The Art of Effective Keybinding
Welcome! This guide will go through keybinding theory in a easy and comprehensible way, in order to maximize your playstyle (regardless if you play PVE/PVP).
Why should I read this?
After 5 years of experimenting, discussing and theorizing on how to get the best set of keybindings, I've gotten a big picture of how keybinding should be done, and it's benefits and disadvantages that are a result of how well one does it. The potential of an effective set of bindings is enormous and underappreciated, while a ineffective one will be a hindrance.
If I find this helpful in any way, what should do to show appreciation?
Then I strongly recommend you to rate 5 stars in the "Quick Facts" bar to the right!
**************************************************************************************
So let's get started! Step #1: The basics
It would be good to know what a focus modifier is and basic macroing, if you have no clue, check the FAQ down below.
So, is
my
perfect set of keybindings
your
perfect set of binds? It will rarely be, since binding properly depends on everything from your keyboard, to the size of your hand. Habits are not important and come in second hand. The first step of getting rid of potential bad habits is change!
Lets start by removing unecesarry bindings!.
You can skip this section, but it is near crucial for maximizing your binding potential.
These suggestions might seem wierd or just plain stupid, but a big amount of good players (gladiators, top raiders) bind this way. Specifically regarding backpeddle and keyboard turning. It might seem overkill, but trust me. Not only does your flow and movement improve, you get used to it fast too.
s
- By default bound to Backpeddle, but don't sweat it. You should
NEVER EVER EVER
backpeddle, unless you're a tank or have another very very good reason. Backpeddling is 50% slower than normal running, so it's stupid to not just turn with your
MOUSE
(not keys, covered below). Backpeddling is comparable to running into void zones and banging your head against your keyboard IRL. It will be more of use for us as a bind for a spell for instance.
q & e
- By default bound to Turn, also called keyboard turn. It is equally encouraged as backpeddling since it's much faster to just turn with your mouse. These two keys serve as top notch spell bindings furthermore.
z
- By default sheath weapon. If you want to RP go ahead, but if you want a fine keybinding then put a spell here!
x
- By default fly/swim down. Not really worth having, since you won't be flying or swimming when it really matters. A very unappreciated key.
c
- By default Show Character Pane. Also a very well placed key that I personally use for spells I need to be fast at clicking on, so just rebind it to something much less important if you can't be asked clicking the character icon.
v
- By default Show Enemy Nameplate. Just rebind it to ctrl+v man. V is a great bind.
b
- By default Toggle Backpacks. Not really super necessary but nevertheless I have great use of it as a spell binding. Rebind it if you like it/need more space.
r
- By default Reply Whisper. Just rebind that too, R is a really good bind.
t
- Can't even remember, since blizzard made it it's probably not worth in anyways. A very good binding aswell.
y
- I only recommend this if you really need space. It can for some be a bit uncomfortable for the index finger to reach.
f
- By default Assist Target. You'll never need this either. This key is perfect (on my keyboard atleast) for spells that will be using a modifier of any sort (focus cast spells etc).
g
- Can't remember. Also a worthwhile spell bind.
h
- By default Toggle PVP Pane. A bit annoying at first to use as a spell bind, but totally worth it.
Mousebutton 4 & 5
- Don't know what the default bind is, but I know that It's a incredible bind. Most mice will have them and some will not. How good of a binding these two are depend on the mouse and you.
Scroll Up & Down
- By default scroll in & out. Not worth it in any way seeing it's a AA+ prime bind, and you can just rebind zoom to your up and down keys. As a reference I use scroll up for
Mutilate
,
Obliterate
,
Dispel Magic
and scroll down for
Envenom
and
Frost Strike
. Another underappriciated bind.
Shift+1 through 6
- By default bound to Action page 1 through 6. Rebind straight away, those bars will be shown anyways if you're using the 4 action bars enabled via Interface.
Now let's identify our keys!
I'll use Razer Lycosa as a template since it has some pretty standard key positioning. If your keyboard varies alot from it, don't sweat it. After reading this you can just identify the ideal setup for your own case by making the same finger map as I did!
Click the image to open the full image in a new tab!
Take a look at the image. The black circles represent my fingertips in my hands idle position. Connected to it are lines that show wich keys each respective finger can touch. There are also keys that have the word "Fast" on them, representing that the respective finger is fast on clicking it.
Now we'll go over to catigorizing spells...
