Brewmaster is performing quite well in the dungeons of Battle for Azeroth. The tank class is known for its high mobility and toolkit to survive huge amounts of incoming damage. In the current state of high tank-damage dungeons, kiting and easily holding threat while doing so is incredibly valuable. Brewmaster excels at this, as well as sustains a medium-high amount of self-healing compared to other tanks with the right azerite traits. We also provide the group with a number of utility abilities that can and should be used often.
The Brewmaster utility kit changed a little coming from Legion and has proved to be a nice fit in Battle for Azeroth Dungeons. The biggest change was the addition of
扫堂腿
to the baseline kit, which now allows having both
平心之环
and sweep at the same time. This guide will have lots of technical information and strategies to prepare before doing keys. Brewmaster is challenging to play in dungeons at a high level and requires coordination with the group to emulate some large pulls that are simplified by other tank class utility spells (
死亡之握
). While this can seem like a daunting challenge, it is always possible to make up for the weaknesses of the Brewmaster tank class with teamwork and coordination. On the other hand, Brewmaster is capable of many things other tanks are not, and that is the fun part. Capitalize on those moments every chance possible.
Currently in BFA, tanks take an absolutely massive amount of damage in high level mythic+ keys. Brewmasters are easy to heal when played optimally, so they naturally excel in this environment. Incoming damage is smoothed to a manageable amount to heal by
醉拳
and pre-emptive use of defensives paired with fast reactive use of
活血酒
. I will go into further detail below on the specific abilities that work together to make Brewmaster shine.

Brewmaster Strengths and Weaknesses
Strengths
Brewmasters are difficult to kill
: The Brewmaster class is built around the
醉拳
mechanic. In a proper gameplay setting, about 86% of physical damage, and 30% of magic damage is delayed over 10 seconds to the Brewmaster. Magic mitigation is roughly on par with other classes in terms of surviving hits. On the other hand, physical mitigation is extremely powerful and 2nd only to Protection Warrior from a raw mitigation standpoint. Brewmaster mitigation has 100% uptime, which is a major benefit to the group always having the defensive capability to head into the next big pull. The stagger kit paired with three major defensive cooldowns:

and (if talented)
躯不坏
make Brewmaster a very sturdy tank.

: Having both a poison and disease dispel has proven to be extremely useful in BFA. There are at least 2-3 mobs or bosses in every dungeon that favor having one or especially two dispels in the party. Some dungeons like Temple and Underrot have critical disease dispel mechanics that some healer classes might not be capable of dispelling, and the tank being able to make up for the healer’s lack of a disease dispel can round out the group composition nicely. See the Dungeon walkthroughs later in the guide for the many uses of detox.
Unique tank utility with
平心之环
: Ring is an exceptional utility spell. Ring makes Brewmaster stand apart from other tanks because of its shear defensive power. Ring stops almost every trash mob in the game from being able to successfully melee you for the duration. There are many uses beyond the basic defensive ring- It can be used as an interrupt, a displacer to move mobs out of sanguine or toward the rest of the pack. It can be used as a defensive barrier on a party member being fixated by a mob, or a space creator to skip a pack of mobs. It can be an emergency option to separate an infested mob from the rest of the pack, or a blockade to prevent mobs from running in fear through sanguine. The list goes on.
AOE mass taunt capability
: Another unique aspect to Brewmaster is having the option to AOE taunt an entire pack of mobs. If talented into

, taunting the statue itself will apply

to every mob in the vicinity. If you keg smash the mobs in the 3-second threat increase window, you will have a significant threat lead on every mob. This can solve threat issues when it is too dangerous to ever be in melee range, especially on the
Skittish
affix.
Baseline AOE stun
:

is great to have in the group composition. 3 seconds is currently the longest AOE stun available, and is often a lifesaver to stop a
戈霍恩之嗣
from getting away or infesting another mob. Having 2-3 stuns in a group is often required for some pulls in higher keys as well.
玄秘掌
: In BFA all 3 monk specializations provide a physical damage boost for all party members. A 5% damage buff is a big deal for most melee classes, and can be the difference between timing a key and depleting at the highest level.
High mobility
: Nothing beats how quickly Brewmaster can get in and out of a pack of mobs. Not only does Brewmaster have
真气突
or
迅如猛虎
for fast movement;
魂体双分
is invaluable for teleporting through walls or floors and instantly line-of-sighting (LOS) mobs to take little damage while pulling or kiting.
Decent Self and off healing
: Oftentimes using
活血术
as a filler spell while kiting a pack is a good choice. This paired with
玄牛之赐
and
天神护佑
, along with many good azerite traits to be mentioned later on, provide a large healing potential for Brewmaster. On higher-level keys a Brewmaster can match or even do more healing than the healer on some trash mob pulls. Off-healing with vivify also deserves an honorable mention as it can save lives.
Universal CC -
分筋错骨
: In season 1 of BFA, having Crowd Control (CC) abilities in the group is important. Monk brings a universal CC with paralyze, and can permanently keep a mob paralyzed if desired. The other universal CC is
致盲
, but is only usable once in a pull due to the long cooldown. Paralyze can also be used as an interrupt on most mobs when not needed for CC.
Consistent AOE damage (while kiting as well)
: Brewmaster performs average or less in the AOE damage department compared to other tanks on paper. However, since kiting is so necessary in BFA, Brewmaster overall damage ranks high compared to the other tanks.

are all usable from range while kiting and make up the majority of AOE damage. Not only does this provide good overall damage, but threat is hardly an issue while kiting as well.
Weaknesses
Lack of grip
: The biggest challenge for Brewmaster. In reality, most mythic+ players are used to having a
死亡之握
in the group. Particularly with caster mobs and ranged archer mobs, grip solves movement issues immediately and nobody has to worry about bringing the mob in. Without having a grip, kicks need to be coordinated on casters when the pull begins, or LOS needs to be used by the whole group to bring the mobs into the pack. This weakness does provide a challenge, but can be worked around without sacrificing much at all (with practice).
Melee range interrupt
: One of the most annoying things is being a tank with a melee-range interrupt.
切喉手
does its job, but you do have to be right on top of the mob to hit the crucial interrupt. While moving a boss or mob, running back into melee range and kicking might not be possible. This is easily handled as a DK or DH tank with ranged interrupt abilities.
No Combat Ressurection
: One of the other downsides to a Brewmaster tank is the lack of combat resurrection (like
复活盟友
). Deaths happen in keys; realistically, things will go wrong and the group will need to recover. In patch 8.1, engineers now have a battle-rez item called:

. This may help solve group composition issues with Brewmaster needing to run with Druids, as DPS and sometimes the tank or healer can now help battle-rez in some situations.
Most AOE threat is tied to
醉酿投
: This is only a weakness at the beginning of a pull usually. Keg smash hits a small radius around the targeted mob, and is the main source of threat. On big pulls, you must wait until all or almost all mobs are within the range for kegsmash to hit everything. If party members are not aware of this and pull mobs away from the group early, it is often difficult to reclaim threat on the pack of mobs as a whole. Communicate this with the group to solve any issues. Oftentimes it only means waiting to DPS for 2-3 seconds.
No damage Cooldowns
: In Legion, Brewmasters had the ability to have high burst on pull with two charges of
醉酿投
, followed by two casts of
火焰之息
and then
爆炸酒桶
to deal a high amount of AOE damage quickly. This is no longer the case, and with no DPS cooldowns to play around either, Brewmasters are unable to burst for high amounts of damage. This is not a game-breaking weakness, since overall damage is still solid, but it is worth keeping in mind.
Patch 8.1 Changes
Only a few things changed in regards to Brewmaster tuning in 8.1. A (slight) nerf to
醉拳
was pushed through. Paraphrased, this changed effective stagger from 86% to 83.5% physical damage (at roughly ilvl 385). This is of little consequence, and after more gear and agility from the next tier of loot, stagger will probably feel stronger than it was even before the nerf.
New Azerite Traits
勇往直前
- Replacing the

trait, this will be a nice option to have in dungeons and raid. It’s a small chance to gain the extra brew charge, but it’s a decent survival bonus when it procs as well as the constant armor bonus.

- Replaces

. This gives the class even more mobility and some defensive use to

, and may be worth grabbing one exit trait for dungeon use.
Other Changes
碎玉闪电
- now deals damage instantly instead of waiting for a tick as a nice quality of life change for tagging mobs or breaking CC.
召唤玄牛雕像
- Will now pulse threat to all enemies within 20 yards, instead of 30 yards. This is a quality of life improvement as well; 30-yard radius is tough to play around without pulling unintended mobs.
All tanks now gain main stat from spirit flasks and feasts instead of stamina while in tank spec, another quality of life improvement.
Brewmaster changes for the 8.1 patch were very minor, and were mostly a slight adjustment to
醉拳
for the upcoming new tier of content scaling in Battle of Dazar’alor. The class remains powerful as ever.
Best Races for Mythic+
Racial abilities can actually make quite a difference in high mythic+. The passive minor stat bonuses from different races do not really matter in the grand scheme of things, but the utility each race brings should be considered for high level mythic+. My recommended races are the following:
Alliance
Night Elf
:

is very strong. I could go on and on about the skips made possible using meld. Melding after a skip not only prevents a death from the tank which saves 5 seconds, but instantly drops combat instead of having to wait around trying to die in some situations. If all five Alliance members have stealth or shadowmeld, this becomes even faster and is a huge time save. Beyond this, shadowmeld can be used like
消失
to avoid targeted mechanics in dungeons.
Dwarf
and
Dark Iron Dwarf
:

are both also very strong. Not only do these provide extra damage reduction cooldowns for on-use, but can remove many of the threatening bleeds in BFA dungeons. This includes removing grievous and necrotic stacks.
Horde

is strong in BFA dungeons. There are many enemy buffs and effects to purge with torrent. Torrent is good to use for energy regeneration when not needed as a purge as well.
Tauren

fill similar niches. Both abilities are nice as an AOE disrupt on enemy casts, and have a very short stun involved. The stuns will put Diminishing Returns on other group members’ stuns as well, so be sure to use these racials last or as an emergency interrupt.
Brewmaster Utility
A lot of the Utility Brewmaster brings is also what makes the class a strong choice for mythic+. Some of this info may be a repeat of above, but here is the full list of utility spells that should be used as often as possible in mythic+:

: The most unique part of the Brewmaster kit. Ring will stop almost every trash mob in the game from being able to reach you as the tank. In addition, it can be used as an interrupt, a displacer to move mobs out of sanguine or toward the rest of the pack. It can be used as a defensive barrier on a party member being fixated by a mob, or a space creator to skip a pack of mobs. It can be an emergency option to separate an infested mob from the rest of the pack, or a blockade to prevent mobs from running in fear through sanguine. The most typical use for ring is to start kiting in general. Especially on
necrotic
weeks, the freedom and space given by ring is extra valuable.
扫堂腿
: Sweep is generally available to use once during every trash mob pull. A 3-second AOE stun can be clutch to have, for both survival and optimizing group damage. Use sweep often and at the right moments. Try to catch channeling spells or
戈霍恩之嗣
attempting to infest for extra value.
玄秘掌
: Apply this to every mob as soon as possible. This is normally easy to do, but pay attention to bosses such as
沃卡尔
where each totem should be tagged right off the bat to apply mystic touch.
特别快递
: Special delivery is an option to take as a back up slow. The problem with SD is that the kegs will miss the mobs frequently if the pack is being kited. It is a strong 50% slow, and the whole purpose of the talent is to make kiting easier. It is a little unreliable, so preferably use another slow in the party if possible.
召唤玄牛雕像
: Brewmaster brings the capability of mass-taunting via the Ox Statue commonly referred to as Dave. Mass taunting is especially strong in massive pulls like in the beginning of
Tol Dagor
, or during
skittish
weeks in general. All that needs to be done is to lay down the statue in the middle of all the mobs and then use a macro to

it. Throw a
醉酿投
in right after the AOE taunt and all threat should safely belong to you. Be careful when positioning the statue so it does not pull extra mobs.

(or provide an alternative rather) in certain situations. As an example, provoking a mob across a
sanguine
puddle is a great way to prevent some healing on it.

