British Poetry
At Cataclysm's launch, many starter items were references to British poetry--illvl 346 Justice Point gear, Cataclysm reputation rewards, and ilvl 359 Valor Point gear. Keats' poems were heavily featured, and T.S. Eliot, Shakespeare, Tennyson, and Wordsworth had items as well.
British poetry and WoW may seem to be an unlikely pairing, but back at Mists of Pandaria's press event, I had lunch with the dev who named all these items and appreciated the references being discovered.
We've copied the relevant sections of the poems below--mouseover the links to see the tribute item and click between the tabs to see all of the poems.
"Ode to a Nightingale," John Keats
MY heart aches, and a
drowsy numbness
pains
My sense
, as though of hemlock I had drunk,
Or
emptied some dull opiate to the drains
One minute past, and Lethe-wards had
sunk
:
'Tis not through
envy of thy happy lot
,
5
But being too happy in thine happiness,
That thou, light-wingèd
Dryad of the trees
,
In some
melodious plot
Of beechen green
, and
shadows numberless
,
Singest of summer
in full-throated ease.
10
O for a draught of vintage! that hath been
Cool'd a long age in the
deep-delvèd earth
,
Tasting of Flora and the country-green,
Dance, and Provençal song, and
sunburnt mirth
!
O for a beaker full of the warm South!
15
Full of the true
, the blushful
Hippocrene
,
With
beaded bubbles
winking at the brim,
And purple-stainèd mouth;
That I might drink, and leave the world unseen,
And with thee fade away into the
forest dim
:
20
Fade far away,
dissolve, and quite forget
What thou among the leaves hast never known,
The weariness, the fever, and the fret
Here, where men sit and hear each other groan;
Where palsy shakes a few, sad, last
grey hairs
,
25
Where youth grows pale, and spectre-thin, and dies;
Where but to think is to be full of sorrow
And
leaden-eyed despairs
;
Where beauty cannot keep her
lustrous eyes
,
Or new Love pine at them beyond to-morrow.
30
Away! away! for I will fly to thee,
Not charioted by Bacchus and his pards,
But on the
viewless wings
of Poesy,
Though the dull brain perplexes and retards:
Already with thee!
tender is the night,
35
And haply the Queen-Moon is on her throne,
Cluster'd around by all her starry Fays
But here there is no light,
Save what from
heaven is with the breezes blown
Through
verdurous glooms
and winding
mossy ways
.
40
I cannot see what flowers are at my feet,
Nor what
soft incense
hangs upon the boughs,
But, in
embalmèd darkness
, guess each sweet
Wherewith the seasonable month endows
The grass, the thicket, and the fruit-tree wild;
45
White hawthorn, and the pastoral eglantine;
Fast-fading violets
cover'd up in leaves;
And mid-May's eldest child,
The coming
musk-rose
, full of dewy wine,
The murmurous
haunt of flies
on summer eves.
50
Darkling
I listen; and, for many a time
I have been half in love with
easeful Death
,
Call'd him
soft names
in many a
musèd rhyme
,
To take into the air my
quiet breath
;
Now more than ever seems it rich to die,
55
To cease upon the
midnight with no pain
,
While thou art pouring forth thy soul abroad
In such an ecstasy!
Still wouldst thou sing, and I have ears in vain—
To thy
high requiem
become a sod.
60
Thou wast not born for death, immortal Bird!
No hungry generations tread thee down;
The voice I hear this
passing night
was heard
In ancient days by emperor and clown:
Perhaps the
self-same song that found a path
65
Through the sad heart of Ruth, when, sick for home,
She stood in tears amid the alien corn;
The same that ofttimes hath
Charm'd magic casements, opening
on the foam
Of perilous seas
, in
faery lands forlorn
.
70
Forlorn! the very word is like a bell
To toll me back from thee to my sole self!
Adieu! the fancy cannot cheat so well
As she is famed to do, deceiving elf.
Adieu! adieu! thy
plaintive anthem
fades
75
Past the
near meadows
, over the
still stream
,
Up the hill-side
; and now 'tis buried deep
In the next
valley-glades
:
Was it a vision, or a
waking dream
?
Fled is that music
:—do I wake or sleep?
80
"To Autumn," John Keats
SEASON of mists
and mellow fruitfulness,
Close bosom-friend of the maturing sun;
Conspiring with him how to load and bless
With
fruit the vines
that round the
thatch-eves run
;
To
bend with apples
the moss’d cottage-trees,
And fill all fruit with
ripeness to the core;
To swell the gourd, and plump the hazel shells
With a sweet kernel; to set budding more,
And still more, later
flowers for the bees
,
Until they think warm days will never cease,
For Summer has o’er-brimm’d their clammy cells.
Who hath not seen thee oft amid thy store?
Sometimes whoever seeks abroad may find
Thee sitting careless on a granary floor,
Thy hair soft-lifted by the
winnowing wind
;
Or on a
half-reap’d furrow
sound asleep,
Drows’d with the fume of poppies, while thy hook
Spares the next swath and all its
twined flowers
And sometimes like a
gleaner
thou dost keep
Steady thy laden head across a brook;
Or by a cyder-press, with patient look,
Thou watchest the last oozings hours by hours.
Where are the songs of Spring? Ay, where are they?
Think not of them, thou hast thy music too,—
While
barred clouds
bloom the soft-dying day
,
And touch the stubble plains with rosy hue;
Then in a wailful choir the small gnats mourn
Among the river sallows, borne aloft
Or sinking as the light wind lives or dies;
And full-grown lambs loud bleat from hilly bourn;
