Blood Death Knight. Patch 8.0 brings a lot of changes from BFA to the world of Azeroth and this guide is made to make sure you are prepared for all upcoming changes. This guide gives you an overview of all the changes happening with patch 8.0 for Blood Death Knight.
This pre-patch page is intended to help you know the changes to Blood Death Knight during the pre-patch. Note that during pre-patch, while artifacts
no longer work
, we do not have our
azerite powers
yet, meaning this isn't the final picture for specs in BFA. However, we still retain the powers from legendaries, which will continue working

Core Changes from Legion to BFA
Despite the number of changes below, the day-to-day unlife of a Blood Death Knight remains largely unchanged. Our best stats remain Haste and Versatility, our rotation is largely untouched, and even many of the same talents will be selected, despite significant changes to the talent tree's layout.
Mechanical Changes
All abilities have been normalized to incorporate weapon damage and an Attack Power coefficient. This makes the relative damage of different abilities much easier to gauge, and ensures that all abilities scale on the same factors, to the same degree. Note that currently, the Attack Power increase provided by tank specializations is actually applying as a modifier to overall damage, rather than modifying just the Attack Power value. As a result, the current formula for tank abilities is:
(Attack Power + Weapon DPS * 6) * AP Coefficient * Damage Multiplier * (1 + Mastery AP Bonus)
It is unclear whether this model is a bug, or if it is the new intended behavior (and the tooltips need to be updated.)
Auto-attacks are tuned much higher relative ability damage.
As with other tanks, Blood Death Knight active mitigation has been reworked to provide mitigation based on Armor. For Blood, this means

now increases Armor by a significant amount, scaling on Strength, instead of absorbing damage. This required an adjustment to
灵界打击
to compensate for the reduction in damage taken, and so
灵界打击
now heals for 25% of damage taken in the last 5 seconds, up from 20%.
According to a series of forum posts by Sigma, more challenging enemies will penetrate more of a player's armor as the expansion progresses, keeping overall damage taken in balance as tanks gain more Armor and primary stat over the course of the expansion. No further information has been provided to explain how this will work, but the tooltip for Armor on your character sheet will now show the effectiveness of your armor against your current target in addition to a base reduction level for normal enemies of an equal level.

. While this is a nice buff, and will make Mastery no longer feel punishing to get on an upgrade, it is not enough to pull Mastery ahead of Haste or Versatility. To compensate for the effect this would have on

numbers while off-tanking (and not taking damage,) the floor value of
灵界打击
has been reduced to 7%, down from 10%.
鲜血死亡骑士
has been tuned upwards from 15% to 29% and the Stamina bonus from

has increased from 50% to 60%. These changes don't really represent buffs, so much as necessary tuning changes to make other mechanical changes listed above viable.
Core Ability Changes
In this section, we will limit ourselves to changes that make significant changes to how an ability is used; as nearly every ability received some sort of numerical tuning, we will not cover those adjustments here.
The snare effect of
心脏打击
was nerfed to a 20% speed reduction.
The cooldown of
符文刃舞
was reduced to 2 minutes, from 3 minutes previously.
The radius of
血魔之握
was reduced significantly, from 20 yards to 15 yards. This is approximately a 40% reduction in the area of effect.
War Mode
Another change from Legion into BFA is the addition of
War Mode
. War Mode is a new World PvP system in the Battle for Azeroth pre-patch, along with the new Honor system and Honor Talents. You are now able to toggle War Mode while in a capital city to gain access to PvP Talents in the outdoor world as well as other bonuses, like increased rewards from World quests and 10% extra experience. The downside is that you will always be in PvP combat mode, with the rewards counterbalancing that risk.
Changes to the Global Cooldown (GCD) for Blood DK
The Global Cooldown, or GCD, is a short lockout period which controls the rate with which abilities can be used; spells that are on the GCD are unable to be used simultaneously, while only abilities off the GCD can be used at the same time or during that lockout period. The global cooldown starts at 1.0 second for energy resource classes, and 1.5 seconds divided by haste for all others.
In Battle for Azeroth, many abilities which used to be off the GCD are now controlled by it. For Blood DK the abilities affected by this change are:

The global cooldown incurred is 0.5 seconds for this ability, instead of the standard global cooldown of 1.5 seconds, reduced by Haste.

