What's This Guide For?
This is a generic guide for how to farm old raids the "easy" way using multiple alts, the Group Finder, and lockout extensions to make your life a bit easier every week.
This method was mainly created for farming a specific rare drop, like a mount, from a targetted boss in a sizable raid. For example, I've used it for farming
米米尔隆的头部
in
奥杜尔
and
无敌的缰绳
in
冰冠堡垒
, both of which require quite a bit of leg work before you even reach the respective bosses that drop the mounts. I really wanted to find a short cut, so I combined a bunch of tips and tested a bunch of different things to come up with this. Those raids each have their own paths once you're inside, and I wrote specific guides for those on their respective loot pages, but since the setup and method is basically the same for both, I figured a generic version of the guide would also be helpful.
You can apply this to any raid/drop, or modify it to farm for whatever you want, like old transmogs or tokens, etc. Feel free to experiment. This is just a base for you to start with.
Farm Away
Choosing your Main Toon & Clearing the Raid
This is where you set up your main toon and clear the raid to make way for your alts. Through lockout magic that will be explained later, you only have to do this part once. You'll start each subsequent week on Part 2 of this guide.
Choose your
MAIN TOON
to be the lockout holder. You want someone who can clear (most of) the raid solo.
Set the raid difficulty to Normal Difficulty and raid size to whatever you need for your item to drop.
If you need Heroic for whatever you're farming (like ICC 25 Heroic for Invincible's Reins), fear not. You have to select Normal here for lockouts to work properly but you can swap to Heroic later. I'll tell you when.
Enter the raid with your
MAIN TOON
and clear up to, but not including, the boss that drops your item. Clear all the trash up to the boss but leave that boss alive!E.g. In our Invincible's Reins example, you would clear through Sindragosa and NOT kill the Lich King.
Exit the raid.
OPTIONAL: Log into each of your alts and park them outside the raid entrance. This isn't necessary now but it does help with your sanity when swapping alts later. I recommend binging something on Netflix while you do this.
Now you're set up to farm the raid each week. Just log into your
MAIN TOON
and run through Part 2 of this guide.
Running with Alts
You'll be swapping your alts in and out of a group with your main toon and killing the boss repeatedly to farm for the drop.
Create a custom group in Group Finder then log out of your
MAIN TOON
while still in the group.
Log into
ALT 1
and join the custom group you made. (Search by title to find it more quickly.) Log out.
Log into
MAIN TOON
and accept
ALT 1
into the group. Log back into
ALT 1
.
Wait for
ALT 1
to become group leader (it's short; 60-90 seconds or so) and set difficulty to Normal.
Even if it's already on Normal, re-select it! This will save you lots of frustration, trust me.
Enter the raid on
ALT 1
. Check the lockout notice carefully to make sure your desired boss is still alive and then accept the lockout.
Make sure the number shown reflects the bosses you actually killed and doesn't include the ones you didn't. You can also check to make sure the name of the boss you want is in green when you mouse over, meaning it's still alive. E.g. In our ICC example, that means the number should say 11/12 and the Lich King's name should be green.
If you get no lockout notice, or you do but the count is off and/or the name of the boss you want is red, DO NOT ACCEPT/CONTINUE!
Exit the instance, re-select the Normal again, and re-enter.
You may also have to "Reset all instances". This is never necessary on my ICC runs, for example, but has come up for other instances.
If everything looks good with the lockout when you enter, accept.
If you need to change difficulties, now is the time. The instance will reload and you will need to check/accept that lockout as well.
E.g. For Invincible's Reins, you'd enter on Normal, accept the lockout, change the difficulty to Heroic, the instance will reload, and then check/accept the new Heroic lockout. (It should still be 11/12 with Lichy's name in green.)
Run through the now-cleared raid to the boss you need and SLAY IT to steal its loot.
No drop? Exit the raid/leave the group on this alt and repeat steps 1-7 with your same main toon + next alt until you've gone through them all.
If you still have no drop after you've gone through every alt, I feel your pain. Once you're done sobbing, move on to Part 3.
If something goes wonky on you during this process, you can always switch back to
MAIN TOON
and start again at step 1. I've had weeks where, for whatever reason, a certain alt just won't show the proper lockout—the boss I want is dead and there's nothing I can do about it. Just abandon the group and start with a fresh one on
MAIN TOON
with the next alt. That wonky alt will likely work fine again next week.
So You Still Didn't Get Your Drop...
When you're out of alts for the week with no drop to show for it, you'll have to wait for next week and try again. Here's where lockout magic comes in. Each new week, simply do the following:
Log into
MAIN TOON
and extend the lockout for the raid.
Go to the Social window, in the
Raid
tab, and click the
Raid Info
button. Select the raid you want and extend it.
Complete Part 2 of this guide with all your alts.
Repeat again each week until your dreams finally come true.
This is really handy for long raids like ICC or Ulduar because it takes soooo long to clear them. You forego the extra run that week on your main toon but it's worth it to save hours each subsequent week.
If it's a short raid, or for some reason you actually like repeatedly clearing really long raids, you can instead log back into your main toon every week and kill the boss for that one extra chance at the drop. You'll just need to start fresh on Part 1 every week instead of extending the lockout and repeating only Part 2.
Timewalking Issues
I've heard that some old raids that also have a Timewalking version may not play nice with this method. For example, Ulduar used to work fine but has had some weird issues after Timewalking was added. I'm still testing this and will update if I find useful.
The End
There's a lot here but it's pretty simple once you get the hang of it. You'll be swapping alts like a pro in no time.
I hope this helps and that all your wildest loot dreams come true.
Good luck! (•̀o•́)ง

