Welcome to Wowhead's Classic WoW Priest leveling guide! In this guide, we will go over everything you need to know while leveling your Priest in Classic WoW.
If you're looking for the Season of Discovery leveling guides for Priest, be sure to check out our guides below --
Priest DPS Priest Healer
The guide goes over the best Priest talent builds and the best Priest questing zones, to improve your leveling time, available weapon skills for Priest, best Priest stat, and more. We also have tips for when should you go buy spells and which spells to buy, which is a key part to get your mount as fast as possible. Besides that, we have recommendations on the best Priest leveling gear, what pieces to aim for while leveling and more to ensure you reach level 60 quickly.
Ease of Leveling a Priest in WoW Classic
The
牧师
Class is one of the most efficient leveling classes available. While they can kill mobs very quickly, they will be out-of-mana after every mob, which makes it a very slow process. If a Priest takes the correct Build however, they can easily go from mob to mob, without ever having to worry about their Mana pool. In this scenario, the Priest has a slower pace of killing but never has to stop for "down-time" by eating and drinking. That isn't always the case, however, because sometimes you are forced to take on more mobs than you planned for!
Top Things You Shouldn't Miss While Leveling a Priest in WoW Classic
Here are just a few things to keep in mind while leveling your
牧师
.
Complete your

at level 40, and at 60, too.
When approaching
levels 50 and up
, begin checking out your Pre-Raid BiS gear and where it drops. You can begin farming certain dungeons early on, while still gaining XP, to obtain some your Pre-Raid BiS gear before 60.

Racial Abilities for Priests in WoW Classic
Priests have access to two extra spells depending on their race, which can greatly impact the decision as to which race to play. Both priest racials are learned from your races capital city, one at level 10, and another at level 20, in addition to the regular racial abilities.
Level 10
Level 20
Dwarf
Human
Night Elf
Troll
虚弱妖术
Undead
(Human and Dwarf):
This spell is gained at level 10 and is a massive, instant cast self-heal. It can only be used once every 10 minutes, so save this for emergencies only.
(Troll):
Earned at level 10, this spell reduces the targets damage done by a flat amount and reduces their healing taken by 20 percent. Use this to weaken tougher enemies.
(Night Elf):
Earned at level 10, this is a channeled damage spell.
(Undead):
Earned at level 10, this is a buff that decreases the attackers damage by a flat amount when struck in combat, and deals a small bit of damage.
(Human):
Earned at level 20, this spell is a defensive cooldown that will Mana Burn any enemies who cast spells on you while it's active.
(Dwarf):
Earned at level 20, this is the most useful out of all the Priest Racials, this spell gives the Priest the ability to prevent the next fear effect on their target. The thirty-second cooldown combined with the ten minute duration also mean that you can start pre-casting this very early. Very useful in both PVE and PVP.
(Troll):
Earned at level 20, this will deal shadow damage to any attacker who hits you.
(Night Elf):
Earned at level 20, this is a unique defensive cooldown for Night Elf Priests.
(Undead):
Earned at level 20, this is probably one of the more iconic Shadow Priest abilities, this gives Undead access to an additional DoT effect that heals them for the damage it deals.
Priest Leveling Talents in WoW Classic
Below we will outline some common builds for Priests leveling to 60 in SoM, with links to separate guide pages describing them in greater detail.
Shadow Priest Leveling - Shadow DPS in WoW Classic
In SoM, the most recommended leveling spec for Priests is Shadow since it is the only Priest talent tree focused on dealing damage, while still retaining many survivability options, plus the extra armor from
after level 40.
Shadow Priest Leveling Guide - Shadow DPS
Smite Priest Leveling - Holy/Disc DPS in WoW Classic
While most people think Shadow is the go-to spec for leveling, Smite is an incredibly competitive alternative all the way up until around level 42, and even remains viable after that. When leveling as Smite, your damage output will be comparable to Shadow, and your healing abilities will even be slightly enhanced. Therefore Smite is a great allrounder build that can do both solo leveling and dungeon leveling.
Smite Priest Leveling Guide - Dungeon Healing
Holy Priest Leveling - Dungeon Healing in WoW Classic
When leveling as Holy, your damage output will be smaller when compared to Shadow, but your healing abilities will be improved. The main benefit of leveling using deep Holy talents is enhanced healing capabilities for groups. With that, you'll do a little less damage while questing, but have extra survival tools, plus enable your group to run faster dungeons.
If you find yourself leveling mostly through dungeons, Holy might be the right option for you.

