Hello and welcome to the Ranged DPS guide for Classic World of Warcraft: I'm going to be telling you a little about what you can expect as a ranged dps, and then tell you a little about each of the classes, let us begin:

Introduction:
If you read my Melee DPS guide, you would know that the optimal raid comp (especially for horde) is a melee stack with upwards of 40 warriors; but, with that being said, it's important to have casters for the early game and eventually once spell power starts to really show up on gear there is a resurgence of casters, especially fire mages. Hunters have a special place amongst the other ranged classes and bring unique utility to the raid that I'll explain further in the Hunter section. As a disclaimer: while there are other classes that can technically stand at ranged and deal damage, I will be focusing on the most viable classes for a competitive raid environment: Mage, Hunter, and Warlock.
Mage
Best Races for Mage:
Gnome
- As a rule of thumb, I think any race that has an activated ability is worth considering and gnome is no exception. They have
开阔思维
which increases your total intellect from all sources by 5%, this is incredibly good for casters since it will scale as you get more gear; on top of that, they have
逃命专家
which is a very versatile ability and gives you game vs any class that relies on speed control as a win condition in PVP (mage, hunter, etc.). It's also worth noting that this works against any immobilization effects, and with Engineering being so popular you can count on almost everyone having
侏儒撒网器
.
Gnome is by far the best race for pvp and pve for both Mages and Warlocks so, unless you REALLY prefer the cast animations / appearance of Humans, I'd highly suggest going gnome for all intensive purposes.
PVE:
Troll
- I absolutely love Trolls, it's worth noting that they are uniquely placed as the only Race that seems designed purely for PVE; their signature racial is
which you have problem used some version of in a later expansion but, this version also allows for some interesting gameplay as the haste you gain is based on your health percentage. With some creative tactics, you can lower your own health for a larger gain off this ability.
PVP:
Undead
-For PVP/general use you have the classic Undead Mage, which if you weren't aware was one of the most popular race/class combos back in original Vanilla World of Warcraft.
被遗忘者的意志
is another one of the versatile activate racials that I mentioned previously in the guide talking about Gnome. Most notably Undead gives you a lot of game against warlocks.
Mage Resources:
Mana:
The primary resource for all casters is mana, with Mage being the most typical caster class, it's worth mentioning that a lot of mage gameplay puts an emphasis on mana management. Proper usage of spells like
唤醒
can really make the difference between an average mage player and a veteran mage player.
Key Abilities for Mage:
: Until you reach AQ 40, you'll spend a lot of time casting Frostbolts at your enemies. It's worth noting that for PVP it is quite popular to use rank 1 frostbolt for a speedy cast-time to proc
.
: Once you get enough gear and are doing appropriate content (in earlier raids enemies have a lot of fire resistance), fire spec will be the fotm and you will basically replace Frostbolt with Fireball.
: Mage is one of the more interesting classes because they access to the most un-capped aoe, meaning they have access to a plethora of spells that can hit as many targets that are within a certain range:
,
,
are also good examples of this.
Mage Consumables:
法力红宝石
: Mage can conjure their own consumables, as stated previously in the guide mana management is extremely important and will be what separates good mages from great mages.
特效法力药水
: On a separate cooldown than Mana Ruby, just another consumable to help you regain mana and continue casting spells.
献祭之油
: As I've stated in other guides and previously in this one, I would recommend that every class / spec should carry this item around as it is a free source of damage to boost the raid's overall dps.

Warlock
Best Races for Warlock:
Orc
- The great debate for Horde side will be whether or not you prefer Orc or Undead for warlock. With no true PVE race like Troll, you are left to pick between the benefits you will get in PVP and other non-raid content. Orcs are quite popular for having
坚韧
which is an incredible amount of passive stun resist. It's worth noting that Orcs get
which is relevant while leveling and can provide a bit of min/max in situations where your pet will be attacking.
Undead
- For PVP/general use you also have the choice of Undead Warlock, which gives you a little bit more control when it comes to the benefit your racial ability provides you.
被遗忘者的意志
is another one of the versatile activate racials that I mentioned previously in the guide talking about Gnome. Most notably Undead gives you a lot of game against warlocks.
Warlock Resources:
Mana:
Warlocks don't really struggle mana issues as much as other casters because they gain access to
.
Soul Shard
: Gained from killings mobs with
, these are used to cast various spells such as:
,
,
召唤仪式
, and many more spells including all of your summon pet abilities (except imp). This is where Warlock gets a lot of its flavor but, if you play lock be ready to farm a lot of these before each raid.
Key Abilities for Warlock:
: Similar to mage, Warlock is generally just going to be casting Shadow Bolt 90% of the time.
: From the Destruction talent tree, this ability can be used on the move and does a good amount of damage.
: Warlocks provide debuffs that benefit the raid, Recklessness is the most relevant because an optimal raid group will be a melee stack but, they also have
and
.
Warlock Consumables:
特效法力药水
: While warlocks have access to Life Tap to help them with mana, this provides just another way to help you regain mana and continue casting spells.
有限无敌药水
: Warlocks don't have access to any sort of personal threat reduction (no talents, no spells, etc.); so, in the event that you do pull threat, you can use this potion to drop off the threat table for 6 seconds and give the tank a chance to gain back threat.
献祭之油
: As I've stated in other guides and previously in this one, I would recommend that every class / spec should carry this item around as it is a free source of damage to boost the raid's overall dps.

