Staff note: This guide is outdated but kept up for Archival purposes due to the positive feedback it received when it was relevant.
Foreword : Please note that this short guide is aimed at returning players from the Pre-Cataclysm Era!
I have recently returned to WoW and realised I had been hoarding various Lockboxes in the bank until my baby Rogue was of a high enough level to open them. You see, I'm an altoholic and like to be self-reliant so I try to have all the professions covered.
My
Rogue
was purely a profession character, until recently when I decided I wanted to take her out for a spin and try to get her to the point where she could unlock all my troves of treasure! That's when I realised something. What was probably straightforward and long accepted info to players that had played Cataclysm from launch, wasn't exactly obvious to me, as a returning player. The majority of info I came across elsewhere on the internet is now simply out of date and can therefore be misleading. I thought I would try to help out by writing this.
Here is what I have learned about Cataclysm-Era Pick Lock!
Skill Development
Firstly, this skill is no longer similar to a profession, in that you no longer need to use it in order to level it up. Pick Lock is directly linked to your Character Level (CLvl) and, as such, is a 'fixed' value. The bright side of this development is that you can no longer be a sub-standard lock picker for your level, as your skill automatically reaches the maximum proficiency for your CLvl the moment you reach that new CLvl! It also means that the need to roam around the world to practice your lock picking abilities, to ensure you stay at the top of your 'counter-security' game, is now a thing of the past!
I only wish I had realised this
before
I went off backpacking around Azeroth!
A Helping Hand
Obviously, it is still far more conveinient to have your
Pick Lock
ability dragged onto an action bar to assist in rapid picking. On a similar note the
Glyph of Pick Lock
(Learnable at CLvl 25) will also help, making picking an instant cast as opposed to a channeled type skill.
Also, note that this skill is learned from the
Rogue Trainer
at CLvl 20 and that each time you level you get 5 'skill points' in Pick Lock. I would guess that this means that as soon as you learn Pick Lock, you automatically have 100 skill in it. This means that as soon as you hit CLvl 20, and train the skill, you can open the first 7 tiers of Lockboxes instantly.
Basically to work out your Pick Lock level, multiply your CLvl by 5 as you always did. To work out CLvl needed for a particular Lockbox, check the list below!
Alternatively, divide the Lockbox Skill requirement by 5 and you wiil get the Clvl you need to unlock it.
Lockbox Levels
As before, Lockboxes still require a minimum proficiency in Pick Lock to enable you to open them. In practice what this now actually means is that they require you to be a particular
CLvl
in order to unlock them. This list, though maybe not exhaustive, will give you a round up of some of the different Lockbox requirements, enough to allow you to find your feet once again with lockpicking.
You read the info as "Name of Lockbox" - "Lockbox skill requirement" - "CLvl needed"

Conclusion
Hopefully this will give you the information returning players need to get to grips with the Pick Lock changes. Obviously there are a lot more unlockable items in the game, but I only really wrote this guide as a grounding, not to be an exhaustive list of absolutely everything Lock Picking!

It is more like a personal narrative than a guide, and what information is here could be summed up in a few sentences or in a comment. Try to avoid "I would guess" and other speculation, because
you
are the one writing the guide, and guides are meant to elucidate the specified topic, not obscure it with speculation.
That being said, this idea isn't bad at all. Were you to do the additional research and provide a comprehensive guide that
briefly
introduces the basics of the Lockpicking skill and goes into detail on the various lockboxes and chests and what
unique
things can be found inside them (the Wasteling pet, or the coveted classic epic weapons, for example), this would improve it immensely.

Thank you for writing this guide, it did help me understand why I couldn't find lockpicking in my professions tab and couldn't upgrade my skills at the local rogue trainer. I was afraid I would waste skill points if I just opened lockboxes that were of yellow skill to me, but now I just got the glyph you mentioned and opened them all up. :)

It makes me wonder if this is accurate any longer.
Just returning to wow on my 85 rogue and just started that panderia stuff. Every lockbox I pickpocketed in the initial starting zone shows it requires lvl 450 lock picking to open. What is up with that? I get lvl 450 lock boxes but can only open lvl 425 boxes.. Why didnt they put 425 boxes in the start zone instead? Have had to use the mail system between toons as storage until my char lvls enough to be able to open them..