Spells to Buy while Leveling as a Priest in WoW Classic
This is a critical section to take the time to read because a common misconception is that you'll need to buy every single ability as you can train them when, in reality, you only need to purchase certain spells at certain levels. This path will save you a lot of travel time, as well as a lot of gold that can go toward buying your first mount at level 40.
Each Priest spec will prioritize slightly different abilities to buy, so we will direct you to our spec guides for exact details:
Smite Spells To Buy
Holy Spells To Buy
Shadow Spells To Buy
Priest Leveling DPS Rotation in WoW Classic
All three Priest specs will have a fairly similar solo leveling DPS rotation, keeping up
暗言术:痛
and finishing off enemies with
射击
wand. This is the most basic and simplest way to understand leveling a Priest. Efficiency, storing Mana for an emergency or to engage in PVP!
While Shadow and Smite Priests can deal the most damage, Holy Priests can also DPS should they find themselves solo without a group to heal.
The guide links below detail the rotation for each Priest leveling build in more detail:

Priest Dungeon Leveling in WoW Classic
Priests are very sought after group members in SoM in general due to the high utility brought by any Priest to a group in form of spells like
,
, and
. When leveling, regardless of their chosen main talent tree, any priest can either heal or DPS dungeons. When DPSing, it is important to remember to bring a lot of water with you, as dealing as much DPS as possible as a Priest can be very mana expensive.
When in a group, regardless of your chosen specialization, you should always have 5 points into
. Try to snipe last hits on enemies with
in order to proc
and maximize your mana regeneration to minimize your downtime. This advice counts for both DPS and Healing Priests.
Priest Dungeon Healing Ability Rotation
All three Priest specs can heal in dungeons, even Shadow Priests. Believe it or not, Shadow Priests are very capable Healers in a Dungeon, as long as they are properly geared, have plenty of water to drink, and are aware of a few specific rotations as a Healer.
The guide links below detail the priority system for Priests Healing while leveling in more detail:

Priest Dungeon Cleave Setup
A popular leveling strategy that has recently surfaced in WoW Classic is a dungeon cleave group.
Let's quickly go over some strategies for a
牧师
who may find themselves in a cleave group.
This is a very fast-paced strategy, and oftentimes groups will spend hours at a time in one particular dungeon.
Your primary objective will be healing. Proper
mana management
is very important, too.
Utilize the 5-second rule to gain increased mana regeneration ticks after not using any mana for at least five seconds
Try to avoid shielding
战士
s, as it prevents rage generation which will decrease their DPS
Organize with your group to help you proc
as often as possible
Ensure you have plenty of food, drinks & reagents in your bags
Downrank spells appropriately to conserve mana

Priest Trainer Locations in WoW Classic
You must train abilities, including their higher ranks, through Priest Trainers. The Priest Class Trainer guide details the locations of all Class Trainers as well as the costs of all abilities. You can also check out the "Spells to Buy while Leveling as a Priest" section of this guide for which are the very best abilities to train, and which you can skip to save gold.

Priest Weapon Skills in WoW Classic
Priests can equip Staves, One-Handed Maces, Daggers and Wands. All Priests begin their journey with the One-Handed Maces and Wand skills learned, and they will need to learn how to equip Daggers and Staves.

At level 10, Priests can visit weapon trainers in capital cities to learn additional weapon skills for each.
Be aware that not all Cities have trainers for all weapon skills - For instance, there is no Staff Trainer in Ironforge.