Other talents were retuned, or otherwise reworked:
饮血者
technically works exactly the same as before, but with the much larger gap between health pools and damage output, this works out to an de facto nerf to any leech effects.

generation component removed, and now also affects

. This is, ultimately, a massive nerf to the talent.

was nerfed by 50%, now providing at most 10% maximum Health with a full 10-stack of

now provides the effects it would intuitively provide, increasing strength and duration, while reducing cooldown. The buff to maximum Health was removed.

provides 10% less damage reduction and lasts 1 second longer. The nerf to effectiveness hurts, but the increase to the duration will actually help significantly on bosses with unpredictable ability usage, like Argus.

had the snare component removed and reworked into a separate talent,

now has a chance to proc on any auto attack, instead of auto attack crits - this effectively means we can actually rely on getting the full RPPM proc rate of 5 RPPM out of this ability. Additionally, the increase to auto attack damage affects the bloodworms, making this talent deal respectable damage.

was significantly nerfed, being placed on a 6 second cooldown, having its duration reduced 40%, and the healing done reduced 33%.

was nerfed to require 10

Returning Legendary and Artifact Effects
In Battle for Azeroth, many old artifact traits and legendary effects from Legion were turned into talents and baseline abilities. It is known that we will lose our Artifacts

Artifact Traits and Abilities
With 8.0.1, all abilities and traits attached to your artifact weapon are disabled. This has a number of significant impacts on how Blood Death Knights work, even if overall numbers tuning is balanced out:
Losing

is just a respectable defensive cooldown, instead of turning you into an unkillable self-regenerating Health pinata for 10 seconds.

will generate a flat 3 stacks of

, allowing for it to be refreshed at 7 stacks, but increasing the runes spent on

over time, and reducing

generation accordingly.

generated a significant amount of leech healing over the course of an encounter, even accounting for overhealing. Additionally, the loss of
无尽渴求
removes the somewhat unreliable (and undesirable) mini game of trying to time
灵界打击
casts so that two uses could occur between boss melee attacks to benefit from the 25% damage buff.

provided a comfortable shield at the end of
吸血鬼之血
, which works out to a de facto nerf of your most valuable defensive cooldown.
地狱之口
and
黑暗之舞
were massive buffs to the effectiveness of
符文刃舞
, and without them, pressing it will feel much less satisfying and impactful.
吸血光环
helped define Blood Death Knights as the premier Mythic+ tank; losing it will definitely change the dynamics in dungeon content.

changed the use of
灵界打击
in a significant manner. Players will need to adjust their reflexive actions to stop using a
灵界打击
immediately
prior
to a large hit.
Item Changes
Some of the items associated with Blood Death Knights, particularly legendaries, have been adjusted to account for the changes in patch 8.0.1:

is technically unchanged, but the change to the floor value of

means this item will no longer guarantee a runic power refund.

, but with the talent shuffling, this opens up a different pair of talents to choose.

absorb value changed to a 10% increase to the Armor it now provides.

no longer buffs Netherlight Crucible traits, as they have been disabled. Instead, it provides a 2% increase to damage and healing.

Surrounds you in an Anti-Magic Shell for 5 sec, absorbing up to 1] magic damage and preventing application of harmful magical effects. Damage absorbed generates Runic Power.
邪爆
Cause a target corpse to explode in a shower of gore. Does not affect mechanical or elemental corpses.
Name changed from Corpse Explosion to Corpse Exploder

Bone Shield: Surrounds you with a barrier of whirling bones, reducing all damage you take by 16% and increasingincreasing Armor by (40 * Strength / 100), and your Haste by 10%. Each melee swingattack against you consumes a charge. Lasts 30 sec or until all charges are consumed.

Additionally, your maximum Runic Power is increased by 10.

Places a dark ward on an enemy player that persists for 12 sec, triggering when the enemy next spends mana on a spell, and allowing the Death Knight to unleash an exact duplicate of that spell.Against nonplayers, only absorbs some harmful spells.

All enemies within 10 yards slowly decay, losing up to 3% of their max health every 2 sec. Stacks up to 5 times. Lasts for 6 sec.

Intimidates the target, increasing their damage taken by 5%3% for 6 sec. Each unique player that attacks the target increases the damage taken by an additional 5%3%, stacking up to 5 times.
Your melee attacks refresh the duration of Intimidated.
死亡锁链
Chains 3 enemies together, dealing (29.484% of Attack power) Shadow damage and causing 25%20% of all damage taken to also be received by the others in the chain. Lasts for 1510 sec.

The radius of Gorefiend's Grasp was reduced significantly, from 20 yards to 15 yards. This is approximately a 40% reduction in the area of effect.

provided 30% since it was re-added for blood a few weeks after the start of the legion; only wowhead used to display 20% for some reason (edit: it still does, but in-game it is 30%)
