Welcome to Wowhead's Hardcore WoW guide! This guide will give you all the information you need to hop in and enjoy the Hardcore Classic servers and answer all of the common questions you may have. If you're interesting in learning more about Hardcore in Classic WoW, check out our guides below --

What is Hardcore WoW?
Hardcore WoW is a new way to experience the game for Vanilla-Classic players where you have one life, and death means your run as a Hardcore character is over. Taking inspiration from Hardcore modes from other games, this challenge is designed to bring an extra layer of difficulty into the game, as well as rekindle the feeling of discovering the world for the first time again.
These servers will be a fresh start, meaning everyone will start from level 1 together on a brand-new server. For the first time ever, the server will also have all Phases and Content unlocked at launch, instead of staggered phase releases that we typically see with fresh servers.
The main appeal of these realms are the following key features that will not be available in other versions of the game.
Death is Permanent on Hardcore Realms
Resurrection is disabled on these realms, so even if you run back to your corpse or receive a resurrection from another player you cannot revive.
You are still able to exist as a ghost to communicate with your fiends, and handle things like guild management after you've died.
You're able to take advantage of Free Character transfers and move your dead characters to a non-Hardcore Classic Era realm after you've died.
Duel to the Death
New Feature:
"Duel to the Death" - As you would expect, this is a duel where if you lose, your character dies permanently.
Winning a Duel to the Death gives your character a trophy buff called a "String of Ears" and the stack on this buff increases by 1 for every duel you win
Hardcore Realm Rules
Several changes have been made to the core gameplay rules to facilitate a better gaming experience on these Permadeath Servers.
Buff and Debuff Limits
Buff and Debuff Limits removed
Originally, there was a Debuff limit on bosses set to 16, meaning only 16 different debuffs could be up at one time on an enemy target. This is being lifted completely, making many previously un-viable classes much more interesting. Affliction Warlocks, Shadow Priests, and many other classes can use all of the spells in their spell book, without having to worry about the debuff limit.
There are also no limits to the amount of Buffs you can have on at once, which is very good news for Restoration Druids.
Dungeon Limitations
All dungeons have a 24 hour lockout timer, similar to Heroics in other versions of Classic.
Players that are much higher level than the creatures they're fighting cause those monsters to give very little experience to other members of the group, similar to the Season of Mastery changes.
Level 60 players will not be able to enter dungeons with players under level 60 for dungeon content.
Monster Leashes Adjusted
Creatures now leash and reset when leaving the area or zone they are engaged in
The goal is to stop high level players from "kiting" high level monsters to lower level areas, and should not infringe on Hunters kiting elite monsters for quests.
Bubble Hearthing Removed
Paladins will be unable to use their Hearthstone while under immunity effects such as Blessing of Protection, Divine Protection, or Divine Shield.
Limitations on PvP
Players are no longer flagged by attacking other players, you must type "/pvp" to flag yourself.
Players are still flagged by attacking enemy faction NPCs even if you haven't typed "/pvp".
Battlegrounds are disabled on Hardcore realms, however players will have the option to participate in premade Wargames. Death is still permanent in these modes.
Gameplay Disruption Will Not Be Tolerated
Blizzard has taken a firm anti "griefing" stance on Hardcore Realms, meaning any deliberate action to hamper or significantly impede other players in the game will be taken very seriously.
This includes any action from killing quest NPCs, intentionally causing the death of other players, or forcing non-consensual PvP flagging, to name a few examples.
They further clarified that "report bombing" or attempting to get an account actioned for false reasons will be met with equally harsh penalties.
Rewards for Hardcore WoW
There are some unique rewards for playing on the Hardcore Classic realms. The rewards are primarily focused around the Duel to the Death feature, and Soul of Iron which is a returning reward from Season of Mastery.
String of Ears
As we mentioned earlier, defeating another player in a Duel to the Death will award you with a buff known as 'String of Ears' that will show you how many duels you have won on that character
There are limitations on this reward, such as characters must be atleast level 19 to give an ear, and if you and an opponent are too many levels apart you cannot earn an ear from them.
Soul of Iron
The Soul of Iron buff from Season of Mastery will be returning to Hardcore realms. To acquire the buff, Blizzard has added two in-game High Elf Chroniclers in Ironforge and Undercity:
Chronicler Fero - Library in Ironforge, in the back of the Hall of Explorers
Chronicler Morta - Apothecarium in Undercity, near the Herbalism trainer
Players whose characters have never died before can ask to receive the
Soul of Iron
buff, which you can request from these NPCs. If you've accepted the challenge, you will also receive a new spell in your spellbook called "Soul of Iron" which is a
/flex
emote that turns you to stone.
If you don't die, when you mouse over the Soul of Iron buff on your buff bar, you'll see the message "Never Known Defeat". Dying with the Soul of Iron buff will immediately give you the "Tarnished Soul" debuff and your Soul of Iron will physically spit out of your corpse, quite a sad sight. The Tarnished Soul debuff reduces all of your stats by 1%. Dying additional times does not increase this percentage.
You can return to the Chroniclers to ask to have the Tarnished Soul debuff removed, but this does not restore the Soul of Iron. Once lost, you cannot get it back on the character. However, you can ask the Chroniclers to re-apply the Tarnished Debuff in a reminder that you tried.
You may get changes or additions to your Soul of Iron buff by making it to 60 or defeating certain bosses without ever dying. The titles are added to your Soul of Iron buff and include additional spell effects around your character in addition to turning to stone.

