Huntin' down Rare mounts. A Hunter Solo guide for Hard-To-Get rare mounts.
Hello! This guide is going to cover 6 rare mounts in game that are found inside of dungeons and require no rep grinds, or dailies to do I feel like there are other guides that cover these already, but would be happy to add them in if requested. Some are easy, and I'll be covering them for people who haven't done the dungeons yet, the others are harder, and require strategy and patience. They are:
Reins of the Blue Proto-Drake.
Drops from
Skadi the Ruthless
found in
Utgarde Pinnacle
and is the 3rd boss. 1.3% drop rate(or 1098 out of 82744 drops
from people using the Wowhead Client*
but it's pretty accurate. Can only be attempted once a day.
Reins of the Bronze Drake
Guaranteed drop from
Infinite Corruptor
which is the optional boss in
The Culling of Stratholme
, but requires you to complete a "speed run" which means you have to kill the boss in 25 minutes, which is pretty easy. Can only be completed once a day.
Ashes of Al'ar
Drops from
Kael'thas Sunstrider
in
The Eye
. 1.9% (or 326 out of 17477 drops
from people using the Wowhead Client*
but once again, pretty accurate. Can only be attempted once a week.
Reins of the Vitreous Stone Drake
drops from
Slabhide
and is the second boss in
The Stonecore
. 0.8% drop rate (or 1382 out of 164205 drops
from people using the Wowhead Client*)
. Can be attempted multiple times a day.
Reins of the Drake of the North Wind
drops from
Altairus
and is the second boss in
The Vortex Pinnacle
. 0.8% drop rate (or 1432 drops out of 168990
from people using the Wowhead Client*)
. Can be attempted multiple times a day.
Fiery Warhorse's Reins
drops from
Attumen the Huntsman
and is the first boss in
Karazhan
. 1% drop rate (or 736 drops out of 75303
from people using the Wowhead Client*)
. Can be attempted once a week.
*=The Wowhead Client is an addon for the World of Warcraft that collects data such as drops etc. and sends it to Wowhead. It's what makes the drop rates and other things more accurate. If your interested in using it, you can find more about it and download it
here
.
Prerequisites.
525
First Aid
is a very big help. Stockpile
Dense Embersilk Bandage
.
Talent Spec =
Beast Mastery
. A few points you can move around are the 3 in
Beastial Discipline
.
Pets. Turtles, Beetles, or Shale Spiders are pretty good tanking pets. Turtles and Beetles have a very good
tanking
CDs
. Shale Spiders have very nice
buff
. Talent specs for
Beetle
Turtles
and
Shale Spider
. But, you can swap points around here to help out your play style.
Mounts and Strats
Found in
Utgarde Pinnacle
and drops only in Heroic Mode. Skadi the Ruthless is a pretty straight forward fight. When you start the fight, he flies off and a gauntlet starts. You kill trash to the end of the platform, and focus on
Ymirjar Harpooners
since when you kill them, Harpoons on the group appear, and you have to shoot them out of the cannons when Skadi is close (this will be indicated by text popping up in the middle of your screen.) Skadi does a
Whirlwind
that you need to stay out of. Besides that, it's a really easy fight.
Found in
The Culling of Stratholme
. The Infinite Corruptor only appears in Heroic mode. You have 25 minutes to get to him, which is pretty easy. The hardest part is the gauntlet. Your required to guide Arthas to Mal'ganis, by killing
alot
of zombies. You can easily get overwhelmed, but you can let your pet take care of the most part if you let it grab aggro, and set it to passive. Just remeber to keep Mend Pet up on your pet at all times. The boss fight itself is just a tank-n-spank.
This is found in
The Eye
and since this is a raid instance, you are going to need 1 other person to get in. You can invite a friends alt, have them DC, then go in and solo.
Now this is where things start to get tricky. Kael'thas isn't just going to hand over his loot, so I'm going to break his fight down into 4 phases.
In the first part of the fight, your going to be fighting 4 of his generals, lieutenants, not sure what he calls them. They are pretty easy and you fight them one on one. Thaladred focuses on 1 person, and slowly follows them. Just burn him down. Lord Sanguinar has a 35 yard AoE fear. Grand Astronomer Capernian (or just Copernicus as our guild called her) has an AoE knockback/slow if someone is in melee range, a conflag, and fireball. Burning her down is easy. Master Engineer Telonicus has an ability that lasts for 1 min. and stuns "periodically" for 5 seconds.
In the second phase, you fight Kael'thas' legendary weapons, and can even loot them! Be warned, they only last for the time you remain in Tempest Keep, and reset if you wipe. The weapons are an AoE trash pack, they don't hit particularly hard, and are easy to kill.
In the 3rd phase, you fight all of Kael'thas' generals again, at the same time. You need to come up with a kill order, and focus them down. I do Telonicus, Capernian, Sanguinar, then Thaladred, but you can do Capernian first, I personally hate the periodic stun, and if you keep him alive, you can get the debuff twice, which will let it last until you fight Kael'thas.
In the last phase, you fight Kael'thas. This is pretty tricky, since he has a Mind Control, and can wipe you with it. The way to do this is to get out of his Line of Sight by standing behind a pillar, and stepping out to kill the Phoenix egg and putting Mend Pet up on your pet. ALWAYS keep Mend Pet up. After awhile, he will stop, become untargetable, and fly in the air. After a minute, he starts casting again, and gives you a stacking debuff that reduces your HP. Save CD's for this part of the fight and blow them to make sure you don't die.
This is found in
The Stonecore
. This drops off the 2cd boss
Slabhide
. You have to kill the first few trash packs, but can skip the first boss and the rest of the trash packs using
Camo
and being sneaky. The boss itself is pretty easy, as long as you have decent (378 items mostly) gear and keep Mend Pet up on your pet. He has a few abilities you need to watch out for.
Stalactite
: Slabhide causes stalactites to fall from the ceiling, damaging you, and preventing Line of Sight.
Lava Fissure: Slabhide causes a spot on the ground to erupt with lava. Avoid these.
Besides that, it's pretty much a tank and spank. He hits your pet hard, but if you keep Mend Pet up and use a bandage every now and then, you should be fine.
This mount drops in
The Vortex Pinnacle
. You have to fight the first boss to progress, but can skip the trash. The first boss is easy, just takes awhile since he has ALOT of health. Just stay inside his tornado circle until he pulls it in. Tank and spank.
Altairus
on the other hand, is one tough guy. He has a
casted ability
which hits like a truck. Band-aids are required. Mend Pet up is required. Other then that, try to stay Upwind as much as possible, and good luck. I personally downed Kael'thas easier then this guy.
This drops off
Attumen the Huntsman
in
Karazhan
. The fight is pretty straight forward, tank and spank for the most part. When Midnight is at 95%, the Huntsman comes in, and you need to
Misdirect
him to your pet. When Midnight is at 25%, the Huntsman will mount him. After that, pop CD's and burn. He'll charge you every now and then if you stand far off. Since this is a raid, you will need someone else in a group with you to enter it.
And that's it! Congrats on getting your mounts, and if you have any more you'd like to see here, leave a comment and I'll add it in as soon as I figure out an easy sure fire way to do it. Also, thanks to asakawa and all of the Wowhead staff! I wouldn't have been able to make a neat guide like this without your BBC codes!
Edit 1= Added zones and boss order to the listed part (not tabbed) Fixed some coding with the pet talents. More mounts as I get good strategies on them to come. Might include some easier ones listed as well.

