thinking ahead really helps, these are fire elementals, bring along some FR gear. at 205FR they arent even doing half as much as normal.

While the highest drop rate for Motes is still on the Elemental Plateau, the 2.0.7 patch nerfed the respawn rate on these mobs. Pre-patch there used to be at least one elemental active at all times. Each time you killed one, another one spawned at any of the 20'ish spawn locations. You could easily have 4 or 5 people farming there at once, and not have much downtime. Post-patch, the last mob killed doesn't auto-spawn a new one. This results in substantial downtime with multiple players camping the area. One player alone can farm almost continuously, but 3 or 4 players make grinding here very difficult and slow. This should drive up demand for Primals, and also have the added effect of more PVP to control who gets to farm, but will make farming mroe difficult.
Where before I could farm 4 primals and hour, while two or three other people were also camping the same fire elementals; I now am farming with one other player and both of us are facing downtime as we wait for respawns. And only getting 2.5 - 3 prinals per hour.

Vile Fire-Souls (

) do not drop motes at the rate advertised. I suspect the rate looks as high as it does due to the low recorded kill account. I just added about 200 kills to the database so the drop % should go down.
For the record, you can expect Vile Fire-Souls to drop *1* primal per hour -- though you won't have competition for these mobs so it may even out with the elemental plateau unless you have the plateau to yourself.

But I would suggest farming the Bogg/ Starving Bogg Lords and Fungal /Starving Fungal Giants because they are all very close. - The Spawning Glen (SW Zangarmarsh) and East of there is the Quagg Ridge - Very similar drop rates on all 4 mobs that I pointed out, 18.2 to 18.8 -

By far the most commonly found mote. This is dropped in almost every zone and can be easily farmed anywhere. But there may be a few exceptional areas just because npcs that drop them are close together, non-elite, and easy to kill. Here's one spot in a few that are exceptional:

They can be mined quite often in Fel Iron Deposits, and imo the place with the most mobs is Shadowmoon Valley, in the center where the 'green' stuff is on the map. Even if there is 3 or more people farming them, there is enough to keep respawning. Best to travel on your flying mount, as there is a few mountains around.
4-5 Primals per hour here as a rogue on average, could be more if better at grinding.

You should also keep in mind that drop rate depends on the level of the mob.
For instance the Searing Elemental lvl 68 in Blade's Edge Mountains has good droprate. The lvl 67 of it don't seem to drop any Motes of Fire at all.

Forge Camp Wrath in Blade's Edge Mountain.
I've yet to bumb into anyone else farming at this spot, minus a couple of times ofcourse - but theres always someone Northeast Blades and Plateau, and this Forge Camp is almost always empty.
There are 9 mobs (Fel Rager,

) and they are located in 3 "packs", draining from a sort of an pylon. You can stand in them and not get attacked before you attack them, so you can easily stand there and grind them without any danger of pulling more than 1 mob or nasty demons & hounds.
Droprate is nice aswell, this is the spot for me until it gets overcrowded as other nice spots in the past. If you're grinding, go check it out =)

Have been farming these for quite some time now in NE blade's edge (skald). On 500 kills I got 264 motes = around 53% drop rate

As of the latest patch many of the spots have been removed or nerfed. For reference it took me 33 kills on the elemental platuau to make a primal tonight, which is about a 1/3 drop rate. Not too bad, but if it's farmed it is nearly useless.

Blizzard has officially made this the most stupid thing to farm in game. I am in a "medium" population server and there are always at least 6 people in the Elemental Plateau and 6 in Skald.
My advice? Farm something else and buy these in the AH.

hey guys i've found the best place is blade's edge not very many people on dark iron and motes sell for 2.5 g also last time i farmed i think it was a hour or 2 but got almost 4 primal and about 3 essence

I don't understand why they made it so there are extemely many items that require like a 1000 Primals to make, and so small areas to get it. The best places to get things are places where it feels cramped with 1 or 2 people...farming in itself is bad enough, but having to wait forever and do kill stealing to get kills? :-/