Best Wands and Gear for Leveling a Priest in WoW Classic
There are two primary sources of wands on a fresh server, enchanting and questing. Wands are essential for Priests at low levels, and as explained in the Priest Leveling Talents section,
is an important early talent pick, which can increase your Wand Damage up to 25%. Plus, wanding takes no mana, reducing downtime to drink.
Gear upgrades are not as important on a Priest, as you should be damaging and wanding mobs, but as covered in the Stats section, Spirit is useful as it scales the talent
.
Healing Set for Leveling Priests
Keeping a healing gear set in your bags is something every Priest should do while leveling. Healing gear consists of three primary things, a lot of Intellect, as much "Mana per 5" as possible, and any bonus Spell healing. Items like
鬼纹腰带
,
大地守望者外衣
, and
缚法之杖
are some examples.
Enchanting Wands
If you're looking to get a wand early on in WoW Classic, then you're going to want to look into enchanting.
次级魔法杖
is the earliest wand you can pick up; it requires 10 skill in enchanting and is created by
次级魔法杖
. This item is generally pretty cheap on a developed server; you can probably find this on the auction house for just a few silver. If you're on a fresh server, you may have to invest some time and resources into leveling enchanting in order to get this wand.
强效魔法杖
is a better version of the previous wand but also takes a bit more effort as it requires to reach 70 enchanting skill to craft it. If you aren't leveling on a fresh server and the auction house has had time to develop, you will be able to purchase this item relatively cheap as well.
Priest Questing Wands (Level 10-19)
As you reach the 10-19 zones, you'll start to discover quests that give you a wand as a reward, if you're speed leveling and not trying to level up your professions in order to get one you will want to rush these quests. Some of the earlier questing wands for each faction include:
人民军之星
: Reward from
西部荒野人民军
in Westfall, available for the Alliance.
精灵魔杖
: Reward from
in Darkshore, available for the Alliance.
矮人火枪
: Reward from
收集石像
in Loch Modan, available for the Alliance.
燃烧之杖
: Reward from
逃跑
in The Barrens, available for the Horde.
凋零魔杖
: Reward from
博伦的巢穴
in Silverpine Forest, available for the Horde.
墓碑节杖
: dungeon quest
/
黑暗深渊中的恶魔
in Blackfathom Deeps.
Priest Leveling Wand Progression
When leveling, wand upgrades will be very impactful for Priests due to the sheer number of times you find yourself wanding mobs to conserve mana, thus, always having the best-possible wand can make your leveling experience much easier and faster.
For DPSing and questing in general, you'll be usually fine always going for Wands that have a higher DPS stat, so you can use that as a rule to see if a weapon is an upgrade or not.