: the universal CC paralyze is particularly useful in season one of BFA. The
infested
affix ensures that paralyze is used nearly every pull. It is also refreshable, and usable on any crowd-controllable mob.
碎玉闪电
: Jade lightning can provide a utility niche if a 40-yard range spell is needed. Sometimes mobs may be pulled with a far-reaching ability to sneak them past another pack. Jade lightning does instant damage as of patch 8.1, so breaking infested targets out of CC or pulling mobs is now faster than ever.
轮回转世
: Having a resurrection spell is nice as the tank. Start casting after pulls to get a party member up while your healer drinks to save time.
迅如猛虎
: Beyond the movement speed increase (which can also be cast on another player to get them out of harm’s way), tiger’s lust also adds a root/slow disable to the group’s utility pool. Tiger’s lust is comparable to
自由祝福
.
Talents
Listed below are all viable Talent options for mythic+, even at the highest level of play. Some players may prefer one talent over another, which is completely fine.
Trell's default talent build

猛虎之眼
: A small boost to single-target healing and damage, my personal preference if Chi Burst is not needed.
真气爆裂
: Take chi burst when you feel that more AOE burst damage/threat is needed. Chi burst is also a tool that can be used to prevent an
infested
mob (season one) from spawning at the very beginning of a key. Aim a chi burst at the mob through the starting gate if close enough, and it will pull early causing the infest to cancel.
真气突
: My personal preference, the 10-second speed bonus after initially rolling is great for kiting and fast pace throughout the key. The speed bonus is stackable/refreshable as well, so time a 2nd torpedo just as the previous buff is about to expire.
迅如猛虎
: can be just as good as torpedo. TL also gives the party another utility spell if needed as it will free a player from a root or slow. Both talents on this row are equally good choices.
酒仙轻酿
: Provides the necessary defensive boost that Brewmaster needs. Without this talent, using
活血酒
would rarely be an option due to only having enough brews to maintain
铁骨酒
.
玄牛酒
: I don’t currently recommend using Black Ox Brew, but in the future this may be the go-to option again. This talent currently loses too much usage when kiting is involved, or downtime in general. To match the brew numbers provided by Light Brewing,
醉酿投
and
猛虎掌
would need to have full rotational use at all times.
平心之环
: Ring is the default choice here unless Ox Statue is needed for something.
召唤玄牛雕像
: Ox statue is a great pick for the beginning of
Tol Dagor
up to the first boss. After killing the boss, run out and swap talents to Ring of Peace. Other situations to pick Ox Statue involve a need for more threat on packs. Statue positioning can be tricky to use properly (without pulling more mobs than intended), but with proper placement and use of
嚎镇八方
macros, will completely solve threat issues.
躯不坏
: Dampen is my default choice. The beginning of a pull is usually when damage is threatening enough to kill a Brewmaster. Mobs may not be tightly grouped right away, so the tank needs to be on top of everything to gather and hold threat. Heavy burst damage comes in during this time, so having an additional defensive cooldown as an option is game changing (and lifesaving). Dampen also provides a huge magic damage reduction cooldown, which Brewmaster lacks otherwise.
禅悟冥想
can sometimes fill this void but not always due to the nature of the spell.
金创药
: Is competitive with Dampen. Playing healing elixir will result in more self-healing, but also more damage taken. However, this talent may be a better option if you are guaranteed to live through the burst damage moments in a key without using Dampen.
grievous
weeks also give healing elixir some more value over Dampen, and may be the better choice.
碧玉疾风
: RJW is currently the best choice on this row, as it just does more damage, and is more consistent.
特别快递
: SD is fine damage-wise throughout a key, but is inconsistent in what targets it will hit, and sometimes missing every mob flat out. Take this only if a 50% slow on the mobs is sorely needed by the group.
坚定不屈
: High tolerance is the best pick for higher level mythic+.

is useful up until mid-range keys, but does not scale up in value like it’s counterpart High Tolerance. In high keys, guard gets taken off in one GCD most of the time, whereas it took up a GCD just to use it in the first place.
Azerite Traits
The best Azerite traits for M+ are those that provide both defensive and offensive value at once, or a healing increase overall. Azerite traits can make a huge difference in gameplay as a tank, especially if you are looking to self-heal as much as possible. Keeping that in mind, listed below are the best traits to pick up for dungeons, listed in order of my preference. Other traits not listed here are generally ok, but lose out to these traits if at equal item level. Sometimes taking an average Outer Ring trait may be worth if the piece also has good Tier 2 and Tier 3 traits.

With the traits above in mind, here are some of the better Azerite pieces to look for. This chart is made in anticipation of the raid tier
Battle for Dazar’Alor
. These are some of the better pieces with good traits. There may not be a perfect setup, but go for highest item level pieces available that have a few traits from the above list when deciding.
This list also keeps in mind the most realistic options there are considering item level 415 pieces. While a piece off of the world boss
Ivus
might have decent traits, it will not be ilvl 415 and will fall behind.

Mastering Brewmaster in Dungeons
General Tanking Considerations
I would say it is impossible to completely “master” any class in an ever-scaling environment such as mythic+. That is the challenge of mythic+ and it can be quite fun to figure out how to pull six packs of mobs at the same time successfully, how to do a long skip, or just tightening up damage on a boss, etc. Strategies constantly change and develop in high keys across the community. Preparation and practice are equally important to pushing faster and higher. There are many things to keep in mind in order to improve skill as a tank and more specifically a Brewmaster.
What composition do you have? Before even thinking about the dungeon itself, understand what kind of healer is about to be healing you and what they are capable of. Most importantly, this determines how much you will need to kite mobs, strategy on bosses (i.e.

