Field Guide to the Skeletons of Azeroth
Table of Contents
Introduction
Section A: Skeletons by Faction
Section B: Triage
Notes
Introduction
At one time or another every player must have come across the aftermath of some horrific battle, and gazing across a field littered with skeletons, wondered, "What the heck happened here?"
The purpose of this guide is to help players decipher the remains of such events. By examining the skeletons found lying on the ground, it may be possible to distinguish a mere episode of high level players ganking lowbies in a questing zone, from perhaps a raid group's multiple failed attempts to take down a world boss, or an epic battle between the full might of Alliance and Horde forces to assert their dominance over a zone.
In Section A of this guide, I have provided reference photographs of skeletons of each race listed by faction and arranged alphabetically. In Section B, I have created something of a triage process for sorting through the various skeletons and identifying them, discussing the distinctive points to look for. Many skeletons have very similar appearances, and hopefully the points discussed here will allow the reader to make a definite identification of any skeleton's race.
I expect that those players who have an interest in archaeology and lore will have the most interest in reviewing this guide. But thank you to anyone who stops by to take a look, and I hope you might find it helpful.

Select a tab to view reference photos of skeletons by race. Or go to Section B to go through the triage process and read the discussion.

1. Does the skeleton have a head like a soccer ball and paddle-like hands and feet?
2. Does the skeleton have a tail?
3. Does the skeleton's skull have a snout?
4. Is the skeleton tiny, with a proportionally very large head?
If the answer to all of the first four questions is NO, and you seem to be facing a very average looking humanoid skeleton, then continue to ask the following:
5. Is the skeleton face up?
6. Is the skeleton face down?
7. Is the skeleton lying on its side facing the right?
8. Is the skeleton lying on its side facing the left?
1. Does the skeleton have a head like a soccer ball and paddle-like hands and feet?
Yes. Then this a Pandaren. The male Pandaren skeleton will be very large; The rib cage is almost spherical, and is at least twice as wide as the skull. The female Pandaren skeleton is smaller and more evenly proportioned; The hips are slightly wider than the rib cage, and the rib cage is only slightly wider than the head. If there is any doubt between a male or female Pandaren's skeleton, the male skeleton's left arm is bent up at the elbow, while the female's arms are nearly straight.

2. Does the skeleton have a tail?
Yes. Then this is a Draenei. If the skeleton's chest is very slender, not wider than the hips or the head, and the head has horns, then this is a female Draenei's skeleton. If the skeleton has a massive chest, and has no horns on the head, then this is a male Draenei's skeleton.

Return to Triage
3. Does the skeleton's skull have a snout?
Yes. Then this is either a Tauren or a Worgen.
Is the skeleton lying face-down with both arms splayed out?
Yes. Then this is a male Tauren skeleton.
Tauren male skeleton:
Is the skeleton lying slightly on its right side facing to the left?
Yes. Then this is a male Worgen's skeleton in its wolf form.
Worgen male skeleton in wolf form:
Is the skeleton lying on its left side facing to the right?
Yes. Then this is either a female Tauren or a female Worgen.
If the skull is facing forward, both hands are parallel next to each other pointing forward, and the legs have a short, stocky appearance, then this is a female Tauren.
Tauren female skeleton:
If the skull is facing upwards, one hand is pointing upwards, while the other is at the chest, and the legs are long with very distinct knees and feet, then this is a female Worgen's skeleton in its wolf form.

4. Is the skeleton tiny, with a proportionally very large head?
Yes. Then this is either a Gnome or a Goblin
Is the skull facing to the right?
Yes. Then this is a Gnome. If the skull is lying flat on its side facing to the right, then this is a male Gnome. If the skull is facing up, and only slanted slightly to the right, then this is a female Gnome.
Gnome male skeleton:
Gnome female skeleton:
Is the skull facing to the left?
Yes. Then this is a Goblin. If the arms are spread almost straight out, then this is a female Goblin. If the arms are slanted down toward the hips, then this is a male Goblin.