In our Priest Weapons guide, we list all popular Wands and their levels/requirements, either for being Quest Rewards, easily crafted by professions, or easy drop from popular dungeons. We also list notable Main-Hand weapons and Off-hands, although these are less impactful for leveling, simply serving as stat sticks.
Note
, however, that this is not an extensive list of every weapon available while leveling. Don't grow attached to wands and replace them often when you find DPS upgrades on them, even if they are white wands from vendors, as long as they offer better DPS stats.
Priest Weapon and Wand Guide
Stat Weights while Leveling a Priest
Spirit > Spell Power > Intellect > Stamina
Spirit:
Your best leveling talent is
, and as such, you should play to your strengths. By stacking a lot of Spirit, you will reduce the amount of time you would spend drinking while leveling.
Spell Power:
You probably won't come across many items with Spell Power while leveling but, it's worth noting that you should consider wearing any piece of Spell Power gear you come across.
Intellect:
Increases your total Mana pool, as well as providing you with some spell crit.
Stamina:
Increases total health points.
Best Priest Leveling Professions in WoW Classic
Although there are many professions to choose from, some can give a
牧师
a bit of an edge. Many choose to go
裁缝
. With Tailoring, a
牧师
can craft many helpful pieces of gear to aid them in leveling, as well as help get them geared with
Pre-raid BiS
gear such as
信念外衣
.
Although you can pair your Tailoring with other professions,
附魔
complements it nicely because as you level up your Tailoring and craft additional items, you can use your
分解
skill from Enchanting for additional materials. Also, in a Dungeon Cleave group, you'll find no shortage of Cloth or items to disenchant.
For pure raid benefit, there is nothing that beats
工程学
as it allows you to use powerful explosives like
地精工兵炸药
or
to increase raid DPS and also grants you access to many other useful gadgets such as
修理机器人74A型
,
空间撕裂器 - 永望镇
and
安全传送器:加基森
.
If you're looking to just make money, oftentimes players will choose a gathering profession such as
草药学
,
采矿
or
剥皮
.
An alternative for regeneration is bandages from
- Bandages will regenerate a certain amount of health over 8 seconds, have a very short cooldown of 1 minute, and can be created very easily using cloth that you can obtain while leveling. For more information about First Aid and how to level this profession, check our Classic First Aid Guide.
Priest Class Quests in WoW Classic
In WoW Classic, all classes have special quests that are unique to them, providing unique experiences and, more importantly, rewards. For a
牧师
, your specific class quest will depend on your race, either:
Dwarf
Human
Night Elf
Troll
Undead
But don't forget about some of the most epic
牧师
quests, including the chain to get
祈福
/
咒逐
, which requires having
神圣之眼
from the
管理者埃克索图斯
encounter in
熔火之心
, prompting you to then speak to
艾瑞斯·哈文法
in
东瘟疫之地

