Gear in Battle for Azeroth (BFA) is designed around a fresh perspective; there are equivalent gearing paths and gear from any content has a small chance to proc the highest possible item level. Here is a rundown of the different types of ways you can gear up at the start of Battle for Azeroth before Mythic+ Dungeons and Raids.
Now updated for patch 8.3: Visions of N'Zoth and Season 4

Gearing for Shadowlands
How Battle for Azeroth Gear Works
In Season 4, gear from current endgame activities will no longer Warforge or Titanforge, and instead has a chance to become Corrupted. Corrupted gear does not change ilevel, but instead will instead gain both a beneficial effect and an associated amount of the Corruption Stat. While players can gain large amounts of power from these beneficial effects, higher amounts of Corruption also cause the player to become subject to increasingly negative effects such as snaring them, spawning void zones, summoning minions of N'Zoth, and reducing player healing. Please see the
Corruption System Overview Guide
for more information and a full list of positive and negative effects.
Items from previous season content, such as World Quests and previous raid tiers may not roll corrupted, but will continue to Warforge or Titanforge up to their seasonal caps to a maximum of 455 item level.
Note: Shadowlands introduced a "level squish" that fundamentally changed iLevels in every expansion. The values here represent those prior to the squish.
The personal loot system continues to be tweaked in Battle for Azeroth (there is no longer a group/master loot options), however if you win an item of the same or lower ilvl than your current one, then you can trade it to others in the group.
Heart of Azeroth Essences
Essences are a system of power progression for the
added in Patch 8.2/Season 3, allowing players to choose from several talent-like Major and Minor powers. Season 4 adds 7 new essences, as well as a new minor essence slot for allocating an additional bonus.
Each of the 28 current Essences contains a major and minor power, while players will unlock up to three sockets in their Heart of Azeroth over time:
The Major Essence slot is unlocked at Heart Level 35, activating both the Major and Minor power of whatever Essence is socketed there.
At level 55, 65, and 75, additional slots are unlocked, activating the Minor power of whatever Essence is socketed there.
Granting a total of 1 Major, it's associated Minor, and 3 other Minor powers. Each Essence also comes in four qualities, from Uncommon to Legendary, which add new bonuses to the base effect, and all Essences come from predetermined sources, meaning little RNG is involved in obtaining them. Some Essences are role specific, but many are useable by any spec.
For a full overview of all the new Essences, as well as their effects and drop locations at each rank, visit our

Open World Content (355-445)
Non-instanced activities which out in the open game world, the majority of which can be done solo or in a pick up group.
World Bosses (355-445)
In Battle for Azeroth there are 6 World Bosses on Kul Tiras and Zandalari awarding item level 355 loot, 2 inside the Arathi and Darkshore Warfronts awarding item level 370 and 400 respectively, and 2 inside Nazjatar awarding item level 415 loot. Patch 8.3 adds 2 more World Bosses active during the Assaults on the Vale of Eternal Blossoms and Uldum which award item level 445 loot.
The World Bosses will be available as world quests on the map, lasting for the week in which that boss or warfront phase is active. In addition to their loot, you will also receive a reward from the world quest itself, which can vary between War Resources, Artifact Power, and Gold.
Each world boss drops various pieces of gear including trinkets and azerite pieces; the
Battle for Azeroth World Bosses Guide
covers full loot tables and abilities for all the world bosses.

