Welcome to Wowhead's Arcane Mage Arena PvP Guide, up to date for 9.2! In this section of the guide, we will cover each Covenant and its viability for Arcane Mages. We explain the usefulness of each Covenant to an Arcane Mage in PvP, allowing you to make the best decision for your PvP playstyle. Recommendations for Soulbinds will be explored for each Covenant.

Covenants
Covenants are a key part of the Shadowlands expansion. Selecting a Covenant gives you access to exclusive abilities - one that is Covenant-wide, and one that is specific to your class. You will also be given a choice of Soulbinds to enhance your power. For more information on Covenants, click here.
Soulbinds
Soulbinding is a new progression system that allows you to bind yourself to a significant member of your Covenant and share some of their power. Each Covenant has three potential Soulbind options with unique bonuses which can be powered up through a Soulbind tree. As you gain Renown with your Covenant, more rows of your Soulbind tree will be unlocked. Conduits add further possibility for customization, filling empty sockets with one of three bonus types. Conduits
Conduits are available in three types; Potency, Endurance, and Finesse. Potency Conduits increase your spell power, Endurance Conduits provide additional defense, and Finesse Conduits provide you with additional utility. Some Conduits are the same across classes but some are specific to your class. For more information on Conduits, click here.
Best Covenant for Arcane Mage in PvP
The best covenant for Arcane Mages is
Venthyr
. The covenant ability

has proven to be consistently strong, the Venthyr soulbinds are incredibly valuable, and its competitors are lackluster.
For Arcane Mages, most of the power to be found with a covenant is in the soulbinds and as such need to be taken into consideration when choosing a covenant. For Arcane, this means a very strong Haste rotating with Versatility proc, a casted fear in the form of
暗影之门
, and baseline interrupt reduction. Nothing can come close to Venthyr.
Arcane potency conduits are also extremely weak in PvP and you should always aim to get the most value out of Endurance conduits.
The Venthyr specific Covenant Legendary
堕落欢愉
that we get for free is very strong and only increases the viability of Venthyr for Arcane Mages over other Covenants.
Changing Covenants - Factors to Consider
The biggest advantage to being able to change your Covenant frequently will be utilizing different Covenants for specific matchups. Unfortunately in the Arena environment you are unaware of what you will be fighting when you hit the queue button. This means that the only time you will ever consider changing Covenants based on what you are fighting in the Arena is when you consistently queue into the same team/teams and
know
you can get an advantage.
Venthyr is so much better than the other three covenants you will never reasonably switch for the Arena outside of one potential exception. If you are fighting double melee compositions consistently and having trouble surviving when they train you down, swapping to Necrolord temporarily is absolutely a viable option. Not only did they buff the duration of
死神之躯
by 100% in 9.1.5 but it also boasts so much survivability it could be very effective against this specific type of matchup. Anything to help you survive!
Venthyr
Positives
Venthyr provides very good passive strength soulbinds and an area of effect Dragon's Breath-esque casted ability in the form of
暗影之门
.
With
Nadjia the Mistblade
,

an area of affect fear (that does not share diminishing returns with Polymorph) that can be used to help land said Polymorphs. At Renown 30

gives incredible value to Arcane, reducing the duration of your lockouts when you get kicked.
The added Renown 55 soulbind granting us 20% increased Versatility for 10 seconds after our

ends is also incredibly strong.

was buffed in 9.0.5 and now grants a charge of Clearcasting every time it procs and as such offers a strong alternative school to cast during your burst window on top of granting missile charges. This is the most effective active covenant spell across the options for Arcane Mages.
With the addition of double Legendaries in 9.2, the Venthyr covenant allows you to use quite a strong power in the form of

(along with another Legendary of your choice).

Nothing of significance to mention.
Kyrian
Positives
You gain access to a useful offensive ability on a short cooldown (assuming you can cast it) and strong defensively value via the elixirs gained from

is a strong 30 second cooldown offensive ability that you can use to supplement your burst as Arcane. Unfortunately, it is on the Arcane Magic school meaning it requires you to cast it at minimum, and at maximum along with Touch of the Magi. It is not realistic for this to always occur when you need it to.
Negatives
璀璨火花
while boasting incredibly one shot potential while paired with the Arcane Harmony legendary is unfortunately on the same school as all of our other spells, and Kyrian offers nothing on the form of mobility.
Night Fae
Positives
Night Fae offers very strong defensive soulbind options, a potential stun, increased mobility (to an already mobile specialization), and a slightly more valuable ability/kick bait in the form of
变易幻能
.

adds to the already mobile toolkit of Arcane Mage making it easier to kite melee DPS.

you gain solid damage and more movement speed that stacks with

also has the potential to provide a stun after using Soulshape as you can cast Mass Invisibility while in Soulshape. This soulbind route also gives you access to three Endurance conduits.

