Best Azerite Traits for Elemental Shaman
Based on simulations, logs, and analysis we have selected the best Elemental Shaman Azerite Traits, which should generally be prioritized. Keep in mind that the strength of Azerite Traits is based on the source item's item level, which can weight their value. This scaling will typically make a higher item level piece of gear better, even if it has less ideal traits.
Right now the best single power to go for is
. This trait synergizes extremely well with the talent
and the first point with that talent is significantly stronger than additional points in the trait as the
proc chance is only applied once. As a general rule of thumb
is still the trait to aim for even if you don't use
, but if you have 2 or more pieces with
on it that you're using then you should be running
with it.
Right now
is projected to be a distant second and
/
are right behind it! With the advent of two spec power rings, it is best to stack 3
traits if possible. Other options you can take include
,
,
, and
which all have fairly similar single-target values.
is slightly stronger than the other 3 on paper, but is less practical as sims assume that you hit the target in the back at all times.
For AoE, your top trait on paper is
. Alternative options include
, followed by
and
if you have the corruption for it. However, the only source of the two crit-based traits are in the same slot (the helm.) Finally, you have
which is of note as well.
has no single-target value, and as such is a little less practical than the others.
While
is looking to be a fairly strong trait, it's worth noting that you do have to deal with at a minimum
and
in order to have it active. However, if you're committed to utilizing that much corruption on your gear it can be a very strong option!
For Ring 2 Azerite powers, all of them provide a small bonus (from ~.5% of your total dps to ~2% of your total dps) and don't really change what pieces you aim for. As it stands, there is a slight difference in priority between single-target and AoE traits.
is still, despite the nerf to it, the best trait for both.
&
are 2nd & 3rd respectively for single-target while
&
are 2nd & 3rd respectively for AoE.

Unlocking Elemental Shaman Azerite Powers

. Each of those rings has various options of Azerite Powers to select, and you can pick one power per ring unlocked.
Depending on the source of your Azerite Armor piece, each ring will have a different
level required to be unlocked, for instance, a quest piece will be fully unlocked at level 9, while a raid piece may need level 25 or higher to be fully powered. To learn more about Azerite Powers, including how to replace them, check our in-depth

