Thalyssra is an arcanist and Leader of the Nightborne, a unique elf race who calls Suramar their home. She and her people played a significant role in the Legion story campaign. With Battle for Azeroth, a lot of attention has been put back on Thalyssra and her role as a champion of the Horde.
Before World of Warcraft
Early life in Suramar
Thalyssra lived her early life as a member of the Nightborne, a group of night elves that separated from the Kaldorei Empire led by Queen Azshara. Thanks to the incredible magic of a font called the Nightwell, which was built by the Highborne, the elves were able to create a protective barrier around their capital Suramar City which helped them to survive the Sundering.
10,000 years ago... My city was radiant... The jewel of the Night Elf Empire. Suramar. Our people prospered for centuries ... Until the Legion came. Entranced by the power they offered, our queen betrayed us ... to the ruin of the world. As destruction drew ever closer, a desperate choice was made ... To conjure a powerful shield that would save our beloved city. It worked. Centuries passed. Without moonlight. Without sunlight. To survive, we turned to the Nightwell, a font of great power at the city's heart. Slowly ... it changed us and ultimately drew the Legion once more to our gates. They offered us a trade. The Nightwell for our lives. As the Elders planned their surrender, some of us ... rebelled. We failed. Now the Devils have taken Suramar. And by the curse of the Nightwell, I am damned to wither away ... as my ... city ... burns.
That protective barrier isolated Thalyssra and her people from the outside world for over ten thousand years; in addition to that, the elves’ addiction to the powers of the Nightwell grew stronger and stronger to a point where they couldn’t sustain their lives without it; their bodies slowly transformed, and they became the Nightborne that we know today.
Legion
Twilight of Suramar
In the comic
Twilight of Suramar
, the history between the Nightborne and the Burning Legion has been revisited.
When the Burning Legion comes to terrorize the Broken Isles, Gul’dan visits Suramar City. In an act of false kindness, he gives the Nightborne three days to deactivate the protective barrier around the city so that the Legion could access the power of the Nightwell. In return, the Nightborne will not only be untroubled but also be accepted as loyal allies within the Burning Legion. Grand Magistrix Elisande, back then Ruler of Suramar, advises with her closest subjects, Thalyssra being one of them. She tells her leader to not trust the Burning Legion, not last because of obvious happenings in the past.
However, Elisande chooses to ally with the Burning Legion. Together with Advisor Melandrus, Thalyssra forms a group of rebels to overturn Elisande and avert her plans. Unfortunately, their coup fails, and Thalyssra and Melandrus manage to escape the Nighthold.
But in the end it is Melandrus who betrays Thalyssra and the rebels; outside of Suramar, Melandrus stabs her in the back and pushes her down a cliff.
Suramar Campaign
Thalyssra survives the assassination attempt, and she manages to get out a message seeking for help.
Khadgar receives the message
and sends adventurers to investigate the matter of the Nightborne,
starting off the player campaign in Suramar
.
In the meantime, Thalyssra’s state as a Nightborne starts to fade because she no longer can draw life power from the Nightwell in form of precious arcwine, turning her into a nightfallen. That is why she keeps
looking for her old friend Kel’danath
, who has been banished from Suramar City; back when he was a Nightborne, he was known to experiment with Withered, the nightfallen who turned feral, to find a cure against the withdrawal symptoms of magical substances coming from the Nightwell.
But Kel’danath succumbed to the withered state as well, and Thalyssra and the adventurers only find the results of his experiment in the form of a withered called
Subject 16
. Later they find out that the relatively calm withered test subject has been exposed to the energy of an arcan’dor seed coming from the magical arcan’dor tree.
From there on, Thalyssra builds up the Nightfallen resistance and tries to establish a living specimen of an arcan’dor tree within their refuge Shal’Aran. Together with the adventurers, she manages to nurture the tree,
and by eating the fruit of it
, Thalyssra is cured of her Nightwell addiction and turns into a Nightborne again.
She bites into the fruit and her body absorbs the arcane.
First Arcanist Thalyssra says:
We are on the brink of a new age for the Nightborne.
First Arcanist Thalyssra says:
Without you, none of this would have been possible.
First Arcanist Thalyssra says:
For now, we shall gather our strength. When the time comes, I trust we can call upon you to help us liberate Suramar.
