Frost Death Knight PvP Overview
Frost Death Knight offers powerful sustained damage (mostly in the form of cleave), and a situationally-impressive utility toolkit. It also boasts great self healing and enormous Crowd Control prevention. Frost DK has arguably the most powerful movement disruption out of all specs and shuts down classes that rely on their mobility to do well. Read further into the guide to get detailed explanations on what abilities and talent combinations lead to Frost DK having so much success in these areas.
Frost Death Knight Strengths in PvP
Enormous AoE Burst
Frost Death Knights have very powerful burst damage in the form of cleave.
寒冰联结
is one of the most impactful AoE damaging abilities in the game, providing both massive damage output and a crippling 70% slow. This ability requires setup, like a
死亡之握
into an AoE stun to get multiple enemy players on top of each other.
冷酷严冬
adds a lot of passive AoE pressure to these burst windows, that you can build up with the talent
风暴汇聚
.

coupled with a
白霜
proc will also add another source of AoE damage to this window. Finally,

adds 15% Haste and resource generation allowing the constant use of abilities during that AoE burst setup.
High Sustained Damage
In addition to having high AoE burst damage, Frost has solid sustained pressure.

has a short 1 minute cooldown baseline and is off the global, allowing for on demand burst windows. That can be reduced further through the

talent.

and

add more sustained damage to the spec, with
冷酷严冬
on a very short 20 second cooldown.

deals massive damage during

allowing chunks of meaningful output even when not doing a setup. Furthermore, Frost has high resource generation from abilities like

as well as passives like

, allowing pressure to continue over long periods of time.
Crowd Control Prevention
Death Knights have a lot of different tools for preventing and removing crowd control effects that allow them to keep high uptime on a target and use their burst windows more effectively.

, as well as being a defensive cooldown, prevents all forms of magical CC which covers a great variety of effects. Magical effects like

, and many other abilities can be prevented in this way allowing for the Death Knight to continue bursting during their cooldowns.

prevents CC by making you immune to stuns during its duration, but can even be used during stuns to remove them.

also prevents a healthy amount of Crowd Control effects, namely
恐惧
, which is prominent in many comps.
Finally,
死亡脚步
prevents knockback effects, enemy grips, and slows.
This is an absurd combination of tools for CC prevention.
Disruptive Toolkit
寒冰锁链
is an undispellable 70% slow with a 30 yard range, and a one rune cost allowing it to be used many times especially with Frost Death Knight's resource generation. All of these factors together, which are all extremely beneficial in all forms of PvP, make it arguably the most potent slow in the game. It can be used for peeling for healers, catching up to kiting players, or even as a tool for the Death Knight to kite other melee.

can be used in similar ways - you can grip enemy players off your teammates to peel for them, or pull a kiting player back to you.
With AoE crowd control effects like

you can be disruptive in different ways by interrupting casts, peeling players, CCing healers, or setting up extremely powerful burst windows that will damage multiple players Frost DK also has access to jarring PVP talents for the enemy to deal with.
神智不清
is a PvP talent unique to Frost, which puts enemy team's movement abilities on much larger cooldowns. This works with abilities like Mage's
闪现术
and Monk's
滚地翻
.
无情冰寒
will lower their haste, causing everything they do to be affected. Global cooldowns, resource generation, casting speed, auto attacks.
This very unique toolkit for disruption is only expanded the more you learn about Frost DK, which will all be explained in the various sections of this guide.
Great Self Healing
灵界打击
is great constant self heal as it has no cooldown, only a resource requirement. This ability scales with either the Death Knight's maximum health, which is higher than other classes due to

, or a percentage of damage taken, which allows it to heal for enormous amounts during enemy burst windows. This is amplified by

allowing you to use

much more frequently, as well as giving you a free
灵界打击
upon cast. Death Strike alone makes Death Knight survivability quite high, simply through their ability to self-heal through most damage. Death Knights can also use
巫妖之躯
coupled with

on
themselves
to actually provide healing even when you're not on a target. You also receive passive leech during this window.
Frost Death Knight Weaknesses in PvP
Damage Mitigation
While Death Knight still does well in survivability due to its self healing and anti-CC effects, it suffers by not having a big "wall" or high source of damage mitigation. For example,

from warrior provides a constant 20% damage reduction, which is nearly as much as our
冰封之韧
provides on a 3 minute cooldown. As another example,

