BigWigs Boss Mods (BW) and its suite of addons (LittleWigs and Capping) provide comprehensive, efficient, and fully customizable encounter information including timer bars, audio and visual alerts, and specific encounter tools and resources for most types of combat in World of Warcraft including dungeons, raids, and PvP. In this guide, we'll cover all the features and utilities of BigWigs as well as how to customize the addon to better suit your user interface and boost your performance.
What addons do I need?
As I mentioned earlier, BigWigs is a suite of addons; nearly all of the core functionality comes from BigWigs Boss Mods, but there are additional plugins and addons that hook into BigWigs to provide additional features and customization. Typically, the current expansion raid content (and some upcoming content) is included in the BigWigs Boss Mods addon. Previous expansion content is separated into individual plugins. Below is a general list of addons that fall into the BigWigs suite as well as some notes as to what each addon provides. I've also included some fun plugins that provide additional customization. Boss mods are routinely updated, so be sure to update your addons frequently for the most accurate information and latest features.
Please Note: The only required addon is BigWigs Boss Mods.

Core Features and Customization
BigWigs is both a comprehensive and efficient boss mod. Part of that efficiency is how lightweight the addon is in terms of consuming precious system resources but also efficient in regards to how little setup is required to get the addon working for you. In fact, the addon comes pre-programmed with the options enabled that the developer has deemed the most useful and universal for everyone. All encounters are setup with default settings that should provide the necessary information required to tackle the encounter right out of the box.
BigWigs is also fully customizable. You can completely change which abilities you see notifications for as well as emphasize those abilities that are most important, abilities that you need to prepare for in regards to cooldowns or positioning, or just abilities that keep killing you over and over. In addition, you can completely customize what these notifications look or sound like and where you see them.
To access the options interface for BigWigs just type "/bw" into your chat window and the interface will open. Additionally you can click the BigWigs minimap icon.
As we go through the individual modules, please note that you can fine tune the positioning of each through their particular options menu, but it's also possible to check and change positioning of each type of notification simply by toggling BigWigs' anchors and creating test bars. This allows you to fine tune your BigWigs without having to enter raid combat. Both options will be at the top of the BigWigs options interface as seen below.
Anchor locations for various BigWigs modules
To get started let's look at the core features of BigWigs and how to customize their appearance.
Timer Bars
The most universal way to utilize BigWigs is in helping to navigate the wide array of mechanics that encounters will throw at you. Most encounter abilities and mechanics in PvE are scripted; these events typically happen at specific times. As such, BigWigs is able to provide timer bars so that you more adequately prepare for a mechanic prior to it actually occurring. Why is that information valuable? To answer that let's consider how the various roles could take that information and apply that to their gameplay.
Tanks - Defensive cooldowns and resources are finite; once they're depleted it will take some time for them to come off cooldown or refresh, so it's best to use them during the deadliest parts of the encounter both to ensure that you live as well as reduce the healing required by your healers to keep you alive. Timers can then help you predict the most dangerous parts of the encounter and coordinate with your co-tank, healers, etc. how to most effectively utilize your defensive abilities.
Healers - Similarly to tanks, healing cooldowns and mana are finite. While you might be able to heal through a large damage event without a major healing cooldown, the necessary healing will take a large toll on your mana and therefore your ability to heal at full strength at later parts of the encounter. Effectively predicting when damage will occur and on what players will better help you prepare and react appropriately. In addition knowing when there will be a lull in mechanics can help you time a valuable
魔力洪流药水
.
DPS - Pooling resources or saving cooldowns for problematic enemy spawns or enemy vulnerability phases can be critical to not only maximizing your damage but also reducing incoming damage on your raid or party.
Everyone - A lot of mechanics are either completely avoidable or mitigable via a defensive or positioning. Knowing where to be and when can simplify a lot of mechanics and open up a lot of the area during encounters.
Timer Bars (blue left) and Emphasized Timer Bars (red right) for start of the Eonar, the Life-Binder encounter
As seen above, BigWigs uses two sets of timer bars, a regular set and an emphasized set. The regular set will be for long-term events throughout the fight. The events from the regular set will move to the emphasized set when they are within 6-20 seconds of occurring (based on an option you set) or any abilities that you wish to emphasize in the specific encounter options. For me, I typically place these two sets in different locations of my screen; regular set in a corner of my screen that I can still see but not in a prime location as they're usually not impending, and the emphasized set more centrally located typically just below my character model as to better respond to impending mechanics.
Global Timer Bars General Options
The general options for timer bars as seen above are relatively straightforward and apply to both Regular bars and Emphasized bars. Here you can modify the appearance of the bar text as well as the alignment. The texture can also be changed to including custom textures added by other addons. Most options in BigWigs will come with a small tooltip to better explain what each item will do and as always you can create a Test Bar to check how each feature has changed BigWigs' appearance.
