Warcraft Logs is a very powerful tool for analyzing all sorts of things related to raids and combat in World of Warcraft. With a tool that can do so much, it can be intimidating for a new user. This article will teach you how to use Warcraft Logs for some basic functions and get you more familiar with the website. First, you will learn how to select different combat segments to look at specific parts of a raid. Then, you will learn how to find out detailed information about what happened in that combat segment. To finish up this article, you will learn about all the useful information provided on a individual character's profile page and how to look up rankings for damage and healing output to see how you compare to the best of the best!
The Main Raid Page in Warcraft Logs for Burning Crusade Classic
When you see a link to Warcraft Logs, it is usually a link to a specific raid page. This is your home base for finding out more details about what happened in that raid. The top of the page looks like this:
There are a lot of options already, but don't worry! You will be guided through just one step at a time. First you will learn how to select specific combat segments. This lets you narrow down the data displayed from the entire raid to just bosses, just trash, a specific boss, or even a specific attempt at a specific boss! You can click on the area marked #1 to select different combat segments.
Selecting Combat Segments in Warcraft Logs for Burning Crusade Classic
When you click on the area marked #1 in the image above, it will bring you to a screen that looks like this:
This is the encounters page. At the top is "Encounters and Trash" which includes everything. Next is "Encounters" which only counts bosses and filters out all the trash fights. Then there are the specific bosses, and far at the bottom of the page you can select "Trash" and look at only trash fights.
Suppose you wanted to look specifically at Heigan the Unclean. You can click #1 to view all Heigan attempts together, or you can click #2 to see a list of all the different Heigan attempts. After clicking #2 you can click #3 to look at the kill attempt, or #4 to look at the wipe attempt.
Detailed Information in Warcraft Logs for Burning Crusade Classic
Now that you know how to select different combat segments, how can you find out information about what happened? You can select different tabs near the top of the page to look at more detailed breakdowns for different types of information. Some common useful tabs are Summary, Damage Done, Healing, Buffs, Debuffs, and Deaths.
Summary
This is the Summary tab, and it can be used to see what equipment a player was using during a raid, as well as get a general overview of their combat performance.
This is where you select the Summary tab.
This is where you select the individual player you want to look at. By default this will say "All Friendlies" and not provide any specific gear information.
This is where you can see each item the person was using. In this image it shows two helmets, which means Warcraft Logs detected two different helmets used by this player at different times during the selected combat segment. If you click on any of the item names, it links you to the item page here on Wowhead and you can find out where to get that item!
If you scroll down past the gear, the Summary tab gives a general display of damage done, healing done, damage taken, and deaths for that player during the raid. You can click on any of those to navigate to more detailed information.
Damage Done
The Damage Done tab has a lot going on. For this image you are looking at a successful attempt at
萨菲隆
in
Naxxramas
. In the middle there is a damage over time graph that you can see fluctuates up and down. This is expected because the raid deals less damage to
萨菲隆
during air phases.
This is where you can select the Damage Done tab.
This is the Parse % column - it tells you how well this player performed on this boss compared to all other players on Warcraft Logs of the same class and spec for that boss. A higher number means better performance.
This is the raw damage output of each player, color coded by class.
This is the % active time for each player - how much time they spent dealing damage compared to being idle.
By clicking the title of each column, you can sort the results by that column. The default sort is by the raw damage amount column.
When analyzing damage dealers, active time is one metric you can use that helps to split away gear, consume, or buff usage differences between the players. You don't need good gear to have good uptime. Especially during trash mobs, some players will have much more active time than others. This generally means they are paying attention and staying focused. More active time typically means more damage!
Healing
The Healing tab is pretty similar to the Damage Done tab in layout.
This is where you select the Healing Done tab.
The Parse % column tells you how much raw healing output this person did compared to all other people of the same spec and class on Warcraft Logs for the particular boss you selected.
This column shows the raw amount of healing output each player did.
This column shows the percentage of a player's healing output that was wasted "overhealing." Overhealing occurs when a large heal lands, and would heal a person beyond their maximum health. A heal for 4,000 on a player who only has 1,000 health missing will overheal for 3,000, which would be 75% of the heal.
