Introduction
The purpose of this guide is to teach you how to turn your garrison into something more than just a daily routine. The following setup came out of the result of a weeks worth of tracking gold income through strictly garrison missions and their rewards. With the variety of buildings and multitude of follower traits, one can easily transform their garrison experience into a highly profitable gold making machine. The success you will personally have is going to be vastly different than that of mine, so keep in mind that your mileage will vary due to the variables present with doing this; during my week long sample period, I was able to bring in roughly 122k gold using 11 characters. While the end result is very lucrative, please do keep in mind that the setup involved and the work required to reach the point where things are running like clockwork can seem daunting. For those interested in continuing on through this guide, I hope you enjoy your time reading this and are able to implement it successfully to further the usefulness of your garrison. This is my very first guide here on Wowhead and may contain a few spelling or grammatical errors. I plan to maintain semi-regular updates as new content is added or new garrison gold making tactics are discovered. Feel free to contact me through twitter

Getting Started
To get things in a position of profitability we have to cover what is obviously the two biggest points of this guide. Without the proper buildings or followers with ideal traits, you run the risk of severely limiting the amount of gold you can produce. Using the right buildings can increase your missions variety, ability to acquire followers with specific traits, and offer additional gold making opportunities you otherwise may undervalue.
Buildings
The choice you make in buildings is one of the most important things you do for your garrison. While we have our preference of what we want to have, there are a few buildings that are far too good to not have. Below is the breakdown of what I have settled upon as the ideal setup of buildings and I currently have this identical setup on all of my characters. I personally feel as though these buildings are mandatory in order to amplify your garrison's gold making capabilities.
Before I being this sections I would like to touch on two common questions I have been asked in regards to the choice of buildings and how I do things:
Why do I feel as though the Barn isn't worth having?
I do not use the Barn because I do not wish to spend more time than I need to working on my garrisons. I currently maintain 11 garrisons on the same realm and outside of my main character. I aim to spend approximately 5 minutes per character doing maintenance, outside of the day I have set aside for the purpose of clearing out salvage crates.
Do you clear your herb garden or mine?
I do not clear either of them for the same reason I do not feel the barn is worth having. If you have the extra time to spend collecting from either of these two buildings, I would go ahead and do it.
Small Buildings
Storehouse(Level 3)
-
Optional but recommend
- see comments
Increases the amount of work orders that each building can have overall.
Allows quick access to your personal and guild banks while in your garrison, without a cooldown.
Also gives access to a transmogrification NPC within your garrison.
Salvage Yard(Level 3)
-
Mandatory
Allows for the chance to obtain the following items upon mission completion:
from level 90 - 94 missions with a Level One or higher Salvage Yard.
from level 95 - 99 missions with a Level Two Salvage Yard. Level 100 missions are guaranteed to return with one.
from level 95 - 99 missions with a Level Three Salvage Yard. Level 100 missions are guaranteed to return with one.
The salvage you gather through missions is extremely valuable to anyone looking to make some easy gold. Inside the
can be all sorts of wonderful things most notably are the following:
Chance for Bind on Equip Warlord's Epics
Class specific item level 610 transmogrification pieces which are excellent for disenchanting and easily the largest contributor to enchanting dust
Tons of vendor trash and Bind on Equip greens for vendor value or disenchanting
Profession materials
Follower Upgrade items
In order to build a Salvage Yard
you must first complete this quest chain
beginning at Pinchwhistle Gearworks in Spires of Arak:
Defungination
Spore-be-Gone
Unwanted Pests
The Mother Lode
Getting the Crew Back Together
Clearing Out Before Cleaning Up
Follow that Hotrod!
Field Trial
Skimming Off the Top
The Right Parts for the Job
Sporicide
Curing With Force
Preventing the Worst
Flame On
The
Level 3
version of the building is obtained through completing the achievement
and is account wide; so once you earn it on one character you have it available on all your alts.
The final small building plot is completely up to your preference, feel free to check out the
Guide to Small Garrison Buildings
for ideas. I do not recommend the
Enchanter's Study
unless you are in dire need of the materials produced. Regardless of what building you settle on for your third small plot, make sure you keep work orders going.
Use Group Finder for an Enchanter's Study, don't waste your plots!
Medium Buildings
Inn/Tavern(Level 3)
-
Mandatory
The level 3 version of the Lunarfall Inn / Frostwall Tavern is unlocked by completing the achievement
and is account wide; so once you earn it on one character you have it available on all your alts.
This building allows for the easy recruitment of
Treasure Hunter
followers, but on a one recruit per week basis. It also allows for Treasure Hunter Missions to appear on your available missions list, which are marked with a cash roll icon.
Trading Post(Level 3)
-
Optional, highly recommended
Allows for the exchange of
for crafting materials, which serves as a means to convert excess
into gold. Also allows the use of crafting materials in the creation of work orders granting additional
.
The level 3 version of the Trading Post is unlocked by completing the achievement
and is account wide; so once you earn it on one character you have it available on all your alts.
Large Buildings
Barracks(Level 3)
-
Optional, but recommended
Increases the total amount of followers you can have active at one time from 20 to 25.
Unlocks Patrol Missions at level three that more often than not have no gold reward, but offer additional mission that have the ability to produce salvage.
For your other large building plot place whatever you feel you need, feel free to check out the
Guide to Large Garrison Buildings
for ideas. My preference on the second large building is
Mage Tower / Spirit Lodge(Level 3)
which allows for the collection of
Ogre Waystones
that can be used to open fast travel portals in the Draenor zones or for work orders that can potentially contain
Mission Completion Orders
.
Followers
The other key component to this guide is about having the right kind of followers. For the purpose of this guide, we will be focusing mainly on obtaining followers with the
Treasure Hunter
trait. There are several other important traits and specific followers discussed, but having as many
Treasure Hunters
as possible will only increase your gold gains. This is where having a level 3 inn comes in handy, as you can specifically request followers with the
Treasure Hunter
trait.
Specific Followers to Note:
Garona Halforcen
due to her ability
Master Assassin
, which increases the success rate of missions she is on. This ability is protected and cannot be replaced when using an item that replaces any traits. She is obtained by completing the quest
My Garona
, which is part of the Legendary quest chain. This follower benefits from the
Ally of Argus
follower trait for Alliance players and
Child of Draenor
for Horde players.
Blook
due to his ability
Combat Experience
, which increases the success rate of missions he is on. This trait is protected and cannot be replaced when using an item that replaces any traits. He is obtained by completing the quest
I Am Blook
in Gorgrond. This follower benefits from the
Ogre Buddy
follower trait.
Harrison Jones
is excellent for leveling new followers with desired traits due to
Mentor
, which causes any followers with him on a mission to be scaled up to his follower level and follower item level. It is also a protected trait and cannot be replaced. He also comes standard with
Treasure Hunter
which adds another follower with this ability to your garrison, but it is not a protected trait and can be replaced. He is obtained by completing the achievement
Master Relic Hunter
/
Master Relic Hunter
.
Profession Specific Followers
- These followers come with the listed profession by default and if you use an item to retrain them they can lose their profession trait.

