Heya, I am Krauzer-Sylvanas and I decided to make a little collection tips on how to be a progress raider. These are things I've picked up while raiding that helped me and I wanted to share in case they help other people. I am gonna be adding more things on this guide when i get time to write them and when I find out new ones :)
PREPARATION
Make sure you know your rotation perfectly, if not sure which is the perfect rotation join your class discord and check the resources there. Theorycrafters work hard to figure out the optimal rotation.
Practice makes perfect
, get comfortable with it on dummies and heroic, during progress the last thing you want to be paying attention to is your rotation.
Sim your character using top gear, stat weights isn't accurate.
Simming is the easiest way to gain DPS
without having to do anything. Using the optimal enchants, gems, items is a DPS gain no matter what.
Learn about your class' utility
. Off-healing as boomkin, decursing as mage, tremor as shaman etc. Make sure you have these abilites binded and are ready to use them if needed.
Watch videos, study logs, prepare your big wigs. Know which abilities are important to you, emphasize them, use colour coding to be able to distinguish them effortlessly during raid.
Know what to do when you get a mechanic
. If you know a way that your class can handle it better than another one volunteer to take responsibilty.
Create/Find supporting Weak Auras and macros, follow the raid leader's call for them but feel free to use personal ones on things you think you need help with.
Have a raid-friendly UI, center of screen + top middle should be clear. Most other things come down to personal preference but in general, friendly nameplates are clutter, enemy nameplates are necessary, boss frames help a lot (especially with dot classes). Creating a U.I. takes time and is usually a process that comes naturally, you adapt it slowly so don't worry about it too much
DURING THE RAID
Be focused
, if you want to kill a boss you need to give it your 100% , the more focused you are the more progress you can squeeze out of every wipe. That of course can change depending on the guild atmosphere/goal but in high rank raiding it's necessary.
Communicate
clearly, decisively, concisely
. Have a good microphone and try to not have background noise. When talking don't have doubt, it's better to commit to a bad call than being indecisive. Try not to say 'someone do this', use names .
Prioritize mechanics, the first time you do a fight pay more attention to the timings and what to do with certain mechanics and get comfortable.
DPS comes naturally afterwards
.
Be consistent
, don't change the way you do things without communication. It can change timings and confuse everyone. This can vary from positioning to cooldown usage.
Use defensives and utilities, you are a boomie and have an unused innervate? Communicate with healers and tell them it's available!
Straighten your back and have a healthy snack and water. This is really important for both your health and your endurance during raiding.
Have fun, in the end of the day you want to have fun, either in a competitive way or in a more casual. You don't want to feel burnt out.
AFTER THE RAID
Check the logs, check your deaths and see how can you improve. Think about the way you handled mechanics and if there is a better way. See if your DPS is comparable to other players and find the reason why if not.
Discuss any ideas you had that you think can help with progress with the rest of the raid. Everyone can contribute, the more minds the better.

Plan beforehand for a mechanic. Know what you should do and get an idea of how the enviroment/positioning looks like,
be proactive and not reactive
.
Usually progress goes like this... You pull, get to a mechanic, the person who gets it has no idea what to do, you wipe, the leader explains and you pull again but this time someone else gets it and you wipe again etc. Knowing what do beforehand significantly reduces the amount of wipes and if you communicate the troubles you had with a specific mechanic it reduces them even more.
Make sure you listen to others and vocalize your difficulties when dealing with something.
I want to bring up an example from Uu'Nat progress. We get to p3 for the first time , I get insatiable torment. I know what do, I know where to stand. I stack with the rest of the ranged and make sure I am full hp before the marks happen. All good so far, marks happen I take a bit longer than I should because of a minor mistake with marks, however lunacy is being cast at that time and i drop dead much faster than I expected. Lesson learnt, a defensive is needed at that point and you need to be hasty with mark or find someone with the same mark to be able to heal. I share this with everyone and next time we make it one step further.
Every pull can be a kill.
Efficiency kills bosses.

Min-Max but not in a detrimental way to the rest of the raid.
There are 20 people in the raid and each one's actions and positions affects everyone. Be aware of the impact your actions have and don't be selfish. Learning when you can afford to min-max is a delicate process , in general if you are not sure it's better not to do so.
As an example, say you are ranged and have to spread, you see there is a warlock that started casting drain life , you know that's huge dmg, let him channel it and get away.

Macros can be a huge help and let you focus more on important things
. I am gonna mention a personal experience. I have the responsibility of interrupting an add during Uu'nat which happens during marks. So I have to avoid colliding with everyone , deal damage and interrupt at the same time. Instead of using the normal interrupt, I decided to use focus interrupt which allows me to not have to pay attention to nameplates and instead focus on my movement making it much more consistent and fool proof.

Experiment with the POV
, some abilities are much easier to dodge when using bird's view.