Nazjatar Benthic Gear (385-425)
In 8.2, Nazjatar offers a variety of catch up gear mechanisms using it's Benthic system of upgradeable armor tokens. The gear starts at item level 385, but by exchanging
earned from activities throughout Nazjatar, it can be increased first to item level 400, and then in increments of 5 to up to item level 425.
All non-Azerite Benthic items also have one of several different special effects, ranging from the combat related
to the intriguing
. See our full

for the complete details and list of effects.
Customizable Mechagon Trinket
Several rares throughout Mechagon drop gear and new craftable items, but the most interesting addition is a new trinket, the
, which can be customized with several colored punch cards in order to provide raw stats, a combat proc, and a utility effect of your choice. Punch cards are obtained from both activities within Mechagon and bosses inside Operation: Mechagon. Find out more in our
Pocked Sized Punch Cards Guide
.
World Quests (up to 415)
World quests are a max-level questing system with randomized objectives and rewards all over Kul Tiras and Zandalari. As soon as you hit 120 and complete
/
(Part 1 of the War Campaign), you can embark upon World Quests! These quests show up as objectives on the world map all over Kul Tiras and Zandalar, with quest like objectives, which can vary from killing regular mobs or elites, completing pet battles, crafting gear, and World PvP.
World Quests rewards scale with your item level; the higher your average item level, the higher item level the World Quest rewards will be, up to the cap of 415 item level.
There are also Dungeon World quests which send you into a BFA dungeon to kill a special elite and the final boss, awarding a piece of loot from that dungeon. Of course, farming a dungeon for a specific boss drop is more efficient than waiting for a World Quest to be up. A similar periodic Tortollan weekly quest can award a Normal or Heroic level Raid box (
) for completing 4 Timewalking, Mythic, or Mythic+ dungeons.
The
Today in Battle for Azeroth
section on our home page will track what quests and rewards are up when Battle for Azeroth launches.
Emissaries (up to 445)
Every day, a different
Emissary quest
is available for players, offering Gold, War Resources, Azerite Power, or Gear to include Azerite. The item level received from these quests scale similar to World Quests, so the higher your average item level, the higher the rewards up to a cap of 445 item level.
Faction Assaults (up to 415)
Periodically each day, a different Kul Tiran or Zandalar zone will come under attack by the enemy faction, similar to Legion Invasions. Also called Assaults on the world map, each incursion consists of three stages, beginning with completing four faction world quests and culminating in defeating the incursion leadership, rewarding a weapon or azerite armor up to item level 415.

Faction Incursion overview

Reputation Gear (320-355)
Each faction quartermaster sells a variety of gear at various reputation levels, from 320 at Honored, 335 at Revered, to 355 at Exalted.
At Friendly, Honored and Revered Reputation levels with
, a one-time quest will increase the item level of your
by 15. After these quests are earned on one character, they will be unlocked account wide, regardless of reputation level.

Dungeons (400-475)
In addition to the
10 original dungeons in Battle for Azeroth
, 8.2 has added a new Mythic-only 8 boss mega-dungeon called
Operation: Mechagon
. As of Patch 8.3/Season 4, Operation Mechagon is split into two smaller dungeons for Heroic through Mythic+ difficulties.
Normal, Heroic, and Base Mythic (400-430)
Normal and Heroic dungeons can be entered manually or queued through the dungeon finger, and completed for gear as many times as a player wishes to queue, while Mythic dungeons cannot be queued for and can only award loot once per week each.
Item level of dungeon gear is based on the difficulty of the dungeon. Most gear can Titanforge any number of times to the item level cap of 455 in Season 3. Weapons can only Warforge up to +10 item levels from their base item level, and Azerite Armor pieces can not Warforge whatsoever.
Normal Dungeons: 400 Item Level (at level 120)
Heroic Dungeons: 415 Item Level
Mythic Dungeons: 430 Item Level
To preview loot from each dungeon you can check

.
Mythic+ Keystones (430-475)
Non-Azerite Armor pieces follow a similar reward structure to Legion, scaling in item level based on the difficulty of the dungeon. Azerite Armor does not drop from Mythic+ keystones or the weekly Mythic+ cache.