As a miner - you can farm motes of fire pretty easily... just mine Fel Iron Deposits... I get roughly 1, 1.5 primal per play session without even 'hunting' for deposits.
At least gives me a reason to revisit Hellfire Peninsula every now and then ;)

I was farming em recently and it was shocking how many times i got ganked at the Elemental Plateu.
So I figured i'd go try somewhere else...
I found a great spot in Blade's Edge at the crystal ridge thingy wich is only accesable by Flying Mount (its the one furthest west) at Forge Camp: Terror there's a bunch of fire elementals that is easy accesable and have a decent drop rate... they usually drop 2 but they occasionally drop 1 (bummer) but noones farming there... and dont mind the infernals and other demons they dont have any aggro rate and can easily be avoided with normal mount.
PS! dont use Flying mount cuz of the flak cannons that shoot u down ASAP

I tend to shy away from Elemental Plateau because of the fact that there are usually people there farming it all, and not just for motes of fire.
For motes of fire I tend to go to Skald. There's a lot of elementals there, and they're fairly packed in tight. However, the place is also farmed pretty much 24/7. It's a good thing you only have to kill the imps everyone ignores for that quest from Evergrove, but I digress.
The pro (and con, to some) to Skald is that you can AoE farm this place for the motes. So to you classes who are capable of that, this may be a great place to farm but you're probably going to piss off everyone else around you by farming that way.
As others have mentioned, the Fel Pits in Shadowmoon Valley is another good place. Some might say they're too spread out or there's too much lava, but in my mind that's exactly the point. This fact is a major deterrent for AoE farmers. So, for classes not capable of AoE farming, you can go through this place relatively quickly (especially if you have epic flying).
I am not saying that (insert AoE class here)s should go to Skald and everyone else to the Fel Pits. Just simply some food for thought.

Maybe I'm just hallucinating but I think the rate at Skald went down recently (at least last patch, been a while since I needed a Primal Fire for anything really). Spent about an hour at Skald earlier today on my Mage just flattening the Elementals there and got like 1 Primal total, and I know before that would've net me around 3-4. Maybe I just had an afternoon of bad luck, but a few people in guild and other friends said they noticed something similar.

I think above poster is right, Skald really seems nerfed. Mobs aren't spawning in the same spots they used to and it seems like forever for them to respawn. Time to find a new spot. x.x

Lately on my server (Bronze Dragonflight EU) it seems that every single area that drops motes of fire is farmed to death by bots. It's a sad state of affairs but it seems that the only way to obtain a reasonable amount of them is to farm anything else, sell it, and use the gold to buy Primal Fire on the AH - thereby most likely supporting the people running the bots in the first place.
And this is probably unlikely to change, it appears very much that Blizzard is trying to throttle the in-game economy by limiting the amount of Primals (which are part of almost any useful crafting recipe post-BC) that are obtained on any realm in a given amount of time. Maximum amount of motes per day = total number of mote-dropping mob spawn points * respawn timer. And I don't think Blizzard cares at all whether these are brought into the economy by genuine players or bots.

One thing no one has really mentioned is the level difference between Skald and EP. EP is 70-71 and Skald is 67-69 i think. I prefer skald partially because its less farmed and partially because they are so much easier to kill. I tried SMV once, and maybe it was just luck because I didnt stay long, but i got 1 mote out of about 25 kills. Also, as a caster the SMV elementals are the only ones out of the 3 places that will shoot fireballs at you.

Does anyone know of an INSTANCE where these may be farmed SOLO by a well-geared 70? The competition over farming mobs is the thing I hate the most about this game, and I would rather farm them solo even if it's fewer drops per hour.

Is there any mobs that deal physical damage and drops motes of fire? As in Infernal or something like that? 'cause I'm a Prot Paladin and I can't grind any spelldamage-mobs :S

I'd have to agree with some of the posters here at Wowhead about the making of Primal Fire.
The best place to farm these little pests that's so needed for so many things are by far Skald, as it's fairly easy to be the only one farming these on my server.
So, for people wanting to farm, check out Skald every once in a while, as it's a better droprate per hour compared to the newly nerfed Elemental Plateau.

