A Newbies Guide to World of Warcraft
Please NOTE, This guide is constantly being worked on and additions will be added overtime. I just wanted to get this guide out there for people to read whilst adding content.
I also want to not that World of Warcraft is a 10 year old game and if you are searching for info/help online regarding World of Warcraft please check that dates/patch info, etc...
Introduction
Hello all, it's me Clozo. You might know me from my other guide(s) but if you don't well let me introduce myself. My name is Shon, my alias is Clozo. My wowhead username is wowlover123. I am writing this guide for new players getting into World of Warcraft. When I started playing World of Warcraft I learned a lot of things from players and it wasn't online or I never found it. So I am writing this guide so newbies can learn how to play World of Warcraft and they don't have to always be scouring the internet for how to do things in World of Warcraft.
Getting Started
To get started playing World of Warcraft you'll need to have the game. If you don't already have the game then you will need to buy the World of Warcraft Battle Chest. You can either buy it digitally online or you can go pick it up in stores. If you haven't tried out World of Warcraft yet, you can try World of Warcraft until you reach level 20.
1. To try out World of Warcraft until level 20 click
here.
2. To buy the World of Warcraft digital Battle Chest click
here.
If you have tried out World of Warcraft and you have decided you don't enjoy playing World of Warcraft, then you can stop reading this guide now. If you have purchased World of Warcraft or decided you want World of Warcraft then you can continue to the next step. Now we are going to download and install the Battle.net App. The Battle.net App is a client the launches all Blizzard games. Once you have downloaded the Battle.net App (link below) install it and then we can move onto the next step!
1. To download the Battle.net App click
here.
Installing World of Warcraft
Now that you have the Battle.net App launch the program. You'll see a login window come up. You'll want to put in your Battle.net username and password.
This is how the login window should look.
Once you are logged in to the Battle.net App you'll want to click on the World of Warcraft icon.
Once you have clicked on the World of Warcraft icon you will want to click on the blue "Install" icon.
The download could take quite a while so you can do something else while you wait. After it has finished downloading you'll want to follow the install wizard. While it is downloading you could make an addon link below for my guide.
Click
here
to go to my addon making guide.
Once the download has finished the Blue "Install" button will say "Play" on it. Now we are ready for the next step.
Picking a Realm
Now that you have finished downloading and installing World of Warcraft you'll want to launch it by clicking the big blue "Play" button. When you first get into the game you'll see a realm selection screen. Realms are servers in World of Warcraft. The realm selection screen should look something like the image below.
Types of Realms
There are many different types of realms that is why I have prepared a list of different realms.
Normal:
Normal realms are also known as PvE (Player-versus Environment) realms. If you're new to the game, strongly consider a Normal server before trying any other type.
PvP:
Player-versus-Player servers. In addition to all the standard aspects of the game, players from the opposite factions are free to attack each other in most areas. If you don't know what PvP is, don't choose it.
RP:
Roleplaying servers. Environments that encourage players to stay "in character" while playing the game. There are additional rules in place that govern player names, and behaviour in public areas. There aren't any mechanical processes that force you to role play your character well (or at all), bit it is encouraged in these realms.
RP-PVP:
These servers combine the RP crowd with a PvP ruleset.
Population
Along with knowing what type of realm your going to play on your also going to need to know what the player population is on a specific realm. That is why I have prepared a list of realm population codes.
Full:
New accounts are unable to create characters on Full servers.
High:
A large number of players. There's always someone around who might help, but you may be waiting in a queue to log in some nights.
Medium:
A robust player base not too crowded.
Low:
Sprase players base. You will always be able to do your task at-hand, but there may not be many people around to help you.
New Players:
Newer servers with a lower overall population. If you are trying out World of Warcraft for the first time, choose one of these realms!
Offline:
Grayed out servers are briefly unavailable, but will likely be online again soon
Please note that the realm types and the realm population list is taken out of the World of Warcraft Beginner's guide by Bradygames, you can find it on page 6-7.
The Factions
There are two factions in World of Warcraft, the Alliance and the Horde.
The Horde
The Horde has all the weirder types of races you could say. Their buildings are also more Viking styled and they are the mortal enemies of the Alliance.
The Alliance
The Alliance have the more civilized races. There buildings are medieval styled and the races are also more medieval styled. Whereas the Horde has more of Viking type races.
Creating your first Character!
Now that you have finally chosen your realm, you'll want to double click the name of the realm you have chosen, then you'll be taken to a character creation screen it should look something like the image below. In World of Warcraft we have a ton of races, classes. I'll explain all of that below so keep reading!