is half the cooldown of
冰封之韧
while providing 40% damage reduction instead of 30%. Our survivability is not necessarily a weakness, but when dampening hits in arena (healing done is reduced over time in arena matches!) our lack of high damage mitigation effects will cause us to generally become the kill target.
Mobility Issues
In BfA, Death Knight's spell
幻影步
is now a talent with a longer cooldown (up from 45 seconds) and is also in the same row as
天灾契约
, which was previously baseline. Otherwise,
死亡脚步
is the core aspect of Death Knight mobility. The passive allows the Death Knight to avoid the bigger 50% and 70% slows from other classes, but the movement speed increase is fairly low compared to other similar effects in the game. Death Knight also lacks a personal gap closer, making it difficult to reconnect on a target out of range. When compared to Windwalker Monks or Havoc Demon Hunters, Death Knights move very slowly.
Crowd Control
Arguably, Frost Death Knight's biggest weakness is their lack of crowd control options. While their anti-movement tools are impressive as noted above, their ability to actually keep healers out of the game through crowd control is minimal. Currently, the staple crowd control options that Frost has are available on the same talent row:
窒息
and
致盲冰雨
. This means Frost really only has one crowd control effect available, on a longer cooldown than most others. Even when compared solely to other melee, crowd control is a clear weakness for Frost. Even its counterpart, Unholy, has an additional stun and an additional kick for healer disruption.
Frost Death Knight in Shadowlands Patch 9.2
Frost DK is receiving several buffs to the Necrolord Covenant which is far and away our best covenant. These include:
憎恶附肢
will deal approximately 28% more damage.
残暴之握
is doubled in effectiveness.
憎恶之狂
will make the target take 20% more damage instead of 10% from your attacks.
These are massive output buffs as even Frost DK does a huge amount of damage with
憎恶附肢
during its burst because of all of its strength modifiers. Therefore, the spell will be lasting longer, dealing more damage from two different buffs, and buffing your abilities by more. A three-fold output increase to your most powerful burst window.
Furthermore, Frost DK will be getting a very potent tier set. The two effects are:
极地突袭
and
极地突袭
. While the 2-set bonus does not seem particularly impactful, the Critical Strike increase during burst windows will still buff the damage of meaningful spells like
憎恶附肢
and
冰霜打击
giving them even more oomph after the many buffs they have received. The 4-set though is clearly valuable as it simply adds even more damage to every
湮灭
during your burst window. This raw damage increase per global helps our burst be on par with the most potent burst specs in the game, and should be the final addition we need to compete in this fast paced meta.
Talents and Racials in Shadowlands Patch 9.2
In 9.2 there are no changes to your PvE talents, so the previous talent setup mentioned here will still be ideal. If anything, the talent
湮没
becomes even more required due to
极地突袭
. Orc will still be your best race!
Rotations and Strategy in Shadowlands Patch 9.2
Your rotation will stay very much the same as well for 9.2. These damage modifiers that we're getting are all passively baked into our burst window, so it will be the same as it has throughout the expansion except even more potent.
Gear and Legendaries in Shadowlands Patch 9.2
For 9.2, the main focal point of the patch is Tier Set bonuses and the use of double Legendaries with your Covenant Legendary. As I mentioned above, both of these things are incredible for Frost DK's viability as a whole, so we will need to pursue them as quickly as the patch allows. You will be attempting to get your 4-set as quickly as possible (yes, despite any suboptimal stats this will provide, you will
always
prioritize your tier set over stat weight itemization,
ALWAYS
) and crafting
憎恶之狂
as soon as or even before the patch releases. As one of your Legendaries must be the Covenant Legendary, you will never take
憎恶之狂
off. Therefore, your 2nd Legendary can be any of the viable choices outlined in the Gear section of this guide.
Covenants in Shadowlands Patch 9.2
For 9.2, you will only ever choose Necrolord and its not even remotely close. It was overwhelmingly better throughout the entire expansion, but now they've buffed all of its core components across the board. You would simply be playing on challenge mode to use any other Covenant besides Necrolord.