Best Classes for Hardcore WoW
So you’ve decided to take the dive into Hardcore, but what class to play?
Fortunately, most classes are considered anywhere from “Good” to “Excellent” for Hardcore, with the only class that is universally considered “Bad” or “Hard” being
Warrior
, due to their low amount of escapes, heavy gear reliance, and inability to fight multiple mobs at once. Every other class has much less reliance on gear and more options to escape bad situations.
Due to every class but
Warrior
being "Good" at hardcore, tier lists are not overly useful, so we will list the classes based on what your goal with the game mode is.
I want to have the easiest time reaching level 60...
You would enjoy playing
Rogue
,
Paladin
,
Mage
,
Warlock
, and
Hunter
.
Rogues
have tons of tools such as

,

, and

that can make them extremely difficult to kill. If you ever use your cooldowns, simply logging off until they’re off cooldown can make you effectively immortal.
Paladins
have the best raw survivability in the game, between their healing spells such as
, and being one of the two classes able to wear

. If this wasn’t enough, they have access to spells such as
圣盾术
that allow them to be immune to all damage for 10 or more seconds. This survivability makes them a great choice for Hardcore.
Mages
are masters of control. Spells such as

can easily turn the tides of any dangerous situation. Going down the Frost Talent Tree, you also gain spells like

that further increase your survivability.
Warlocks
and
Hunters
both have pets that can take the brunt of damage, allowing you to quest in comfort through Azeroth. Tools like

and

also allow for easy escapes if they’re needed.
I am looking for a Challenge...
Your best bet for a difficult playthrough is
Warrior
. They are heavily gear reliant, and with the gear scarcity in hardcore, they can have trouble even killing green level mobs at times.
However, if
Warrior
is not your cup of tea, you can still increase the difficulty by doing personal challenges, such as doing every elite quest. Hybrid classes such as
Druid
,
Paladin
,
Shaman
, and
Priest
are excellent for this due to their large amount of Crowd Control and Self Healing, allowing you to take on challenges that other classes normally cannot, while still creating a more difficult gameplay challenge.
I want to be useful for Endgame Content...
For Endgame Content, due to the nature of players dying and taking breaks regularly, every class is always in need. The guilds are revolving doors of players. However, the following classes tend to see the most demand regardless of the current roster standings.
Dwarf Priest
- Dwarf priests have a unique racial,
, that is used in nearly every raid to help mitigate mechanics and ensure the tanks can properly tank bosses like Onyxia when they send out raid wide fears. There will always be a demand for Dwarf Priests.
Paladin
- Paladins are the reason Alliance are considered the better faction for endgame raiding on Hardcore. Blessings are immensely powerful tools, with
giving your tanks much needed health and mitigation, and
keeping your dps’s threat in check.

can be used to save party members who accidentally get aggro and are all around amazing healers. However Paladins are considered boring to level by many, so there are rarely many at the endgame despite being one of the easier classes to level.
Warriors
and
Rogues
- Warriors and Rogues deal the highest damage of any classes at end game, as well as warriors being the best tanks. You cannot go wrong with either of these classes and they are desired for any group.
Shaman
- Since Totem buffs are only group-wide in Classic, most Horde raids want 7-8 Shamans in order to have one in each group. Their Totems pack a lot of power - from
Totem Twisting
between

if needed) for melee, to laying
for casters, and pre-emptively placing

for all groups as Horde's
since they don't have Dwarf Priests. If you go Shaman, you should have no issues being brought to a raid.

Best Professions for Hardcore WoW
There are two profession combos that truly shine in Hardcore WoW,
Mining
and
Engineering
or
Herbalism
and
Alchemy
.
Engineering
has amazing tools such as

that can greatly improve the survivability of your character.

specifically are an amazing tool that give classes a way to escape situations they otherwise wouldn’t be able to.
Alchemy
gives the benefit of never running out of potions, so you can use them liberally. As well as nice stat boosts such as

etc.
The general recommendation is to do
Engineering
if you are unfamiliar with the dangerous quests in the game and may need the extra escape tools, where as
Alchemy
is amazing to give you stat boosts to feel consistently stronger if you aren’t worried about being caught off guard by scary monsters.
If you have access to gold on your character, it would always be recommending to go
Engineering
as you can purchase potions and elixirs from the Auction House as needed, where as
Engineering
items require skill to use.
Crafting Professions
Tailoring
,
Leatherworking
, and
Blacksmithing
can be fun professions to do, nothing is quite as immersive and rewarding as crafting your own gear, however, it is very rare the items created from these professions are better than quest rewards unless you go far out of your way to gather them early. Even then, the stat bonuses would be less than those gained from
Alchemy
.
As such, they are not recommended from an optimal play style point of view, but are still fun professions to do if you want a change of pace.
Special Mentions and Exceptions
It is highly beneficial for rogues to go
Herbalism
and
Alchemy
as they need herbs for

.
Skinning
can be a great way to make extra money early game, just drop it for the profession you actually want around level 10 so you don't fall too far behind.
It is highly beneficial for
Warriors
,
Rogues
, and
Paladins
to go
Blacksmithing
and
Mining
early due to

劣质平衡石
. When your weapon deals 3-6 damage, a +2 damage increase is actually massive and can help your survivability greatly.
Additionally, casters may want to go

Enchanting
early to secure a wand via

Just to ask a question, wouldn't the AH be disabled? As part of the challenge is not being able to buy/use gear that's found on there or is that a community imposed rule?