Global Timer Bars Regular Set (top) and Emphasized Set Options (bottom)
Above you can see the options tabs for Regular Bars and Emphasized Bars. The Regular Bars options allows for fine tuning of the positioning and size of the Regular Bars as well as the growth direction from the anchor point for subsequent bars. The Emphasized Bars options are very similar with a few notable exceptions. You can now select the time remaining when Regular Bars become emphasized. Additionally, you can uncheck the Move option and it will cause the Regular Bars to stay at their anchor but multiply in size. Another possibly confusing option is the Restart customization; essentially this will completely fill the bar again so it'll be a countdown from when it became emphasized instead of it's total countdown.
Timer Bars Clickable Options
Finally, a neat feature of BigWigs is the ability to perform clickable commands on timer bars in-combat that will allow you to customize future bars messages without needing to go to the individual boss encounter. While disabled and by default all BigWigs bars are click-through meaning if you accidentally click on any of them in combat you won't accidentally move them or close them and you'll still be able to perform your normal mouse functions. However, if you enable Clickable Bars, BigWigs Bars can intercept certain mouse clicks on bars with or without modifiers to perform special actions such as reporting timers in chat, temporarily removing or emphasizing a timer, or permanently disabling a timer. This option offers a quick way to relay information to those without a Boss Mod as well as personalize your encounters without having to go to the options of each individual boss.
Encounter Warnings
Encounter Warnings are the other major reason to install a boss mod addon. Encounter warnings or messages are another way to alert the player to mechanics that might not happen at regular intervals or require you to interact with the world in order to overcome. They can also be used in conjunction with timer bars to give the player more information in how to deal with a particular ability. For instance, a fight requires you to line of sight behind a pillar or wall in order to avoid damage or a crowd control effect. While the timer bar can alert you to roughly when the ability is happening, it's typically not enough to tell you how to manage the mechanic. Encounter warnings can relay more information almost instantaneously and draw your attention to something that you might not have realized till it's too late. Accidentally step in some fire on the ground? These warnings will alert you so you can avoid taking any additional damage.
Encounter Message Warning Example
Above is an example of what Encounter Warning Messages will look like. For quick reference I left the anchor toggles on so you can better identify each type. You'll notice that these messages have similar designations to timer bars such as Messages and Emphasized Messages with a third type being Emphasized countdown. Messages are standard alert text with a low to medium priority. Emphasized are important alerts that typically require immediate action or special actions to overcome the mechanic. Countdowns can be enabled on virtually any ability where a simple timer bar isn't enough. Countdowns have no requirement for a message to be emphasized. You can adjust how each mechanic is prioritized on a per boss basis. See the
Customizing BigWigs for Each Individual Encounter
section for more information.
Global Encounter Warning Messages Options General (top) and Emphasized (bottom)
The option interfaces above allow you to customize the text warnings. The General options are general font and appearance customizations as well as the message growth for subsequent messages based on the anchor point. You'll also be able to choose for how long the message will display (Display time) and after it's displayed how long it will take to fade out (Fade time) to ensure you don't miss a single warning. For Emphasized Messages options, it's very similar in regards to font and display options. The main option here is at how soon till a mechanic occurs to begin the Countdown (in seconds).
Global Message Warnings Output Options
The final set of options specifically for Encounter warnings allow you to change where those messages are output for both types of messages. I would traditionally keep them set to their regular default designations, but if you have another addon that handles warning type messages such as a combat text addon like xCT+ then you can output them there. It's even possible to output those messages to the Blizzard raid warning window, but note that only you will see these messages .
Global Timer Bars and Message Warnings Color Options
As a final set of customization to Encounter Warning Messages and Timer Bars, you may edit any of the colors of either of the core features. Modifying them in the Colors section will change the global values that all mechanics will use unless otherwise personalized on a boss and mechanic basis. See the
Customizing BigWigs for Each Individual Encounter
section for more information. From this options pane you can reset the global values to the default values if you've made changes to this pane of colors by hitting Reset. You can clear all color modifications you've made to individual encounter abilities to the colors listed here by hitting Reset All.
Two other types of Encounter Warnings not shown in any of the above sections are Says and Sounds. Says are messages printed in say chat that alert others around you if you have a specific ability. It is especially helpful if you have chat bubbles enabled as you'll be able to see others say messages without looking at your chat log. As an example, BigWigs will print say messages if you get either the
海洋之赐
/
天空之赐
debuffs during the Argus encounter so that you can position the orbs accordingly.
Sounds are another layer of warnings that work in tandem with visual indicators to alert players to mechanics and abilities. Because these warnings are auditory, it's more likely you'll be alerted to danger when learning new encounters compared to relying on visual reminders alone since new fights are typically visual overloads already.