Due to auto-accept now being limited to group destined to kill world bosses and some rares, and the same function only being accessible through addons (which you must be logged on for them to work), I guess this guide lost its purpose for the time being.

Just tried this, doesn't seem to work anymore.

Found the fix to Ulduar. This works 100% of the time but has to be completed exactly in this order. Does not require multiple accounts either.
Enter saved Ulduar with main (I go to Yogg-Saron's Lair)
start LFG in legacy raids
log out and on to alt
request to join group
log out and on to main
accept inv
log out and on to alt
accept invite
ZONE IN BEFORE LEAD PASSES TO ALT
wait for lead to pass
BOOT MAIN FROM GROUP
kill boss and fail at getting Mimiron's head
leave instance and
DROP
group
BEFORE
logging out
-Rinse/repeat-
Side Note: If you want to be super efficient with your time, set all of your alts' hearthstones to Bouldercrag's Refuge. The flight path to storm peaks and then flying into the Ulduar instance takes about 75 seconds. It takes approx. 92 seconds for the lead to pass to your alt so you will be zoned in still before this happens. This allows you to use your alts for other things throughout the week and just hearth them back before you log out. Also skips the wait time for logging out of your alt when you're flipping back and forth. If you have the brutosaur mount you can post auctions after you zone in but before you port to Yogg's lair. I'm realizing as I type this.... I've done this way too many times....

Only thing I'd note is that in Step 13, the alt cannot drop group, since she's the only one in it.
I should clarify. I mean drop out of group finder so you don't confuse yourself with multiple private groups showing up for yourself. Convenience thing, not really necessity.
9mmx19: this instance no longer has different difficulties. It's now only one difficulty due to timewalking changes a while back. This is actually what causes the weird bug making it easy to bork your lockouts if not done properly.
TheCapn24: I have never had issues with OP's method except on Ulduar, but then again I haven't alt farmed others as heavily as I do Ulduar.

For expansions with bonus rolls can you keep on killing the boss on the alt and use the rolls multiple times a week?
Edit: Got around to trying this and it didnt work for SoO unless I zoned in before lead passed to the alt. I at least spawned at the boss I wanted which didnt happen if i zoned after lead passed.
After that i couldnt change the difficulty though which made my normal clear a waste of time. Seems like i should have cleared heroic on the lockout holder. Apparently it wont work for Mythic.

As of 10/14, this trick no longer works. They disabled the ability to change difficulties while inside the raid. Perhaps just doing it on heroic up until the last boss works instead?

This no longer works. I followed the instructions exactly and it not only locked out my main saying the last boss of Dragon Soul was dead, it also locked out my alt I joined the group with. Now I've wasted an entire week on both.
DELETE THIS POST SO IT DOESN'T SCREW UP ANYONE ELSE.

This farming guide is a bit outdated. But... the method of creating a raidgroup and log in and out to get an alt into a raidgroup to get saved, still works perfectly for Ulduar. (Dragonflight, patch 10.1.7) .
Pwofese's guide in the comments is much simpler to follow. Could add though. Just put the raid to private, name wont matter, your alts will see it highlighted in groups. And while you are waiting for lead to pass you can start the fight with Yogg to optimize time (if you are flying from Bouldercrag). And also just delist the group when the pop-up window appears, then kick your main. Its very simple.
Ive read that the Head of Mimiron only drops from Ulduar 25. That is outdated as well and not true anymore. Why this is an issue for some is because, if raids are set to 25 and you enter Ulduar it will still say "10". It has been like that since the patch that made raids flexible. But the loot tables was also merged. Meaning that the head drops whatever the amount of players in group/setting. And I can confirm that, since the mount dropped for me while it said 10 by the map after about 60 tries. I also recieved the achievement:
我来组成头部!
that has the description: "Obtain Mimiron's Head from 25-player Yogg-Saron with no keepers assisting you." that ofcourse will confuse people, but you get it even if you are solo in 10.
Good luck with your farming!