Elemental Shaman Azerite Power Overview
Helms, Shoulders, and Chests can interact with your
, granting you Azerite Powers. These powers can modify existing spells, provide buffs, deal damage or healing, as well as other effects.
Season 2 Changes
With the start of Season 2 and the coming of Battle of Dazar'alor, pieces that previously had four rings will now have five. This new ring comes before the Ring 1 and offer two different spec traits for each specialization. Note that Items from Uldir weren't updated with this change.
The powers below are divided into four rings where they can be found in your Azerite gear:
Ring 0
contains Spec powers and is the first section available on each item and will likely be available to select as soon as you acquire a given piece of gear, contain traits based on your class specs. This ring is a new feature, found on Armor starting with
Season 2
, and requires only
15 levels
on your Heart of Azeroth to be unlocked regardless of the gear.
Ring 1
contains Spec/Zone powers and is the second section available on each item and will likely be available to select as soon as you acquire a given piece of gear, contain traits based on your class specs and source of the trait.
Ring 2
contain Role powers, based on the roles your class can perform. It is only found on epic-level gear (340 or higher). Lower-level armor won't have this ring.
Ring 3
contains Defensive/Utility powers and is the last set of choices available in the piece;
Final Ring
always has
, which increases the item level of the armor piece it is in by 5 item level. The effect, in turn, increases the power from all previous rings.
Based on simulations, logs, and analysis we have selected the best Azerite Powers, which should generally be prioritized. Keep in mind that the strength of Azerite Powers is based on the source item's item level, which can weight their value. This scaling will typically make a higher item level piece of gear better, even if it has less ideal traits.
Keep in mind that tuning is subject to change, and power value is dependent on item level, so your own individual gear, talents, and options available to you can lead to different results. When in doubt, you can always sim your own character using
Raidbots
!
- The chance for
to proc is increased from 15% to 18% (tooltip currently says 20% which is incorrect,) and increases the damage of Lava Burst by X (increases as the item level of the Azerite piece increases.)
- When your
or
expires, it leaves behind a Spark or Ember Elemental to continue attacking enemies for 30 seconds.
-
deals X damage (increased by item level on your Azerite piece) instantly, has a 25% chance to cause your next
instant!
-
&
increase Intellect by X (increased by item level on your Azerite piece) for 15 seconds, which stacks up to 5 times.
-
damage (both direct damage and the DoT) increase the damage of your next
by X, (increased by the item level of your Azerite piece) stacking up to 20 times. As this is a buff that is placed on the player, not the target, having multiple flame shocks active will ramp this up significantly.
Below are the Azerite Powers that Elemental and Enhancement share:
- Note that internally this is flagged as an Elemental Power, but can be used by both specs. Dealing fire damage grant X critical strike for 12 seconds, dealing frost damage grants X Mastery for 12 seconds, and dealing nature damage grants X haste for 12 seconds (in all cases X is equal for all 3 stats and is increased by the item level of your Azerite piece.)
- Note that internally this is flagged as an Enhancement Power, but can be used by both specs. Casting
/
causes your Mastery to increase by X (increased by the item level of your Azerite piece) every second for 20 seconds. Note that this does work if you have
or similar debuffs, so you don't have to be the one to buff your raid AND you can benefit once every 5 minutes rather than once every 10 minutes!
There are other rings, those don't focus so much on your class and are more general damage, healing, or utility improvements.
Role Enhancing Powers
These traits can be found in the Role Ring. The options are chosen from the different pools shown below depending on what roles your class can perform: Tank, Healer or DPS. This set of powers will only appear on Azerite Armor that is
item level 340 or above
. The options available account for all roles that Shaman can perform, not only Elemental options.
Generic Role Powers
Azerite energy courses through you, reaching a high primary stat value and then diminishing down to a lower value primary stat, cycling every 6 sec.
Increases your Mastery and your Leech.
Increases your Haste and your Avoidance.
Increases your Versatility and your Speed.
Your damaging abilities have a chance to grant critical strike rating for 5 sec. This effect stacks up to 5 times.
Your damaging abilities have a chance to deal Nature damage to your target, and Nature damage to enemies within 3 yards of that target.
Shaman Role Powers
Casting your multi-target healing spell grants you Mastery for 10 sec. This cannot occur more than once every 30 sec.
When you go below 20% mana, you gain 5051 mana. Can occur once every 3 min.
Your healing spells have a chance to apply Blessed Portents for 20 sec. When the ally falls below 50% health, Blessed Portents is consumed and instantly restores health.
Your heals have a chance to apply Bracing Chill. Healing a target with Bracing Chill will heal and move Bracing Chill to a nearby ally (up to 6 times).
Your healing effects have a chance to grant the target additional healing every 2 sec for 12 sec. This effect doubles every 2 sec.
Your heals on targets below 35% health have a chance to heal.
Your healing effects have a chance to increase your Haste for 6 sec. Healing lower health targets will grant you more Haste.
Your damaging abilities have a chance to implant an Azerite Globule on your enemies. When an enemy collects 3 Azerite Globules, they explode, dealing damage to nearby enemies.
Your damaging abilities have a chance to deal Physical damage to the target. Gutripper occurs much more often against targets below 30% health.
Your damaging abilities have a chance to grant you Elemental Whirl, increasing your Critical Strike, Haste, Mastery, or Versatility for 10 sec.
Your damaging abilities have a chance to grant you 25 applications of Overwhelming Power. Each stack of Overwhelming Power grants Haste. An application of Overwhelming Power is removed every 1 sec or whenever you take damage.
Defensive Powers
These powers can be found in the Utility/Defensive Ring. The pool contains many Generic Defensive Traits, in addition to two class-specific Defensive Traits.
Generic Powers
When dealt damage greater than 10% of your maximum health, gain Avoidance and Armor for 10 sec.
When you take damage, heal. Cannot occur more than once every 6 sec.
When an enemy you harmed dies, you heal and gain Speed for 6 sec.
Increases your movement speed by a fraction of your highest secondary rating.
Every 30 sec, gain an absorb shield for 30 sec.
While no enemies are within 12 yds, you heal every 3 sec.
When you are surrounded by 4 or more enemies, gain a shield that absorbs damage. Cannot occur more than once every 15 sec.
Shaman Powers
While Ghost Wolf is active, heal every 1 sec.
When you cast Astral Shift and when Astral Shift ends, heal.
While Reincarnation is off cooldown, your maximum health is increased. While you are at full health, Reincarnation cools down 50% faster.
Center Power
The Center of every piece of Azerite Armor is the last Trait that you can choose and always grants 5 item levels to the Azerite Armor.
Increases the item level of this item by 5.
Azerite Power Rotation Changes for Elemental Shaman
While Azerite powers are not as impactful as Legendaries were in Legion, some still can change rotations substantially.
For Elemental Shaman, however, none of our class-specific powers impact our rotation at all!
Azerite Armor for Elemental Shaman
Here is a list of a few Battle for Azeroth pieces with Elemental traits to look for. Note that you can have the same traits in multiple pieces and their effects will stack up to three times. The power listing here is based on all items having an equal item level. Remember that item level can often be a larger increase than a better set of traits.
In many cases, it will be important for you to have a wide variety of pieces with those traits, as they can have different values depending on what content you are doing, like Raids, Mythic+ or PvP.
Here we'll list the pieces of gear you can get the most practical traits from the above sections. This means
, and situationally
for single-target, alongside
, and
for AoE and finally
,
,
for both! For the sake of brevity, I'll only be listing pieces that have
alongside one of the other traits listed here. There are however many additional pieces with just one of the listed traits that you can utilize as well.
Note that any Azerite pieces from dungeons here can be purchased from
for
which provides a way to obtain them as high as item level 475.