Tips and Addons
Some items from the salvage aren't worth putting on the AH due to the AH cuts, listing fees, high vendor values, or disenchant value.
Having all your followers be
Treasure Hunters
might seem like too much, but there is really no such thing.
Reroll followers if you must feel like you must, but monitor your garrison resources so you do not run out.
Always have all your followers on missions when logging for an extended period of time.
Do not be afraid to fail a mission, it happens and will happen...even at 97% success rate.
Set aside your least busy day of the week to clear your inventory of salvage crates.
Make use of the buildings you don't have through group finder or friends.
Some buildings aren't as good to have as you think they are.
Keep work orders filled.
Master Plan
The only addon that I feel is required for garrison mission management is
Master Plan -
. The addon add a load of functionality to the garrison interface. It adds the ability to quickly and efficient place followers in the available mission slots by offering a one click button per mission that shows the success chance, as well as, experience and gold gains expected. It can keep track of the total number of traits and ability counters your followers have, show missions of interests that have large gold, garrison, and loot rewards. It also adds a button on the completed missions tab to one click complete all missions and claim your rewards. I am sure I have overlooked something the addon does, but it is very useful and easily a must have.

Why is the Storehouse mandatory? I don't see bank access as a crucial feature as it is literally just one portal away from the garrison to Warspear/Stormshield. Extra workorders are also kind of useless, unless you are logging in only once every 3 days or so after the default 21 are completed. If the building provided some way of completing concurrent workorders, it's a different story, though.
Other than that, the information in the guide was very helpful, especially the follower information.

With the changes in 6.2, the salvage yard is no longer mandatory. Everything else is still relevant :)
