Hello, Durendil here. A few months ago, I realized that Garothi was 3-mannable when a dps friend of mine wanted to try his Tank spec a little. I started strategizing on how each boss could be 3-manned - it was a nice intellectual and theorycrafting exercise while I farmed the gear for my next solos. During that time, the top paladin soloer Rextroy came to the same conclusion. Since we were both alliance and EU, we contacted each other and decided that this could be fun.
A couple of months later, with dedication and wipes, we managed to meet our goal - quite surprisingly for me, since my two worries were self-healing and solo tanking on fights where 2 dps were needed for the enrage. But Rextroy was the perfect partner, since a top paladin tank is both tank and healer, and for the third we managed to find a very versatile player (Yenko). I also managed to use hunter soloing tricks - pet tanking and management, utility, feign death. So it really felt more like soloing (but with other people) rather than raiding.
Player
Durendil is one of the top 2 hunter soloers, and has been soloing since Wrath of The Lich King (8 years). He has a
channel
and a
twitter
. For more information on hunter kills and soloing, check
hunter soloing guide
.
Rextroy is the leading Paladin Soloer and has been soloing for more than 6 years, since Cataclysm. He has a
youtube channel
.
DarkSatan (bosses 1-5) is a more casual soloer and has a few videos on his
channel
. Yenko (bosses 6-11) isn't a soloer, he's just very good and adaptable, playing 16 max level characters.
If you enjoy this content, you may be interested in soloing - check out the end of
my overview of soloing
for a list of known soloers.
First 5 bosses
For the first 5 bosses, we had a fixed comp: Durendil as hunter, Rextroy as Paladin and DarkSatan as Demon Hunter.
Darksatan made a compilation video.
Rextroy made his own compilation, except for the Felhounds that got their
separate video
.
You can find Durendil's separate videos on his

Preparation
Requirements
Comp: If the tank isn't in range, he will melee any available target. As such, possible comps are 2 tanks / 1 dps, 1 tank / 2 range or one tank that can survive the
邪能轰炸
and two dps.
Damage: Berserk is 10 minutes. As such, you need around 3.1M dps, corresponding to 3.4M dps effective dps if you do not break weapons.
Survivability: Easy for tanks, for the dps they can adapt the strat to their self-healing.
Difficulty
Strategy design: I had already tried to duo this boss, so I already knew about the apocalypse drive trick. This was a one-shot.
Strategy execution: Nothing hard here. Tanks could increase their dps by managing the bombardment well.
The fight
There are two ways to do this boss:
Normal way:
灼热弹幕
damage will focus on the few players, so it will hurt a lot. But it's faster if the dps can survive it.
Not breaking weapons: if you do not interrupt
天启引擎
and simply use a cooldown to survive it, the boss will gain
灼热弹幕
. This will also empower both weapons, but the damage you take is survivable and you have a lot of time to regen.
We did the second strat because as a hunter it was easier to survive on burst than constant damage.
The fight was very easy with that strat.

Preparation
Requirements
Comp: You want two tanks here, although I could have tried pet tanking. Three tanks could also work.
Damage: Berserk is at 12 minutes, so 3.1M dps is needed.
Survivability: If you do not pack them, it's easy to survive. If you do, then you can work on your tank skills.
Difficulty
Strategy design: After a democratic vote, we decided to pack the hounds because, and I quote, "It will be fun". As such, after the first try we devised a CD rotation for survival and got the kill on the second pull.
Strategy execution: For the tanks, they had to play very well in order to survive what was Mythic damage. All while Rextroy had to also keep me alive.
The fight
We packed the hound and went ham.
For the hunter, I used my immunity on every other Siphon Corruption and had Rextroy's
破咒祝福
for the others. I also went full defensive with legendaries and tank trinkets.
For the tanks, Rextroy explains:
I would suggest the tanks go with good survival gear. Riftworld Codex worked wonders for me as a Protection Paladin. As well as the
Legendary helmet
for 2 charges on Hand of the Protector. A good mixture of haste, mastery and versa is needed. Enough Mastery for
SOTR
to feel strong but also enough haste to make the uptime good.
This boss would have been trivial if we had separated them, but keeping them packed allowed us to start interacting with each other gameplay wise and prepare for the harder fights.