Activities (355-425)
Activities are various non-dungeon and raid scenarios which are queued for and generally completed either solo or in small groups. They offer a wide arrange of supplementary and catch up gear.
Horrific Visions (420-470)
Horrific Visions, as well as the new BoA tokens and Visions of N'zoth Assaults, can award gear from a "pre-raid" set of catch up gear unique to patch 8.3. You can view the full pre-raid sets with the links below. The stats on this gear is pre-determined, and defeating Thrall/Alleria in a Horrific Vision will reward one piece of gear from these sets. The item level of this piece depends on how many Horrific Vision objectives were completed, along with how many Faceless Masks were active.
420 item level
All 5 Objectives:

All 5 Objectives with 5 Faceless Masks:
470 item level
You'll continue to earn gear each run, but at a decreasing item level tier if you've already done a Horrific Vision run that same week with the same amount of objectives and faceless masks active. Qualifying for a new higher item level tier will reward the appropriate item level gear and then resume where you left off.
Example:
No masks, you do a Horrific Vision run and clear 4 out of 5 objectives. You earn a 440 item level piece.
You do another run that same week and clear 4 out of 5 objectives again. You earn a 435 item level piece.
You try a 3rd time that same week and manage to finally clear 5 out of 5 objectives. You get a 445 item level piece.
You then try for a 4th time that same week and again clear 5 out of 5 objectives. You earn a 430 item level piece this time, since you have already earned the 445, 440, and 435 tiers this week.
Legendary Cloak (470-500)
is obtained during the Patch 8.3
introductory questline
. In addition to being a powerful piece of gear, it offers Corruption Resistance which allows you to equip more Corrupted gear, as well as Sanity Protection to make Horrific Visions easier. By completing Wrathion's quests inside Horrific Visions, the cloak can be upgraded up to 14 times in order to increase its item level and provide more bonuses.
As the Legendary Cloak is intended to be used by all max level players, epic cloaks will not drop from the Ny'alotha raid, Mythic+ or PvP caches.

Warfronts (340-460)
As of patch 8.1, there are now two Warfronts, the Battle for Stromgarde in the Arathi Highlands and the Battle for Darkshore in Darkshore, both of which also update their respective zones with new rares, world quests, collectables, and gear rewards. Each Warfront is a rotating event in which the player factions exchange ownership over the zones, from collection phase, to battle, controlling phase, and under attack. Each battle is independent, and can be queued for a couple days after enough contributions are provided, following which the zone will be controlled by that faction, giving them the opportunity to do special quests and face a unique world boss. Keep in mind that you will need ilvl 320 to queue for Warfront battles.
There are various sources of gear available from Warfronts.
/
World Boss: Offers a 370 item for killing the World Boss in Arathi Highlands only available while your faction has control of Warfront.
/
World Boss: Offers a 400 item for killing the World Boss in Darkshore only available while your faction has control of Warfront.

/
: Awards a 400 item piece of Warfront set gear.
Claiming victory in the Battle for Stromgarde or Battle of Darkshore scenario will award a 340 item of the Arathi Highlands Warfront set in addition to any quest rewards. This can be done any number of times while the scenario is available to your faction.
Killing Rare NPC spawns in the outdoor Arathi Highlands has a chance to drop 340 items, while Darkshore rares drop 355 items, including azerite armor.
Our
Warfronts in Battle for Azeroth
guide explains in detail on how Warfronts work in Battle for Azeroth.
Heroic Warfronts are a new feature in 8.2 which requires a premade raid of 10-20 players, tuned for item level 415. They are much more difficult and easy to lose if players are not working together, but their associated quest
awards item level 430 gear. As of Patch 8.3,
is available, rewarding up to item level 460 loot.
Island Expeditions (385)
Island Expeditions are a new form of content in Battle for Azeroth. Reminiscent of scenarios from Mists of Pandaria, players will enter in teams of three to adventure to a distant island in order to collect Azerite and mystery treasures. Similar to the old scenarios, the team composition of your party is not role dependent - you can have an Expedition with three DPS, three healers or three tanks, and you should be able to complete it!
Island Expeditions are supposed to be quick content of 5-20 minutes, and are generally the best source of grinding Azerite Power for leveling the Heart of Azeroth.
Plundered Weapons
and
Armor
, as well as various cosmetics, pets, and mounts are potential rewards from completed Island Expeditions. You can learn more in our guide to
Island Expeditions
.
Crafting (300-475)
There are multiple crafting reagents in Battle for Azeroth, used for various player equipment and high level crafting. Crafted gear requires the profession that creates it in order to wear, and all crafted gear provides a socket, except Engineering Azerite helmets.
is acquired from Scrapping and some crafting transmutations.
drops from Mythic dungeons in Season 1.
drops from Mythic dungeons in Season 2.
drops from raid bosses in Uldir.
drops from raid bosses Dazar'alor.
A Restored/Empowered/Radiating Abyssal Focus will be needed to craft Eternal Palace equivalent gear.
An
unlocked/Restored Void Focus
is needed to craft Season 4/Ny'alotha equivalent gear.
The Scrapper, located in Boralus/Dazar'alor allows you to destroy gear in return for BFA crafting reagents. These reagents generally correspond to the item base and can help supply crafters who lack gathering professions.

