This guide will teach you how to set up basic and advanced keybinds in World of Warcraft. Good keybinds can enhance your gameplay, and unfortunately the game does not do a good job at explaining keybinds, or suggesting that you change any of them. While playing with 1 - 9 was fine in Classic, you will probably need a few more useful buttons to do your rotation in Shadowlands.
Keybinding vs. Clicking?
A keybind is a shortcut for you to use an action, which can be a spell, macro, item, etc. This allows you to use your mouse cursor purely for targeting, and moving your camera instead of it being occupied by having to constantly hover over your action bar to find the next spell to click.
While clicking certain spells, such as hearthstone, mount, food, or other out of combat actions is fine, absolutely no action that you might have to use in combat should be clicked. Clicking spells will result in a large overall loss in the number of abilities you will be able to use in combat. Even if you know your class's action priority perfectly, you will never be able to compete with a person who uses keybinds for their actions, if all else equal. This makes keybinding extremely important as a fundamental for improving your gameplay experience.
Getting Started
Playing with new keybinds can be overwhelming if you’ve been used to playing with the default, or keybinds you set up years ago. Lots of players who try to make new keybinds end up reverting to their old ones after a while, because they feel overwhelmed. So the first step is making a plan that will work for you to transition your keybinds.
There are a few ways of approaching this issue. You can either change your keybinds slowly over time, with changing a few keybinds a week and giving yourself time to adjust, or you can change all of them and force yourself to get used to them by never clicking an ability again until you get used to the new setup. The second way is certainly faster, but will result in slightly frustrating gameplay at the beginning, since it will feel like learning a whole new game, where you will have to look at your keybinds each time before pressing an ability. It can take weeks, if not longer, to get used to a keybind overhaul, so be patient.
The Keybinding Principle
Later in this guide, I will cover how to set up an MMO-Mouse as well, but for now, we will focus on your keyboard. Setting up keybinds should follow a logic that makes sense to you. While I can share how I set mine up, and you can follow the same logic, I cannot give you specific instructions on what spell should go on what exact keybind. That will be something you should experiment with, and follow what makes sense to you, because that will allow you to get used to new binds faster.
My keybinds are set up following a very simple logic. The more often a spell is used, the closer it should be to my movement keys, and vice versa. For example, rotational abilities that I use several times a minute are set up around my
WASD
keys, while abilities that I press once every few minutes are set up further away, or set with modifier keys, which I will cover later in this guide.
Movement
Before you start moving abilities around, let’s make the most basic change, which will help your movement, and free up two crucial keybinds. Go into your
Key Binding
menu, and under the
“Movement Keys”
tab, change your
“Strafe Left”
key to
“A”
and your
“Strafe Right”
key to
“D”
. Having those two buttons bound to “Turn Left/Right” causes you to have to hold Mouse Button 2 in order to strafe, or have extra keybinds set up. While this change will feel weird at first, it is the most important change you should make to how you move your character.
“S”
has been a controversial keybind for
“Move Backward”
or
“Backpeddle.
” Especially in the PvP community, many players recommend completely getting rid of it and using it for a spell, because in PvP there is virtually no reason to ever move backward, since it is slower than strafing. While this might be true, in PvE there are several situations where making micro-adjustments to your positioning tends to be easier if you move backwards, instead of strafing.
Movement Keys
Basic Keybinds
Using some of these keybinds will mean having to move their previous functionality to a new key. I recommend using keys on the right side of your keyboard, or numbers you can’t reach while keeping your hand on your movement keys. Most of these keybinds will open different menus, which you will typically not use during combat.
Q, E, R, F, 1, 2, 3, 4
- These are the best keybinds for rotational abilities that you will be pressing several times during an encounter, as well as abilities you need to be able to press fast, such as your Interrupt.
Core Rotational Abilities
T, G, Z, X, C, V, B, 5, Tilda (`)
- While most people can reach these keys, they might have to move their fingers off the movement keys, so I recommend placing spells that you might only use once in a while on these keys. Great examples for these are extra action buttons, covenant abilities, trinkets, combat potions, etc.
Using C, V, or B as a push-to-talk keybind for Discord is also really good, because 99% of the time, your thumb is only resting on the Spacebar and not actually pressing any functional keys.
Abilities with longer cooldowns and Utility spells
TAB
- By default this will be the “Target Next Enemy” bind, which I recommend you keep. When switching between 2 targets, it can be very useful. However, if there are more than 2 targets it becomes unreliable.
CAPS LOCK
- You can go in your keyboards software to remap this key to something else. This key is very convenient, and unless you’re always yelling at people, you shouldn’t need easy access to the CAPS LOCK function.
Modifiers
Modifiers are keys that allow you to use a combination of keys as a keybind. The three usable modifiers are
SHIFT
,
CTRL
, and
ALT
. You can keybind abilities as a “combo”, by pressing the modifier, then the key you want. As an example, you can keybind
"F"
to a specific spell, then keybind
"Shift+F"
to a completely different one.
I tend to keep it as simple as possible with modifiers, and try to have as few of my abilities on a modifier combination as possible. For example, I typically use SHIFT as a modifier for abilities to be used on my Focus target. So if my interrupt is bound to
"F"
, then pressing
"SHIFT+F"
will cast my Interrupt on my Focus target. For spells that you don’t need a Focus variation of, you can freely use
SHIFT
, or the other modifiers, as new keybinds for different abilities.
Modifiers
Examples of spells that are typically used with modifier keybinds are offensive/defensive abilities that have long cooldowns, utility potions, utility spells, etc.
MMO/Gaming Mouse
There are two main types of Gaming mice, with the first one being the typical 5 - 6 button mouse, which has 2 extra buttons on the side, and one behind the scroll wheel. The second type is the MMO mice, which tend to have 12 buttons on the side panel, and two buttons behind the scroll wheel. MMO mice have become very popular in WoW, because they essentially add 12+ available keybinds.
These are the two main types of mice used in WoW.
Regardless of the type of mouse you use, some of these keybinds will be universal, while others can only be used on MMO mice. Keep in mind that blank keybinds on a mouse, or binds that are connected to the mouse's software typically need to be remapped in the
“Actions”
tab of your software. You can use any
NumPad
keys (right side of your keyboard), just make sure your
NumLock
is turned
ON
, or any special character keys that are not used for anything by default.
You can also use the Function keys
(F1 - F12)
, but be careful with these, because if you bind something to F4, and use ALT as a modifier, you might be in for a bad time.
Scroll Wheel Up/Down
- By default, this is bound to camera zoom in/out, but this is a prime bind that can be used for something else.
Middle Mouse Wheel Click
- Good bind to have, if you do not have Scroll Wheel up/down bound. If you do, I don’t recommend using this keybind, as you might accidentally scroll while pressing down on the wheel.
Mouse Button 3 & 4
- Usually located on the side of your mouse, these are great binds for rotational abilities if you do not have an MMO mouse.
Mouse button 5 and/or 6
- Button located behind the scroll wheel, typically reserved for DPI switching. I’ve never swapped the DPI of my mouse on the fly, so using this as an actual keybind tends to be much more practical.
Side Mouse Panel 1 - 12
- By default the side panel of most mice will be bound to numbers 1 through = on your keyboard. In most situations you can leave this as default, but if you’re used to pressing some of those buttons with your keyboard hand, then they can be remapped. Since you will be pressing all 12 of these keys with your thumb, you also need to establish a priority on your mouse. My thumb usually rests on the first column of buttons
(1 - 3)
, so these will be my most used binds, containing rotational abilities. The further back on the mouse I move, the less important those binds become. This is because they are harder to press, because I need to move my thumb, and are also harder to distinguish from each other, because they are surrounded by other buttons.