If the answer to all of the first four questions is NO, and you seem to be facing a very average looking humanoid skeleton, then continue to ask the following:
5. Is the skeleton face up?
Yes. This is either a Blood Elf male, a Dwarf male, or an Undead male.
If the knees are bent slightly to the left, one arm is down at the side and the other is folded across the chest, then this is a male Blood Elf.
Blood Elf male skeleton:
If the arms are splayed out fairly symmetrically, the arms are approximately as long as the legs, and the the skull is looking straight up, then this is a male Dwarf.
Dwarf male skeleton:
If the arms are splayed out, but the arm on the left is extended much higher, the legs are clearly longer than the arms, and the skull is facing to the left, then this is an Undead male.
Undead male skeleton:
Return to Triage
6. Is the skeleton face down?
Yes. Then this is either a Human male, a Worgen male in its human form, a Night Elf male, an Orc Male, or an Undead female.
If both arms are splayed out from the sides, the legs are almost straight behind the body, and the head is facing to the left, then this is either a male Human, or a male Worgen in its Human form.
Human male skeleton:
Worgen male skeleton in Human form:
If the right arm is down at the side of the body, the left arm is bent at the elbow and pointing up, the left leg is bent at the knee, and the head is facing to the left, then this is a male Night Elf.
Night Elf male skeleton:
If both arms are angled down toward the sides, both legs are very straight, forming a strong trapezoidial shape with the pelvis, the rib cage is extraordinarily large and bulky, and the head is facing to the left, then this is a male Orc.
Orc male skeleton:
If the head is facing almost straight down but slightly to the left, the whole body is angled slightly to the left, both arms are down at the sides, the left leg is bent at the knee, and the right leg is slightly flexed at the knee with the knee pointing slightly to the left, then this is an Undead female.
Undead female skeleton:
Return to Triage
7. Is the skeleton lying on its side facing the right?
Yes. Then this is either a Blood Elf female, a Dwarf female, a Human female or Worgen female in its Human form, an Orc female, a Troll female, or a Troll male.
If one hand is in front of the face, the other hand is down by the hip behind the body, and one knee is raised higher than the other, then this is a female Blood Elf.
Blood Elf female skeleton:
If the arms and legs appear very short and stunted, and both hands are parallel, pointed in front of the body, then this is a female dwarf.
Dwarf female skeleton:
If the knees are together, but one knee is bent so that the feet are quite far apart, approximately the distance of two feet between them, the hands are both extended in front of the body, but one hand is above the skull, then this is a female Human, or a female Worgen in its Human form.
Human female skeleton:
Worgen female skeleton in Human form:
If both knees are together, the feet are slightly apart, one arm is extended almost straight in front of the body, one is tucked under the body, and the skull is looking down at the knees, then this is a female orc.
Orc female skeleton:
If both knees are together, the toe of one foot is almost touching the heel of the other, and both elbows are bent with the hands close to the body, then this is a female Troll.
Troll female skeleton:
If both knees are together and strongly bent, both feet are together, and both arms are almost together with the elbows bent and the hands near the face as if the skeleton were merely taking a nap, then this is a male Troll.
Troll male skeleton:
Return to Triage
8. Is the skeleton lying on its side facing the left?
Yes. Then this is a female Night Elf. The skeleton almost appears to be running with one knee strongly bent, one arm behind the body, and one arm in front.

Notes:
1. Only the skeletons produced by the death of a playable character are discussed in this guide. There are numerous other static skeletons that appear in the game merely as scenery and decorations which are not discussed here.
2. All references to left and right are from the viewer's perspective as if standing at the feet of the skeleton. Any exceptions referring to the skeleton's own left or right side will be clearly mentioned in the text.
3. The Ancona Chicken pet in each of the screen shots is there merely to give a consistent size reference for each of the skeletons.
4. Terrain which is not perfectly flat can cut off some extremities of the skeleton, such as fingers or feet when a screen shot is taken.
5. The face of a skeleton can very easily be obscured depending on the angle at which the screen shot is taken. The face will not appear in many shots from directly overhead.
6. The position of the skeleton does not always match the final position of the death animation. For instance, male dwarves fall forward on their face when dying, but the skeleton is lying face up with the head where the feet had been. The descriptions herein are only for skeletons seen on the ground after the character has been resurrected, and do not at all relate to the death animations.
7. A Worgen's skeleton might take two forms depending on the circumstances of the character's death. If it is killed while in combat, the skeleton will show up in its wolf form. Deaths from falling or drowning, however, can produce a skeleton in the human form. Context can therefore be important in determining a skeleton's race.

I would like to thank you for this guide. Though I never paid much attention to the skeletons after our raid wipes I could always determine which was mine as the lone male gnome much of the time. Now I can recognize the corpse races of my other guildies. I happened upon this just by browsing the other guides available. Good work and well done.

Oh ho!
You actually took the time to get screenshots of all the skeletons? Great guide! Mine was/is usually lodged into weird locations from mount and parkour mishaps.

Ha! I am so glad that I am not the only one who tries to figure out what race that skeleton I come across is! Thanks for this :D

Great guide. Even better when you read it out loud in your best Sir David Attenborough impersonation.

Great guide, I always wondered if you could tell the race of a player from their remains.

It really sucks you can only have 1 skeleton per person now. I havent seen a pile of skeletons in a LOOOONG time. Now it's just one here and there. Even in BG's there won't be many. Really disappointing honestly.

This guide is SO GOOD! For years and years I thought to myself I needed to make a guide -or reference document, at least- like this. Today I decided to look it up and I find this! Well done!