, when to soak the

stacks off), how much you can safely pull, and more. All healers play differently, you may be able to pull off a very high tank-damage pull with a Brewmaster-Resto Druid combo, but may not be able to with a Brewmaster-Disc Priest combo (as a hypothetical example). The composition of DPS in the group is important as well: Does the group have strong burst damage, how many stops for disruptable casts do they have, what utility do they have to help you as the tank. All of these considerations are probably the most important before going into any dungeon.
Preparation – this is not Brewmaster specific but applies because you are the tank. The tank largely controls the pulls in a dungeon, the flow, and where enemies are positioned. Because of this, there always needs to be a plan. Particularly in Season 1 of BFA, the
Infested
affix causes a huge amount of preparation for a mythic+ run in advance. If you need to crowd control two different infested mobs with
分筋错骨
or another party member’s CC ability, tell them beforehand so they are on board with your strategy. Communicate who is interrupting which cast, and remind them during the run. Discuss how the group will skip a dangerous pack if need be. Figure out
嗜血
timings in advance, center the most important lust on the hardest pull or boss in the dungeon, and then plan the other lusts 10 minutes apart from that. Communicate with the group that a certain pull needs to have DPS cooldowns ready such as
恶魔变形
or
化身:艾露恩之眷
for that pull in order to survive. Lastly, plan to the best of your ability to have your own defensive cooldowns (fort/dampen/zen med) available for the pulls you will need them for. A lot of this is learned by trial and error, but if you can prepare well enough, many deaths can be avoided and time saved in the key.
Mastering Brewmaster starts with just being a great tank player, which encompasses all the preparation, communication and synergy with the group as mentioned above. One could endlessly prepare for a dungeon, but that would be no fun so eventually you do need to get into the actual gameplay. I’ll go over many aspects of Brewmaster gameplay below.
Brewmaster Fundamental Rules
There are a few basic rules to be followed as a Brewmaster.
Never let
铁骨酒
fall off as long as you are taking incoming damage from any source other than stagger. This is the most important rule, and if you are new to Brewmaster you will want to focus on this until it feels natural to always have Ironskin up.
Keep the
火焰之息
(BoF) debuff on all targets attacking you as often as possible. This is free damage reduction, and should be used on cooldown. BoF has a short range in a frontal cone, so make sure you are close to all of the mobs in a big pull the moment you press it.
Land every
醉酿投
on the middle-most mob in a pack. This is particularly important in BFA because of the reduced threat that tanks generate. Keg smash needs be used immediately on cooldown and needs to hit every mob in combat with you when possible. On pulls where you have to grab several packs at once, you may need to

on another pack to initially get threat. If pulling more you may need to lightly aggro every pack with

as you pass it, then keg smash all the mobs at once when they are gathered up.
Never cap Brew charges unless very heavy damage is coming up soon and you are pooling charges on purpose. Keeping

up will automatically take care of this most of the time, but during
嗜血
you may need to purify even low amounts of damage to keep from capping charges. This is in no way a bad thing; take any form of free damage reduction possible.
Use either a

just before entering combat on each pull. On higher-level keys, “pre-potting” before combat starts will cause the potion cooldown to start and then be up for the next pull again. This is important for more damage and aggro, or speeding up and surviving a pull. On bosses, use a 2nd Agility potion when it is off cooldown unless you know you will need to save the potion cooldown for a

immediately after the boss is dead for the next pull.
Make good use of your mobility. One of the most fun parts of playing Brewmaster is how quickly you can move around. Use this to your advantage every chance you get. Move between pulls or kite quickly to avoid heavy damage by use of

Make good use of your utility. Brewmaster brings a lot of utility to the group and it should be used as often as possible.

is a very underrated spell and can eliminate a long list of mechanics in BFA dungeons. See the specific dungeon walkthroughs below for good times to use detox. Use

to disrupt enemy casts. Use

on yourself or others in times of need as an off-heal. Use

to resurrect a party member while your healer drinks water to save time.
The most important priorities you have as the tank are (in this order):
Survive at all costs
Hold threat
Maximize your group’s potential damage (and your own)
Luckily, Brewmasters have one of the best tools in the game for survival -
醉拳
, which allows us to take an absurd amount of physical damage without falling over. Use stagger to your advantage and face-tank pulls initially when possible to generate as much threat on the mobs while you can. A good benchmark to aim for is to stay in melee range for at least 3 keg smashes while your
碧玉疾风
is ticking on the mobs. During this initial 15 seconds of the pull is a great time to use your own Defensive Cooldowns or a healer’s external (such as
铁木树皮
) to smooth damage even more. Stagger generally makes boss fights easier on the healer than for healing other tanks. There are some exceptions where bosses attack with primarily magic damage (i.e.
商业大亨拉兹敦克
), but in general this allows the healer to relax and damage the boss while only needing to give the tank attention every few GCD’s (Global Cooldowns).
Use your defensive cooldowns early and often. The beginning of a pull of several mobs is usually the best time to use
壮胆酒
or
躯不坏
. Fort has a long cooldown of 7 minutes, but reduces to about a 3 minute CD with proper usage of
醉酿投
and
猛虎掌
. With proper use, you can realistically use both big cooldowns 8-15 times in each dungeon. Communicate with your healer about when you want their external if possible; Many healers may not be aware that defensive cooldowns and externals do not affect damage already taken (stagger damage ticking), so if they throw

on you while you are kiting it will likely be a waste.
Kiting Effectively
Kiting mobs (
dragging a pack behind you while out of range of their melee attacks
) is a very important skill to have as a tank. Brewmaster is close to or the best in terms of holding threat while kiting. The majority of Brewmaster AOE damage can be used from a short range away from the mobs and on cooldown with ever regenerating energy. Utilizing both
扫堂腿
and
平心之环
make it very easy to safely start kiting a pack. Ring of peace affects nearly every mob in the game, including some that cannot be slowed like the
铁潮执行者
s in
Freehold
. On packs that cannot be slowed, you can also use chi torpedo/tiger’s lust to stay out of range even longer, and then transcend to top it all off. This is especially useful on
necrotic
weeks but is a good strategy in general when a pull is starting to get dangerous. If you don’t have the best gear or need more threat generation during
skittish
week, consider using

to mass taunt all the mobs and then keg smash immediately after to securely hold threat on everything while you kite. While kiting a pack, you will have empty GCD’s (global cooldowns) when all damage aoe abilities are on cooldown. Use this time to

spirit down, check CC’d targets, or yell at your healer to heal you more (politely).
Kiting is essential in BFA because of how hard mobs hit in general. Brewmaster hardly loses any damage or threat while out of melee range, and reduces an enormous amount of damage taken. When you know you need to kite a pack, consider a general routine:
Start the pull in a safe spot away from patrols, and build as much threat as possible with defensive cooldowns up.
When it is time to kite, use
扫堂腿
and run slightly out of range.
Put down
平心之环
between you and the mobs to keep them still and grouped up but not able to hit you.
Put down your
魂体双分
spirit.
Use

to move faster than the mobs and start kiting once Ring of peace is over.
Use Transcendence to port back behind the pack and move safely back to the same area.
Use any other group utility to keep the mobs still and further maximize the group’s damage (the best example is Balance Druid’s