Tips and Tricks
Make sure your keybinds make sense to you, so you can use a system where even if you don’t remember the bind for an ability, you know what it should be bound to. As an example, my offensive cooldowns are bound in the order of which I press them in combat. If during my opener I press a 3 button sequence, then those three abilities will also be sequential on my keyboard. So ability 1 would be on
"Q"
, ability 2 on
"E"
, and ability 3 on
"R"
. This is just an example of a system I use to simplify my binding process.
Use similar keybinds across multiple characters. If you play more than one character, make sure you have a logic to the way you set up binds on all these, which will allow you to easily get used to new binds. For example, I have my interrupt key bound to
"F"
on all my characters, so when I play one character, then log over to another I don’t have to think about what key my interrupt was on. Same goes for my offensive and defensive cooldowns, they are all bound to the same keys on all my characters.
This logic can be extended to pretty much every spell, as long as there is any similarity between another spell on your main character. For example, as an Unholy DK pressing Outbreak applies my maintenance dot, so on my Destruction Warlock I have Immolate bound to the same button, because those two abilities serve very similar purposes.

I think showing people how to bind keys is a good idea!
It should be noted that efficient binding is heavily dependent on class/spec and role of the toon in question, as well as the actual player (hand sizes and ability to reach keys),and his or her keyboard.
Good binding can help preventing RSI, while other configurations could very much cause overreaching and so forth, which is not good news for you if you intend to play for extended periods of time.
Keep in mind that some keyboards have more or less space between Fn keys than others, which can make them either your best friends or your worst enemies, that not all layouts are the same, etc, and you'll be good to go!
Note to the author: you might want to update the guide to reflect BfA prepots ;)

Is there a way to add 2nd set of keybinds on mouse when my 1st set of 12 thumb buttons is full?

I'm sorry for being so ignorant, but exactly HOW does one assign a particular key to an action? Thank you!

On your mouse, be very careful not to use modifiers with the same keys that your main actionbar keys are using. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 0 are my main attack spells. My side mouse buttons are CTRL+1, CTRL+2, CTRL+3, CTRL+4, CTRL+5, CTRL+6, and so on.
So while my left hand is mashing the number 1 key, my right hand is on my mouse and it presses the button that is set to CTRL+6.
However, my CTRL+6 key didn't go off when I did that, the side mouse key that was bound with CTRL+1 went off instead. During a raid boss fight, I ended up spirit shaping forward off the platform to my death when all I was trying to do was shoot cobra shot with my left hand and sent my pet to a new target using a "petattack +dash" macro with my right hand. This happened for awhile killing me many times with different side buttons going off each time.
What kept happening, that you can probably see, was my left hand was hitting a number 1 key, and my right hand was hitting a shift+6 key, but they were connecting together instead and I ended up with shift+1 going off and a 6 by itself that never went off because shift 1 activated the global cd. Whatever number I'm hitting with my left hand, ends up adding to the shift in my mouse's keybind.
Find some keys for the mouse that you are not using anywhere else even with a modifier.

Rather than blowing off a backwards-key entirely I'd think it reasonable to assign it to
Disengage
or
(boomkin) Wild Charge
.
Other than this, yeah, I'm in love with keybinds. I made a number of things I do
want
binds for, but don't want to hit accidentally, to instead use bindings with two meta-keys plus perhaps the usual character. This leaves a ton of unshifted keys handy for my bars.

what about F1-F4? I used them for totems when I played Shaman but now I'm worried I haven't seen it any guides