Since 2.4, by far and away the best place to farm fire motes is off the Incandescent Fel Sparks at the Throne of Kil'jaedon in Hellfire Penninsula. The respawn rate is super fast and I'm getting about a 40 -50 % drop rate (as sometimes they drop 2 per mob)
There is a sweet spot where 3 sparks spawn with no demons nearby. I will let yo discover exactly where ;)
I farmed 20 motes in as many minutes.
Expect fire motes and primals to drop in price on the AH now...

The mobs in Skald in BEM also known to drop them fairly often. Also Angered Nether-Wraith, which only spawns when someone creates a Spellcloth, is guarenteed to drop 4 motes from two different types, and Fire is the one which drops often.

dunno but after patch 2.4.3 Searing Elemental in BEM droped me 0 motes from 10 kills and after 26kills on Fel Sparks at the Throne of Kil'jaedon in Hellfire i got 1 primal fire only i think they nerfed it alot...

I had to get 8 Primal Fires for my turbo charged flying machine so I looked here for good places to farm it.
I can easily say that the Incancdescent Fel Sparks at the Throne of Kil'jaeden in hellfire peninsula are the best mobs to farm motes of fire at level 80. I tried Elemental plateau at first, but after doing 3 aoe pulls I had to wait for over 5 minutes for them to start respawning again ... waste of time.
However, at the throne of Kil'jaeden there will always be fel sparks to kill. It seems like they are forced to respawn if all of them are about to die. The drop rate seemed to be the same as Elemental Plateau but you have 0 downtime (apart from the little flying between each mob). Just bind your flying mount button to a easy to reach key and start killing those fel sparks. I had my flying mount bound to the middle mouse button while I was at this so I could mount easily and fast after each mob.
I got my 8 primal fires in about 20 minutes at the throne of kil'jaeden.

Agree on the Fel Sparks at the Throne of Kil'jaeden in Hellfire Peninsula (61,25 and farther north). However, be sure to go as an herbalist - while getting the 8 primals for my engineering helm I also picked up 46
nightmare vines
that grow in the area scattered around the elementals, which are stupidly expensive on my server (frostwolf). Also got 2 greens, 2
essence of fires
and a couple of stacks of nethercloth.

Quite good drop rate and they usually appear in pairs so I recommend farming these guys, only counterpart is the spawn rate which is quite slow for 85's who can clean the area in 1 min and have to wait for the respawn for around 5 min.

It really depends on what level you are grinding them. If you are lvl 66, like I was, Nagrand and Hellfire North is to troublesome. I accepted a lower droprate in the north of Blade Edge Mountains.
The rate was still quite fair and I needed them to make the adamantite breast for blacksmithing, being between 345 and 350 skill, which is the worst level to manage with BS imho.

155 Incandescent Fel Sparks gave me 57 motes of fire. I was farming these to make an ebon shadowbag, which is now a 20 slot bag. Even though netherweave drops like candy, I think getting everything for a frostweave bag is slightly easier.

There's also a pretty good spot in Blade's Edge that's flying only. It's northwest of Thunderlord at a Forge camp in the mountains. You can spot it by the giant elite Fel Reavers and large dogs roaming the area. The Fel Reavers don't move, and the dogs don't path terribly close to the fire elementals usually.
There are 3 camps of 3 elementals. Usually by the time you clear the third camp, the first camp has spawned. If it hasn't, you can just kill a few dogs for some Motes of Shadow or something.
Still, Elemental Plateau is still probably the best, but if you spot 3-4 people waiting on Fire Elementals, Blade's Edge is probably a faster spot.

This is easily the most annoying mote to farm. Elemental Plateau, as many have said, is practically farmed around the clock, so now the Skald is getting farmed alot too. You've also got Basilisks and imps to contend with so while you're trying to get those guys off your back, someone will swoop in and tag the elementals you're after. It really is quite competitive. Adding to the craziness, there's 2 quests there, so as you can imagine it can get quite crowded at times. I've found it's best not to stick around for too long. If it's looking like you're going to have to compete for motes, leave and do something else, then come back when no one is farming it. If that doesn't work for you, find something else you're better at farming, sell, then buy the primals you need.

