How Does Wowhead Get Game Data? Wowhead Looter Allows Everyone to Contribute

Season of Discovery is live and you all are dominating the new content, including the "new" raid, Blackfathom Deeps. We, of course, have guides to both the raid and the loot you can get from it. Our Blackfathom Deeps Loot Guide details what loot drops and which boss it drops from... where we know that information; you may notice that there are a few gaps in the guide. Season of Discovery did not have a Beta or a PTR, so you may be wondering where we get that data. And the answer is, from you!
Wowhead has a little addon tool that you can install along with your addons:
Wowhead Client / Wowhead Looter
What this does is keep track of what you encounter and loot as you play the game. You can then upload all of that information to our database, allowing us to see where particular items dropped for you. Click the link above for more information.
Compiling your data with the data from everyone else who uploads their findings allows us to build additional information into our database. This leads to us being able to see not just where you got a particular item, but where everyone else found it as well, and what the drop rate might be. We then get a good picture of which bosses, for example, might drop a particular piece of loot, and how rare that drop might be. The more data we get, the more accurate these statistics. Using this data we can then share useful information through news articles and guides like these.