Step #2: Where to place what.
On what key a bind should be placed depends on:
How fast I need to have it at hand.
If the bind requires a Focus Modifier for various reasons.
Wether if the bind limits your reaction time.
For example, lets say you have 2 damage cooldowns (like
Adrenaline Rush
+
Potion of the Tol'vir
), that you frequently use combined.
Example of overlapping binds.
Bindings X (
Potion of the Tol'vir
) and V (
Adrenaline Rush
)
This is an example where you'll have trouble pressing the keys fast enough when both need to blown at the same time. This is because these binds are pressed by your thumb. One could put them into 1 macro but then you cannot choose when to only use 1 of the binds. That would require the player to bind these on additional binds. Either way, this binding is
not
efficient.
Lets see an example that further clarifies my point:
Example of overlapping and castprio underestimation.
Here I have a frequently used damage spell (
Frostbolt
)bound to "E" and a very important interrupt spell (
Counterspell
) bound to "4" that needs to be quick at hand.
The bindings are in almost all cases pressed by the index finger. This means that your index finger will be needed for
Frostbolt
wich happens to be a spell you spam, in addition to quickly reacting to enemy casts with
Counterspell
:
The third example explains binds that require modifiers.
Example of a bind that won't work with modifiers.
Polymorph
is bound to "shift+2" here. When pressed it will polymorph your target. Now lets say you want to polymorph you focus. There are loads of way of doing this, like for instance macros, focus modifiers etc. In this case your bind is already making use of a modifier (shift). This means that you will have to use a modifier in addition to shift, or alternatively make a macro that will only
Polymorph
your focus. This would ofcourse require another key. Therefore, selecting a key without (initial) modifiers is important for such binds.
This picture is what I consider a proper modifier bind. I personally use F for all forms of target specific Crowd Control like
Fear
and
Cyclone
because of how good it works with shift for me.
Example of a proper modifier bind.
Since "F" and "shift" don't overlapse, and feel really comfortable
with my own setup
they make a perfect modifier bind. Experiment to find wich keys go well with wich modifiers. Generally, a mix of modifiers and the buttons your index finger covers are a good mix! Don't use wierd combinations like "shift+z" is for me, those binds are too far away from your hands idle position and will just feel incredibly akward.
Step 3: Apply!
If you've taken in the previous steps properly, you should have a fair idea of how to bind your spells. It may take some time to get it all done, and a tad longer to master, but after you've done this I guarantee you that you've taken your skills to a new level.
**************************************************************************************
Q & A
The guide didn't serve me at all, what do I do?
If you have any negative experience leave me comment about it if you're sure that I'm objectively wrong of something. If you've stumbled upon a subjective and vague critic of my guide then think through it carefully before saying: "lol only asspies bind y"
How can I use Caps lock with a modifier?
You'll have to download a keymapping program and map "Caps Lock" to another key. For instance, I've remapped caps lock to "k" (with the "k" key obviously still bout to "k" itself. I never really use caps lock anyways.
What's a modifier and a focus modifier?
I try to make this guide as comprehensible as possible, but that's a
macro guide
you're looking for, not a keybinding guide. It is still fundamental kinda for this guide so check it out if you have no clue at all what it is. Modifiers are just ctrl, shift & the alt buttons. Example: The modifier of the binding "shift+2" is shift.
I've heard of people rebinding jump, do you recommend this?
Yes and no. Space is an incredible binding, probably one of the best depending on various factors like hand size hand keyboard. Even so, jump MUST be bound, it is crucial and part of game mechanics. That means that we must chose another bind for jump. I tried tab as jump and space as spell lock once, but I switched 4 weeks later after I couldn't get accustomed to it. I know hoodrch did it but I guess that just goes to show that he's primetime.
I've heard of people playing with both hands on their keyboard, their right hand being on the numpad. Do you recommend this?
I haven't really looked up exactly how it works, but if we assume that the mouse isn't being used then we are going to have limited movement seeing that we'll be forced to backpeddle and keyboardturn. It might work for PVE situations where little any movement is needed.
Do you bind your non urgent spells like buffs and so? Where do you keybind them if so?
I have very few if no spells that I actually click, this is actually a personal preference since I despise clicking. I usually bind them on numpand. For instance numpad 1 through 6 are buff spells and similar.