I found good drop rate at the 'Throne of Kil'Jaeden' in Hellfire Peninsula. Got 2 primals while just doing daily quests up there. Just watch out for the elites.

Best Place to farm these it seems, is the Elemental Plateau in the North East Corner of Nagrand.
Theres Elementals of each type there, so pretty decent spot for Motes of Earth, Air, Wind, Water, and Fire.
Drop rate is abou 35%-40% for Motes of Fire - only issue is the sheer amount of people up there farming them.
Oh and you need a flying mount / flight form to get up to the Plateau.
Motes of Fire sell for 1.5 gold on my server, a Primal Fire (10xMotes) sells for between 25 - 30 gold. Amazing what people will pay to not have to farm :D

This works best if you have a flying mount, but these guys have a great drop rate. Go farm Vile-fire Souls at Forge Camp Terror in Blade's Edge Mountains.

The best place I've found to farm these is at Kil'Jaedens throne, in the flight access only area of Hellfire Peninsula. There are two daily quests here as well, which you should always do, because on average, just by doing the dailies, i get 5 motes of fire.
The spawn rate on the Incandescent Fel Sparks in the area is fantastic. The other great thing, is that in order to complete the daily that goes with these mobs, you don't actually have to kill the sparks (except for the first kill), you just have to be near one when it is killed.
So this reduces the amount of ganking. Most people out there just want to get their daily done. I spent an hour and a half out there last night, and got 6 primal fires. The only reason it took this long, was because I was flying around looking for people whose little "fel spark companions" needed boosting. Then I would land near them, and if they were fighting something else, I would start pulling the fel sparks near them, so that when I killed the fel spark, it would help the person next to me finish their daily. (This explanation might not make sense unless you've actually done the dailies out there)
I was able to grind motes of fire better than anywhere else I've ever tried, and I managed not to piss anyone off in the process :) People kept whispering me, asking where my fel spark companion was, and I'd tell them I was grinding for primals, but didn't want to screw everyone else working on their quests, and I explained what i was doing, and every single person said "Thanks! That's really nice of you"
You can still farm for mats without being an ass! Hurrah!

(As a level 70, affliction warlock)
Tools used were my Voidwalker, a good supply of Clefthoof Ribs, (or any 7500 health restorative food), a good supply of Purified Draenic Water, my Fel Armor up, a Soulstone at the ready, quick access to the Drain Soul and Consume Shadows spells and 2 identical macros that were programmed as follows:
/castsequence reset=24 Curse of Agony, Corruption, Unstabe Affliction, Shadowbolt, Life Tap, Drain Life, Drain Life, Consume Swadows
(I created 2 so that I can have one at the ready while the other is in cool down.)
The area I farmed is the Western side of the Throne of Kil’Jaeden in Hell Fire Peninsula. That area is only accessible with a flying mount and is a short flight NW from Thrallmar. This area is part of the level 70 daily quests and can get crowded. But the mobs also respawn at a very fast rate. The West side is easiest because it is furthest away from a quest giver who is camped on the NE side. (Less competition in killing the mobs.)
When I start a period of farming, I fly to the cemetery located at: 64.23. I get my Fel Armor up, get a Soulstone active, get another one in the ready and summon the Voidwalker. I then head NE on foot to the blacked area down on the valley floor.
A quick overview of the strategy pattern. I basically farm back and fourth in a roughly a “C” shaped pattern along the Western side of Kil’Jaeden. If all goes well, I kill the same 9 Incandescent Fel Sparks, (which drop the motes of fire), and the same 2 Wrath Heralds over and over again. The Fel Sparks are pretty much strait forward kills. The Wrath Heralds are easier to kill but if they stop their attack and their hands start to flame, get out of the way because they are about to unleash a fire spell which will quickly drain away your health and can kill quickly.
As I go down to the valley, I hug the Southern wall heading East, (basically, hang a right), and stop at around 66.21. At that spot I stop, turn and face ENE. Behind me in the corner of that area will be 2 Fel Sparks and a Wrath Herald on patrol which I will deal with later. Just don’t be so close as to aggro them. In front will also be 2 Fel Sparks and a Wrath Herald on patrol. I pull and kill the Wrath Herald first. His patrol is quite long in distance but he moves very quickly. Then I pull the Fel Sparks, one at a time and kill and loot them as well.
I then turn and go back to 66.21, pull and kill Fel Spark #3. If Wrath Herald #2 is running towards that area, I wait till it is in range and pull and kill it. If it is running away from that area, I go to 68.20, aggro Fel Spark #4 and kill it. If Wrath Herald #2 is still alive, I will either kill him en route along that wall or stop at 67.19 and wait till it is in range and kill it. I then continue along that West side and pull and kill Fel Spark #5. When I get to the end of that wall and turn to the left, Fel Spark #6 will be right in front of me where I pull and kill him.
I then go up the little hill, all the while hugging the wall on my right, stop at 66.16 and pull and kill Fel Spark #7. I then go up the little hill, stop at 65.16 and pull and kill Fel Spark #8.
When standing there, there are 2 green rivulets on the ground in front of me. I go up the hill along the side of the 2nd one and stop at the top edge. To the Right will be Fel Spark #9. (NOTE: DON’T GO ANY FURTHER! The spot I stand at is 64.3-17.1. Any further and you risk drawing the attention of Doom Lord Kazzak who is a level ? elite and will surely 1 shot you!) Fel Spark #9 is at the foot of the Doom Lord’s throne but I find that I can kill him easily as long as I keep my distance from Kazzak.
After that, I retrace my footsteps back the way I came. Then rinse and repeat as long as necessary.
On a totally random run, the drops of Motes of Fire per 100 kills were as follows:

The time it took to do the 100 kills with no other competition in that area was 1hr, 45min.

Forge camp terror (my favourite area for farming motes of fire) is now a warzone since last patch, dont risk flying over it cuz odds are you will get shot down and land in a world of hurt, elemental plateau is overcrowded so im just off to shoot myself!

I was the first on my server to discover the Elemental Plateau and by this point it is just over camped constantly. I always see 4 or 5 people there fighting for mobs.
My new favorite spot to farm these is at Forge Camp: Wrath in Blade's Edge Mountains. Nobody ever goes there and the droprate is on par with the elemental plateau. Just don't aggro the wrath reavers. :-/

Farming on Elemental plateau for motes of fire, forget it. Spawn of 5 with 4 (Horde and Alliance) farmers. This with a 33% drop rate. I don't know if blizzard ever tried putting together a Spellfire Robe but 16 Primal fire is needed. Then 14 Spellcloth which each requires also 1 Primal fire to make. That's 300 motes of fire.
So Blizzard, by removing farm-ground for these items, make sure you replace it elsewhere!

hai - Look - if you are soooo desperate to farm these and find it very hard as a mage (I know with spellfire tailoring you are likely to be fire specced) I suggest you respec frost for a week and get up real early - 5 or 6 AM - to go to the elemental plateau - I find this to be the prime time for drops and lack of people farming (because they are all 10 year old kids usually after 12)
Within around 1 hour to 2 hours I got 7 Primal fire and 3 primal airs farming on one side of the plateau (as both a mage and a hunter) - Dont say it is over farmed cos it is only over farmed at the times people are online the most - the early bird gets the worm first :)

Farming these blows. I need 68 primal fire to complete the three piece speciality set. That means 680 motes of fire. I am looking having to kill approximately 1500 fire elementals for this. Krazy stuff.

Yes, You DO need to fly to get to that area. But the elementals there have about 50% drop rate per mote. You may also fish for mostes of water there in the water elemental area.

I've also noticed this, drop rate was decent before, getting 5 primals in a couple of hours, now lucky to get one mote on 10 kills.....

these mote of fire is still easily farmed if you're a mage, u can jus go to blades edge mountain coords 72,20 where the seaing elementals are. once there u jus need to use dampen magic and then pull 4-5 of them togehter then aoe with arcane explosion and use fire ward if needed. with dampen magic they will hit around 100-150.

