Welcome to Wowhead's Arcane Mage guide for Arena PvP (Player vs Player), up to date for 9.2! This guide outlines the role of Arcane Mages in PvP, their strengths and weaknesses, strong compositions for Arcane Mages, and effective PvP strategies. It also includes advice on talent builds and PvP talent builds for Arcane Mages, as well as recommended gear, covenants, macros, and addons for PvP. This up-to-date guide aims to help you improve as an Arcane Mage in all aspects of arena PvP.

Arcane Mage PvP Overview
Arcane Mages are arguably the most mobile caster with two

s,

allowing them to kite, survive, and land crowd control with ease. This specialization also boasts spammable

without running out of mana quickly, decent sustained damage, and strong burst/one shot potential. What Arcane lacks in overall viability it more than makes up for in its uniqueness.
Arcane Mage Strengths in PvP
Sustain
Arcane Mages having access to

as long as they have mana means they always have access to some amount of sustained damage, only increasing with the talents/Covenants you play. This sustained damage is unfortunately limited by its one school of magic but as long as they have mana, they have damage.
Control
Although Arcane Mages risk being locked out of their only casting school when using
变形术
(rendering them unable to do damage), they still have some of the best control in the game.

(one of the few 60% slows in the game),
冰霜新星
, and
变形术
allow them to control the pace of the game and peel as needed. Their high mobility also allows them to be incredibly effective at landing crowd control on the enemy team.
Mobility
Arcane Mages have more mobility and damage evasion techniques in PvP than almost any specialization in the game.

(or the ability to blink out of stuns and a shorter alter time with

make Arcane Mages a difficult target for most classes to kill without consistent lockdown (especially melee classes).
Disruption
Arcane Mages have multiple utility spells that put them in a unique position to be incredibly disruptive to the enemy team, such as using

to keep their team out of Crowd Control, or

(not as popular anymore since you lose

) to prevent the actions of the enemy team.
Arcane Mage Weaknesses in PvP
Conditional Damage
Arcane Mages have the ability to dish out mediocre to strong burst every 45 seconds with
大法师之触
and
奥术宝珠
but unfortunately only using
气定神闲
requires some amount of casting in order to do significant burst. Most classes significant damage is instant and pulls ahead of Arcane needing to cast everything.
Stacking multiple charges of
奥术增效
can result in very strong burst, especially if paired with
奥术强化
, but unfortunately is hard to consistently pull off with the large amount of setup required (as it can be difficult to build and keep Clearcasting charges).
The most relevant problem is damage being tied to the same school of magic as their crowd control (
变形术
) meaning if they are required to cast the Arcane school to land crowd control, they are at risk for getting locked out and unable to deal out any damage in a moment of need.
Low Durability
Arcane Mages have an incredible amount of utility to avoid incoming damage and can be hard to hit. However, if an Arcane Mage gets caught in a stun or a bad position without their cooldowns to press they will die extremely fast.
Arcane Mage in Shadowlands Patch 9.2
Arcane Mage in 9.2 is ultimately looking to be more of the same. A lack of incredible changes and mediocre tier set additions means Arcane Mage will continue to suffer from poor class design decisions made in Shadowlands and struggle to be a top contender in arena.
Talents and Racials in Shadowlands Patch 9.2
Unfortunately nothing exciting to report this patch for Talents and Racials with two caveats:
News of Cross Faction Arena coming in 9.2.5 means that we can have more freedom with our Racial picks!
Secondly, it is possible with the new 4 set bonus
奥术明晰
that
奥能回响
will be a viable talent pick in the 4th row, however it will break all Crowd Control so seems highly unlikely.
Rotations and Strategy in Shadowlands Patch 9.2
Nothing of note will be changing in regards to Rotations and Strategy in 9.2 outside of the aforementioned 4 set bonus
奥术明晰
which will increase the duration of
大法师之触
by 4 seconds. Ultimately this realistically will not change anything but it does technically give you longer Touch of the Magi windows which can allow for longer burst periods.
Gear and Legendaries in Shadowlands Patch 9.2
Class tier sets and double Legendaries are exciting, but do not change a lot for Arcane Mages. They will simply be making us more powerful and buffing what we already do.
2 set -

Increases your Arcane damage dealt to enemies affected by Touch of the Magi by 10%.
4 set -
奥术明晰
Touch of the Magi's duration is increased by 4 sec and grants 25% mana regeneration for 12 sec.
Increasing the strength of our main burst setup ability is reasonable, assuming you are able to do damage on your kill target during the Touch of the Magi so the 10% increased damage is powerful; the 4 set less so. It's absolutely worthwhile at least equipping the 2 set as soon as possible.
Double Legendaries will allow us to simply equip
堕落欢愉
and
奥术轰炸
at all times.
Covenants in Shadowlands Patch 9.2
Venthyr
will still be the Covenant of choice as the
Venthyr
Legendary power
堕落欢愉
was already not a bad choice and will now allow you to play that on top of
奥术轰炸
!