Utilizing Brewmaster Mastery
Brewmaster mastery comes in the form of
精通:醉拳大师
. Mastery will passively cause many attacks from mobs or bosses to count as a “dodge” automatically. The majority of time it does not need to be actively thought about, but there are a few moments where watching your Elusive Brawler stacks or dodges can be quite useful. There are abilities scattered throughout dungeons that are dodge-able such as
衰弱抽击
and
致命狙击
. If you line up a
幻灭踢
or two before the cast goes off, there will be a very high chance to dodge the hit. As the expansion goes on and we have a higher precent value of mastery, this strategy will actually guarantee a dodge. A similar effect can be produced by turning your back toward the hit right before the dodge-able mechanic, and then swinging around to dodge it at the last second. This ensures your
精通:醉拳大师
stacks are not consumed by the previous hit.
In general, an even spread of stats in mythic+ is recommended. On the
necrotic
affix however, mastery is worth more than usual because more mastery equates to less necrotic stacks.

is especially good during these weeks. During necrotic boss encounters, when kiting is not an option, watch your necrotic stacks carefully and try to force a stack drop by dodging the last 2 melee attacks before the stacks are projected to drop. Since about every other hit from boss mobs applies necrotic, plan to roll away right after you dodge an attack, or have another party member taunt for one melee attack while you build more elusive brawler stacks. Then, taunt or come back into melee and drop stacks for free.
When to Purify
When to use
活血酒
is no easy answer, and is something every Brewmaster player can constantly improve on in mythic+. Purifying at the right time depends on a couple factors:
Is your healer unable to keep you alive during the next few seconds unless you purify?
Are you about to cap on brews?
Did an intermittent instance of high damage just occur? (most common use)
If any 3 of those conditions are true purifying is the right answer, unless
铁骨酒
is about to fall off and using a purify would not allow enough charges to keep ironskin up. Purifying is a mini-game in itself, and mostly will come to be easier over time. At the start of pulls, you will want to pop two charges of ironskin brew and then have a purify ready in the first 10 seconds for the initial damage spike. During
嗜血
be sure to purify often, as many more charges are available with high haste.
The best example of planned purifying in a dungeon encounter is on
达萨大王
in
King’s Rest
. Keep
铁骨酒
up for the whole encounter and use
活血酒
only right after
剑刃连击
finishes. A purify charge should be available for just about every combo if the damage rotation is being done properly. Make sure to purify as fast as possible after the combo ends to snapshot the maximum amount of stagger.
Sometimes you may not want to purify even if sitting at a large amount of stagger, if no more damage is coming out for the next few seconds. I find myself in this situation while
自然之力
is down or I have several defensives up at once, while kiting, or my healer is using a large cooldown, which may overpower the heavy stagger. In these cases, hold the purify for the next instance of high damage where there may not be another source of damage reduction.
Purifying timings get easier over time and will make the largest difference in survivability when used well. Eventually it becomes muscle memory and you will not have to consider 100 different factors before purifying.
Line of Sight
“Line of sight,” Lining,” or “LOSing” is an important tool for Brewmasters to use. This means to either outrange a mob’s ability completely, or move around a corner so that they cannot hit you with the spell/attack. LOS spots are Brewmasters way of gathering many spread mobs to the same place as a pseudo
死亡之握
. This is usually one of the more challenging parts of playing Brewmaster and requires some coordination to group up big pulls. The most common way of executing this is to get threat on a caster mob and then move back around a corner to force it in. Use corners as survival tools to stop dangerous casts from hitting you like

is a great tool to instantly LOS mobs, and force them to move in as fast as possible. Be sure to communicate to a group that they will need to LOS with you in some situations in order for mobs to finish moving into the correct position. Many players may have run with a Blood Death Knight tank for the majority of mythic+ play and are not used to LOS strategies—keep this in mind.
Weakauras/Macros/Addons
This is my recommended list of weakauras, macros and addons. I prefer to be minimalistic and use only what I feel is necessary for success to avoid cluttering the screen. Being able to see what is going on is pretty important. There are many weakauras out there, so customize and create a UI that works best for your taste.
Brewmaster/Tank Weakauras
ISB timer
: This is the most important buff to track. Use this or another similar weakaura to track how many seconds
铁骨酒
has left.
Normalized stagger weakaura
: this is a very good visual indicator for how much
醉拳
you really have, and how hard it will hit you for over time. I personally don’t use a stagger weakaura, but do recommend this for players that may not have played the tank spec for a long time. If using this, be sure to follow the instructions on this link to setup properly.

Dungeon Affixes and How to Deal With Them
Fortified
/
Tyrannical
: The main thing to keep in mind here is how the route will be affected because of the extra health and damage on either trash mobs or bosses. Tyrannical usually means pulling bigger between bosses to make up time. Fortified means you may want to pull cautiously since packs will live for a long time and deal quite a lot of damage.
嗜血
timings are usually affected as well. Sometimes it is worth to lust trash packs on Fortified weeks, though on higher keys lusting bosses may be the best time save regardless of affix (in most cases).
Bolstering
: Pull similar health mobs together during bolstering week. Pulls can be quite different and tedious to group up this way but will make the run as smooth as possible. It’s not worth it to bolster a mob with twice the health as the rest many times over, it usually results in huge time-loss. Sometimes there is no choice, so hold off on AOE damage and only single-target the biggest mob down first. Some creative gameplay can separate mobs enough to outrange the bolstering stacks. Use
嚎镇八方
to speed mobs away from the pack if the group can coordinate enough to hold the other mobs still and kill them out of bolstering range.
Raging
: Kite when mobs hit the 30% health threshold. Mobs already hit hard enough in BFA dungeons before raging, so get out of there. Have Druids and Hunters prioritize
安抚
to take raging off of caster mobs or archer/gunner mobs that shoot at random players. Raging will instantly affect any dots or debuffs from the mobs, be especially careful of bleeds from