Vile Fire-Soul are also found in blade edge and have a lot better droprate than in nagrad. u will need to kill a few other mobs tho to get to them and there are only 8 of them.
But alone i can do a round of all 8 and wait just 1-2 mins before they respawn again. The other mobs drop mote of shadow which comes in handy sometimes.
my droprate: 313 motes in 512 kills. That's 61.1 droprate :P

Vile fire souls are the place to farm these. You gotta kill a few mote of shadow dropping #$%^&es since they co-spawn with the fire elementals. A couple of elites (one named) also prowl around here so careful when you use a fear.
I was able to get 11 motes in 45 minutes of farming. However, if there is just ONE more person farming them, the place is not worth it because there are only about 8 elementals that spawn there. If you have it to yourself, you can do quite well. I'm on a PvE server so faction is not a problem.
I really do wish Blizz would make farming these things more difficult not because of the scarcity of the mobs. Just make the mobs tougher. It would achieve the desired effect but make it far less of a pain in the ass.

Well as some other ppl said, droprate goes down.
it seems when i farm for 1 hour+ the droprate becomes 10% but then if i dont farm anything for a week and do instances/pvp the droprate goes up again to 40%. Dunno if thats just my luck or thats blizzards way to prevent chinese/bot frming

I've been to all three places...Blades Edge Mountains has the most fire elementals, spaced close together and the levels are 67-68. The ones in Nagrand are in a nice secluded area, but they are levels 70-71, which makes them harder to kill. Combine that with the fact that they are maybe 10 total, anyone farming in the same general area will kill off any chance of you getting many. Blades Edge Mountains has at least 30 of these guys.
The area in Shadowmoon Valley seems to be flooded with people on quests and the place is BIG. I found myself running all over the place and the drops weren't as good as they were in BEM. BEM is also right next to Netherstorm were you can farm for Primal Mana.

I know, these things are a pain to kill if you're fire. Here's a tip if you're an alchemist. Get revered with the Shattar, get the transmute for Primal Air > Primal Fire.
Farm the Primal air and transmute away. Just don't steal my mobs =)

Blade Edge Mountains, Forge Camp Wrath, /mntloc 33,40. Same DR as in Nagrand, 9 Fel Ragers at a time = 4-5 motes. Never seen any1 else there farming them.

just visited the forge camp wrath in blade's edge....they took out the fire elementals and added felguards and flak cannons with the patch!
this was my favorite farming spot too :(

Well, Blizz simply moved the dudes in Blade's Edge to a different place. 63,15 Throne of Kil'Jaeden in Hellfire Peninsula. They used to drop shadow, now they drop fire. Droprate is very good. BUT... everything thats not a fire dude, is an elite demon. So pulling is kinda hard. Go at your own risk.
There's several directly around the throne that aren't near anything. But the respawn is VERY long. It's pretty much just like at the Forge Camps ;)
Edit: LOL if Doom Lord Kazzak spawns on the throne while you're there farming.

Well, I had heard they were increasing droprate of motes of fire in the patch.
I am farming 12 primal fires for my GyroBalanced Khorium Destroyer and I have noticed that all the fire elementals drop essence of fire at almost the same rate as motes of fire. However, the mote droprate seems to be lower than before the patch.
Blizz oops maybe? Maybe those essences are supposed to be motes? I can't understand why level 68-71 mobs would drop level 30-55 mats.
Anyway, I've hit all 3 areas(nagrand, smv and blades edge)for about an hour each since the patch and droprates seem to be holding steady at 1.5-2 primal fires per hour. Which sucks since I need like 7 more.

The only advice i have is to NOT go to nagrand for farming motes of fire. Sure you need a flying mount. But dont make that think that the place wont be croweded. The only thing i saw there was a bunch of dead fire elementals and a bunch of people farming everything that moved.

I agree with the commenter above who said that mining motes of fire in Hellfire Peninsula had been nerfed. I've noticed the drop rate from mining here has dropped off markedly.

-Just walk out onto the section that sort of 't''s out and you can afk to if you'd like.
-At 524 Spell Damage I couldn't exhaust the respawn rate, in 52 min I pulled 34 Motes of Fire.
-Great for mages still in bad gear trying to get Primal Fire

I have killed about 50 or so of the fire elementals and only got 3 darn fire motes. I dont know if I just had a run of badluck or if they changed the drop rate in one of the last patches.