Archive
Frost DK received almost no changes in 9.1.5, and the changes it did receive have no bearing in PvP as they are for covenants that we do not use. That said,
冰霜打击
received a 30% damage buff in a PvP setting, giving viability to the
根除打击
conduit. It also got a slight buff to
憎恶之狂
making it even more competitive with
绝对零度
.
Outside of these changes, there are conduit buffs to
凋零之地
and
绝对黑暗
which we will not be using. This is everything that happened for DKs, so it looks like we'll be waiting until 9.2 to see some real shakeups in the meta!
Frost DK received a great deal of changes in 9.1. They were handled in such a way that it is not definitively a nerf or a buff, but rather a much needed redesign of the scope of the spec. Prior to 9.1, Frost DK was limited in its options against caster compositions, as all of its most powerful toolkit would be cleave or auras that only affect the nearby targets to the Frost DK. Since casters tended to stay apart from each other, this made most of Frost DK's toolkit obsolete simply by design.
This all changed in 9.1 in many ways. First,
凛冬帷幕
and

were removed from Frost DK. The power of
死灵光环
was actually somewhat refunneled back into the spec, as
冰霜之柱
is no longer reduced in value by 33% in PvP combat. The removal of these two PvP talents lowered the passive power of the spec, allowing them to give it more situational options for all sorts of enemy compositions, which they absolutely did. They added:
无情冰寒
, a crippling disruption tool, especially against casters. More on this below.
绞袭
which is an instant, zero resource cost, blanket silence. Very powerful in burst windows.
which uniquely destroys caster compositions.
死亡回响
, granting a ton of mobility and anti-mobility in just one PvP talent.
...and even more PvP talent reworks and additions. Info on these talents and the ones not listed here will be found in the Talents & Racials section of this guide. These changes combined to make Frost DK a less passively oppressive spec that got countered by wizard cleaves, into a more well-rounded spec with an interesting toolkit and tons of customization in the build you wish to run.
Frost Death Knight in Shadowlands Patch 9.0.5
Frost DK received very few changes in 9.0.5. There are mostly bug fixes and a few quality of life changes, including removing the stun from
亡者复生
so when used as a minor DPS increase it wont automatically put the enemy team on DR out of your control. They also fixed
鲜红符文
to reset the debuff every arena. These are very minor but absolutely necessary as cleaning up bugs or other problems with the spec helps it play as smoothly as possible. The minor Kyrian Covenant Abiltiy buffs are not enough to change us over in this current meta, but will absolutely make it even more enticing with the game potentially slows down in future seasons.
Frost DK is still a very powerful option in all the compositions I outline in this guide. The classes in the meta have switched around a bit and may be slightly less favorable for Frost DK as a whole but it still a very powerful option in many top tier melee cleaves. Happy 9.0.5, Death Knights!

Just a couple of things I noticed during my experience within the previous months:
Talents:
Especially for arena I really recommend skilling
酷寒突袭
since it has a way higher initial burst potential and doesn't need to be built up as
冰冷之爪
does.
Usually
天灾契约
is the best choice, but depending on the situation
幻影步
can be a good alternative sometimes. I like to skill it when I face combos in arena with high root potential as frost mage or also sometimes druids. Otherwise frost mages simply kite me to death.
湮没
can be a good alternative to
冰龙吐息
as well. It doesn't have as much burst potential, but it gives the possibility to burst more often since
冰龙吐息
has a cooldown of 2 minutes while
冰霜之柱
only has 45 seconds. But in most scenarios the heavy burst spec with
冰龙吐息
should be the better choice.
Additionally I would love to see a section for trinkets.
Is it better to have 2 usable trinkets, or 1 usable + 1 with a proc?
What usable trinket is the best?
What itemlevel-version of a not-BiS-trinket beats the BiS one on a lower itemlevel, etc...?
I can also really recommend this frost dk template for WeakAuras on Wago:

It covers the cooldown and active timer for all cooldowns of all specs and has a very clear design.
The only thing I customized on it is to create an additional proc-overview-area that shows all my active procs like

Breath of Sindragosa and Frostwyrm's Fury are both nerfed by at least 40% since march of last year. You should probably never take them nor recommend anyone take them in pvp.
Inexorable Assault is the best T1 choice in all situations because it's a consistent damage buff while Icy Talons requires you to not be getting kited or cc'd. You can at least save up some charges of IE while getting kited. Cold Heart might be interesting to test, but I don't think tying damage to your spam slow is a good idea.
Murderous Efficiency isn't optimal especially with Frozen Pulse. We want to be rune starved to an extent.
Death Pact loses value in 2s because of the higher dampening. There may be an advantage to taking Permafrost against melee cleaves when also taking Lichborne. Maledicts make the absorb on DP even worse, but it's still the best talent in that row. I really wish frost also got Spelleater.
Delirium+Heartstopper Aura is an effective 80% cd rate slow on rolls and blinks and should always be considered vs mages and monks.
This guide has outdated Legion stuff in it like

Lichborne can also be used to heal yourself. pop lichborne and death coil yourself.