The Alliance Races
Draenei
Dwarf
Gnome
Human
Night Elf
Worgen
Please note that to play the Worgen race you need to own/purchase the Cataclysm expansion set.
The Horde Races
Blood Elf
Goblin
Orc
Tauren
Troll
Undead
Please note that to play the Goblin race you need to own/purchase the Cataclysm expansion set.
Neutral Races
Pandaren
Pandaren Alliance
Pandaren Horde
Please note that to play the Pandaren race you need to own/purchase the Mists of Pandaria expansion set.
Picking a Class
Now that you have picked a race, let's pick a class!
Death Knight
Druid
Hunter
Mage
Monk
Paladin
Priest
Rogue
Shaman
Warlock
Warrior
Please note that to play the Monk class you need to own/purchase the Mists of Pandaria expansion set.
Customizing your Character
Once you have finally decided on a race and a class, you can click next and begin to customize your character. For the character customization you can do whatever you want so I'm going to move ahead. The character customization screen should look something like the image below.
Moving your Character & Using the Skill Bar.
Currently working on this. Stay tuned for updates on this guide. If you have the "World of Warcraft Beginners Guide" by Bradygames you can read that guide instead of waiting for this one to come out, although the bradygames guide might not be as good.
Leveling your character to 90 or boosting to 90
Veterans Bonus
Chances are you have bought or are planning on buying Warlords of Draenor sometime in the future. With Warlords of Draenor you receive a level 90 boost! If you don't feel like leveling to level 90 than go for the boost but if you get your character to level 60 and then boost both of your characters professions will be boosted to max level as well so if you'd like to get a 40 level boost plus get both of your primary professions boosted to max level than level up till 60 but remember to select your professions before boosting or the game will auto select two for you!
Pros of boosting!
1. You get to jump into the end game content faster :) More raids! WOOOO.
2. If you don't have a lot of time to play as is then boosting will save you the time and effort of leveling.
3. You get item level 483 gear, 4
Embersilk Bag
and 150 gold!
Cons of boosting
1. You miss all the fun of leveling.

As a new computer game player, and a new WoW player, I would suggest the following:
First and foremost, in the introduction it would be very helpful to tell new players that WoW is a ten-year old game. When searching for information online, it is very important to check the date and patch number of the info. I spent a day once trying to incorporate some info from a forum until I realized it was dated 2007 and wasn't working because the game had changed since it was written.
If you can do it in a non-biased manner, there may be a place to generally itemize the pros and cons of leveling a toon from the beginning v.s. boosting to 90.
Realms: You may be interested in adding a link to
https://realmpop.com/
It gives various information on all the NA and EU realms: realm type, region, time zone, faction, gender, race, class. Read the front page carefully, this is not a perfect count but a representation.
Playing with friends: Suggest adding a reminder: You must be in the same faction if you want to talk to your friends while you play. If you want to be in the same Guild, or be able to trade items, or mail each other, you must be on the same realm.
This may also be a place to include an overview of adding friends, battle tag IDs and how to move a friend chat into its own window. I don't know if you want to get into the General, Trade and other chat windows, yet or not but they do appear as soon as you get in game so, I don't know. It may be too much info at this stage but maybe a link to further on in the guide when you get into it more. Also turning off/on Guild Invites and other things you may want to disappear from the chat windows 'til later.
Picking a class: Suggest adding a suggestion to choose a DPS spec for beginners. Leveling is easier and you can always dual spec later.
Customizing: Suggest adding a list of things that can be easily changed at the barbershop later. With a word that you will be changing your gear often as you level so not to be very concerned about what it looks like at the beginning.
For future additions: Navigation: an overview of the mini-map, its buttons , a notation about where North is with the mini-map stationary, or when you enable rotating. How to use the drop-downs on the World Map.
A question: I have wondered for the longest time if there is a list somewhere of the tips that appear on the loading screen. I can't seem to find one. I tried screenshotting them every day until I noticed that you can't take a screenshot of the loading screen!
This is a great beginning of a nice guide for players completely new to WoW and I appreciate having it as a reference for friends. If/when I remember other things I wish I knew when I started, I'll come back and comment some more. Thank you for creating this guide.

Hi, this is helpful for a complete newbie like me. But it doesn't address something that just happened to me, and I haven't found anywhere else to post this. I had just accomplished a quest and gotten to level 3 (yeah, I know, big deal, but I am a newbie!) and was reading the on-screen info about the reward I get for completing the quest, when all of a sudden the screen got this red halo, and next thing I know I was told my character was dead. No idea how or why that happened, or what happens next. Do I need to start all over with a new level 1 player? And does that mean I have to do all the quests again? How do I find out what killed me so it doesn't happen again?