Sanguine
: Pull enemies to open areas if possible. Change direction of the pull once puddles start dropping to maneuver mobs around the puddles. Plan for the next pull ahead of time to make sure there will be space. Use both

to knock or speed mobs through puddles to avoid healing and losing time. Use Provoke on high health mobs to bring them to the front of the pack when kiting. The party should be taking out the lowest health mobs first in the back of the group as they are being kited. In dungeons like
Tol Dagor
, do your best to keep enemies from running in fear through sanguine. This is difficult, but use

at an opportune time to stop the mobs from running.
Teeming
: Keep in mind that more pulls may be necessary to finish Enemy Forces count for the mythic+ dungeon. Some pulls will have more mobs that are dangerous and will be quite difficult to live through. BFA teeming packs have already been tuned back several times, but it continues to be a very challenging affix.
Bursting
: Use powerful defensive cooldowns during high bursting stacks if possible. Except for immunities, Brewmaster has the best defensive versus bursting:

. Get out of the pack and channel zen med through all the bursting stacks to heavily reduce the damage taken.

will also help if needed.
Necrotic
: The necrotic dot is staggerable as if it were magic damage like any other bleed effect. Brewmaster excels at necrotic naturally by dodging melee hits left and right. However, on a fast melee-ing boss you may want a DPS player to taunt briefly to help drop stacks. On necrotic trash, use all of the tools in the kit to escape quickly and keep mobs away while dropping stacks.

is very important to use properly on this affix.
Skittish
: Skittish hasn’t been too bad in BFA. Since threat is closer to skittish levels by default, skittish may seem like any other week’s threat values at times. Be mindful of how efficient you are using
醉酿投
during skittish, as every cast needs to hit every mob in the pack. Use
召唤玄牛雕像
if threat is still not enough while keg smashing optimally.
Explosive
: With changes in Patch 8.1,
醉酿投
and
火焰之息
should now hit explosive orbs while targeting them. This allows the full rotation to hit orbs. Center mobs around the orbs so that AOE still cleaves the pack while dispatching orbs.

should almost if not completely one-shot an orb as well.
Grievous
: Grievous is actually an affix Brewmaster is good at these days.
醉拳
prevents Brewmaster from quickly dipping below 90% health into grievous range. Pool

(if talented) to top yourself off when going below half health. This will instantly take off grievous and give the healer more breathing room.
Volcanic
: Usually a non-affix for the tank, but be sure to watch where the plumes are to avoid extra damage.
Quaking
: Quaking always happens at the worst possible time. Use

or a defensive if it lines up with heavy incoming tank damage to prevent a one-shot. Try to avoid casting just before quaking is about to happen. There are several weakauras to track when quaking is scheduled to happen, I personally prefer this one:

Dealing with BFA Seasonal Affixes
Infested
(Season One): Infested mobs are preset through the dungeons and are on a 3-week rotation. Prepare for infested by checking out which mobs are circled in red in Method Dungeon Tools. Base your pulls around taking out non-infested mobs first, then pulling several infested mobs together for maximum efficiency (since their healing effect cancels out on each other). Luckily
分筋错骨
affects every mob that is able to be CC’d and should be used any time there’s an infested mob in the pull. Use
平心之环
as a separation tool in case an infested mob’s CC breaks and starts running in. Break infested mobs out of CC instantly with
碎玉闪电
once the other mobs are dealt with.
Reaping
(Season Two): Reaping is replacing Infested at the start of season 2 and sounds like an exciting change. In some form or fashion, every 20% mark on enemy forces will trigger an event where spirits will attack the group. There has been very little testing (if at all?) with the new affix, so it will be exciting to see what it entails with the new season. I will update this section once I have figured out the best way to deal with it!

Method Dungeon Tools (MDT)
In each Dungeon Walkthrough below, you will find the general route for Fortified, Tyrannical, and Teeming affixes. All routes included below are linked via my
Pastebin
which contains the import text string needed to see the route in-game. To use the imports, open MDT in game and paste the import text string into the "import" field.
MDT is a great tool and I highly recommend using it for getting into any level of keystones. Keep in mind that these routes are general use, with only Fortified, Tyrannical, or Teeming in mind. In reality, the route will change slightly every week based on certain affixes. Though all affixes affect the size of pulls or how to approach them, the affixes that drastically change the route are Bolstering, Explosive and Teeming. Use these routes as a good starting point, but customize them further based on the week.
Once imported, you will see each dungeon listed pull-by-pull. Pulls are circled in white to show what all is included in each pull, and bosses are circled in blue. The white arrows mean to take that path, and skip the mobs along the way in some (creative) way- In most cases this means using a

or death skip by pulling the mobs out of the way so the group can pass safely. I put a note with “lust!” next to the pull or boss for the typical lust timings on each route.

The first area of trash to kill is referred to as the “humanoid side” of Atal’Dazar. Take a left from the entrance of the dungeon and pull the first 2 packs from the humanoid side together. Avoid pulling the constructs, but most of the humanoid trash is good for enemy forces count. If need be, add a Skyscreamer from down below using
碎玉闪电
into these pulls. These mobs all have dangerous mechanics for the group, keep the following in mind:

: A ranged party member can bait the
暴戾突袭
outside of the group, as long as everyone else is directly in melee range. This ability is a near one-shot on higher level fortified keys.
达萨莱神官
: Watch for the
邦桑迪的帷幕
cast as the highest priority, as this will prevent all other interrupts and CC from working if it goes through. Also watch for the

cast to prevent a big heal. This mob will try its hardest to wipe the group by also casting

on any CC’d infested mobs, so make sure this doesn’t go off.

when possible, this cast deals a large chunk of damage on a random party member. Use a stun or CC to disrupt the

Positioning on this boss is the most important part. The goal is to have the boss in a consistent location that allows a ranged player and the healer to both outrange the

at the same time. There are several good spots to tank Kragg, near the bird nest is decent and toward the exit of the arena is another.
Stand with your back facing away from the arena from this position so that you don’t share the

does land in melee carefully move the boss to a new spot a few yards away. Try to only move the boss between powder shots.