WarcraftLogs
Preparation
Requirements
Comp: 2 tanks 1 dps.
Damage: Berserk is at 12 minutes, so that's 3.25M dps on the boss plus killing adds.
Survivability: tanks had little trouble staying alive, and double defensive legendaries were enough for me.
Difficulty
Strategy design: took us two tries because we used the first to try out the enrage and my survivability.
Strategy execution: there are few possible errors, so this was a rather easy boss once the setup was done.
The fight
For the tanks, they taunted at 2 stacks. I reduced damage taken by going into the pod on each fusillade. Other than that, adds were simply cleaved down.
Once you reach the second phase 3, you will stay in phase 3. It's the soft enrage of this fight since Svirax will chain cast fusillade.

Requirements
Comp: 2 tanks and one dps.
Damage: Berserk is at 12 minutes, so 3,26M dps on boss + minibosses.
Survivability: Not much to say, imps not exploding made this fight a cakewalk.
Difficulty
Strategy design: Rextroy had soloed her already with a different tactic, so we already knew the boss.
Strategy execution: Easy boss, the margin for error was there.
The fight
Tanks taunted at 2 or 3 stacks. They made sure the Paladin went into the portal since he had better interrupts.
The tanks could easily cleave the adds.
In order to optimize I grabbed a flame on the first portal and on the third made Rextroy move the mob away for

. It was probably overkill.

Requirements
Comp: pretty much anything goes as long as you can keep yourself alive.
Damage: no idea.
Survivability: pretty easy if you have a little self heal.
Difficulty
Strategy design: no idea, we did a single try in order to gather data to design the strategy and it
died
lived before we had a chance to figure out how to organize.
Strategy execution: LEEEEEEEROY JENKIIIIIINS. To be fair, Rextroy was on point with Destructor spawns and I was reacting quickly to any mob on Eonar, but we were really surprised when we won.
The fight
At first, we had Rextroy deal with the big adds with his interrupts, while DarkSatan and I AoE. Then when we had double portal spawns, we started improvising a lot. Rextroy did the hounds (we should have sent DarkSatan) while DS and I did the portal up top, but since the hounds weren't done we had to go to the bottom one without killing the Fel Lords, so I backtracked to kill the Fel Lords but wasn't there for the middle porta, so the adds reached the boss and DS and I had to dps the adds while Rextroy went to tank the next big add. Then, the portal up top spawned and DS and I went there, but I realized that there were bats on the boss so I jumped down (without my pet) and killed the bats, then rushed to the middle to tank the third big add that spawned, and then - surprise - we got loot. Yay!
If only my recording also recorded audio, it would have been comedic gold. So bravo for our improvisational skills. But this boss was too easy.

Next 3 bosses
With the first bosses easily dealt with, the real difficulty started now. We had to carefully choose our comp and devise our strategy for kills that barely made it. From this point onwards, DarkSatan took a break and Yenko (no channel) joined us.
Rextroy made a compilation video. I did separate ones, which I will link in the boss descriptions.

Logs:
WarcraftLogs
Preparation
Requirements
Comp: 2 tanks one dps. Yenko took his DK for the rez.
Damage: 11M dps, so 3.22M dps is needed. Which is extremely tight since you need two tanks and the dps will get every single sleep bomb in phase 1.
Survivability: Really hard. As a hunter I took massive damage. Tanks also took massive damage but Rextroy had to keep me alive on top of that.
Difficulty
Strategy design: this took a lot of tries in order to min-max the boss and figure out our rotations and setup.
Strategy execution: This was the first truly hard boss. A single mistake meant a death or not beating berserk, so no more margin for error.
The fight
The goal of phase one is to push him fast enough for us to beat berserk later. Sleeps would always go on me unless I was dead, in which case tanks would probably die. Moreover, while I was sleeping I took damage from the tank debuff and mines.
At the start use Hero and I prepoted
滋补药剂
. Note that the recipe isn't available since cataclysm, so you need a veteran player that did the necessary quests to craft it for you. When the potion is over, I used my immunity. Then Rextroy used
乌瑟尔的守护
(considered the worst legendary right now for prot pala) to immune two sleeps with Spellwarding. Potion was back up for the next 30 seconds.
Once I was asleep, Rextroy did his best to keep me alive, despite the tank debuff really hurting because of the damage increase. Tanks tried to tank as long as possible because I took damage for every tank with stacks, independently of the number of stacks. He also had to react to mine spawns (I could tank 1 or 2), and pray I didn't get knocked off the platform. Then once Turtle was about to be up I died. It wasn't planned, but it should have been - a rez later, I could turtle next and then the Paladin used Spellwarding again.
If we didn't have a battle rez, I think we should have gone with Spellwarding first, then turtle, then once Spellwarding is up again use it to immune two in a row so I can turtle again.
In order to make up for lost dps, I equipped only one survivability legendary - making Rextroy's job a little harder but allowing us to kill the boss.
Being a hunter allowed my pets to keep doing 127K dps with auto-hits, netting us 6-7 seconds.
After that, we did the normal strategy trying to beat berserk. We got him with only 5 seconds to spare. And we got a taste of what 3-manning this raid would really require.