Hedge-crickets sing; and now with treble soft
The red-breast whistles from a garden-croft;
And gathering swallows twitter in the skies.
"To Sleep," John Keats
O SOFT embalmer of the still midnight!
Shutting with careful fingers and benign
Our
gloom-pleased eyes
, embower'd from the light,
Enshaded in forgetfulness divine;
O
soothest Sleep
! if so it please thee, close,
In midst of this thine hymn, my willing eyes,
Or wait the amen, ere thy poppy throws
Around my bed its
lulling charities
;
Then save me, or the passèd day will shine
Upon my pillow,
breeding many woes
;
Save me from
curious conscience
, that still lords
Its strength for darkness,
burrowing like a mole
;
Turn the key deftly in the oilèd wards,
And seal the hushèd
casket of my soul
.
"Bright Star," John Keats
Bright star, would I were stedfast as thou art—
Not in
lone splendour
hung aloft the night
And watching, with eternal lids apart,
Like nature’s patient, sleepless Eremite,
The
moving waters
at their priestlike task
Of pure ablution round earth’s human shores,
Or gazing on the
new soft-fallen mask
Of snow
upon the mountains and the moors—
No—yet still
stedfast
, still unchangeable,
Pillow’d upon my fair love’s ripening breast,
To feel for ever its soft fall and swell,
Awake for ever in a
sweet unrest
,
Still, still to hear her tender-taken breath,
And so live ever—or else swoon to death.
"The Waste Land," T. S. Eliot
Line 19:
What are the
roots that clutch
, what branches grow
Out of this stony rubbish? Son of man,
You cannot say, or guess, for you know only
A heap of
broken images
, where the sun beats,
And the dead tree gives no shelter, the cricket no relief,
And the
dry stone
no sound of water. Only
There is shadow under this
red rock
,
(Come in under the shadow of this red rock),
Line 90:
That freshened from the window, these ascended
In fattening the prolonged candle-flames,
Flung their smoke into the laquearia,
Stirring the pattern
on the coffered ceiling.
Line 100:
So rudely forced; yet there the nightingale
Filled all the desert with inviolable voice
And still she cried, and still the world pursues,“Jug Jug” to dirty ears.
And other
withered
stumps of time
Were told upon the walls;
Line 173:
The river's tent is broken: the last fingers of leaf
Clutch and sink into the wet bank. The wind
Crosses the
brown land
, unheard.
Line 183:
Sweet Thames, run softly till I end my song,
Sweet Thames, run softly, for I speak not loud or long.
But at my back in a cold blast I hear
The
rattle of the bones
, and
chuckle spread from ear to ear
.
Line 343:
There is not even solitude in the mountains
But red sullen
faces sneer and snarl
From doors of mud-cracked houses
Line 366:
What is that sound high in the air
Murmur of maternal
lamentation
Who are those hooded hordes swarming
Over
endless plains
, stumbling in cracked earth
Ringed by the flat horizon only
Line 385:
In this decayed hole among the mountains
In the faint moonlight, the
grass is singing
Over the tumbled graves, about the chapel
There is the empty chapel, only the
wind’s home
.
It has no windows, and the door swings,
Dry bones can harm no one.
Only a cock stood on the roof-tree
Co co rico co co rico
In a
flash of lightning
.
Line 413:
We think of the key, each in his prison
Thinking of the key, each confirms a prison
Only at nightfall,
aetherial rumours
Revive for a moment a broken Coriolanus
"The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock," T. S. Eliot
Line 4:
Let us go, through certain half-deserted streets,
The muttering retreats
5
Of
restless nights
in one-night cheap hotels
And sawdust restaurants with oyster-shells:
Streets that follow like a tedious argument
Of
insidious intent
Line 15:
The yellow fog that rubs its back upon the window-panes,
15
The
yellow smoke
that rubs its muzzle on the window-panes
Licked its tongue into the corners of the evening,
Lingered upon the pools that stand in drains,
Line 84 (this item also summons a ghost):
I have seen the moment of my greatness flicker,
And I have seen the
eternal Footman
hold my coat, and snicker,
85
And in short, I was afraid.
"The Daffodills," Wordsworth
The
waves beside them danced
, but they
Out-did the sparkling leaves in glee:
A Poet could not but be gay,
In such a jocund company:
I gazed—and gazed—but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought:
For oft, when on my couch I lie
In
vacant or in pensive mood
,
They flash upon that
inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils.
"The Lady of Shallot," Tennyson
Four grey walls, and
four grey towers
,
Overlook a space of flowers,
And the silent isle imbowers
The Lady of Shalott.
There she weaves by night and day
A
magic web
with colours gay.
She has heard a whisper say,
A curse is on her if she stay.
"Sonnet 73," Shakespeare
In me thou see'st the glowing of such fire
That on the
ashes of his youth
doth lie,
As the death-bed whereon it must expire
Consumed with that which it was nourish'd by.
"Ode to Psyche," Keats
Yes, I will be thy priest, and build a fane
In some untrodden region of my mind,
Where branchèd thoughts, new grown with
pleasant pain
,
Instead of pines shall murmur in the wind:
"Ode on Melancholy," Keats
Though seen of none save him whose strenuous tongue
Can burst Joy's grape against his palate fine;
His
soul shall taste the anguish
of her might,
And be among her cloudy trophies hung.
"By the Aurelian Wall: In Memory of John Keats," Bliss Carman
By the

