Breeds may not seem that important to a casual pet collector but it's something you need to consider for the highest success rate. They will often play a key role in power-levelling teams or tougher tamer battles.
The Basics
Battle pets are made up of the following primary stats:
H = Health
P = Power
S = Speed
They increase with each level and are determined by three factors:
Base Stats
Rarity
Breed
Base Stats
These can vary from pet to pet with some having more Speed or Power than others so if you're looking to maximise a certain stat (H/H, P/P, S/S), this should be the decider.
To determine what stat you should focus on, it really depends on the role it plays in your team.
Turtles tend to have more Health fulfilling more of a tank role, while my
Mongoose
(S/S) is extra fast so if you want a pet to hit hard, look for high Power (P/P) but if you want to make sure it gets that first hit in or defensive ability, go for Speed (S/S). Combinations like H/P can also work well if you'd like your pet to last a while.
Rarity
A higher quality pet will receive a larger allocation of stats each time it levels so think of a poor quality pet as the baseline, and rarity as the multiplier:
Poor pets will have all stats multiplied by 1
Common pets will have all stats multiplied by 1.1
Uncommon pets will have all stats multiplied by 1.2
Rare pets will have all stats multiplied by 1.3
It does not matter if you upgrade a pet at level 1 or 25, it will still end up with the same stats at max level.
Breed
Each breed is made up of three numbers which make up the Health, Power and Speed values respectively.
Letter System
The image on the right displays a Flayer Youngling with the P/B breed meaning its Health at level 25 will be 1465, with 289 Power and a Speed of 273 when upgraded to a rare. B refers to Balance meaning the stat weights are split between the three for B/B (but in this case two as a P/B breed).
Number system
A breed of 3/13 will gain 0.5 to all stats each time it levels (in addition to the values from Base Stats and Rarity). As such, each breed is made up of these two numbers - 3 and 13 where 3 refers to a male pet and 13 a female pet. As a rule, any breed between 3-12 is male, while 13-22 are female. Although there is currently no significance to whether a pet is fe/male, this may change in the future if a breeding program is introduced.
The following table displays the list of BreedIDs and their corresponding values.

A pet with H/H refers to a double dose of Health or 2/0/0 but if you see H/B, that's Health mixed with Balance or .9/.4/.4. There's also B/B for double Balance or .5/.5/.5. as well as P/S for Power mixed with Speed or 0/.9/.9.
The more specialised a breed, the more points it will get overall so the ultra-specialised 4/14, 5/15, and 6/16 breeds get a full 2 points per level, while the ultra-balanced 3/13 breed gets only 1.5 points total making it the weakest in stat allocation.
Don't feel stressed about remembering any formulas though, the letter system supplied by the breed addon below helps you capture all your desired breeds in the wild.
Things to Note
Pets don't always have multiple breeds. A lot of
quest reward
,
classic raid drops
and certain wild pets have only one.
Vendor bought pets like the Dragonhawk Hatchlings have multiple BreedIDs so you may need to buy a few to get the Breed you want.
Don't be afraid to capture a poor-quality pet if it's the breed you're after - you can always upgrade it later. This is especially true for a low spawn pet like the Stormstruck Beaver, although in this case, you should capture one and call it a great day!
Flawless Battle-Stones
have a chance to be collected from successful wild battles and a number of reward bags.
Marked Flawless Battle-Stones
are available from Varzok in Orgrimmar (52.5, 59.3) or Audrey Burnhep in Stormwind (69.4, 25.1) once you trade in 3x family-specific Flawless Battle-Stones. They can also be purchased from your Battle Pet Master (Serr'ah or Lio) who is located in your garrison's pet menagerie or Breanni's shop in New Dalaran.

Nice guide. From a perspective of haven not gone hardcore yet into pet collecting, after reading this guide 'm left wondering what optimal breeds I should be looking for. I have not a clue and don't know how to apply this knowledge you've bestowed upon me. IMO if you had a tabbed section (actually this probably could be another guide that you could reference from here) to supplement this, the understanding of Breeds would be complete.

Would anyone happen to know how to send a captured pet to someone through the mail?

With regards to rarity of Pets you say - "A higher quality pet will result in a larger allocation of stat points received each time it levels"
Does this mean that if you upgrade a pet (with the same breed) at different levels they will end up having different stats when they both reach Lvl25 ?

Good article, I learned a few things. Just one comment:
For somebody that doesn't know the information in the
Letter System
section, much of this article would be easier to understand if that section were just made a sub-heading in
The Basics
... Maybe between between
Base Stats
and
Rarity
?

I'm more confused after reading this than I was to begin with. For the pet novice this is just confusing and doesn't really explain what you are looking for in a pet. After reading this I've decided to give up trying to understand the H/P, S/S, H/B etc. I just don't get it and unfortunately I didn't find any easy answers here :(

I do not understand the co-relation between the figures shown for Health, Power and Speed, and the Breed ID of SS BB PB etc. is there an easy way of looking, for example at a lvl 1 pet with health at 152, power at 11 and speed at 9 and determining what the two letter ID is?

I know this is an old guide albeit it still has its uses. However, I actually downloaded the Pet battle Breed ID add-on earlier. For something that wasn't showing up, my FPS was sure jumping around in zones devoid of players. As I went to uninstall it, I belatedly remembered seeing an article stating that Curse Forge suddenly won't be supported. And I think it was around the time DF was announced so, I wouldn't be surprised if nothing works on November 28th.