Preparation
Requirements
Comp: we went 2 tanks 1 dps, but Rextroy could have solo tanked easily, making the fight easier.
Damage: Berserk is 13 minutes, although it is survivable for a short while. That's 3.5M dps, however adds have 7.7% of boss health and deal 6% damage on boss, but they also have increased damage taken, and you can cleave. So it's complicated. Let's just say he requires less dps than Immonar and later bosses. You mainly want to be able to keep up with adds, hence why 2 dps should be better.
Survivability: pretty easy here. If you want to avoid boss damage, you can also qui melee range, he'll deal very little damage from his AoE smash if left with no target.
Difficulty
Strategy design: it took us a couple of tries to fix the order for the robots, but he died far faster than Immonar.
Strategy execution: nothing special to watch out for.
The fight
To optimize dps, we focused one add, then the other, while cleaving boss. If an add was still alive when new ones spawned, we ignored it in order to not fall further behind.
Annihilators and Decimators are not dangerous. For Demolishers, I split the damage with the tanks if I had the debuff.
It was a relaxing break between Immonar and the next big difficulty.

Logs:
WarcraftLogs
Preparation
Requirements
Comp: after testing, we needed 2 dps and 2 tanks. So Yenko took his warlock, and I finally got to use my turtle.
Damage: 12 minutes berserk. That's 4M dps on bosses, plus 0.3M dps for each Aman'thul set you do.
Survivability: the only difficult moment is Aman'thul. Also, since I was pet tanking the pet survivability was an issue, but Rextroy was on point. So we knew we would be fine unless someone stepped on another.
Difficulty
Strategy design: it took us about 10 tries to get the strategy right, and a few more to kill them.
Strategy execution: mistakes could have happened if we weren't careful, and would have definitively lead to a wipe. So, it was hard, but nothing soloers and/or mythic raiders aren't used to.
The fight
The fight was divided in bosses and adds.
For bosses, we needed them separated. Pet could take aggro on spawn but could not get aggro back if it was lost, and once Paladin had aggro he kept it until the end of the fight. If Rextroy had aggro, he kept it. And two active mobs on Rextroy meant a wipe. So we had to use the following rotation:
1. Asara on Rextroy, Noura on Lebohaum.
2. Asara on Rextroy, Diima on Lebohaum, Noura (inactive) on Lebohaum
3. Diima on Rextroy, Noura on Lebohaum, Asara (inactive) on Rextroy
4. Asara on Rextroy, Noura on Lebohaum, Diima (inactive) on Rextroy
In short, turtle always tanked Noura and Rextroy always tanked Asara. Diima was tanked first by the pet then by Rextroy.
For the adds, Kaz'goroth was killed by Yenko since it was optimal for overall damage, while Golganneth and Norgannon were mostly ignored.
For Aman'thul, I kept my burst so I could solo kill one of them, while Yenko and Rextroy killed another. Then we killed one then the other. Stacks can be removed with immunities or spellwarding, if used near the end of the debuff.
We killed the boss before the second Aman'thul, but we had the time to kill them had they spawned earlier.

Last bosses
The last bosses were really hard. We made separate videos for them.
瓦里玛萨斯
This boss is really bad for soloing (or trioing. Trioting?) because he's a gear check. As such, he requires 7.06M dps. So we skipped him since even with 3 dps he was undoable. It would have been fun if it weren’t the case.