Finding Azerite Armor
Unlike other sources of gear, Azerite Armor isn't fully available in every game activity. While you can obtain it normally on non-keystone Dungeons and World Quests, there are only a handful of sources after that point for higher item level Azerite gear:
Periodic Emissary Caches, scaling with player item level up to 445.
Personal Loot Drops from The Eternal Palace, up to 445 on Mythic difficulty.
Personal Loot Drops from Ny'alotha, the Waking City, up to 485 on Mythic difficulty.
Weekly PvP Ranking Rewards, up to 475 at 2100+ (Duelist or higher rank)
Random or specific Azerite pieces from
, at the expense of
.
None of these sources are really farmable and Azerite Armor cannot Titanforge, so it's difficult to target specific bonuses; generally higher item level is Azerite pieces are better. The best way to guarantee desired traits is to complete the highest Mythic+ Keystone possible to receive as much
from your weekly chest in order to buy specific Azerite Armor pieces from
.

Both of them are significantly weaker for their 2nd point than for their 1st point.

Thank you for the overview!
Right now the best single power to go for is Igneous Potential! The bonus to Lava Surge is only applied once, even with multiple Azerite pieces that have Igneous Potential. Filthy Transfusion is right behind it, and surpasses it once you have at least one point in Igneous Potential. However, Filthy Transfusion is only on one easily obtainable piece of Azerite armor, so you'll generally want 2 points in Igneous Potential & 1 in Filthy Transfusion if you can get it.
This paragraph is fairly confusing...So is it still worth it to have 2 points in Igneous Potential, even though the bonus to Lava Surge is applied once? What about 3 points? Is Filthy Transfusion actually better than Igneous Potential? It may make more sense I suppose once I actually start playing in BfA.