I miss buying with honor points. Random caches at the end of the winning BG is too much of gamble for my tasting. But the bar to fill once a week is nice. Knowing what you're farming is a good thing. They could improve our control over what we get for our time.

What this guide leaves out is the item level requirements to queue for certain portions of content.

As of today (24 hours since reset) faction incursions were still giving me 370 gear. I'm 383. Do I need to cross 385 for it (385 rewards) to kick in?
Edit.. Almost 3 weeks now. I'm 392 but Incursions still give 370 loot. Fair to say it's safe to edit the guide now.

Not sure if I'm happy about all this free loot. Normal of the new raid is pretty pointless because so many already have so much 385 gear.
Even time walking gives 365 loot to a fresh 120! This is ridiculous.
I'm not being an elitist, am no mythic raider... can just about get through heroic. Any M+ over 5 is too hard for me. But I still feel good earning my loot.
I can easily get through world content and war campaign on alts at 340.. which is what the 'free' loot should help me achieve. Maybe a little higher but not at this level!

This is outdated. World quests cap out around 370ish now and I'm sure there are other updates that changed some of the info here.

I'd like to know what the source is for faction assaults dropping azerite armor in 8.2. Azerite armor was removed as a possible reward for faction assaults in (I believe) 8.1.5 and I haven't seen anything anywhere that indicates they're putting it back. (Happy to be corrected, but I went looking and couldn't find anything.)

In addition to the 10 original dungeons in Battle for Azeroth, 8.3 has added a new Mythic-only 8 boss mega-dungeon called Operation: Mechagon.
At the start of 8.3, only the Battle for Stromgarde is available on heroic difficulty.
I do believe it is meant to say 8.2

You can get Expulsom too thru mostly some Profession WQ's that can spawn either at Boralus or Dazar'Alor, giving around 5 each.

Dunno why they've already put in the season 3 stuff but for those who want to know the live server table for patch 8.1.5 enjoy:
Keystone End of Dungeon Weekly Cache

+3 375 385
+4 380 390
+5 385 390
+6 385 395
+7 390 400
+8 395 400
+9 395 405
+10 400 410

Assaults level range is incorrect. They're still capped at 370 in 8.2

Just head to Nazjatar you can get full 385 gear that is upgradeable also, really nice.

Title for faction incursions is 415, but in the body of the text it says up to 385. That's a very big misleading jump in gear - they typically have only matched world quests why the stated difference? Why not use live data or data closer or edit it in when its closer to live (like when 8.2 launched).

It would be nice if you didn't use the pvp conquest gear table from season 2 when you have updated everything else for season 3/8.2. It is made even more annoying thjat you hide it behind a spoiler like it is some big news that hasn't been out since last year. Please update the table and in the meantime maybe make a note that those are incorrect for the people that may not have done the conquest grind last season.

Weekly conquest reward data STILL has not been updated for season 3 (shows season 2 rewards).