Healing output and performance is not as easily measurable as damage output. High raw healing numbers does not necessarily equate to a good healer. You need to take a more careful approach when analyzing healer performance. A healers' responsibilities can range from tank healing, dispelling, raid healing, or even damage dealing when healing requirements are light!
A healer assigned to tank healing will naturally have lower raw healing output than one assigned to raid healing, but if the tank didn't die, the tank healer did their job perfectly!
Buffs
The default buff page is not terribly useful. It will show you the total number of applications of various buffs across the entire raid. To get better information from the Buffs tab, you need to filter the results a little.
This is where you can select the buffs tab.
Clicking here allows you to select an individual player and see all the buffs they gained and when.
Clicking here allows you to select a specific ability or buff, and see all the times different players gained that specific buff.
You can do similar filtering on the other pages like Damage Done and Healing to get breakdowns by player or by ability!
In this picture
防护冰霜
is selected as the buff you want to know more about. This is the buff from using
强效冰霜防护药水
, a commonly used consumable for
萨菲隆
. Now the display is telling you some useful information!
This is where you select the specific buff that you want to know about.
The Count column tells you the total number of times each player gained this buff
The Uptime column gives you a display of when a player had the buff active throughout the fight.
Debuffs
The debuffs tab is right next to the buffs tab. Overall, the debuff and buff tabs operate in a pretty similar way.
This is where you can select the Debuffs tab.
Here you can select to look at either debuffs on enemies, or debuffs on "friendlies" (your raiders).
Here you can see the uptime of various debuffs on the enemies or allies. Some debuffs are applied nearly the entire time, whereas others drop off occasionally. This is indicated by the colored bar in the Uptime column.
Some debuffs are ones you want to be sure to have active a lot, whereas others don't matter so much. The debuff tab can tell you if important debuffs are applied consistently and in this case, they definitely are! Remember to always consider context when analyzing logs - some important debuffs drop for a little bit in this picutre, but it is during
萨菲隆
's air phases when it doesn't matter.
Deaths
The Deaths tab can tell you how, when, and how many players died during an encounter.
This is where you select the Deaths tab.
The Time column tells you how far into the encounter that a player died - was it right away, or after a few minutes? If you see a clump of many deaths close together in time, it could be that they all died to a similar cause.
The Name column gives the name of the player who died. If you click on their name, it will give a more detailed breakdown for that specific player.
The Killing Blow column tells you what exact ability dealt the final bit of damage to kill the player.
The Over column tells you how much time elapsed from the last time the player was at full health to the time they died. Often on
萨菲隆
it is a long and slow death, but in other situations a player can go from full health to nothing in just a second!
Here is what it looks like if you click on a individual player's name:
This is the death details page for a specific player, and you can use this page to find out more detail about what caused this player to die. The whole table gives a breakdown of each damage or healing event leading up to the death.
This tells you the name of the player and time of their death. If a player was resurrected mid-fight, it would be possible for them to have multiple deaths in the same fight! You can select which player and which death by clicking here.
The Time column tells you when an event occurred relative to the player's death. A negative time means the event occurred that many seconds prior to death.
The Ability column tells you what ability caused the damage or healing event.
The Event colmun gives specific information about the event. Who cast the ability, the name of the ability, the target of the ability, and the actual damage or healing of the ability after absorbs or resistances.
Deaths in a raid can be something that stirs up argument between players, so when discussing deaths you should be careful and considerate of your teammates.
If you are investigating your own death, it is easy to say "
the tank should have taunted,
" or "
the healers could have healed me more
." While those things may be true, they are not useful. You should read the log and ask yourself, "
what could I have done to prevent my own death?"
Figuring out how you can improve your own play helps you be a better player, whereas criticizing others often just causes bad feelings.
Character Profile Page in Warcraft Logs for Burning Crusade Classic
Warcraft Logs also offers profile pages for individual characters to give an overview of that player's performance. The home page for Warcraft Logs has a search bar at the top which lets you search for individual characters, guilds, or realms. You can type in a character's name and select the correct realm if there are multiple people with that name.
There is a lot of information on the character profile page.
This is the search box where you can search for specific characters, guilds, or realms.
Here you can select which raid you want the page to display information about.
Here you can select what type of rankings you want to know about - damage, damage to bosses, healing, or healing to tanks.
Here you can select which specific boss you want to show data for, or even show complete raids including trash mobs.