Changes to Questing in WoW Classic
If you're coming to WoW Classic from any recent expansion for that matter, there are going to be some changes in your questing experience that you will want to be ready for:
Quests and Objectives are not displayed on the map.
To put it: you will have to do some exploring. You will get lost at some point during a quest, and you might have to read the actual quest or go to an external website to find out what you are supposed to be doing. While there are plenty of leveling addons for SoM, part of the game "experience" is feeling immersed in the world and creating an adventure of your very own.
Zones don't guarantee a certain amount of levels:
Once again, coming from one of the later expansions, you might be used to finishing a zone (Vol'Dun for instance) and expecting to be two levels higher. In SoM, the difficulty of zones vary, and especially as a
牧师
, you will want to do a lower difficulty quest. You'll find yourself bouncing between a few zones at any given level range.
Best Priest Questing Zones in WoW Classic
While questing is all about opportunity, exploration, and competition, you should be familiar with some of the better zones for each faction:
黑海岸
(11-19): Once you complete the starting area for your particular race, you begin to have options of where to go, where to quest, and for Alliance, in particular, one of the best early game zones is Darkshore.
洛克莫丹
(10-18): Second to Darkshore would be the Gnome/Dwarf 10-18 zone of Loch Modan. The zone isn't as rich as Darkshore, but, it has some relatively easy quests. This is a good place to come back to and complete the quests once you out-level the content.
西部荒野
(9-18): While these initial questing zones come down to preference, I would not suggest Westfall as a zone in regards to difficulty. However, if you have a group of friends you are leveling with, and you want to go into Deadmines for a quest run and get some higher item level rewards, this zone is worth considering.
赤脊山
(15-25): This is the level range where you will have to bounce between zones of equal difficulty if you want to fill your quest bar from questing alone. Forming an efficient route of the next few zones will be important to increase your leveling speed.
暮色森林
(20-30): This is probably one of my favorite zones; it's full of quests, full of flavor, and has a lot of solid upgrades. Don't miss out on this zone if you play Alliance.
湿地
(20-30): This is probably the last "Alliance only" zone, from here on out you will enter into zones that are contested by both Horde and Alliance.
北贫瘠之地
(10-33): This is the big one, as it is the meeting point for three of the four races of the Horde, this zone has no shortage of quests and will easily propel you toward level 20. As great as this zone is, be ready to compete for mob tags, as there will be a lot of players funneled into this one zone.
银松森林
(10-20): This is the Undead version of The Barrens; it has some decent quests to complete, but, I usually don't end up coming here at all.
石爪山脉
(15-25): Although this zone offers Alliance quests, it is almost entirely a Horde zone. This zone is fantastic as it is right next to the Barrens, and the level range of the two zones overlap.
希尔斯布莱德丘陵
(20-31): Home to the infamous Southshore vs. Tarren Mill world PvP spot, this zone has a lot of good quests for both Alliance and Horde and is usually worked into most people's leveling routes.
灰谷
(19-30): Another flavorful zone as this is the home to what will become Warsong Gulch, plenty of quests for both Alliance and Horde.
千针石林
(24-35): Home to the infamous Shimmer Flats, this is a great zone for both factions to get almost an entire level. It also has a questing hub for Horde.
北荆棘谷
(30-50): probably one of the most infamous zones in the whole of World of Warcraft, you will be coming to this zone off and on from level 30 and up towards level 50.
凄凉之地
(30-39): Home of the dungeon Maraudon, this is one of my favorite zones in the game, and I spend many levels here. There are both Horde and Alliance quest hubs here.
阿拉希高地
(30-40): This zone is home to the 2nd battleground Arathi Basin, there are two hubs here (one for each faction), and there are plenty of good kill quests here.
荒芜之地
(36-45): This is a quick and dirty zone, while it only has a hub for Horde; it is a quick level, and if you have enough players around your level you can do an Uldaman quest run.
塔纳利斯
(40-50): Home to the dungeon Zul'Farrak, I recommend questing here as well as doing a full quest run of ZF.
菲拉斯
(41-60): This is one of the less popular zones for people to quest at, it's worth coming here in your early 40s as there are plenty of quests for both factions.
灼热峡谷
(43-56): This zone is particularly exciting because you get your first taste of the end-game, On one side of Blackrock Mountain is a lower level zone with various quests coming from the Thorium Brotherhood.
燃烧平原
(50-59): The other side of Blackrock Mountain, this is a higher level zone and has hubs for both Horde and Alliance, you will probably come to this zone a couple of times as the level range is quite large. Some dungeon quests come from this zone.
费伍德森林
(47-54): This zone is a must-complete for me as the quests are quite good and you will need to come here to get your
塞纳里奥信标
, which is needed to farm various consumables like
鞭根块茎
.
安戈洛环形山
(48-55): This is another hot zone as it has a plethora of quests and will get you nearly two levels from completing the crater.
西瘟疫之地
(46-57): This zone is excellent for quick leveling, as you can complete the "cauldron" questline for massive amounts of experience. It's worth noting that you need a breadcrumb quest from your faction's major city.
东瘟疫之地
(54-59): Home to the legendary Naxxramas, this zone gives you another taste of the end-game immediately upon questing. You will spend a lot of time here even at max level.
冬泉谷
(55-60): This is an amazing zone, it has a ton of quests that give a ton of experience, and you can get
玛艾里的容器
, allowing you to farm Jujus, a very good consumable for raids.