Back at full strength, Thalyssra and the Nightborne resistance, together with other elves gathered by Liadrin and Tyrande, plans to attack and free Suramar City from the Legion’s grasp. She and the adventurers manage to bring down Elisande in
the Nighthold
, and from there on Thalyssra is the new leader of the Nightborne; one of her actions is the deactivation of the already unstable Nightwell, as she sees it not only as a source of incredible power but also as a source of terrible danger for the Nightborne as a people.
Battle for Azeroth
Search for Allies
In the battle against the Alliance, Sylvanas is in dire need of new allies to bolster the Horde ranks. Liadrin recommends the Nightborne as a potential addition, as she has seen the incredible potential of Thalyssra’s people during the attack on Suramar City and the Nighthold.
Sylvanas puts Lor’themar in diplomatic charge to weigh up the Nightborne situation. After a good talk and an incident at the Sunwell involving Alleria Windrunner and some creatures of the void, Thalyssra sees that the blood elves have been able to keep their traditions while being part of the Horde and agrees to join the Horde.
Lady Liadrin says
: Warchief Sylvanas Windrunner, this is First Arcanist Thalyssra of Suramar.
First Arcanist Thalyssra says
: An honor, Warchief. I have fought alongside both Lady Liadrin and the regent lord. Their courage is a credit to your Horde.
Lady Sylvanas Windrunner says
: Indeed, First Arcanist.
First Arcanist Thalyssra says
: The Horde embodies strength. Determination. Individuality. Traits we shal'dorei value as well.
First Arcanist Thalyssra says
: It is time for the nightborne to find allies among the kingdoms of Azeroth. If you will have us, we would be proud to pledge our forces to your cause.
Lady Sylvanas Windrunner says
: For millennia Suramar stood alone. This day, you become part of something greater. I accept your oath of service, Thalyssra.
First Arcanist Thalysrra says
: Suramar stands with the Horde!
Lady Liadrin says
: For the Horde!
Lady Sylvanas Windrunner says
: For the Horde!
Since then,
the Nightborne can be played as an Horde Allied Race
.
Thalyssra and Zandalar
In order to earn the support of the Zandalari fleet for the Horde, Thalyssra is chosen
to help free Princess Talanji and her prophet Zul from the Stormwind Stockades
. The secret operation is a total success, and after managing the assembly of the Horde’s portals in Dazar’alor, Thalyssra returns to Suramar to take care of her people.
Later in Battle for Azeroth, Thalyssra makes an appearance during the meeting of the Horde leaders and the arrest of Baine Bloodhoof. In the meeting, Sylvanas treats both Baina and Thomas Zelling as traitors because they saved Derek Proudmoore, turned Forsaken by Sylvanas to become another tool of war, and brought him back to his sister Jaina.
Thalyssra, being witness of what looks like the beginning of the end for the Horde, fears that Baine might experience the same fate as she did when turning against Elisande and hopes that Baine will not end with a dagger in the back as well:
Our rebellion against Elisande was just, and it earned me a blade in the back. I pray Baine does not meet a similar fate.
The nightborne are still new to the Horde. Perhaps I should seek Lor'themar's council. He understands what my people have endured, and I have learned much through our conversations.
Rise of Azshara
Thalyssra takes a leading role in the exploration of Nazjatar. Once a high elf herself, she shares a whole lot of history with the capital city once called Zin-Azshari.
Together with the adventurer and Lor’themar, they managed to recruit the Unshackled tribes to serve under the Horde banner.
Similar to the fate of Shandris Feathermoon, players can experience a longer quest line surrounding the fate of Thalyssra and her former student Sivara. Eventually she finds out about Azshara’s pact with N’Zoth and her friend Sivara joining the naga queen.
Another quest chain leads Thalyssra and the adventurer into deep Nazjatar territory. Both eventually manage to take control of the Javelins of Suramar, a very powerful artifact that could help to steal the Tidestone of Golganneth, one of the most powerful artifacts in Azeroth’s history, away from Azshara.
Together with Jaina, Genn Greymane and Shandris Feathermoon, Thalyssra advances into the Eternal Palace to forcefully take the tidestone. In the fight against Za’qul, Thalyssra uses portal magic to help players against the spreading madness of N’Zoth’s most powerful general.
In 8.2.5,
Thalyssra experiences the happenings around Varok Saurfang and Sylvanas first-hand,
not last because she is close to Lor’themar, a close friend of Saurfang.