Global Sound Options
The sound options above allow you to customize sounds to particular types of alerts. To change a sounds just click the dropdown menu. To preview the sound use the sound icon on the right in the dropdown menu. If you miss a particular type of alert with some frequency, feel free to add a more attention grabbing sound. These global settings will be the default for all warning messages of that particular type. You can modify individual mechanics to use specific sounds based on that mechanics specific setting. See the
Customizing BigWigs for Each Individual Encounter
section for more information. As an aside, I linked some more fun countdown options for BigWigs earlier in the
What Addons Do I Need section
. You can change your countdown to these more fun sounds to personalize your experience. There's nothing quite like Abathur counting down your demise!
Customizing BigWigs for Each Individual Encounter
We've explored the two major core features for BigWigs and how to globally customize them to fit your general encounter needs. With BigWigs we can take that customization a step further and customize the alerts and timer bars on a mechanic specific level.
Boss Selection, Statistics, and Abilities
As seen above, at the top left of the BigWigs interface, you can select either Raid Bosses or Dungeon Bosses to get a list of expansions. By clicking the +, you'll get a list of instances within that expansion. Upon clicking the instance name, you'll receive mechanic and ability information for the first boss of that instance. At the top right of that new section, you'll see a drop down menu allowing you to select a particular boss encounter or even a general section for Trash in that instance. For our example, we'll be looking at the Varimathras encounter but other boss sections will be similar with their options.
At the top of the encounter listing, you'll see a Statistics section. The number of wipes, number of kills, and best kill time will be listed for that particular encounter at the various difficulty levels. While not particularly helpful, it is sometimes interesting to see how many attempt it took to kill a particular boss.
Below statistics, you'll seen a listing of the mechanics and abilities of that particular fight organized by phase, difficulty, or just general boss ability. In this example you'll see a General section and a Mythic section. At the very bottom of this section if you scroll down far enough you'll also see a "List abilities in group chat" button which lists the abilities with full links to the Dungeon Journal in the relevant group chat. It can be quite helpful to those who may not have read the Dungeon Journal to have this info quickly accessible to them.
Let's look at a specific ability to understand how we might further customize BigWigs. For our example, let's look at the Shadow Strike ability. To open the options for a specific ability, click the >> button on the right side of the ability listing.
Ability/Mechanic Advanced Options (top), Colors (mid), Sounds (bottom)
Upon clicking the ability listing, you'll notice that we've moved to another pane with some general options at the top as well as three tabs listed below. The first option allows us to enable the alerts for this ability just like the previous pane would have. The next option allows us to enable the alerts of this ability but only for Tank roles.
In the advanced options tab as seen in the first image above, we're able to customize what alerts we see for this particular ability whether it's a timer bar or warning messages. We can also limit it to only when a particular mechanic is on the player. If we're having particular trouble reacting or preparing for a mechanic, I highly recommend emphasizing and/or adding a countdown to better focus. The remaining two tabs allow us to override the global options of colors and sound to offset and better identify particular mechanics.
As mentioned previously most encounters will by default have the best setup for alerts as deemed by the developer, but if you find there's too many alerts or not pronounced enough ones then this interface will allow you better control over your boss mod.
Additional Features and Customization
While the core features are the typical reasons for using a boss mod, BigWigs has packed a lot of additional features into it that range from aiding in encounter positioning and organization to really awesome quality of life modifications.
Range Indicator
Several abilities require players to spread out from one another and BigWigs is here to help with that too with it's Proximity Range Indicator. Typically abilities with these requirements will automatically cause the Proximity indicator to popup on combat start, but you can also manually set a spread range by typing "/range #" into chat where # is the number of yards you'd like to be spread out. While this use to be a full radar where you could determine another players exact location according to your position, the information BigWigs and other addons are able to get has been severely reduced by Blizzard. As such this will merely list names of other players that are roughly within the set range of you. When a new player enters your proximity, BigWigs will play a sound notification. I recommend that you set the range to be slightly larger than the mechanic requires so you have a bit of wiggle room before the mechanic triggers.
Proximity Range Indicator Options
As with most features, you can customize the Range Indicator in the Proximity menu of BigWigs. You can rearrange the appearance and positioning of the range indicator as well as the sound and various information provided. I highly recommend locking the window when you're finished customizing the interface to avoid it intercepting mouse clicks in combat.
Alternate Power
Certain encounters will have an alternate power mechanic and managing this power is a core part to overcoming the fight. As an example, the primary mechanic of Demonic Inquisition of Tomb of Sargeras is managing
折磨
. While this is really easy to do on an individual basis, the Alternate Power Display will show you the current
折磨
levels for all players making it easy to identify which players should cleanse their
折磨
by rotating into the confession phase as well as those who may need extra healing if they're unable to Confess right away.