has some unique use cases as it is on the Nature school and something that enemies are willing to kick. If the full channel goes off, you can get some reduced cooldown on your valuable cooldowns. If it doesn't and you get kicked, it is an excellent way to get a stop out of the way so that you can go on to land Polymorph. Gaining an extra magic school in this way is very valuable to Arcane. It also seems as though
变易幻能
is currently reducing lockouts, although this will likely be changed. This means that if someone locks you out of Arcane school, you can cast shifting power to one effective tick reducing the lockout you just incurred by 4 seconds.
Negatives
Nothing significant, other than it does not provide any outstanding offensive benefits and you are not Venthyr meaning you lose out on

Necrolord
Positives
Absolutely none - do not pick this covenant as a Mage if you are seriously interested in PvP. This does not mean you cannot do well playing this covenant, but it is the worst.
Negatives

is not an ability you should use in the arena and the soulbinds are forgettable.
Playing as a Venthyr Arcane Mage in PvP
Signature Covenant Ability -
暗影之门
Door of Shadows is unique in the fact that its mobility tied to a cast, which might seem useless. However when combined with the

soulbind creates a deadly (albeit difficult to land) tool for crowd control. It will take time to get used to actually landing this on enemy healers, but even if you cast it and miss this ability has some great strengths. It is on a fairly short cooldown, enemies will want to kick it (giving you access to another school) and healers will be forced to constantly reposition. Even while playing the other soulbinds Door of Shadows can be used against melee as a "kick it or peace it" type of situation.
Class Covenant Ability -

You want to use this ability in preparation for a big damage "go" in order to stack the Siphoned Malice conduit and gain clear casting stacks in order to help you do damage. It is essentially a way to ramp up, preparing for the opportunity to do a lot of damage ahead of time and utilizing everything this ability has to offer. A separate school of casting, a dispellable debuff that will silence the target after 12 seconds, a strong damage buff due to the conduit, and free clearcast charges. Do not underestimate

Factors to Consider
It is relevant to keep in mind you can freely use any Legendary of preference with Venthyr, unlike Kyrian where you want to use Arcane Harmony.

Playing as a Kyrian Arcane Mage in PvP
Signature Covenant Ability -

Summon Steward will give you 3

s. It is a good defensive "Healthstone" with a long cooldown that you must drop combat to reset. Simply use a Phial if you are in danger of dying.
Class Covenant Ability -
璀璨火花
Radiant Spark is a strong offensive on a short cooldown that can line up with instant Arcane Blasts. It is not bad, however it is on the Arcane Magic school meaning it is going to be incredibly difficult to cast in most situations since Arcane Mages only have one school of Magic. That being said, if you find yourself in situations where you are able to completely free cast it is a good offensive option, however these will likely be few and far between.
Factors to Consider
You want to pair Kyrian with the Arcane Harmony legendary in order to land the large Arcane Barrage during a go with the 40% increased damage taken from Radiant Spark.

Playing as a Night Fae Arcane Mage in PvP
Signature Covenant Ability -

Soulshape is an incredible mobility tool that simply enhances an already mobile specialization. You can use Soulshape to position yourself closer to the enemy healer or escape enemy melee and follow it up with Blinks in order to land polymorphs or damage. Soulbind interaction can even turn it into a decent heal.
Class Covenant Ability -

变易幻能
is a very unique and diverse spell. It is on the Nature school giving Arcane access to another school of Magic or something for the enemy to interrupt. If the full channel goes off, you get some reduced cooldown on your valuable cooldowns. If it doesn't and you get kicked, it is an excellent way to get a stop out of the way so that you can go on to land Polymorph.
It also seems as though
变易幻能
is currently reducing lockouts, although this will likely be changed. This means that if someone locks you out of Arcane school, you can cast shifting power to one effective tick reducing the lockout you just incurred by 4 seconds.
Be careful when using this ability near a crowd controlled target as it has a fairly wide range of 18 yards and can break CC.
Factors to Consider
This is a very solid choice along side Venthyr and shifting power does not require any exemplary use to get value from. The way you set up your Mage does not change from Night Fae to Venthyr.

Playing as a Necrolord Arcane Mage in PvP
Signature Covenant Ability -
血肉铸造
Necrolord is not a covenant you want to pick as a Mage. This ability might have some use in 2v2 arena getting the shield up before an enemy Rogue crowd controls you, but realistically is not something you will ever gain any real value out of. Fleshcraft renders you immune to crowd control during the cast and for the duration of the shield once finished.
Class Covenant Ability -
死神之躯
If you are a Necrolord, the best way to use this ability is to cast it incredibly pre-emptively and gain 10% spell damage during your burst cooldowns. I will reiterate though - it is not good and I do not recommend playing this covenant. It is not worth casting

during an offensive go.
Factors to Consider
Similar to Kyrian, playing a caster composition as Necrolord would be the best way to take advantage of this covenant so you are both able to cast Deathborne and subsequent Arcane Blasts.