This looks like a decent guide, although highly specialized. Why limit only to hunters? Especially at max-level, most classes (if not all) can survive these fights solo.
You list which boss each mount drops off, but in the list section (not tabs) you don't say what instance they're found in. Also, it could be useful to show maps of where the boss is located in the dungeon / raid.
Lastly, it looks like you opted for \
\
when you linked things - might I suggest removing that part and dropping it down to or ? That way, any formatting will happen automatically (rarity color, for instance).
I'm hoping this is a work-in-progress and that more rare mounts are forthcoming, since there are others that can be obtained while solo.
All in all though, well done!

At the pet talents, you have Shale Spider written twice (the first one should be Beetle).
Others mentioned above by SquireKel: links, why only hunter, somewhat low amount of mounts.

I found this guide and decided to give it a go, especially since we are getting shared mounts in MoP. My
hunter
was in mainly 378 gear with a few Dragon Soul raid finder pieces. No buffs of any kind (food, flask) on this first attempt since I mainly did it as an experiment. BM spec, turtle pet, First Aid 525 with
Dense Embersilk Bandage
, normal version (lvl 83) of the dungeons.
-- Tips for North Wind Drake --
Grand Vizier Ertan - it's all about the timing of bandaging and Deterrence.
Glyph of Deterrence
can be useful here. I suggest using a bandage for the first tornado, Deterrence for the second, bandage for the third. If you are lucky your pet will get the Lightning Bolt instead, though I haven't yet figured out how to make it happen on purpose (Feign Death doesn't work).
Altairus - since the cooldown between bandaging is a full minute, you need some other methods of damage mitigation here. He does a pre-cast
before
his channel of Chilling Breath; if you Feign Death during this, he is interrupted. In addition, you can hit Deterrence for one channel of Chilling Breath. Used together: Deterrence, Feign Death, and bandaging should get you through the fight.
After you finish him off, you may just jump off the edge. A helpful whirlwind will take you back to the front where you can reset and repeat.
Using a Spirit Beast is really helpful for this dragon.
Spirit Mend
is very useful. It uses ranged attack power as a modifier, so it scales with gear and can heal a significant amount. With my current gear, the initial heal is about 7k (it can crit too!), with a 5 tick HoT of 4.4k. You also get a damage increase by not using a tank pet, just make sure Mend never falls off. Be sure to
turn off the autocast
and use it manually with the macro below, not doing this will cause your pet to cast it on himself when HP is low.
You can use this macro for targeting yourself and casting it:

As is mentioned, you DO need to kill the trash packs leading to the first boss. The reason for this is that a stone wall blocks the path, so you need the first boss to "spawn" and destroy the wall.
I've heavily edited this post from the original to share the most painless method of clearing these trash packs. In order to get Corborus to spawn you only need to fully clear the
first two
packs (if you don't fully clear the first two, Millhouse will run between them if you continually zerg him down) and only Millhouse Manastorm from the third. With both of the first two, zerg Millhouse down to 50%, feign death, and then finish off the pack after they have reset position. Of the remaining, kill the Earthshaper first (big AoE spell), then Berserkers (they charge), and Warbringers last (you can tranq shot their enrage if necessary). For the third pack, you may just zerg down Millhouse, feign death, and then cause him to spawn Corborus by running nearby as usual.
Then you may proceed in Camouflage to the second boss.
Slabhide - other than various line of sight issues with Mend Pet and the fallen stalactites, the main annoyance with this fight are the magma pools that spawn under you. Since there are no other people with you, you get all of the pools.
Don't forget to take the transporter back to the front, reset, and repeat.

What about the mount from Magister's Terrace, Swift White Hawkstrider (which is also a FOT), the Venomhide Ravasuar from dailies in Un'Goro Crater (also a FOT), and the mount drop from the second to last boss in Setthek Halls? I appreciate they're not as hard to get, but some of the ones on there aren't, Blue Proto Drake and Bronze Drake, not to mention the raid ones which aren't hard just rare.