Alternate Power Display Options
Options for modifying the Alternate Power Display are fairly limited to positioning and font alone, but it's an excellent tool regardless, especially for raid leaders. I highly recommend locking the window when you're finished customizing the interface to avoid it intercepting mouse clicks in combat. Turning on/off the alternate power display can be done on an encounter specific basis. See the
Customizing BigWigs for Each Individual Encounter
section for more information.
Miscellaneous Info Box
Miscellaneous Info Box
The final alert section that might appear with BigWigs is the InfoBox. While that's not terribly descriptive, this module is typically reserved for mechanics that aren't easily tracked by any of the previous modules but still relay some necessary information. As an example of what information you can expect, Mythic Aggramar's combination of attacks during
泰沙拉克剑技
is a random set of a few possible combinations. After the first attack lands, BigWigs is able to determine which set of attacks is being done and can display the order so that you may better position and survive the assault.
Player Markers
Some encounters have mechanics that will target specific players. Many times this will be debuffs that need to be moved away from the other members of the raid or party. To better identify these players BigWigs allows you to mark those players with specific icons.
Miscellaneous Info Box
The global options for icons can be set, but many times specific encounter abilities will have preset icons listed in their individual boss sections, especially if the mechanic requires more than 2 markers. You can also coordinate these to the raid markers that you can place down to better indicate where a player might go if targeted by the specific mechanic.
Pull, Break, and Custom Timer Bars
We've covered nearly everything you can customize about the timer bars for specific mechanics already listed by BigWigs, but what about custom timers we'd like to create for our own uses. Those are absolutely possible in BigWigs as well.
Pull Timers
Pull timers are a staple feature for most organized and random raid and dungeon groups. Coordinating combat initiation is crucial to pre-potting and cooldown timing to maximize your raids damage. The short line of code below (where # is in seconds) will initiate a pull down timer complete with timer bar and countdowns.
/pull #
Pull Timer Options
It wouldn't be BigWigs without a few extra bells and whistles to accompany a simple pull timer. You can completely customize the timer bar with additional start and end sounds as well as a countdown voice that's entirely different than the global option you've set for the rest of BigWigs. Additionally, BigWigs can initiate combat logging at the start of the pull timer and automatically stop it when combat ends. Never miss a boss pull or combat log again with BigWigs.
Break Timers
If your raid takes a short break at some point during the night or perhaps your M+ group takes a short break between each dungeon, it never fails that at least one person is always late coming back by a couple of minutes. With BigWigs you can set a break timer using the code below (where # is a number in minutes). This probably won't stop someone from coming back late, but they won't have any excuses about when they were supposed to be back. Generated break timers will display across all your characters, so you can log to different characters during the break and still see the time remaining.
/break #
Pull and break timers are completely cross compatible with Deadly Boss Mods (DBM).
Custom Timers
If you're looking to create a completely custom Timer Bar either for the entirety of your raid or just yourself, then BigWigs can accommodate your need.
To send a custom timer bar to your entire raid use the following code (where # is time in seconds and name is the name you want to give to the timer):
/raidbar # name
Note: requires raid lead or assist
To create a custom timer bar for your own personal use that no one else will see use the following code (where # is time in seconds and name is the name you want to give to the timer):
/localbar # name
Auto-Reply and Auto-Block
If you're like me, you regularly zone everything but the current encounter out while raiding or dungeoning. I regularly miss whispers and messages from friends. One way to help inform your friends of your current preoccupation is to turn on BigWigs Auto-replies.
Auto-Reply (top) and Auto Block Options (bottom)
These replies automatically message players with as much or as little information as you'd like and BigWigs can send different replies based on whether someone is a friend/guildie or the competition looking to see how close you are to a kill. You can customize what they receive at the time of messaging as well as when you leave combat. I've also used this to check how much time I have before I have to come in for the next boss if I'm currently sitting.
Another similar option is a feature that allows BigWigs to block several annoyances that can be distracting during combat.
Version Check
Developers routinely update BigWigs and its suite of addons almost on a daily basis, especially with new content. If you find a timer or alert to be noticeably off, updated alerts might already be available for download. Additionally, if any players don't seem to have a specific ability listed in an encounter that others do or the timer varies between different players then they might be on different versions of BigWigs.
To check the versions of fellow players in your party or raid use the following code:
/bwv
Profile System
To complement all the comprehensive and customizable features, BigWigs allows players to set profiles for different characters as well as different specs. I typically find that I like my setup to be universal over all my characters, but if you'd like to personalize your BigWigs experience on a per spec or character basis then by all means go for it.
