Beginner’s Guide to Blackfathom Deeps (a.k.a., “BFD”)
Introduction
You must be at least at Level 15 to enter this instance. To use the Dungeon Finder tool, you must be between levels 20-30.
Grab your quests at the instance entrance. There are plenty of level-appropriate elites to be killed and looted, and this is a great instance in which to learn more about how to play your role in a party.
Many magic-casting Naga will be encountered in this instance, so bring your interrupt spells and magic-blocking skills (such as Warrior’s
Shield Bash)
, your magic removal tools (for example, a Priest’s
Dispel Magic
can be used to remove buffs that these enemies cast upon themselves and their allies; the Priest’s
Purify
can remove debuffs placed by the enemy casters on party members; the Warlock can use either their Felhunter pet or their
Observer pet
– both of which have spell interrupt abilities.. Paladin interrupts include
Avenger's Shield
.)
Whether you are playing the role of
Tank
,
Healer
or
DPS
….understand what abilities your toon can bring to the encounters to help counter attacks from the enemies you’ll find here. Also, keep in mind that some crowd control abilities need to be of the variety that will be helpful to silencing casters (such as a mage’s
Polymorph
ability), but you may also need to cc some non-caster mobs.
Know your abilities
.
Also be sure to bring along some buff foods, potions or elixirs that enhance your ability to withstand magic attacks, increase your mana, stamina or armor. What level-appropriate scrolls might you obtain at the Auction House and bring along with you? What useful buffs can your class offer to party members? Cast these before each named encounter. What buffs does your toon like to receive from other classes? Research this information, and know when a player in your party can give your toon a helpful boost. Don't hesitate to ask for buffs before each of the named encounters.
In this dungeon, you will also encounter some invisible Satyr monsters. You won’t see these guys until after you have already aggroed them. Help your tank out by running toward them with your new friend instead of running in the opposite direction – this should help the tank more easily grab the Satyr’s attention so that you can return to your main job.
Keep snares, traps and melee target crowd control abilities at hand when you encounter murlocs. They run fast toward their friends after you’ve hurt them a lot.
You’ll encounter Twilight Cultists toward the end of the dungeon. They’ll often be grouped into twos or threes. Tanks should try to pull these mobs using ranged abilities and Line of Site tactics (like running around a corner after throwing an axe at the mob – targeting casters first). You should still plan to see some adds, so the party should be ready with some cc abilities (polymorph,
Sap
).
Ghamoo-ra
This turtle is found on a little island in the second cavern of this instance (Pool of As'kar). There are other turtles also on the island, but you do not have to engage them, unless you just like turtle meat or dislike turtles.
Hunters in your party may plead with your party to let them try to tame this beast. Unless you need the turtle for a quest or desire some of his loot (there is a
decent mail tanking chest piece
and a
decent cloth belt
– both with a 52% drop chance), this beast has no other strategic value that requires your party to kill him.
Ghamoo-ra has a huge amount of armor and could take a while to kill. What abilities does your class possess that allows you to weaken armor (for example, warrior’s “
Sunder Armor
”)? Do what you can to weaken this mob’s armor.
Spread out and move away from the turtle when it begins to “
trample
”.
Lady Sarevess
After killing Ghamoo-ra, swim off to the right in search of this “lady” (and…I use the term very loosely!).
She can run around in her cave some, drawing other mobs into battle with her, so your party may want to keep an eye out for patrolling enemies ("Pats") and determine whether to direct your attention to killing them before having the tank ask the "lady" for her attention.
She offers your tank an opportunity to practice turning a mob so that its back faces the rest of the party, because she casts a Forked Lightning spell that damages party members in a cone in front of her.
She can freeze her enemies in place with her Frost Nova, and she can also slow party members’ movement speed and attack speed.
Gelihast
A powerful melee enemy, so (as usual) casters should stand back away from this guy’s swords.
When he throws a net on your tank, your tank loses agro until the net goes away (2 seconds). This may be all the time he needs to kill a couple of cloth wearers in your group, so maybe this would be a great time to try out some crowd control abilities.
