General Tips and Tricks Leveling for Rogue Tank
Level up First Aid
- Unlike most classes who run out of mana, the only thing that slows down a rogue is running low on health. The First Aid secondary skill is great for fast healing between enemies. Every rogue should level up First Aid.
Gouge and Bandage
- By Gouging an enemy when fighting one versus one, you'll be able to get some self healing done by bandaging yourself. Ideally you heal before engaging an enemy and don't have to do this, but this can save you in a pinch.
Dual Wield & Mutilate
- Once you are level 10, you can train

at the Rogue Trainer. Dual wielding two daggers will allow you to use
, which is extremely powerful.
Use Eviscerate Instead of Slice and Dice
- At low levels and low character power, Slice and Dice just doesn't add too much damage. It is an all-star ability in other circumstances, but often not good while questing. Eviscerate finishing move or Between the Eyes if you have the rune will be your best way to dispatch enemies.
Leveling Viability for Rogue Tank
Rogues as a class are quite good at leveling, but tanking is specifically a role for playing as part of a group. If you setup your character as a rogue tank and try to level as a tank, it will be much slower at killing mobs. Tank roles are focused on mitigating incoming damage and generating threat, which are not super useful things for questing and killing enemies.
In Season of Discovery, the main difference between a tanking setup and a regular leveling setup is the runes, which can be easily changed. If you wanted to tank while using the DPS Rogue leveling build, that would be OK - just be sure to change your runes!
Rogues have high damage output and are not limited by a mana pool so there is no waiting around for mana to come back. This class is able to quickly dispatch enemies and also have low downtime between enemies - perfect for the massive grind that is classic era leveling.
Rogues lack any multi target damage abilities prior to unlocking Blade Flurry at level 30, so you'll want to focus on fighting only one enemy at a time. If you have to fight multiple enemies at once, be sure to use a defensive cooldown like Evasion.
Best Leveling Builds for Rogue Tank - Phase 3
While leveling our main damage is going to come from
, unlike in raids where finishing moves, poisons, and auto attacks account for large portions of the damage. All three talent trees have high impact talents early on that boost the damage of Mutilate, but as a Tank investing deeper into the combat tree to unlock

is a good idea. You'll want these cooldowns when your group accidentally engages too many enemies and you need the extra energy to gain threat on all of them.
The above build uses 31 talent points and can be done at level 40. It is setup specifically for tanking in Dungeons. As you level up I suggest putting your next 5 talent points into Opportunity in Subtlety then 5 into Malice in Assassination.
Once you can obtain it in Tanaris, getting
as your Wrist rune is great.
and
are great helm runes to use, but they are quite difficult to obtain and you will have to go pretty far out of your way while leveling. It is probably best to easily pick up
in the Hinterlands while leveling and worry about getting the stronger helm runes once you are max level.
Abilities to Skip While Leveling for Rogue Tank

Kick and Gouge are important to train rank 1, but you won't need to train rank 2 or any higher ranks of those spells. The higher ranks just do slightly more damage and you don't use those spells for their damage.
Rupture and Ambush should be trained for Horde rogues as they help with your poison quest, but you only need rank 1. Feint can be trained rank 1 if you want to tank, since Just a Flesh Wound transforms Feint into Tease.
Expose Armor, Backstab, Sinister Strike can all be skipped on the leveling process on your way to level 40. You simply won't use them, or only very rarely have a circumstance where you might want them.

Incase anyone is reading this and wondering when you can
start
leveling as a rogue tank, the answer is 15 for technical bare minimum, but you will want to be level 20 for Main Gauche and Poisons (though it might be tough to do the poison quest right at 20 without help).
It's.. rough. You need combo points to maintain the damage reduction from Just A Flesh Wound with Blade Dance, meaning your initial pulls in dungeons when the buff wears off will be dangerous. You also have the risk of needing to swap targets in order to get threat on new mobs because of your complete lack of aoe, but swapping targets causes you to lose all of your combo points. Unfortunately we also can't use combo points on dead targets, otherwise generating points on critters (though niche) would have been alright.

... HOWEVER. Now that season 2 of Season of Discovery is out, and some balance patches and tuning have been pushed out, it may be entirely possible to tank right at 15 without Main Gauche, if you can get a hold of Mutilate or Saber Slash early. This tank rune has had its threat increased since release, mutilate had its energy cost reduced by 20 and scales with backstab talents (and is a great combo point generator), and Saber Slash is a competent combo point generator with a bleed that can sustain alright threat when tab targeting. At level 20 with poisons, you will be able to proc poisons a lot quicker if using daggers for mutilate for more threat, at the expense of having to re-apply poisons a lot (creating downtime). Main Gauche is supposedly also having changes made to be energy efficient and generate more combo points, but word-of-mouth dictates that mutilate is very potent unless it gets some fine tuning after this post.
Mutilate generating 2 combo points and costing less than saber slash baseline is kind of nuts, and helps a lot with upkeep finishers on tanking (slice n dice, blade dance) and dps (envenom, when not using tank runes)