Eventually, Thalyssra is ordered to protect the Horde troops during the fight for Orgrimmar. We know now that the fight never happened because Varok Saurfang challenged Sylvanas to one of the most important duels in the history of World of Warcraft.
Visions of N’Zoth
In 8.3, Thalyssra plays a minor role in the process of the Vulpera
joining the Horde as an Allied Race
.
In the aftermath of the Fourth War, Thalyssra and Lor’themar find themselves in a short but sweet talk about a possible tête-à-tête of peace in Suramar:
Lor'themar: Thank you again for leading our forces in Nazjatar alongside me, Thalyssra. Your insight and courage were key to our victory.
First Arcanist: It was an honor, Lor'themar. I am relieved the war is finally over. Now you have no excuse to refuse my invitation to visit Suramar.
Lor'themar: Well, uh... I have been away from Silvermoon for some time. No doubt my people require--
First Arcanist: Halduron has assured me that Quel'Thalas is quite secure. And Rommath said that if you put up a fuss, he will teleport you to the Nighthold himself.
Lor'themar: It seems my closest allies are conspiring against me!
First Arcanist: Would it really take a conspiracy for you to spend time alone with me?
Lor'themar: No, my lady. It would be my pleasure.
First Arcanist: A suitably chivalrous answer, Regent Lord. There may be hope for you yet! Perhaps I can even teach you to relish the... simpler joys of life.
Lor'themar: Perhaps you can, First Arcanist. Perhaps you can.
First Arcanist: I will accept, if you will stand by my side, as counselor... and friend.
A Moment in Verse
Blizzard released a
short story
about the budding relationship between Lor'themar Theron and Thalyssra in the build-up to Shadowlands.
Lor'themar makes good on his promise to visit Thalyssra, and is shown to have quite fallen in love with her. They indulge in a friendly poetry contest, judged by the poets of Suramar and which Thalyssra easily wins, before retiring to talk more privately. Thalyssra notices that Lor'themar's poem is about Kael'thas Sunstrider, whose betrayal still seems to haunt the Blood Elf Regent Lord. Thalyssra's own poem is about truly experiencing the pleasures and pains of life. She gentle suggests the reason why Lor'themar dwells on old wounds because they are familiar, and encourages him to focus on the present. They kiss, and for once Lor'themar is able to decide to enjoy the moment - the outside world can wait.
Horde Council
Like many of the Horde faction leaders, Thalyssra took her place on the newly formed Horde Council after Sylvanas abandoned the Horde. To perform her council duties, she travelled often to Orgrimmar. While used to the luxurious city of Suramar, who she enjoyed bringing Lor'themar to for visits, Thalyssra still managed to find some pleasure in Orgrimmar, which she considered an acquired taste.
When Talanji, the queen of the Zandalari Trolls, tried to convince the Horde to support her in her desire to get revenge on the Alliance - particularly Jaina Proudmoore - for the death of her father, Thalyssra was among those who warned that it would endanger the newly formed armistice with the Alliance. Ultimately, the Council chose to support Talanji in her reign in Zandalar, but not in her desire for revenge. When the Horde Council decided to send the Troll Zekhan as an ambassador to Talanji's kingdom, Thalyssra was the one to tell him, informing him that it would be a great honor. She also helped explain that Zekhan's duties would include spying on Talanji, and mentioned that his youth would very likely cause the Zandalari queen to underestimate him.
When Talanji later needed help from the Horde against an attack from rebels, Thalyssra was one of the Horde leaders to travel to Nazmir in Zandalar and assist in the battle, leading a small host of Nightborne archers. Thalyssra also assisted by summoning the portals that transported most of the Horde forces to Zandalar. Though the effort exhausted her, she was able to recover and summon more, smaller portals when needed in the battle. Thalyssra and her archers faced off against Sira Moonwarden, the Undead Night Elf who had joined Sylvanas's side, and assisted in her capture.
The Horde won the battle, and Talanji was convinced to take up her place on the Horde Council as a result. Before leaving the Zandalar capital city of Dazar'alor, Thalyssra expressed her admiration for the city. As they were both nobles used to fine cities filled with luxuries, Thalyssra also promised to show Talanji all the best places in Orgrimmar when she visited as part of her new duties on the Council.