I have long fingers so this suggestion may not work as well for you as it does for me, but if you move all of your bindings over one space to the right, you will have an extra four keys on the left to bind with. So my pinky sits on "A" but is still able to access shift very easily.

The only problem with this guide - it ignores about ten keys that is much more easily accessible. They even have nice gaps to further help in positioning your hand and fight off misclicks.

I've always used ~, x, c, especially on my tanks (x is interrupt, c is taunt; ~ is charge on my druid/warrior, Consecrate when my pally was a tank, and Death & Decay on my death knight).
On my warlock I use ~ for Curse of Elements, X for Life Tap, and C for Shadowflame.
Furthermore on my tanks, I have two additional mouse buttons; I find myself using them more on my warrior, given all the stuns, interrupts, and charges they're equipped with.

Nice guide. It could benefit from tabs I think, for the various steps.
Also, I think "Why should I read this? Aren't you just some elitist prick going full autism?" is a little much. I'm guessing you have Aspergers like myself, but some might not take that comment very well :).

Here are some more ideas:
Q / E are my spammables, and Shift-modified for AoE spammers
1,2,3,4 are my priority rotations aside from Q and E
R / Shift R are my gap closers or makers in case of Hunter
F / Shift F are my interrupters
G / Shift G are for my taunt / detaunts
zxcvZXCV are my cooldowns
Shift + Spacebar calls my location-aware mount macro

Nice, handy and succinct introduction to keybinding. More helpful for some classes than others (for example, a few classes --hint..affliction warlock...hint-- will require a much more intricate approach to keybinding given the overwhelming number of spells they have.
That being said, I truly appreciate the theory and use of keybinding but remain an unapologetic point-and-clicker. I've heard all the arguments against point-and-clicking and many are valid, but none of the criticisms can't be overcome with the right add-ons and UI set up. I keep a small KG panel in the bottom center of my screen. I use bartender and set up several bars inside the small, compact KG panel. The largest bar, which is one row usually in the middle, is my main rotation. To the right of that I have a double-columned, smaller scale action bar with all my heals, shields, damage mitigators, etc. To the right, a smaller scale 1 columned action bar with my main 'boss tools' and cds (so, for my main - an ele shaman - I have the haste buff spell from herbalism, bloodlust, volcanic potion and my fire elemental). Underneath and above my main rotation bar I have little bars with other spells, items, etc that vary from class to class but which are well organized and easily accessible. Because of the compact, well-designed and well-organized (not bragging - getting a workable set-up takes a lot of time, trial-and-error) and my speed with a mouse I can always get to the next click well before the global cooldown from the last is over. I just prefer the visual guide the bars provide to my spells, rather than memorizing keys.
Now, I will say I am not a full keyboard turner, I use a combination of the keyboard and my mouse to move. That took some time to learn, but it works quite well.

I have all the movement keys moved one to the right (so ESDF) and use QWRT as my main spells (
灵界打击
and so on). This frees up A as a key bind and lets me reach 3&4 on my spell bar.

After setting up all your keybinds how do you remember which key or key-combinations are for each spells (before you get so used to it that it becomes second nature)?
Hope this helps...
First off you need to make a new character, the reason behind this is because you have a limited amount of spells / abilities you can actually keybind. If you limit what you can keybind at first, you will not get confused / forget what keys belong to what keybind. Less likely to get killed while you practise.
Another reason for using a new character, is that you will have to spam them abilities over & over, this in turn will produce the
muscle memory
, that your brain will need to stop you having to think about where the keybind is located.
Small baby steps.
It isn't essential to start with a new character, you can skip this idea & use the same concept of only making a couple of keybinds to start off with. The goal is
"Building your muscle memory"
for Keybinding to work.
Small baby steps
.
Once you have mastered the ability to use your first couple of keybinds without thinking of "clicking" & you're happy with the position. Add some more Keybinds. Repeat this untill you have all core spells / abilities keybind.
-----
What should i Keybind first?.... "So confused!".....break the spells down into set category.
Instant spells - Short cooldown
Cast spells - Short cooldown
Instant spells - Long cooldown
Start with your main abilities / spells. All of these should be placed where your hand is mostly located / placed the majority of the time, near "A" - "D" keys (if you use these keys for "Strafe" ..that is)
Well you should be using "Strafe" instead of "S" key / moving backwards. With "Strafe" you can still use all abilities / spells, this comes in handy when you have to move away from a player / boss quickly, loads better then using "W" key / forwards when running away from a player / boss.
What to Prioritise first
Instant spells / Cast spells with short cooldowns. Any instant spells / cast spells, you use on regular basis, Core part of your rotation. Keybind these, near your "A" - "D" keys first.
Next up.. it is wise to keybind the longer cooldown spells abilities last, since you will not be using them on a regular basis. This way you will have more room / flexibility for all your instant spells / cast spells with short cooldowns in the correct position.. you want to maximise the best way to reduce the time it takes to press a key for core abilities / spells.
Using modifers / keys:
Example: Shift with "F"
Why use them... You want to always try to keep your hand near "A" - "D" keys, in order to use "Strafe" when needed. With modifer keys you can use the same key for more then one spell. Kinda crazy to have Keybinds over your entire keyboard.
What is "muscle memory" ...check this website:

I have my left middle finger on J (run forward). The right Windows key is remapped to Ctrl, this way I can easiely access two modifiers (AltGr & Ctrl) with my thump and can use all the other four fingers to reach a lot of keys. I think it is easier to use modifiers with my thump than with my pinky. I also have a 5 button mouse with two more modifiers which I can press with my right thumb...in other words I have more combination than I can use.
For strafing and backpadel I use a foot switch,

Thanks for sharing !
But really as long as you map keys your stepping in the right direction for sure.
It is preference where to map what in the end.
Im utterly obsessed with this subject and almost change my key bindings every time I play really, either to perfect my new 'mapped key set' or to remake my mapped key set just to keep my brain fresh.
I find with myself, I can get a lil' carried away over pressing keys like E or Q too fast for cooldowns and be less effective depending on class lets say. So my goal is to make a set that is equally perfected for all the classes I prefer. As one of the earlier comments I read I use F for interrupts like Kick because of its instant availability....But Q and E are not too bad as 'strafe' for when you use an actual 'mmo mouse' and are needing to turn flank an enemy and press your right thumb buttons right.
I find Modifier keys work great on 'minimalist' mice to double triple their functions.
Also did you mention using ESDF for movement therefore doubling the amount of quick 'left hand' keys? This is effective if yo don't have the MMO mouse. I'm sure your comments mention some type of this.
The Logitec G600 I believe is the best due to its own mapable modifier button!
Once again its all preference, and depends on your actual physical interface!
Just use your imagination! I Scroll target! and Alt +Scroll zoom and Alt +Wheel - tilt change view.
( PS remember Logitec is the King, trust me ! Question me and perish! JK, but no really Ask me why if you want to know! :D)

you are insulting the players directly

As someone who isn't playing serious pvp and doesn't play a healer, my keybinds are: 1 through 6 for rotation spells, Q for procs such as brain freeze, S for a survival CD such as Ice Block or Divine Shield, F for interrupts, R and G for AoE or utility spells (depending on what class I'm playing) and f1, f2, f3 and f4 for CD's such as Avenging Wrath and Rapid Fire.

Wait, what? Are you telling me that I should stop DPS, turn around, move a few yards, turn back, resume DPS, rather than keep DPSing and just press backwards?

Pretty lousy keybindings, actually. Since you would have to reposition your hand and move your ring finger from what I assume is the primary attack button for most people. I could see your thumb being used for C, V and B, but anything left of that would be an awkward stretch.

Very nice guide I have been raiding for 2 years and it is pretty much consistance with telling you at what is likely to be a a great optimization.
I was surprised to see that I came to the same conclusion with my jump keybind as the OP. changed jump to tab and havn't switched back.
Keybinds are amazingly important for healers when it comes to casting and movement at the same time.

Keybinds are something that I have also considered to be of great importance throughout my wow time. As early as vanilla my keybinds had become so heavily modified as to be unusable by anyone used to the defaults. For the last year I have been using an incredibly bizarre system, and while I am reaping the great benefits of it, the nature tends to make forming muscle memories difficult.
The system is inspired by the gameplay of Magicka. You have a sequence of magical elements you must press in order to create a spell, like for a fireball you would choose earth and fire, so every time you cast fireball you are pressing a sequence of between two and five keys.
This exists in wow by taking advantage of the ability to bind keys to action bar pages. I use four pages, bound to q, t, z, and b, and the action bar buttons themselves are bound to the keys surrounding my movement keys.
The advantages are that I only have to bind the main action bar, and can hide the extra bars and keep my screen uncluttered. Also, I never have to use modifiers. The two-key sequence I press for many moves, if it is slower, seems to be irrelevantly so.
However the disadvantages are many. In the OP above, the author mentions the danger of putting two moves that should be cast at the same time on the same finger. Similar to that situation, often times we must press keys while moving. That is, press a keybind while we are already using another finger to hold down a movement key. Sometimes I will need a movement key finger to switch to another action bar page, and so I'd have to actually pause my movement in order to cast the spell.
I would like to note that I began to use and became accustomed to this system while tanking in pve as a DK, and it is only in the past few months when I return to rogue pvp that the disadvantages of this system are becoming so blatant.
It seems that the time has come to create a new system once again. I'll be sad to see this one go, the concept is so interesting. But my fingers will thank me. For anybody thinking of trying this as I have, don't.

