Hunter Pets
Since the introduction of Cataclysm it has not been such a necessity to feed your pet. Now the pets' diet is no longer the determining line of what makes a good pet. Previously (3.3 and before)the Hunter would have to periodicity feed the pet to maintain its "happiness", making pets with a greater variety in their diet more desired than picky eaters. While the spell
Feed Pet
still exists it is now almost a useless ability.
With Mists of Pandaria the pets' class is now able to be changed. When tamed the pet has the default class of that kind of pet
Ferocity
,
Tenacity
, or
Cunning
. The pets' class can now easily be changed by going to your talents (default "N" key), select the "Pet" tab then select the class you want and hit learn.
Your Pet can be dual speced so it automatically switches spec when you do. However I had experienced some issues with the pets' action bar "dropping" spells when I did this so I just keep him on the same spec. Once I find a spec that works for my pet I don't really mess with it so the issue may have been fixed by now, I'm not sure.
Pet Classes
Below is a listing of the abilities the pet will receive from each class as well as the default abilities for hunter pets
These are commands and perks your pet has regardless of its spec
Your pets' basic attack is either
Bite
,
Claw
, or
Smack
depending of what pet you have; by defult it is rigged to be an auto cast. It is your pets' basic hard hit, while the effectiveness of the basic attack can be argued I do not recommend taking it off the auto cast especially if you are a Beast Master Hunter. It has a chance on hit to activate
Frenzy
that the hunter can consume to trigger
Focus Fire
.
Growl
is your pets' main threat generating spell. It is an auto cast and is best suited for soloing to keep the beastie mad at your pet and not you. When entering a group it is wise to just take it off of the auto cast, it is rare that the group will actually want the pet to use this. If you have a good enough tank it wont matter as much but it is still not smart, as it has potential of making the monster ignore the tank and come after the pet instead.
Cower
is an auto cast spell that helps the survive-ability of your pet. the movement reduction of this spell shouldn't matter that much as by the time your pet uses it he most likely is already by the monster and won't need to go chasing after it. If the movement reduction really bothers you then you can just spec for
BlinkStrike
Cower has a fairly long cooldown of 45sec and only lasts for 6sec; but most times it is enough to get you and your pet out of a tight spot.
Combat Experience
is a passive ability that is used by all pet classes, it increases all damage the pet deals by 50%
Avoidance
a passive ability that greatly reduces the damage your pet takes from area of effect attacks. It allows your pet to
stand in the fire
without getting singed.
Attack:
commands your pet to attack the current target. Although it is not used as much since the introduction of the "Assist" command. It is still useful if you want to send you pet in first before you attack; doing this can give you pet a slight bonus to its threat being the monster saw him before it saw the hunter.
Follow:
by default this is selected it causes your pet to follow along side of the hunter
Move To:
commands your pet to move to the target location and stay there
Stay:
"Move To" has replaced this spells' location on the action bar, but the spell is still tucked away in the pets' spell book. This spell commands your pet to stay at its' current location
Assist:
this spell has replaced the old "aggressive" spell. Assist causes your pet to attack the same target the hunter is attacking
Defensive:
the pet waits quietly at its masters side until either the pet or the master takes damage, then the pet joins in the fight. While "Assist" is more widely used "Defensive" is good for drawing out a monster from a group so your pet doesn't just run in there
Passive:
your pet will stay at your side and not fight unless given the order to do so
Designed for dishing out damage
Heart of the Phoenix
An instant cast ability to restore your pet to life with most/full health. Great for giving your pet a second chance while in combat. 8min cooldown 10min lockout before it can be used again
Rabid
An auto cast ability that increases pets' attack speed by 70% for 20sec 2min cooldown
Spiked Collar
A passive ability that increases pets' damage by 10%, increases pets' haste by 10%, and increases pets' crit chance by 10%
Dash
An auto cast ability that increases your pets movement speed by 80% for 16sec and has a 32sec cooldown, costs 30 of your pets' focus (this ability is also used in the Cunning class)
Designed for dealing damage, also has some useful abilities to resist damage
Cornered
A passive ability that causes your pet to be less likely to be critically hit and deal more damage while below 35% health
Roar of Sacrifice
An auto cast ability that makes a friendly target immune to critical strikes but deals some damage to the pet, lasts for 12sec has a 1min cooldown
Bullheaded
An auto cast ability that is great for breaking your pet free of crowd control effects, also reduces all damage done to your pet by 20% for 12 sec this spell has a 3min cooldown
Dash
An auto cast ability that increases your pets movement speed by 80% for 16sec and has a 32sec cooldown, costs 30 of your pets' focus (this ability is also used in the Ferocity class)
Boar's Speed
A passive ability that increases your pet's movement speed by 30%

Charge
An auto cast ability, your pet charges the opponent immobilizing them for a short time and giving the pet a bonus on their next attack
Thunderstomp
An auto cast ability that caused your pet to deal damage to nearby enemies and causes a fair amount of threat costs 20 of your pets' focus 10sec cooldown (note: this is a area of effect ability, it may anger nearby beasties that otherwise wouldn't have wanted to kill you)
Great Stamina
A passive ability that increases your pets' stamina by 12%
Blood of the Rhino
A passive ability that reduces the pets' chance to be critically hit by 6%, increases pets' armor by 20%, and increases healing the pet receives by 40%

Do note that those marked as "exotic" require the
Beast Master
spec to tame/control, although if you change specs you will not loose the pet but you will be unable to summon him, or tame other exotics.

Nice concise pet guide.
When I started to level my hunter (patch 5.1), I was trying to find what use 'Feed Pet' was these days - so well done for including that in your first paragraph for us new Hunters.
One suggestion to include in the Hunter pet abilities - 'Pets with buffs' tab - try to include somewhere what class/spell abilities don't stack/are the same as them - as you've stated at the top of the section - Mark of the Wild same buff as Embrace of the Shale Spider. Maybe replace the notes column with 'Same ability as' - or something like that?
Well done on the guide.

A pretty good guide, although I do have some suggestions-
Add what level range you have to be to tame the Exotic pets, such as the Spirit Beasts- 74-90.
I agree with jemaris- state what they are the same as. Like, Eternal Guardian is the same as a druid's Rebirth.
Maybe give a list or a link to a site that states all of the hunter pets, such as
Petopia
.
Fix the typos. There aren't many, but there are a couple. (Duriation-duration, miscalanious- miscellaneous, etc.)
Otherwise, an excellent guide! Worthy of a shortcut on my desktop. :) Well done.

Does the serpent still add haste? Because the
Serpents Cunning
adds to Spell Power?