It really is hard to say a diffinitive place to truly farm this. Like I said before I like BEM because of the low HP of the elementals and the the sheer number of them in such a small place. But I've noticed that even then, it's hard to know when you are getting them at a decent rate or not. There are times in which I'm farming these that I'll go on long stretches where out of 20-30 kills, I'm only getting 3 motes. Yet others, I'm getting 2 motes per kill, every other kill. So it's hard to gauge.

I tried both spots this morning, The els in BEM, and the ones in SMV. I farmed each spot for 30 minutes. The results below, period represents no drop, + represents drop, in ( ) represents 2 off same mob.

actually i think that the best place to farm mote of fire is in blade edge. coords 71.18 and close there....
searing elementals have a decent drop rate, this morning i had 60% but i killed not too many of them so i can't say that it is the normal drop rate..i think it sould be about 40%, not sure
this place is not crowded as the elemental plateau and mobs have a quick respawn
imps near there drop also netherweave cloth with a nice rate

I cleared the area in Blades Edge, "CLEARED IT OUT" of the fire elementals. I got 6 motes of fire... that's just sad. 30 elementals (approx.) 6 motes. 1 in 5 drops 1 mote of fire.

Reading this thread I'm really confused of the best place post patch. I usually farm out of Shadowmoon valley but noticed that it is brutally slow. I heard Nagrand is good but is usually overpopulated and a gank-fest so is BE mountains the best place in BE what is the best option as there are 2 locations?

I always farm Motes of Fire at Skald in Blade's Edge.
Alot of the time I am the only one there killing the elementals, and I get a good drop rate. Which I noticed is better when I'm alone there.
Sometimes I get 2 Motes drop from each mob in a row. This is by far the best place I have farmed for Motes of Fire.
Yesterday I was there for a little over 1 hour and a half and I farmed 6 primals.. =)

Farming at the Fel-Pits for my Mage.. He still (only) needs about 52 Primal Fires for his spellfire set. And I'm all alone.

So I guess it takes about 40 kills to get 1 Primal Fire on my server (AH price is between 50-90G)

= Farm Plant creatures in Zangarmarsh. Herbalist gather them from herbs. Previously extracted in Zangar wih the Mote extractor.
Mote of Earth
= Farm Rock Elementals all over Outland. Mine Rock Elementals. Miners get it from Veins.
Mote of Shadow
= Farm Shadow creatures in Hellfire peninsula, Nagrand, Netherstorm. Extracted in Shadowmoon Valley with the Mote Extractor.
Mote of Water
= Farm creatures that live in the water, Zangar, Nagrand, Terokkar. Fish. Extracted in Zangarmarsh with the Mote Extractor (Previously this was Mote of Life)
Mote of Wind
= Farm Air Elementals in Nagrand, Shadowmoon Valley. Extracted in Nagrand with the Mote Extractor.
Mote of Fire
= Farm Fire Elementals in Shadowmoon Valley, Blade Edge. Miners get it from Veins.
After the latest patch I still think Fire is still the hardest to get.

If you want to farm at least 4 primals/hour on average, Skald in BeM is the best choice. And you're hearing this from a fire mage with no points in frost at all.
Your goal is to pull a group of 3-4. There are only a couple areas that you can do this. NOTE: This is best on a level 70.
If you see a group of 3-4 within reasonable range of each other without many basilisks/scorch imps nearby, here's what you do:
1. Head on your flying mount to one of the tiny hills that are everywhere. Make sure you've got dampen magic, mage armor, and arcane intellect on.
2. Some people like to put on fire ward here, but I wait for later. Now, use ice lance to pull all the elementals.
3. Once the elementals are in the same area frost nova them, and back away a few steps. Here's where I put on fire ward so that when frost nova breaks, their attacks will be absorbed and they won't interrupt the end of blizzard.
4. You guessed it- use blizzard until they charge at you.
5. Cone of cold.
6. Run around in circles using arcane explosion. One of my early mistakes was to run around backwards. This doesn't work, because it decreases your speed and the elementals can catch up to you. Wasn't decreasing their speed the whole point of cone of cold?
In a perfect world, that will happen. Sometimes, there’s only one that you can pull at a time. If so:
1. Get near, with arcane intellect, dampen magic, and mage armor.
2. Pull with a frostbolt, then arcane missiles.
3. When the mob gets to you, frost nova it, and ice lance it until the nova breaks. This is because ice lance’s damage is 3x when a mob is frozen.
Here was my loot �?graph’ on motes of fire for 1 hour:

You’re probably thinking, “But wait, Joey, that’s only 2 primals and 8 motes! Not 4 primals like you promised!” about now.
My answer is that I was very disadvantaged in this experiment. Consider the following:
(1) This was my first time trying this. I’d watched videos on youtube before of this method, but never tried it. This means less kills and more potions used. Notice how I was still learning- the first 15 minutes, I had 16 kills, the next 30 minutes, 17 kills per every 15 minutes, and the last 15 minutes, 19 kills.
(2) I was keeping a �?loot graph’. This means more time writing and less time killing.
(3) I was specced POM-pyro with no points in frost. Speaks for itself.
(4) I had competition. In my realm, this place is usually deserted, but in this experiment I had 1 (and 2 later on) players of the opposite faction competing with me. And they were both level 70, which is important because…
(5) MOST IMPORTANTLY: I was not yet level 70, but 69 in this experiment. It might not seem like a lot, but here’s three good reasons it slowed me down:
(a) Obviously, I didn’t have any of my level 70 training (I actually didn’t have 69 training at the time).
(b) I didn’t have my level 70 gear.
(c) I didn’t have a flying mount. This meant that my competition could get around faster than I could, and could see the locations of the mobs from above. Not only did this slow me down, but also it sped my competition up.
So at level 70, you should do better than me.
Overall, this place had a 40.6% (28/69) droprate for me.
If you go on youtube and search “primal fire farming”, you will get many videos showing this method.

OK heres my 2 cents...
1-elemental plateu->good luck getting anything there between the ganking and the 15 other people farming and the mobs are 70+ and have like 10 k hp and the droprate isnt all that;_;
2-the area around doom lord kazzak, the elementals there have a decent drop rate but u are bound to aggro an elite here and there and die + the respawn takes ages
3-BEM also decent drop rate but often overcrowded with people farming and people questing, worth a go if ur alone
4-the fel pits in the center of shadowmoon valley-this is by far the best place to get these if u need loads like i did for spellfire set theres plenty of them and u can kill them without killing anything else, the droprate there after 400+ kills for me is 53%, well i farmed about 25 primals in an afternoon(6-7hrs) which was enough for 2 pieces of my set but would sell for about 500ish gold in total
To sum up the fel pits is the place to go :) hope it helps

just go to SMV, there are a TON of fire elementals there. there is less drama because there are so many more covering a bigger section of land. they are easier to kill as well

Here is my trick for farming the much needed motes for my alchemist and blacksmith. If your server is like Elune and the alliance are always stealing every kill and wont hesistate to start mining a node that you're already mining then listen up. I go to Skald in Blades Edge Mountain (my spot is 73,19) on top of a rock there where there's only 2 imps that spawn and no basalisks. I try not to be greedy so i only farm on that small area but take my time killing each elemental in a very orderly fashion... The first one usually respawns right when i'm killing the last one on my list so at any given time, the alliance walks up and thinks the area has been cleared and leaves not knowing that in 3 seconds another one will respawn. I never run out of mobs this way and the greedy alliance on my server can never steal my kills since i kill them all in a specific order and know where the next one will spawn is. Its a method that I've had to come up with out of necessity otherwise, I'll only get to kill one mob while they come in and wipe out everything else. My drop rate usually stays around 35% when the alliance is around otherwise its a consistant 50%. Hope this helps anyone who desperately needs primals for their profession and need a way to farm these with so many greedy people around trying to make some gold.

Thought I'd go back to the old farming grounds in N. Bladespire - Skald. I can officially say that the drop rate off of Searing Elementals isn't great, approx 10%. My recommendation: farm while you're leveling still, at least you'll be getting xp too! GL out there.