Where the long shadows of the centuries fall
From Caius Cestius' tomb
A weary mortal seeking rest found room

Don't forget the battle pet, Tito. When he is active there will be a periodic mini tornado with a house in it that spawns around him.

Another Bible reference, I believe, are the three Security/Interface computers in the Tribunal of Ages event in the Halls of Stone. Kaddrak, Marnak, and Abedneum are references to Shadrach, Meshach, and Abendnego, three young Jews brought to Babylon by the conquering Babylonians as told in the book of Daniel.

This is a great list, but you missed one of my favourites. I guess this would be listed under Mythology: in the Highmaul raid area in draenor, there is a is a duo of Bosses who are huge cyclops (one-eyed ogrons in wow) named Pol and Phemos. This is in reference to Homer's "The Odyssey" where the hero Odysseus comes across a nasty Cyclops named Polyphemus - and Pol and Phemos is a reverse-portmanteau of his name :)

if im not much mistaken there are a few flaws in your references to Tolkien
is sting not named after the slughter of the orcs and/or goblins in the hobit and the majority of kills there goes to gandalf the gray tho i can be mistaken but im pretty sure there are not spiders involved in that part.
is the Morgul Blade not wieled by all 9 dead kings of man from ages ago(the once using the 9 rings of man)
the rings could they not also relate to the rings the dwarf(7 rings), elf(3 rings) or man(9 rings) got?

I think the
恐狼
is also a reference to A Song of Ice and Fire. The flavor text on the mounts list says: "Once thought to be extinct except in the far north. Highly sought for those preparing for winter."

It's rather long but human males have a /silly joke referring to the Tolkein's LotR trilogy:
"So, I have this idea for a great movie. It's about two gnomes who find a bracelet of power, and they have to take it to the Burning Steppes and cast it into the Cauldron. They form the Brotherhood of the Bracelet. Along the way they're trailed by a murloc named Gottom, who's obsessed with the bracelet, and nine bracelet bogeymen. It could be a three-parter, called 'Ruler of the Bracelet'. The first part would be called 'The Brotherhood of the Bracelet', followed by 'A Couple of Towers', with the climactic ending called 'Hey, the King's Back!'"

There is another Harry Potter reference you missed, though it is very recent. Beakbuck, he's in the broken isles somewhere. I forget exactly where. It's a reference to Hagrid's gryphon Buckbeak.

Regarding the Fresh Pound of Flesh, the OP says "which is what Shylock must promise Antonio." Actually, it is the other way around. Shylock requires no usury for his loan to "a friend," but "in a merry sport" exacts an "equal pound of your fair flesh, to be cut off and taken In what part of your body pleaseth me."
And Antonio agrees to this. o.O

The opening warfront quest line into Nazmir for the Alliance is basically Joseph Conrad's "The Heart of Darkness" (made into a movie "Apocalypse Now"). Sub Blood Trolls for savages and going up the river to meet (in WOW's case) Conrad while in the book and movie it's Kurtz (who's gone native) is also mirrored in the quest.

The Sha of Fear achievement "The Mind Killer" is a reference to Dune. The Bene Gesserit's Litany Against Fear.
I must not fear.
Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

Oof, you missed one of the biggest references, The Legend of Zelda. The quest in Un'Goro , not sure if its still there but in vanilla, was one of my fondests memories for quests. Then theres the reference of Silvermoon City, taken from one of R.A. Salvatores books of Silverymoon coven.

Another reference I appreciated a lot was
Ari
in the Mage Order Hall in Legion. She's a reference to
Auri
from Patrick Rothfuss'
Kingkiller Chronicle
series, and her quest
The Proper Way of Things
is a reference to the novella she narrates,
The Slow Regard of Silent Things
. At one point, she gives Kvothe, the protagonist a wooden ring, and a
wooden ring
is one of the quest rewards!
