Shadowlands is almost upon us, bringing with it Patch 9.0 and a large chunk of Class changes and updates. In this guide, we will take a look at the most significant changes for Frost Death Knight, detailing how you can expect to play the spec during the Shadowlands pre-patch.

How to Play Frost Death Knight in Shadowlands Pre-Patch
The Frost Death Knight is a proc-based spec with a core kit of three spells:
,
and
.
deals direct damages and spends our
Rune
resource. It also absorbs our procs of
which guarantees a critical strike! We have a total of 6 Runes that regenerate over 10 seconds (decreasing with haste) once we spend them. We can regenerate 3 Runes at any given time so it's important to always keep 3 on Cooldown to maximise this recharge! The Runes we spend generate
Runic Power
which we spend on
. Finally, when we gain procs of
from using our
s, they are used on
, which also applies our DoT,
.
Coming in the Shadowlands Pre-Patch is the ability to use both 1-handed and 2-handed weapons. We can go for the fast-hitting dual-wield option that allows us to utilise two of our special weapon enchants from the Runeforge. We can also choose a heavy-hitting 2-handed weapon that greatly boosts our
damage through
!
The Frost Death Knight is the master of death, magic, and frost. We can control Undead Minions through
, raise fallen allies with
and summon the dead to do our bidding with
. We are masters of magical defense, both negating magical debuffs and absorbing magical damage through
and
. The latter boosts our utility by providing great magical defense zones for our allies. Finally, we control the power of the undead frost dragons, expelling their frosty breath with
or calling them to rain havoc on the battlefield with
and
.
Playing a Frost Death Knight in the Shadowlands Pre-Patch presents a large number of different and flavourful builds. You can go for the bursty, cleavy build relying heavily on
, a consistent and fast-paced
build, or one focusing on big
damage through
.