Talents & Racials
Talents are an important choice in PvP. This page will take you through each of the talents and PvP talents, giving advice on which ones will best suit your playstyle and which build is currently the strongest. Racials can also be important in PvP since many offer extra crowd control or escapes. See our Racials section on this page if you are starting a new character or considering a change!
Rotations & Strategy
While rotations aren't as clear-cut in PvP, it is essential to know how to maximise your output where possible to help turn the tide of a match. Strategy is another key element of PvP that can make or break a match. Our Rotations and Strategy page covers what you need to know about your important cooldowns, using your utility to your best advantage, and even common mistakes to avoid making.
Gear
The Gear and Legendaries page of this guide covers how gear works for PvP in Shadowlands, and how to obtain gear through PvP Vendors and The Great Vault. On this page you will also find the best stat priority and what each stat does for your specialization, the best pieces of gear including legendaries, as well as which enchants and gems you should use for your gear. Covenants
Covenants are a key feature of the Shadowlands expansion. Your choice of Covenant, Soulbind, and Conduits can have a large impact on your gameplay. Learn which are the strongest for your specialization here.

Arcane Mage in Patch 9.1.5
9.1.5 is not bringing many changes to Arcane Mage and as such means the specialization will virtually remain the same with a few notable things to keep an eye out for.
The power of
三一结界
is being reduced, resulting in only a 5% stronger shield (combined) when mages press their barrier spell. This means the power of
三一结界
is solely in the three separate buffs and not in increasing durability. Whilst the power of buff protection is very significant and will still be good situationally, the power of this legendary has been significantly reduced. Ultimately this will likely result in using damage legendaries instead. (see gear for more details)
Another potentially relevant change is an 100% increase to the duration of the
死神之躯
spell (Necrolord Mage Covenant ability). Necrolord is an incredibly popular Covenant in PvP due to its durability and this buff could possibly mean it seeing some play as an Arcane Mage. This will require testing and covered on the Covenant page.
Arcane Mage remains to be a niche choice in Arena PvP but absolutely playable if the player is determined to make it work.
There are some general Mage changes and some Arcane specific changes that have come with 9.1 which should overall help increase the strength of the Arcane specialization.
Arguably most notable is the removal of the PvP talent
窃法成瘾
for both Fire and Frost mage specializations, changing the way Mage vs Mage is played. Previously, because this talent is inherently weak for Arcane (though less so if playing with a Restoration Druid) it made fighting other non-Arcane Mages fairly one sided. They would simply save Spellsteal for whenever it was beneficial to them (stealing Arcane Power, shields, or stealing back Combustion) and leaving you to slowly work it back one spell a time. This is no longer an option for rival Mages meaning a lot of freedom opens up in the mirror. You can feel much more comfortable pressing your important stealable buffs without threat of instantly being removed by the enemy Mage. This means two additional things. #1 - if playing with a Restoration Druid into another Mage specialization, it may be worthwhile playing Kleptomania yourself in order to help protect your buffs/healing over time effects even further, or to even use it aggresively in regards to Triune Shields or Combustion. #2 - In the Arcane mirror, if playing with Resto Druids, it is likely going to be best to both play Kleptomania and participate in the well known Fire vs Fire metagame.
Another important change specific to Arcane is the addition of the talent
奥能之球
. This is an interesting add - a 4 second channeled ability that builds up to do more damage the longer you channel, able to release at any moment. It is interruptable, and when interrupted/cancelled/ceased sends the "arcanosphere" in a quick trajectory the direction your character is facing. When it connects with opponents it also knocks them back. This ability if casted and cancelled instantly does almost no damage, but if channeled to full has the potential to 100-0 enemy players. On top of this, you can retroactively press
奥术强化
when the sphere is travelling
before
it connects to your target to gain the damage bonus. Some very interesting strategies will be derived from this talent.
A straightforward change made was a 20% buff to our
奥术冲击
damage modifier. Fairly simple, will hopefully give the specialization the ability to do meaningful damage while casting.
The PvP talent Dampened Magic was removed, but we no longer have room for this PvP talent in any case.
The additional covenant specific legendary powers added are unlikely to be used at all for Arcane in PvP with the exception of
堕落欢愉
, covered more in the Gear section.
Overall, Arcane is performing better in 9.1 as it does more damage but still suffers from a lot of the same issues as in 9.0.
Rejoice! The Venthyr covenant ability
折磨之镜
now grants Arcane Mages Clearcasting procs every time it triggers, instead of mana! This is a fantastic change and buffs our already best in slot covenant which means Venthyr is officially the way to go.
Unfortunately, outside of this nothing across the board is changing for Arcane. The other changes to covenants and legendaries do not change anything for the specialization.

is still the best defensive legendary pick and

remains the go-to 90% of the time for all around consistency when you do not have issues with survival.
Arcane has great survivability and somewhat decent sustained damage in the arena, but still severely lacks any form of instant crowd control and disruption. Unfortunately with how the game functions in Shadowlands (strength of spells like Intervene and hybrid healing) Arcane will suffer for the duration of the expansion unless deep class/talent changes are made.
The best option to find success remains finding an extremely high consistent damage class (Warrior, Windwalker, Ret etc.) and trying to live as long as possible while landing what crowd control you can, eventually winning the game.