The trash mobs down by the Council area and beyond are the best and “easiest” to pull in large numbers. Clear most of the dungeon’s enemy forces count in this area. Keep in mind some of the more dangerous mobs for tanks to worry about. When doing pulls of 2-3 groups of mobs, try not to pull too many

: By far the most annoying captain for tanks - dodge

and then position Jolly to where the blades travel directly back to the captain and disappear. This is a tricky mechanic, as the knockback from the blades on high level keys scales to the point where being knocked throws you so high in the air that the boss resets. Avoid this by standing maximum melee range from Jolly, and then stutter stepping backwards. Rotate the boss slightly as the blade finishes moving in. This is difficult to do consistently without letting the blade’s hitbox come into contact with your character and Jolly at the same time. The blade damage and knockback are dodge-able, but it is not guaranteed. Plan for the worst by having a

spirit down and ready. Other players in the group can also be ready to taunt the boss in case the knockback occurs and throws you into the sky. *The knockback issue may have been fixed in 8.1.

Pull the mobs on the way to the Council boss with care, as almost every mob is threatening to the tank. I try to avoid pulling any combination of 3 Hex Priests and Berserkers at a time. The magic damage casts and bleeds overlapping can demolish any tank.

It’s possible to fight the boss before dealing with the trash mobs at all. This saves a little time but I wouldn’t suggest trying it without some practice with the group. Here are a few important details to keep in mind while fighting Vol’zith.
In phase one (while Vol’zith is active and attacking you), be sure to keep the

It is also important to tag a mob with keg smash before they are killed by the hit, otherwise they will not give enemy forces count. The spotter can be difficult to control movement-wise – walk into melee range of the spotter to trigger the mob to follow about 10 seconds. Use

It is optimal to have a 4-man rotation of soaks, one group member at a time per one pillar that spawns. Brewmaster can help soak if needed as a backup, but the boss deals quite a lot of tank damage at the same time so it can be risky.

Trash Mobs in the Area
Motherlode is divided into 4 large sections, each with a bunch of trash mobs that only appear in their area, followed by a boss. The first two areas of mobs (before Crowd Pummeler and Azerokk) are by far the most efficient areas to pull mobs for enemy forces count. The last two sections of trash (before Rixxa and Mogul) are extremely difficult pulls and slow on top of that.
Head toward the first boss and pull a lot of trash along the way. Be sure to line up the biggest pulls with big DPS cooldowns such as

: Plan to pull many peacekeepers in the dungeon, as they are worth quite a lot of enemy forces count. Peacekeepers attack in short bursts in between casting other abilities that will not harm the tank. Be careful after the

cast finishes and the Peacekeeper melees for a few seconds. Brewmaster is a great tank for these mechs, and can pull several together at a time even on high fortified keys with ease. Try to tank facing away from the group so that

on an upheaval hit to greatly reduce the damage.
Avoid damaging the drones at all before the boss casts

This dungeon is probably the most rogue-friendly dungeon of all time. Bring a rogue to unlock shortcut pathways, cages to unlock group buffs, extra mobs for enemy forces count, and several nice skips. If there is no rogue, be sure to bring an Encriptionist or Blacksmith with

The trash mobs on the way to Jes Howlis have some troublesome mechanics.
sanguine
is a particularly difficult affix in this area because it is so tightly packed with small hallways and mobs all over. In addition, almost every mob will run in fear at 30% health, making sanguine puddles extremely difficult to control and prevent healing. To combat this, pull packs far back to a more open area when possible, and use
扫堂腿
and
平心之环
to stop the mobs from running directly into sanguine. Try to pull packs with equal health mobs to avoid an early sanguine puddle from prolonging the pull.

If they are manually broken out of the cells they will bolster/burst/drop sanguine and also give count, but if the boss breaks them out during the encounter, they will do none of these things. However, they will apply
necrotic
either way.

Tank the boss near a corner in phase one, so that the group may easily LOS the

Rotate interrupts on

Use defensive cooldowns in phase two once the

Trash Mobs in the Area
The trash mobs on the way to Valyri have significantly more health than the mobs before. This trash is difficult to group up as a Brewmaster because of the many ranged mobs that stand in place and shoot at the tank. Use LOS and
平心之环
as much as possible to quickly group up the pulls. This area is fantastic for enemy forces count though, as the cannons absolutely destroy the mobs.
Since these mobs have so much health, use the cannons to your advantage around the outside areas of the jail. Rotate with your DPS when possible and hop in the cannon, fire a few times, and get back out. This will ensure you retain plenty of threat on the mobs. The cannon damage is important in high keys, so keep the mobs grouped up for efficient and quick pulls. LOS and
平心之环
are key grouping mobs in this area. Use the cannon to blast and knockback the mobs constantly to stop their casts from going through.

Knight Captain Valyri Boss Encounter
Tank the boss in the middle of the room as default between moving out of barrel explosions.
Help move barrels at all times, it is optimal for tank/healer to primarily take care of the mechanic.
As of patch 8.1, all monk movement abilities work while running barrels. Use
滚地翻
and
魂体双分
throughout the fight.
When moving barrels, move them into far corners, not necessarily to the same corner each time. Be ready to drop a barrel if the boss targets you with

.
The biggest part of the fight is to ensure that a chain reaction doesn’t start with barrels igniting other barrels over and over. If moved properly into the nearest corner, this shouldn’t happen.

: There is one other warden before this point, who was in the Jes Howlis area. Sometimes he is there and sometimes he is not. It’s unclear if he just gets killed by the other mobs or goes off on a journey randomly. Either way, the one warden before Jes, and the three before Korgus have one mechanic to dodge –

. You may need to kite the wardens, as they deal significant melee damage.