How Different Does Frost Death Knight Feel in the Shadowlands Pre-Patch?
There are no major rotational changes to the Frost Death Knight coming into the pre-patch. We might see some talent power shifts but the overall rotation won't change really. If you've played a Frost Death Knight during BFA, you'll have absolutely no problem transitioning into the pre-patch!
The only rotational change is the following:
Use
on Cooldown.
How Do the GCD Changes Affect Frost Death Knight in Shadowlands Pre-Patch
Frost has seen two abilities being taken off the GCD:
and
. This is great for general gameplay as these buttons didn't do much on-press.
did recently see its duration nerfed from 15 to 12 seconds, possibly to slightly counteract the gain from being off the GCD (you essentially gain one more GCD within the buff).
off the GCD makes it much more versatile. Especially within Breath, you no longer need to sacrifise a GCD to use this ability. This allows us to use it more aggressively, waiting for quite a long time before activating it within
.
New Abilities and Talents for Frost Death Knight in Shadowlands Pre-Patch
With the pre-patch, lots of old abilities are coming back, as well as a pvp-talent becoming baseline. Below is a list of all the spells, as well as their impact for us!
- A fire-and-forget Cooldown.
- The PvP talent is now baseline with 20% damage reduction instead of 60%. A 20% magic damage reduction to your Raid is
incredibly
strong and will make this spell a huge addition to our utility kit!
- Another PvP talent gone baseline, this provides a nice addition to both utility and survivability. We can dodge multiple forms of CC and heal ourselves with the Leech. Finally, since we turn undead, we can also use
on ourselves to heal, something that's useful in a few niche scenarios!
- An ability from the Unholy Death Knight's arsenal. This deals less damage than our core Runic Power spender
so will most likely not be used for damaging purposes. However, as mentioned above, we can use it to heal ourselves during
, something that can be useful!
- A second spell from the Unholy DK's arsenal. Most likely added so that
(Covenant ability) would work with a Frost DK. Worth casting in AoE!
(Talent) - A new talent replacing
that's gone baseline. It really feeds into
and will most likely exclusively see play in conjunction with this ability. A bit out-of-place in a row otherwise focused on AoE damage.
5 new Runeforges - It's awesome to see some additions to an otherwise stale corner of the Death Knight ability kit. We might also see a Runeforge that provides an alternative to the usual set of
and
!
- With 20 extra Runic Power and a Runic power generation increase, this Runeforge is obviously targeted at resource generation. This specifically has value for
since it allows us to extend the duration, however, a longer breath isn't always a better breath! Especially here, not picking one of the other Runeforges directly decreases the damage of
and you'd need to be able to extend it enough to warrant the change.
- Increased damage to
as well as a heal when your health falls low, this Runeforge is obviously catered towards Blood Death Knights. It might see play in situations where survivability is of utmost importance, but even then,
probably heals for more overall.
- A fully defensive Runeforge that really doesn't synergize with Frost at all. Might see play for Blood DKs or in PvP?
- A very thematic Runeforge that inherits the mechanics of an Unholy Artifact Trait from Legion:
. This is clearly also aimed towards our Unholy friends who benefit from this Runeforge at all times. We simply get the debuff 50% of the time when we've used our
cooldown. Even at 100%, the Runeforge isn't great so I'm 100% sure it won't see play for us.
- This rune has a very specific niche, leveling, and it does it well. I'd recommend using this rune while leveling in most content. Movement speed after every kill as well as a nice heal will keep you healthy and allow swift obliteration of your enemies. I'd ideally like to see the movement speed being slightly better. You often mount up after kills since the speed doesn't warrant you running to the next pack. It also has some value in end-game content where you can ensure killing blows on adds and mobs. That said, getting killing blows in raiding environments on adds is often
very
unreliable. Furthermore, in M+, you generally want the power spike as you engage a pack of mobs, not when it starts dying.
How Do AoE Target Caps Affect Frost Death Knight in Shadowlands Pre-Patch
Frost has received new target caps on a total of three abilities. This is both big nerfs (
) but also big buffs (
).
is now capped at 5 targets, a significant nerf to the ability on multiple levels.
Damage doesn't scale past 5 targets.
application isn't done as effectively (Previously spread to all targets with
equipped on your mainhand).
Fewer hits means fewer crit opportunities.
CD reduction now doesn't scale past 5 targets.
The damage reduction is in itself very significant. With a 2H equipped, the total damage of a
buffed
on 5 targets is only ~25% more than a single target
Critical Strike. With Dual Wield, the damage difference is 55% in
's favor. This will definitely open up for other talent combinations. Neither
nor
has an AoE cap.
application can be done with
instead, pushing this talent forward in the new meta!
and
now follow the sqrt-formula
The total damage output of an ability that scales with the sqrt-formula is the following:
damage ~ 1 + (n - 1) / sqrt(n)
Where n is the number of targets. The abilities deal the same amount of damage to a single target, but scale differently on subsequent targets. This used to be linear.
In our case,
will be somewhat better at 3 or fewer targets, equal at 4 and worse beyond.
will be significantly better at low target counts. It's only at 11 targets that it'll deal less damage than the BFA version. The overall output at 2 targets is
30% higher
compared to BFA. It looks to me like
will be the king of cleave in Shadowlands!
How Strong is Frost Death Knight in Shadowlands Pre-Patch?
The Frost Death Knight is looking strong in the pre-patch. We've got a lot more raid utility through
and our cleave was buffed with the target-scaling change on
as well as
becoming baseline. We'll lose a lot of power in Mythic + through the target-cap nerf on
, but we still have lots of uncapped AoE! Considering most classes also lose power in AoE, I think we're fine. Overall, we've pretty much only had additions to our kit and I feel like we'll look good in the pre-patch!
What are the Big Gameplay Changes for Frost Death Knight?
The largest gameplay change for us is definitely our ability to now wield 2-handed weapons. Sure, it doesn't impact the rotation at all, other than changing optimal talents. However, 2H gets much larger
hits but does see lower proc rates for
,
,
and
(more on this later). So both through the numbers themselves, but also through procs, you will get a different feel.
Always use
on your 2H weapon in the pre-patch
.
is quite significantly nerfed in the pre-patch, currently at -31% damage compared to BFA. This makes builds that rely heavily on
damage less rewarding. Once we hit shadowlands, we'll gain
at level 52 and
at level 58, significantly buffing its power.
How does the Loss of Corruption Affect Frost Death Knight in the Shadowlands Pre-Patch?
Losing Corruption is, of course, bad for us. It's most significant for the
build though. The build scales really well with secondary stats which is the reason why it's gained such popularity with people hitting high Corruption levels. Losing Corruption will, therefore, impact it more heavily compared to builds with
. The buff from 3 to 4 seconds does help and the pure single target damage output is still higher with optimal gear! Since we stacked a lot of haste, the build will also feel significantly slower in the pre-patch.
Builds with
will simply see a damage change without any change in feel. With a heavy focus on Mastery, the pace will be unchanged.
Best Talent Builds for Frost Death Knight in Pre-patch

Raids
is still very strong in the Pre-Patch and will be a competitive single target build. Dual wield is the play here, since you get a lot more
procs compared to 2H. This is due both to the higher frequency of
guaranteed Crits, but also because dual wield has two opportunities on each
/
hit to crit (at 20% crit chance, dual wield has a 36% chance to proc
on a natural
/
hit, 2H has 20%).
has a 0.5 second Internal Cooldown so you can't get two procs off a single
.
If you want to run
with 2H, simply swap to
.
This is likely the most viable build for 2H.
isn't great without the rank 2 frost damage on
and
doesn't synergise well with 2H at all. This leaves
as pretty much the only option.
A standard
dual wield build that we've been playing for a long time!
Mythic+
Mythic + is tricky due to the target cap nerf to
. We might see a resurgence in the use of
to aid in heavy AoE, but we'll see!
Best Rotation for Frost Death Knight in Pre-Patch
if you are specced into

Hey I'm just confused about the following:
"calling them to rain havoc on the battlefield with Frostwyrm's Fury and
Frostwhelp's Indignation
."
Does that mean that Frostwhelp's Indignation has been baked into the ability or it's just there because it's taking into account that azerite traits are still being used in prepatch? (So something that we'll eventually loose when stop using that system in SL)

My only hope for Shadowlands was that the Sindragosa build would die. I HATE that build with a burning passion, and vastly prefer Ice Cap. Just feels like BoS is the only viable frost build, at times...

Yesterday when i loged with my frost DK and made the talents/skills resat to my beloved DW Icecap build ( I hate breath because of restrictions in fights and almost imposible to maintain with my low lvl of pc hardwear) i went otside Boralus finishing a Horde Assault nearby and at the end when from the reward cashe poped up a two handed weapon i felt such a anger and frustration.