Leveling Dungeons for Priests in Season of Mastery
While leveling in Classic, often you'll find quests for dungeons appropriate for your level. Classic doesn't have quality of life improvements like Dungeon finder or Group Finder, so players must use default chat channels like General or LookingForGroup to find groups for dungeons.
We have guides for all dungeons in Classic to help you in your journey.

Bag Space in Season of Mastery
One aspect of Classic leveling that many players, especially retail players, often forget is bag space. Unlike when you start a new expansion, starting in Classic means you only have your default backpack available, with meager 14 items lots.
To ease that off, there are some bags that you can easily obtain at the start of the game:
亚麻包
- Created by Tailors. Requires
裁缝
skill level 45 and takes 6x
亚麻布
, obtained from Humanoid enemies, and 3x
粗线
, purchasable at
Tailoring supplies vendors
.
If you have the necessary materials, try asking in General Chat or Trade Chat if any Tailor could help you making that bag. If you find someone, make sure to tip them for their help!
棕色小袋
- Dropped by many different humanoid mobs and sold by
select vendors in early game
for around .
科多兽皮包
- Created by Leatherworkers. Requires
制皮
skill level 40 and is learned from
图样:科多兽皮包
, which is only sold by a Horde vendor. Alliance players may get this pattern by using the Neutral AH in Gadgetzan. Requires 3x
薄科多兽皮
, 4x
轻皮
, and 1x
粗线
.

Closing Thoughts on Leveling a Priest in WoW Classic
Quality of Life changes have been implemented over the years:
If you are coming from
any more modern expansion
, there are going to be a lot of not-so-friendly changes that make questing harder, or at least take more time. Quests and objectives won't be marked on your map, so you will have to do a lot more exploring. There won't be a steady stream of quests from 1-60, so you will have to combine questing and grinding enemies for the experience to level. There's no AoE looting, and quest items take space in your bags. Cooldown abilities are available much less frequently, and there's significantly less personal healing, which adds much more downtime in between pulls as you sit and eat or use First Aid/Alchemy to heal. Playing efficiently is the best thing you can do to speed up your leveling.
Spirit Tap and Wand Specialization are must have Talents:
Both of these Talents combine to make the
牧师
Class one of the most efficient levelers in the game. While not the fastest overall, the Priest doesn't have to completely stop very often to sit down to eat and drink. These two talents are without a doubt the most important for the leveling process.
Buy abilities only when needed:
A lot of people don't think it is possible to afford a mount by level 40, in reality, it's much easier as long as you only buy the necessary spell upgrades to save money. It's also worth noting that following this guide for buying spells will save you a lot of travel time as flights back to major cities or your questing hub can take a lot of time away from leveling.
Wand upgrades are significant for Priests:
Priests have the most diverse toolkit of any healing class in SoM but, your biggest upgrade for leveling will come in the form of a wand with higher DPS. When killing an enemy you will want to
暗言术:痛
it, and
射击
it, rather than cast spells. In doing this, you will save a lot of mana and be able to level more effectively.

Wouldn't it be more beneficial to have wand specialization instead of unbreakable will while leveling? Seeing as wand damage is such a large part of your damage, especially while leveling? Perhaps it would be good to take wand specialization from level 15-19, right after putting 5 points in Spirit Tap.
评论来自
Supurity
You don't want to activate Spirit Tap with MB (as it will be an overkill) but with wanding to not have to drink every two mobs.
So wand specialization is way above Unbreakable will even on a PVP realm.

schintus
You don't actually have to spec shadow, but it will help alot. There's talents that increases your holy damage such as
灼热之光
and
神圣专精
. And you can still pick up
精神分流
and have points left.

I agree with most of your comment. The only change I personally would make is I like to alternate between getting spirit tap and wand spec, and I personally prefer going up to improved MB. Either way works fine.
Wands are indeed op as hell, HIGHLY suggested to get a hold of any and try to do your best to keep them updated when you can.
次级魔法杖
can be crafted at 10 enchanting and requires
次级魔法精华
x1 and used at lvl 5.
强效魔法杖
can be crafted at 70 enchanting and requires
强效魔法精华
x1 and can be used at lvl 13.

worthless guide without precise explanation on how to get a decent wand as soon as possible...

It might be worth mentioning
why
a) having a wand is a must-have (since at low levels wands usually out-DPS whatever spells you might have, especially with 5/5 wand spec).
and
b) you don't want to be casting for the last few %hp before a mob dies (five-second rule = spirit regen is disabled for five seconds after casting a spell). It's no good having 5/5 Spirit Tap if you get exactly zero benefit from the extra spirit for 3-4 seconds every time it procs, because you were spellcasting a mob to death).