Logs:
WarcraftLogs
Preparation
Requirements
Comp: This boss requires one DH tank, one pet class and one dps with low agro or aggro reset.
Damage: 12 minutes berserk. Counting adds and transition time, that's about 3.8M damage required.
Survivability: Hard. Tank had to play very well not to die, and dps had to survive without defensive legendaries.
Difficulty
Strategy design: so many tries to get it right. We had to test if a 2 tank strat was possible (no), then we had to figure out the new comp, then the strat.
Strategy execution: very hard. The DH (Yenko) had a very delicate job, I played with no defensive legendaries so no margin for error, and the DK (Rextroy) had to not overaggro my pet.
The fight
On our first tries we wanted to check if he was 2-tankable. The issue was his rend punting tanks off the platform. We couldn't soak as 3 or I died. If he hit two targets, they would be sent at the very edge of the platform, and one tank had to dodge the foe breaker. So 2-tanking was extremely hard and destroyed the tank's dps.
However, I knew he could be solo tanked because of a small tweet by Mionee reading "Aggramar wipe at 76% after 12minutes". So I told myself, "we'll use her strat". She was very kind to share with us that the DH jumping off the platform would cause the current spell in the combo to interrupt. So we tried it and the DH died a lot. It turns out that it's really hard not to fall and you had to do it 2-3 times per technique. So, in other words, Mionee's strat required us to do a very difficult jump 30 times in a row. And she nailed it. That's Mionee for you
To avoid spending too many endless nights on this boss, we decided to have the DH jump before the technique and let my pet tank it like a champ. Seriously, he took no damage, and can even survive tanking the boss for a while (I can solo Aggramar to 80% but can't solo the transition).
Which led us to the problem of the third dps. We needed a hunter or a pet class (maybe a rogue with vanish could work). Rextroy had an unholy DK (pet class). But that removed our semi-healer from the group.
So, aggro was managed this way:
When Yenko wanted to lose aggro and/or destack, he would jump off the platform.
I put everything in my pet - talents, legendaries, gameplay - to make him deal as much damage as possible for aggro.
Rextroy maximized his pet damage too and went more sustained damage than burst, in order to not overaggro the turtle.
The phases were pretty easy except for the tank in that regard.
The intermission was the main issue here. We had to make sure no adds exploded, I had to survive incoming damage, and my pet had to tank one add - who hits way harder than aggramar - and not die (or DK went poof).
If we numbered the embers clockwise, Yenko did embers 1 and 2, Rextroy add 3, I trapped 6 and killed 5, then me and Rextroy killed 4. That way we were already together to kill the big add. I had to keep my pet alive through CDs, and use immunity to heal up once I was about to die.
The tank died at the end but my pet can survive around 2 minutes 30 if last stand is available, so we still finished the boss.

Argus requires way more dps than 3 players can do so we tried to survive
狂暴
. Berserk can not be survived though since it lasts forever, and it makes his "end of all things" cast uninterruptible. So we decided to beat the unbeatable berserk timer.

