Abstract
This guide will go over Battle for Azeroth Bind on Equip Epics (BoEs), and to a lesser extent BoE flipping in general. To be clear the term BoE here refers to the highest echelons of gear available on the auction house or trade chat (or if you’re really lucky from looting corpses). These items are very rare and provide meaningful power increases to players participating in end-game content (Mythic+, Raiding, PvP). Since those with gold to spare can acquire BoEs by easily they can allow a fresh max level character to bypass other, more time consuming gearing paths.
All these reasons drive demand for this class of item. At the time of writing (early BfA) BoEs range from 20,000 gold to one million or more in some very special cases. Ample amounts of gold exchange hands when these items are bought and sold, meaning, ample room for profit. By participating in flipping BoEs you, the goblin, are taking on the role of Market Maker, something very important, easily overlooked, and more often than not, demonized by the “community at large.”
Market Makers
It’s very easy for the average player to see someone making gold off of flipping BoEs and have it leave a bad taste in their mouth. After all, “all they’re doing is buying and selling things and exploiting other players.” In my eyes that attitude Is a lazy criticism, and fails to even attempt to see the value in such activities. In order to understand what that value is, lets take a look at how a flipper actually makes gold.
When you purchase a BoE for 50% of its market value, what you’re saying is, you’re willing to trade the time it takes to sell that item for 100% market value in addition to the price you paid for that item. Here is an equation to make this clear:
(50%* (Market Value))+Time Required to Sell at Market Value=100%*Market Value
If you assume that an equal trade is being made, then the flipper is not in-fact exploiting the original seller for half the value of the item. The flipper is allowing the original seller to use time as a bargaining piece in addition to gold value. Liquidity is an interesting and often overlooked phenomenon. In markets where there is a very high quantity of goods being bought and sold, liquidity can be taken for granted. However, when you start to deal with commodities with lower trade volumes, it must be considered by buyers and sellers.
Consider this real-world example: cash (if you bear with me and think of it as a commodity, not a currency) is extremely liquid, you would have no problem quickly finding someone willing to take your cash in exchange for something else. On the other side of things, if you acquire a rare piece of artwork as investment, you have to consider the fact that you can’t just go out on a whim and exchange it for something else, cash or otherwise.
As a market maker, you are giving BoEs a higher liquidity which allows for more people to trade them to increase their personal value. The person who originally looted the item is happy because they quickly turned literally nothing into a hefty sum, the flipper is happy because time less valuable in this case and they can afford to seek a larger profit at a later date, and the person who finally equips the item is happy because there is a healthy market for them to select exactly what they want.
Evaluating Value
Not all BoEs are created equal and it would be foolish to being making a market with them without understanding the market from the eyes of the buyer. All these data points factor into the price of any given item.
Item Level
Secondary Stat Distribution
Tertiary Stat Distribution
Sockets
Armor/Weapon Type (Cloth, Leather, etc.)
Armor Slot (Head, Shoulders, etc.)
Some characteristics of these data points will hold true regardless of the current meta game, some will vary drastically. There is no easily applied formula that will always work across time. Here are some anecdotes to help illustrate this point.
Case Study: BoE Ecosystem during Tier 21
Our first case study took place at the end of Legion, during the final raid, Antorus, the Burning Throne. For the final 3 raids in Legion, tier sets were available to players and in a majority of cases provided the optimal gear setup. These sets contained 6 total pieces of which 4 were required to receive maximum benefit. The following equipment slots contained tier armor:
Head
Shoulder
Back
Chest
Gloves
Legs
BoE items for these slots were fighting an uphill battle for value from the start since the average raider would be much less likely to purchase an expensive item with the expectation that it would eventually be replaced by an item required to optimize performance. As a result, BoE bracers actually provided some of the best flipping profit despite being in an overall less impactful item slot. Bracers don’t have as high a stat budget as chest or legs.
Keen eyed investors were able to focus their efforts on the proper pieces of gear in order to truly maximize profits.
Secondary Stats
Secondary stats for most if not all DPS specializations have significantly different priorities. These priorities ebb and flow based on a multitude of reasons, but staying aware of which secondaries are best for which classes can give the keen goblin a leg up when deciding if a BoE is ripe for a flip. As an example, at the very start of Battle for Azeroth, Haste provided the best performance increase for the most specializations. This resulted in any BoE with haste would fetch a higher price than a piece lacking it. And the king of them all of course was the Gnarled Mood Ring, having a double helping of haste.
There are many locations to stay up to date on what secondary stats are best for what classes.
Wowhead guides
, Icy-veins guides, individual
class discords
are all great resources. An intimate knowledge of precise stat tuning for each class is not necessary, but being aware of trends at large will be invaluable.
Armor Type
Armor type is another important consideration, both in number of clasess which can equip the item, and their current popularity. Mail armor only supports two classes, Cloth and Plate three, and of course Leather has four. Class popularity of course varies based on many factors, but an important fact relevant to the beginning of Battle for Azeroth was the overwhelming community perception of the Shaman class being sub-optimal. Whether or not this was actually the case is irrelevant since the perception causes fewer players to want to play the class.
Market and Region Market Value
The Trade Skill Master add-on is objectively the best way to quickly appraise value of BoEs through pricing provided on the item's tooltip. Alternative resources include the Trade Skill Master
website
where value can be looked up, The Undermine Journal
website
which can also lookup prices, and current prices of items on the auction house.
There is an important difference between the Market value of an item and the Regional Market Value. Market value takes into consideration items posted to the auction house on an individual server while Regional Market Value is an aggregate across all servers in a region. BoE trade volume is relatively smaller than say current content raw materials so looking at a regional price can be helpful when determining value.
In general, high population servers (servers classified as Full in the server selection during peak hours, AND containing 20+ guilds capable of clearing Mythic raid difficulties) tend to have lower priced BoE items, while low population servers tend to have higher prices. This is simply a result of basic economics, supply on lower population servers is much lower since fewer opportunities exist for the items to drop.
Closing Thoughts
BoE flipping can be an incredibly lucrative form of goldmaking. Once fully up and running, a BoE flipper can spend incredibly short intervals of time maintaining stock and posting auctions while seeing vast profits. On the ever popular "Gold Per Hour" scale, its almost impossible to beat an efficient BoE flipper.
A word of caution to any aspiring goblins, truly mastering this practice requires experience and practice. One of my favorite sayings taken from the illustrious Gold Queen (
TGQ
) is as follows: "You are not losing money, you're paying for experience."