Overseer Korgus Boss Encounter
Position the boss in such a way that the healer and ranged DPS in the group have a corner or wall to be knocked into without worry. There are several good spots to tank the boss, around the corners of the platform.
The fight revolves around surviving
爆炸
casts which will prioritize ranged DPS and the healer. Use
躯不坏
when the mechanic targets you as a Brewmaster or time a
禅悟冥想
for the initial damage. Watch for when the fight’s cast sequence becomes desynced and the boss starts back-to-back
爆炸
casts, dealing much more damage to the group than usual. The debuff does not stack anymore but the burst still comes in a second time while the party is still healing up, so be ready to cast
活血术
on one of the targeted players to help them survive the second hit.
Help soak

whenever you do not have the debuff from a previous deadeye shot. The goal here is to capitalize on dodging as many casts as possible as a Brewmaster. Cast

at least once during the Deadeye cast. This should give as high a chance as possible to dodge the

Waycrest has a lot to plan for in advance. From the start, pull the

mobs all together, maybe even with the next pull at the same time on tyrannical weeks. Use a

to bring it all together quickly.
The dungeon will start either Upper Left, Upper Right, or Lower Right as a random chance. For the sake of this guide and boss order, assume the Upper Left path is open. Keep in mind that several types of Witches spawn throughout the dungeon when you get near to their location. These witches are on a weekly rotation of which ones spawn, and will be consistent regardless of which doors open. There are three different types of witches that could spawn in each location. They cannot be slowed or crowd controlled in any way, so beware of their heavy melee hits as well as the following:

away from the group. Move away as it starts casting to outrange the hit. Interrupt

Pull the active sister near to the other sisters when possible. The bosses tend to melee another party member when the tank is out of range since they are rooted when not active.
Rotate interrupts on the active Sister’s cast. Rotating between three 15-second cooldown interrupts are enough to handle every cast.
Watch for the

to move to a new Sister and
嚎镇八方
as soon as it moves. It is difficult to retain threat beforehand since you are unable to deal damage to it.
Use defensives when
女巫索林娜
and
女巫马拉迪
are active to reduce party damage. While Malady is active, jump in place constantly to avoid damage from

Help the healer top off a party member hit by
锯齿荨麻
while
女巫布里亚
is active. One or two casts of

can make a big difference.

on this boss for sure, as there is a big DPS check in the form of healing required and a timer on

The flame patches that spawn from lightning strikes affect every mob that spawns in the courtyard area. Tank the mobs in the fire patches whenever convenient.

(If the group has several purges, this may not be necessary).

is a high damage disease on a random party member, and is very dangerous if stacked. Use

to clear these out. The 3rd spell to watch for is

the number of mobs hitting you will be substantial, so use

as soon as they are all gathered to stay alive.

every 10 seconds or so. Try to move the Matron into fire in between her casts. Surprisingly, her melee attacks do significantly more damage than the barrage.
Soulbound Goliath Boss Encounter
This boss is a fun mini-game for Brewmaster of “how many stacks can you survive.” Brew has the best tank toolkit in the game for surviving the encounter so feel free to let the boss go up to 50+ stacks of
灵魂收割
in high level keys. If not using
嗜血
you may want to play it safe and soak the stacks once or twice by dragging the boss through fire. Even then, as a Brewmaster you probably only need to soak once or twice at most.
Before soaking the boss in fire, be sure
灵魂荆棘
is not about to go out and trap the healer.
Prioritize
幻灭踢
just before the boss casts
碾压
to dodge the hit. Since the boss has such a slow melee swing, lots of melee hits will be dodged as well and you should be able to plan on using
活血酒
s in advance. Have one ready just in case

hits successfully, or two melee’s land in a row.
Tank the boss in the middle circle where he spawns to avoid soaking fire early or on accident.

Heavily use

and LOS to gather the pulls in this whole area. Every pull should be brought back to a more open space to avoid frontal cleaves and traps, and to kite in general.

can be extremely useful here because of which doors might be open or closed. As an example - Set your spirit down in the courtyard, use a

to gather the whole pig room and then
魂体双分
back outside to safely gather everything (even if the door to the courtyard is closed). After gathering the pulls, use

as the mobs funnel through a door to tightly group them together. After
平心之环
expires, run in and

for an extra delay on their casts.

: the smallest and maybe the most dangerous mob in the whole area.

casts on random targets but when stacked will deal heavy magic damage. When pulling the mobs initially, this is one reason to

back through a wall to avoid several casts of spit. As the maggots come around the corner use

to delay the casts even more. If going for even more damage reduction, LOS the casts behind a corner. If and when you are targeted by 4-5 spit casts at once, roll out of the pack and channel

to survive the damage. Interrupt

if ever possible. If it gets off, the new maggots do not burst or bolster though.

Raal the Gluttonous Boss Encounter
Stand right on the bosses belly to avoid the poison puddles. This inner ring is sometimes the only safe space left to stand while tanking. Try to never leave melee range in case the boss immediately casts

: More dangerous than the boss itself, the oozes hurt and are awkward to tank while keeping your front facing both the boss and the oozes. Hold a

for a few seconds if the oozes are about to spawn, so you have something to pick up threat with.

is good to have on this encounter as a tool to pick up the slimes without leaving melee range.
暴捶
is dodge-able and shouldn’t be worried too much about. You should still move out of the way when convenient though.

defensively on the oozes, as well as keeping the servents slightly away from the boss.
Lord and Lady Waycrest
Trash Mobs in the Area
Heading downstairs toward Lord and Lady Waycrest there are more of the same types of mobs with a couple slightly different witches mixed in.

: Skip the Matron if possible, but if need be watch out for

which will significantly ramp up damage taken as a Brewmaster. Interrupt

This is a very high tank damage fight, have all defensive cooldowns available for the 3rd and final phase.
On higher level tyrannical keys, use

on pull and then a second time when Lady Waycrest joins the fight.
Save a

until after the

hits and ticks once or twice. Don’t be afraid to use

when dipping low after wasting strike if about to die, it will give the healer more time to top you off.

Gorak Tul Boss Encounter
Tank the boss where he spawns, and

each add when they spawn.
The

adds will leap to a party member and then channel
死亡棱镜
. The cast needs to be disrupted every time, so coordinate use of abilities that are able to do so.
Use

and
分筋错骨
to disrupt death lens. If the group has one more disrupt/stun, use that to fill in when Brewmaster abilities are on cooldown. As of patch 8.1, most stuns also work for this mechanic, including
扫堂腿
. If there is no disrupt available, the group needs to focus down the slaver add at that moment.
Be sure to interrupt
黑暗闪电
every time. One 15-second cooldown interrupt can take care of each cast.
Use defensive cooldowns when several slaver adds are actively attacking.