It's interesting shadow is mentioned as "the only reasonable spec" to level in, because that's 100% not true.
Vanilla is about the journey and the experience you make of it, and yeah I leveled Holy, 3 times, and it was great! It's slow and painful but guess what you're highly coveted for dungeons, even though that's not a primary leveling method, and it can be a ton of fun. It taught me a LOT of patience.
Point is, if you want to power up to 60 as fast as possible, yes sure go Shadow. But if you want to relax and enjoy the way there, and help your friends along the way, Holy is just as "viable" as anything else.
Plus you'll get invited to every group. Like EVERY GROUP. It's kinda neat. :D

This guide is objectively bad, suggesting to level as shadow is a joke.
1. 5/5 Spirit Tap or 5/5 Wand spec
2. The one you did not choose first from above
3. 5/5 Holy spec
4. 5/5 Divine Fury
5. Whatever
6. Searing Light
Never use MB unless you need a fast nuke.
Use PWS/SWP Sparingly
Try to use up your inner fire stacks while wanding + renew.

I like how you finally picked wand spec, the best leveling talent in game, after everyone told you to. But you still have zero clue why to pick it. This time, instead of deleting my comment for "vulgar content" (LMAO), just delete your guide and copy this over it:
This is genuinely the most embarrassing guide I have ever read on the internet. I am now going to write a better guide in one paragraph because I pity any poor sucker that actually tries to follow this drek.
ASAP: Get Lesser Magic Wand, Get Greater Magic Wand, Get Gravestone Scepter. Google them. Talents, get Wand Spec, get Spirit Tap, Get Pain, get 3/5 hit. Go disc until 40, respec to shadowform, then go disc again. Use Blast>Pain>Wand every mob. If high mana, use smite before 40, mind flay after 40. Keep Fort, Inner Fire, Shield Up.

You should add information about where and how you learn the different weapon specializations. This will be helpful for when people pick up different weapons while leveling.

This guide needs to be reported as "Inaccurate" so we can either get this rewritten or a new person to write this. the large amount of incorrect information in this guide will mislead potentially thousands of people. and as we all know, there are never enough healers. this isn't Icy-veins, let's get the actual correct information out there.

"you aren't going to be a very capable solo leveler". Priest is very effective at leveling and is even capable of reaching level 60 while being proud of the "/played" days. Just buy decent wands whenever you can and you'll do fine as long as you don't overpull mobs, even then you can shield /fear and run or kill whatever you can. Do not spend talents deep in the shadow tree until you are level 40+ as you only need spirit tap and increased debuff duration for SWP. Shadow is only viable after level 40 when you get shadowform. If you haven't played classic/vanilla just get a decent questing guide and you'll be ok.
Do not recommend this guide.