Great guide.
Wanted to add a tip that works great for me.
Using Bartender (or similar), stack your action bars.
Bind primary actions to a,s,d,f,g.
ALT is my primary modifier, gives me alt-a, etc.
I bind the action bar slots directly under asdf to these.
This helps locate the key visually, which helps me learn, and switch toons.
Shift as a modifer adds more (but minus the "a" as your pinky will probably be busy).
If you need more, add a row for q,w,e,r, or z,x,c,v, as preferred.
So, natural spot on the keyboard, modifiers, lyout visually on the action bars so you can find them quickly.
hope that helps.

Old but good article !
Since i always have been a healer i had to figure out how can i increase my reaction time. The answer is, all my spells and skills bound to hotkey or mouse buttons. Someone asked in this thread how you can not forget your binds. Here is my solutions (sorry for my poor English, i'm try my best):
I use two must have addon for binding and one for remember the binds. For bindings
Bindpad
and
Clique
and for remember the
TellMeWhen
addon. Maybe you ask why i use both Bindpad and Clique, the answer is with Bindpad you can't cast on any unit frame if you bind your spell to mousewheel and Clique only usable on unitframes (it would be great if the two addon merge).
Since i'm essentially a healer i have two main group of bind set and two subgroup. The two main group is the helping spell binds and the offensive spell binds and the two subgroup are the instant cast spell group and the channeling/casting time group. I use shift+keyboard or shift+mouse binds for offensive instant cast spells, shift+alt+mouse or keyboard for not instant cast offensive spells. Ctrl+mouse or keyboard for helpful instant cast spells and ctrl+alt+mouse or keyboard for not instant cast.
For example (i'm a priest):
shift + left mouse button
= Shadow Word: Pain
shift + alt + left mouse button
= Vampiric Touch
ctrl + left mouse button
= Renew
ctrl + alt + left mouse button
= Mass Dispel
For the offensive spells i use shift+ or shift+alt + button and for heal ctrl+ or ctrl+alt + button combinations. Don't forget some spells do not work if you bind them to mouse wheel, like Mass Dispel which is have to set the area where you want to cast after you activated it. With this combinations i can bind
28
! spells to mouse because i have two more button on my mouse and believe me it's very convenient and give you a freedom for mobility, you can WASD in the most time while you cast with the mouse (perhaps it depends on the spell ability) :
Worth to mention i use macros for every spells both in Clique and Bindpad config, here is some examples:
Bindpad macros:
- hostile spell (shift+ mouse wheel up):
/focus ;;
/cast Smite
- friendly spell (ctrl+mouse wheel up)
/target ;
/cast Flash Heal
-friendly spell with ability to cast on yourself with
alt
condition (mouse button 4 or alt+mouse button 4 ):
/target ;;
/cast Shining Force
Clique macros for the same spells:
- hostile :
#Smite
/focus ;
/cast Smite
- friendly :
#Flash Heal
/cast Flash Hea
So how can i remember these binds ? Of course with a lot of practice , but i use a little cheat here since i have more than one character (and one character have three different specialization with different spells). I made a little cheat sheet with the
TellMeWhen
addon which is display a little panel on the side of screen with six blocks, the six blocks represents the mouse buttons and what spell assigned to mouse buttons in the actual key combination, if i press the shift or shift+alt or any desired combination it switch to the appropriate spell cheat sheet panel. I share my TellMeWhen config which includes a little lua function, i'm not sure it's an efficient lua function (i not use event handler, simple just query the modifier key states) but it's works and not use much cpu time, don't forget
this config not work with higher version of TellMeWhen 8.25
, i don't know why, seems like the new version have some bugs (condition panel). Also don't forget its a premade config for a level 90 priest, so if you have another class for the first time maybe you can see nothing. You have to fill up the panels with your own spells in TellMeWhen configuration.
Ouch... i'm a newly registered user and can't yet share links and the config is more than the allowed character amount in this forum engine. I will come back few days later and will try to share, or if you interested in whisper me in wow: smokey2k#1946

If you have short hands I suggest you bind shift and ctrl to your mouse keys and move your home keys over one to sdfg instead of asdf. Which will give you access to 3 more keys and you won't ever have to press 2 keys with the same hand. To do this you just need to download X-Mouse Button Control.