This shows you the combined average of each of this player's
best
performance on each boss.
This shows you the combined average performance of this player considering all attempts on all bosses.
This shows the worldwide ranking for performance for the player's best performance on each boss for their class and spec. A 29 Thaddius means out of all logs submitted on Warcraft Logs, only 28 other combat rogues did more damage on Thaddius than this player's best performance.
If you click on any individual boss name, it will take you to a page that shows all the different boss kills for that boss that the player has recorded on Warcraft Logs. You can use this to navigate to individual raid pages to learn more.
If you click on any of the DPS numbers here, each one will take you to the main raid report page for the raid where that boss kill took place. Then you can use all you learned in this article to find out about what happened in that raid!
Best performance is usually where people try to get a row of 99 parses, which can be very fun! When trying to judge a player's performance I usually look at median performance - this tells me how well do they
usually
do, rather than cherry picking their best performances. The raid group a player is in has a big influence on how well they can parse, so a good player could be stuck in a poor performance raid group and thus have poor parses.
Rankings in Warcraft Logs for Burning Crusade Classic
Rankings let you compare performance to other players, either world wide or as specific as just your server. To navigate to the rankings page, go to the Warcraft Logs home page and scroll down to the particular raid you are interested in. To the right there is a small icon and/or text that says "Rankings", click it!
This brings you to the rankings page for Naxxramas. There are a lot of important options here that allow you to sort and filter the results to see exactly what you want.
Damage
- This drop down allows you to select what kind of ranking you are looking at.
Progress - Who cleared it first?
Speed - Who cleared it fastest?
Execution - Who cleared it with the fewest deaths?
Damage - Who did the most damage while clearing the raid?
Healing - Who did the most healing while clearing the raid?
Damage To Bosses - Who did the most damage to
bosses only, not trash
while clearing the raid?
Healing To Tanks - Who did the most healing
specifically to tanks
while clearing the raid?
Complete Raids
- This allows you to select a specific boss or the complete raid.
All Regions
- This allows you to select specific regions like US, Europe, or Asia among others. Then only players and reports from that region will be displayed.
All Classes
- This allows you to select specific classes and specific roles. For Paladins you can select Healer, Tank, or DPS within the Paladin class. With a particular class and role selection, only players of that class and role will be displayed.
All Factions
- This lets you filter by faction - Alliance only, Horde only, or both.
All Item Levels
- This allows you to filter by item level so you can see how you compare to people with similar item level gear as you.
P6
- This allows you select a specific phase. Of course Naxxramas only exists in Phase 6, but if you were looking at Molten Core you might want to look at only Phase 1 logs when Molten Core was current content.
Without World Buff Restrictions
- This allows you to filter out logs where players left the raid to reacquire world buffs before completing it. "With Restrictions" means players
are not
allowed to reacquire buffs, and "Without" means they
are
allowed to leave the raid to reacquire world buffs.
Sort by Boss Fight DPS
- This row only shows up when you have "Complete Raid" selected and allows you to sort by either Boss DPS or Boss and Trash DPS.
If you click on any individual player's name on this page, it takes you to the main raid page in which that parse occurred.
What about realm rankings? None of these options let you select a specific realm! To find rankings for a specific realm, you need to start by using the search bar at the top and type in the realm name. Pick your realm, then you will have a page similar to the home page where you can select a raid, click the Rankings icon, and arrive at a page just like the one above but specific to your realm.
First search the realm name,
Then select the "Rankings" icon for the raid you are interested in,
Then filter the results to the information you are interested in (
obviously the settings that make you look the best
)!
Four main factors go in to whether a player parses well, or achieves a high ranking:
Individual execution
Equipment and buffs
Boss kill and raid clear times
Luck
Only two of these things are in the control of the individual. Two equally skilled players with identical gear and buffs can have drastically different parses based on the raid group they are in. An individual can have drastic differences week to week just from parts of the game that are purely random. A little bit of luck and a few extra crits that are out of your control turn a 98 into a 99 parse!
That concludes this introduction to Warcraft Logs. Warcraft Logs is a very powerful tool for analyzing raids, and there is so much more you can do with it that wasn't covered in this article. This is just a article after all, not a whole book! Now you should know how to select specific combat segments, learn about many different details, and look up sweet sweet rankings!