Hunter
Best Races for Hunter:
PVE:
Night Elf
- Night elf has the highest base agility on Alliance side, making them in theory the best race for PVE on Alliance. They have
which notably isn't like live servers and CAN'T be used in combat to drop combat.
PVP:
Dwarf
- While Night Elf has higher base agility, Dwarf isn't by any means unplayable in PVE, in fact I would recommend Dwarf Hunter if you're rolling an Alliance Hunter this Summer. You won't really notice the lack of agility and you'll be very thankful that you have
石像形态
for PVP. Dwarves also have
which is worth mentioning for the early game, but the best two weapons in the games for hunters are crossbows so, you won't get insane value from this.
PVE:
Troll
- Similar to Night Elf for Alliance, Trolls have the highest base agility on Horde; but, unlike their Alliance counterparts, they also gain access to
which as I've said before is one of the only racials that you can activate to deal extra damage in PVE similar to how modern day racials work. Trolls also have
which is worth mentioning for the early game, unfortunately though the best weapons in the game are both crossbows so you won't get insane value from this.
PVP:
Orc
- If you're rolling a horde hunter for the first time this summer, I would suggest that you pick Orc: similar to how Dwarves don't miss that base agility on Alliance, Orcs gain access to
坚韧
which is widely considered to be one of the best PVP racials in the game. On top of this, Orcs have
which is incredibly relevant for hunters in both PVE and especially in PVP.
Hunter Resources:
Mana:
You usually won't have major mana issues as a hunter but, there are plenty of consumables to keep you at a healthy amount of mana throughout a raid night.
Ammo:
Hunters will need to ammo for all of their ranged abilities: if you use a bow or crossbow you will use arrows, and if you use a gun you will use bullets.
Key Abilities for Hunter:
: This is one of your main attacks and it's important to note that in Classic, casting Aimed Shot will pause your auto attack timer, so you will want to use this immediately after an auto attack for maximum damage.
: Another one of your main abilities, it's worth noting that you can use lower ranks of this ability if you are having mana issues.
宁神射击
: Throughout the game, bosses have Frenzy effects and you are REQUIRED to bring Hunters to your raid in order to dispel these Frenzy effects.
Hunter Consumables:
特效法力药水
: Mana potions are really the only potion that can be considered a damage increase for Hunters in Classic.
献祭之油
: As I've stated in other guides and previously in this one, I would recommend that every class / spec should carry this item around as it is a free source of damage to boost the raid's overall dps.

Professions For Ranged DPS
By now I think it's pretty common knowledge that you should have engineering on any character that you are bringing to a serious raid environment, it's the only profession that actually increases your damage directly giving you access to extra consumables and items.
Engineering
地精工兵炸药
: This is typically a required consumable by every member of the raid, this allows you to deal a large amount of AOE damage on specific pulls. It is worth noting that this is something you should be able to plan ahead in regards to when to use it during a raid (bigger pulls that require aoe damage).
致密炸弹
: Similar to Goblin Sapper Charge, this gives you a good way to deal aoe damage. It's worth noting that these are much cheaper than any other high level explosive and are very affordable to spam.
奥金机械幼龙
: Another item that can be used by anyone to increase raid dps, this item in particular is usually synchronized with other engineers in the raid, you can probably imagine what might happen if 40 engineers summoned a mechanical dragon at the same time.
安全传送器:加基森
and
空间撕裂器 - 永望镇
: Without the modern day portal hubs to help players travel around the world, Engineering allows you to pick up one of these two trinkets (depending on your specialization), these trinkets can be quite convenient when contesting world bosses, gathering world bosses, or simply getting to the raid faster.
Tailoring for Casters
大法师之袍
: Tailoring offers three robes (one for mage, one for priest, and one for warlock) that have bind on pick up recipes and require max level tailoring in order to make. These robes are very powerful and worth getting for the early game.
虚空法袍
: The Warlock version of the robe.
血藤外套
: The Bloodvine set gets released in Zul'Gurub and is good for casters, and even best in slot for warlocks. The 3 set is quite good and requires tailoring to actually gain the bonus.
血藤护腿
and
血藤长靴
are the other two pieces of the set.
Conclusions
The best three ranged dps classes are Mage, Warlock, and Hunter; while melee are the kings of Classic WoW, you definitely will need to bring some dedicated ranged players to the end-game content.
All of the Classic World of Warcraft rotations are relatively simple but, through proper mana management you will be able to separate yourself from an average ranged player, to an exceptional ranged player.
Engineering is absolutely a requirement for hardcore raiding and you would be playing at a disadvantage if you chose to not take this profession. It provides explosives, trinkets, and other quality of life items.
Thank you so much for reading this guide and I hope it was informational. Until next time,
-Krug.

Since it would be nice to bring at least one shadow priest to give those warlocks a nice shadow boost with that debuff perhaps some tips on playing them as well would be nice.

I'm wondering for mage if master of elements procs off of blizzard and do lesser ranked frostbolts or blizzards get resisted more? Does blizzard crit sporadically every second or does the whole channel crit/not crit? Thank you.

Can we get the typos fixed, please?
Under Gnomes: "I'd highly suggest going gnome for all intensive purposes." It's "intents and purposes", not "intensive".
Under Trolls: "which you have problem used some version of in a later expansion". I'm guessing that should be "which you have probably used"?