Attacking some of the lesser murlocs might cause them to go bring this guy to your party before you are ready for him, but it does not appear that he calls for the help of the other murlocs in the area; so you should pretty much be able to fight only him. Watch out, though, for the potent poison that the little murlocs can throw at your party members. If it’s not too much trouble, the healer might want to try to cure this from party members.
Once Gelihast is dead, run up to his altar and grab a buff called
Blessing of Blackfathom
. Some argue that this is actually considered a debuff –
whatever....
Just go get it!
Lorgus Jett
Unless you have a quest that requires you to kill this guy, there is really not much reason to bother – no notable loot, no witty quotes, no impressive visual effects or unique combat mechanics.
He is known to many as “Mr. Meh”; many others just don’t care what he is called, or may not even know that he exists.
Sure….we’re all here because we like killing bad guys, so maybe that’s a good enough reason to bother with him. He spawns randomly somewhere after the murloc encounter and before the encounter with the Twilight Cultists.
Baron Aquanis
This elemental is summoned by a horde-
only
quest and drops the needed quest item. Since my toon is Alliance, that’s all I need to know…..
Old Serra'kis

comments on Wowhead
about this guy. This mob has some desireable loot, but it seems that he'she is often overlooked by parties since he/she is not real easy to find - there are no quests leading to him, and killing him is not required for the achievement.
Swim to this mob by going beneath the left side of the ruins below Moonshrine Sanctum (where Kelris is located).
Key success considerations include:
• Pull this mob to a place where you can breath and fight at the same time so your party members don’t all drown to death during what could be a lengthy battle. If you have underwater breathing potions or can grant an underwater breathing buff to your party, fighting in the water could be an option, though.
• The mob hits hard and heals itself. Aren’t you glad that you grabbed the Blessing of Blackfathom buff/debuff? Eat and drink to get your mana and health up before this fight – you’re gonna need it.
• Your healer is gonna be busy, so feel free to help by using some self-heal potions and abilities.
Twilight Lord Kelris
Clear the other enemies in the room before engaging Twilight Lord Kelris. Your healer may be dispelling or interrupting the mind control spell that is cast by these mobs.
The Twilight Lord is in a trance and shouldn’t attack you before your party attacks him – so be careful about using AOE attacks on the other mobs in the room that might inadvertently hit Kelris and irritate him before your party is ready for him.
Once he is dead, you need to click each of the four candles (ONE AT A TIME) that are on his altar.
Each candle click causes a strong mob to spawn, so kill the mob before summoning another by clicking on the next candle.
Once you have killed all of the mobs spawned by clicking each of the candles, you will gain access to the room containing the final boss, Aku'mai, who must be killed for the achievement.
Aku'mai (The main event!)
Killing this guy = You get the Achievement!
• You will find several elite hostile turtles in the room with Aku’mai. These should be pulled and fought/cleared before engaging Aku’mai.
• The mob hits hard ! Eat and drink to get your mana and health up before this fight – you’re gonna need it.
• Your healer is gonna be busy and will need to focus on keeping the tank healthy, so feel free to help by using some self-heal potions and abilities.
• Tank must keep the agro all to themselves. If this mob gets away from you and goes for toons that are not built to soak up damage, those toons will soon be doing the corpse run – make sure that your healer is not one of these unfortunates, or you will be doing the corpse run yourself very soon.
• Everyone else in the party needs to throw everything they can at the boss, but they must ensure that they are also allowing the tank to keep agro. If you take agro from the tank, run toward the tank and allow them to take it back from you. Also, be prepared for the corpse run, since the healer is conserving resources to make sure that the tank stays healthy (and you are NOT the tank…..)
Grats!

Great guide. However, I recommend linking the spells the bosses cast, displaying some notable loot, going over notable things about other mobs in the instance, other notable random things, and related quests/quest targets. Be thorough and simple. Good job though.