I'd just like to point out some inaccuracies in this guide that may be discouraging to people who don't know much about Classic, or priest specifically in Classic and may be turned away from the class because of it.
For example; "You may struggle to kill enemies. As a Priest especially, you aren't going to be a very capable solo leveler." That's just flat out
wrong
. Priests are Tier 2 levelers in Classic, meaning there are only a handful of classes with a
faster
leveling experience, and perhaps no classes with a more stable leveling experience. The reason for this is 5/5 Wand Specc and 5/5 Spirit Tap, which you should be picking up from 10-19 in 100% of cases. Once you have a wand (very easy to craft a Lesser Magic Wand from Enchanting 10 by level 8) you have the ability to kill mobs with literally 0 downtime. Kill monsters one at a time with this simple rotation, PW:S -> Smite -> SW:P -> Wand, and you'll be going mana neutral. Throw in an extra spell here or there, or pull monsters slightly more aggressively to keep your mana hovering below 90%. Again, for context, going mana neutral with a stable kill speed and access to self healing makes you a monster at leveling particularly from 20-40.
Also; "There's only one option when leveling a Priest, and that's to level using talents from the Shadow tree: gaining access to things like Spirit Tap," again, just flat out wrong. You only
need
Spirit Tap from Shadow, everything else in there is gravy for leveling until 40+.There is even a Smite focused build that performs better than hard shadow until level 40, and even though it's strictly wrong to not take 5/5 Wand Specc and let your wand carry you, if you were determined to level a Priest without a wand focused playstyle, you'd go Holy/Shadow hybrid. But that's like being determined to level a hunter with no pet.
Finally, "Tier 3: At 20 you should go ahead and take Mind Flay" Mind Flay doesn't become a Damage per Mana Spent efficient spell until you get access to Shadow Weaving and higher ranks of the spell itself. Taking Mind Flay at 20 is strictly wrong for efficiency and kill speed, as wanding with a SW:P on the target is actually the top dps rotation for a level 20 priest (assuming no ludicrous +spell power twink items). Taking Mind Flay at 20 also requires you to ignore Wand Specc (horrible idea) and provides less value to you per talent point than say, Improved Power Word: Shield or even Improved Power Word: Fort.
There are some drawbacks to Priest leveling for sure, such as wand dependency, but it's countered by this simple fact:
When it comes to spending 10 talent points before level 40, there are no 10 talent points more potent for solo questing/grinding than Spirit Tap and Wand Specc. It's a Tier 2 leveling build that requires only level 19 to unlock. It also leaves you very flexible with talents moving into the 20-40 range, which means you'll be able to take a few healer talents and be able to heal dungeons comfortably without respeccing, which is invaluable when leveling in Classic. Loads of "best in slot" leveling gear can be found from dungeon quests and bosses, and having access to healing dungeons in the same specc that makes you a Tier 2 leveler is quite nice, and no other class can do that.
In conclusion this guide's heart is in the right place and a lot of the information is useful, but it's strictly wrong on how to build a priest for leveling in Classic. Shadow Priest is a really fun spec, and can really tear it up in PvP when played well, but it's godawful for leveling until 40+. After level 40 it's 100% viable to go hard Shadow, but I tend to stay Wand specc till 60 personally. I just like the flexibility it gives me compared to Shadow in group content.
I don't claim to be an expert at priest, but I did main one in Vanilla (and on and off since), I've been in contact with folks who played it on the beta, and I have been testing and refining my leveling path and builds on the next closest thing ;)

You can find a cool spreadsheet of wands in Vanilla here:

Honestly, this guide is more detrimental than helpful. People following it might do worse than they would do by just following their own ideas.
The biggest issue is that much of the sub-optimal advice here isn't even stated simply as a possibility or a suggestion, but it's stated as if they were an absolutely necessity.
Like the guide author stating that Priest
has to be Shadow
to level. Shadow is a viable leveling spec, but it isn't even necessarily the best one.
Stating that Priests have a hard time leveling solo is also really weird and seem to be more based on an ongoing stereotype than on actual experience. Priests are one of the most self-sufficient classes, which make for a steady and easy leveling experience (though it indeed isn't the
fastest
one).

Duskwood is NOT friendly to Lvl 10 characters. Guide should be updated to recommend that zone for 20-30 instead. Thanks.

Gravestone Scepter
is a really powerful Wand and you get it super early if you do it right.
The quest can be accepted as early as lvl
18
and you can enter the dungeon at level
19
.
You might need to convince your group that you can heal this, but if aren't completely sh*t then it is no problem to heal the dungeon at around level 19.
update
Just healed the dungeon again with a decent group and being lvl 21 as a Dwarf Disc Priest. This is totally doable, but my tank was an excellent player and we still had some rough moments. Even if you get this Wand at like 26, it is still extremely nice to have and will carry you to 30 and into Stranglethorn and Monastary where you will replace it.

I'd have to go back YEARRRRRSSSS thru my google photos and check the screen shots i took.. shesh.. but yea.. i just.. i dont feel like this is right.. i mean i might be wrong but.. eh..

Have you tried going to an AH and spending less than 1g to get full crafted or bad but only spirit gear? And actually try a spell rotation without using aa.? starting at lvl 20