In several of the discussions on keybindings and elsewhere, I've seen requests for what the default bindings are. I suspect there is a nice list somewhere, but I've done quite a few searches and I've only come up with comments that list some small set of common bindings. Figuring out the defaults turns out to not be that easy unless you are willing to hit the reset button after removing all your addons (or at least those that add or change with bindings). With that preface here's the list (I think). My methodology follows the table.
Notes:
These are not all the things that
can
be bound, just the ones that have a default binding.
This does not detail things like 'Alt' for self-cast (I need to play with this; for instance what happens if you rebind Z to a healing spell w/o removing the Alt-Z binding for Toggle Interface?...I
think
that any 'hard' binds rule)
It's possible I've missed something. Look at how I did this at the bottom, if you can think of something I missed, let me know

Methodology
I did not do a clean install of WoW and I did not create a brand new account. This
could
have skewed my results. Instead, I used my extra account that I use to play around with writing addons and:
Removed all the addons with the exception of one that I wrote that dumps the keybindings
Removed the WTF folder
Opened the system menu and reset bindings to default
Restarted WoW
Used my addon to dump the bindings
The addon code is a quick hack, but seemed to do the job. I cut-n-pasted the output into a text file, then used PowerShell to build a table of bindings that were set and then further used PowerShell to generate all the table rows (you didn't think I typed all that in did you?).

Beware that you increase risk of a "repetitive stress injury" by relying too much on shift and ctrl. I learned this the hard way after an 8 hour session of raiding and M+ tanking on my warrior. The pinky side of my left hand and wrist got really sore and forced me to not play for ~3 days. I experienced a similar issue on tanking on my Monk in Mists of Pandaria.
I sure do love my modifier keys, but holding shift or control while reaching with my pointer finger for (RGT45) is a weird kind of stretch. I feel a muscle doing weird things on the left underside of my arm. If you feel this, beware of over-using those keys. Maybe save them for really long CDs or buffs...

Just started playing a shaman again recently and if you know the class you know they have spells on spells on spells. My usually 1-8 and SHIFT 1-8 is just not enough space for all my abilities, totems, etc. Thanks for this guide some good tips to think about and good direction for trying new binds!

I don't think I've seen any thread necro'd as many times as this one's been. Googling for a list of warcraft's default key binds got me here but I ended up staying for Kaeyuri's excellent write up and all the useful commentary.
Like everyone else I've got my 2 bits to put in. One emphases Kaeyuri with a little commentary, and one offers a couple things I don't see elsewhere.
Kaeyuri explained very well why you should unbind most movement keys. Keyboard turning is SLOW. If you (wisely) can't give up strafing
consider using the m4/m5 mouse thumb buttons as your strafe binds
. Strafing is an art in itself and binding strafe to the mouse complements mouse turning very nicely. A nice side benefit of freeing those two keys is it gives you, with modifiers, up to 14 easy to reach key binds.
It's also obvious that you should put the spells you use a lot are on keys that are very easy to reach. However, Kaeyuri was never more right than when he said
put the spells you usually cast in sequence on keys that are easy for you to press in sequence
. It will take changing your binds and repetitions of changing those binds over and over again until you have something that works for you.
Easy sequencing is more important than grouping spells for easy memorization
.
I do have two suggestions I didn't see elsewhere (apologies to whomever I may have missed).
One is using something like SharpKeys to
swap the caps lock and and control keys
. Doing that makes it much easier to reach keys to the right and up while pressing control. It's especially helpful for classes with pets. The control key was supposed to be easy to reach (I'm looking at you IBM). Swapping those keys puts control back where it belongs.
Finally, something I didn't see mentioned elsewhere is the
action bar paging function in bartender and dominos
. Set up one bar as a 3x4 grid and bind it to match the left side of the keyboard (leaving out w as move forward). Then assign two other bars to be paged in by pressing either shift or control (functionally becoming the first bar). This gives me 33 spells/macros that are very easy to reach, and most of those are also easy to reach if I use alt as a modifier in a macro. It also helps some with memorizing your binds because the key binds you see on the screen have the same layout on the keyboard.

FAQ? where is it? Very informative discussion on keybinding and more. But I'm just coming back after a 5 year absence, and need more basic info as you described in looking at the FAQ. Have a Holy Paly with altered keybindings and many macros, so just trying to figure it out after 5 years is a challenge. Thanks for stuff that is getting me started.