Logs:
Stacking pulls and down
Preparation
Requirements
Comp: one tank, one hunter (or class with aggro reset) and one warlock (for survivability).
Damage: berserk is 12 minutes with 1 minute of RP. It requires 6.81M dps.
Survivability: the tank will get 20+ stacks of the Scythe. For the buff stacking process full defensive is suggested, but for the kill I still used dps trinkets.
Difficulty
Strategy design: we quickly went to the stacking strat since berserk didn't work. Given that tries lasted 40-50 minutes, we did a lot of theorycrafting. All in all, this was less complicated than some other bosses to design.
Strategy execution: the strategy execution is not very hard for experienced dps, but Rextroy had a very hard job tanking 20+/40 stacks. For the buff stacking an error of 2 seconds on my part could mean having to restart from scratch. Survival is an issue in the later phases though.
The strategy wasn't completely finished yet when it came to the number of stacks and phases 3 and 4, but we got him like this with 0.2 seconds to spare, so it's a win :)
The fight
Pre-stacking:
In order to reach the dps requirements, we fought Argus without getting him to phase 2 until the room was filled with fog. During this time, the warlock wasn't present since if there are only two players the haste/versatility buff goes on the dps and the other on the tank.
The tank had to survive 20+ stacks of scythe, luckily it sometimes resets. He used full defensive gear for perfect uptime on his mitigation - he had 957 ilvl gear (his best is 976) in order to have 23% crit 31% haste and 80%
SOTR
. If he died I had to rez him immediately, then reset the boss to be safe.
The hard part was the boss reset. As soon as we got the 5-second buff countdown, the tank would suicide. Once he was dead, I would immune, grab the buff and FD immediately. Then drop a tar trap to pull the boss the instant he respawned.
We went for 55 stacks since we wanted him down in 2 minutes. We should have gone for 60 to be safe. As a hunter, I wouldn't have gained much dps anymore going over 65, since at that moment kill command's cooldown is exactly 2 GCDs.
Phase 1 and 2: we actually got them on our very first pull, but they are long. With the buff stacking strat, we used 20M dps to get over it quickly.
Phase 3: dps will take a lot of damage - Rextroy was healing me. When the weapon addd activate, Rextroy couldn't tank forever (without Heroism), and even with a soulstone there was a risk of multiple deaths.
The strat we devised was to have my turtle tank the sword add for around 40 seconds while Rextroy and Yenko killed the other with Heroism.
As it turns out, during our down I didn't grab aggro fast enough but according to Rextroy with Heroïsm it was a piece of cake since he had 100% uptime on his mitigation.
Adds will nuke the dps and their cast still needs to be interrupted, so I had to be careful with my survival - it's the main reason I went with double defensive legendaries.
If we had wiped on the next try I wouldn't have used turtle at all and we would just have Hero'd and killed the sword add, and Rextroy would have tanked the sword adds on a third one for more dps.
Phase 4: same as in normal, but we have a lot of rezzes in the tree. I split the orbs with Yenko - he could have done all of them, but he had to keep running around because of falling embers. Spellwarding can kill block one soul bomb. Dps must try to survive as much as possible to avoid losing dps, and Rextroy survived 40 stacks because he's that skilled. We elected to ignore the last orbs and just grab the rez, but it nearly killed Rextroy.
In the end, we got him with 0.5 seconds before a 8M cast - just in the nick of time.
If we redid it, we would stack more buffs to avoid hitting berserk, focus less dps on the orbs, and if we ignored the orbs, Rextroy would have used bubble.

Final thoughts
Durendil
That was fun! Wracking my head on how to possibly trio bosses, especially those I was sure couldn't be trio'd, was very fun, but once I got to test the strategies with Rextroy - who was great to work with despite his disappearing skills - we quickly surpassed those difficulties in our desire to surpass all challenges, especially Immonar which was the boss I was the least confident about. Best bosses were Immonar, Coven, Aggramar and Argus - the hard ones. Eonar holds a place in my heart because I really had no idea what I was doing for half the fight.
This project was a first for me, and I loved it. I am definitively up for something similar next expansion.
Rextroy
It has been an exciting experience to 3 man all of the bosses in Antorus, overall I really like the difficulty curve. The earlier bosses are quite simple (even stacked up hounds for additional difficulty). But at the end you really have to think about strategies, and figure things out (such as the stacking of Argus buffs, to get Durendil to do 17M DPS).
The most enjoyable bosses out of all must have been Coven / Aggramar / Argus. Because of the different tactics we went with, I also had to change to my DK for Aggramar, since we would have lacked the DPS if we went double tank.
Yenko
It was a fun experience to 3 man Antorus and it was refreshing and a nice challenge which the game kind of lacks in a way really. Making these odd strategies is fun and seeing them succeed is a sense of achievement. I'm not geared on any char or that good in my eyes compared to Durendil and Rextroy, and honestly 3 manning the bosses with people that know what they are doing went better than with pugs.
Editor's note: he was pulling 2M dps on his warlock and survived Immonar and Aggramar on two different tanks without healers.
Acknowledgments
I would like to thank most of all Rextroy, then Yenko and DarkSatan. Also my guildies Drafalgar, Tsubakki and Reinhearz who helped me try out some strats for theorycrafting, as well as Mionee. Finally, I'd like to thank the Wowhead team for the platform.
About the author
Durendil
has been playing his hunter since Vanilla. During WotLK, he decided to try soloing because the alternative was playing another class. He started with BC heroic dungeons, and followed with
熔火之心
and
卡拉赞
. It was then that he ran out of guides, so he started creating his own strategies for Zul'gurub (level 60 version), Zul'Aman (level 70 version) and
预言者斯克拉姆
, which required nature resistance gear. He rose as one of the top two hunter soloers along with
Caribald
, and made a name for himself in the hunter community thanks to his first hunter
solo of The Lich King
. He continued soloing expansion to expansion, getting the first hunter kills on
拉格纳罗斯
(10-25H),
雷神
(normal and heroic), and
海拉
. During that time Caribald retired from soloing and
Shoot
made his debut.
He plans on keeping on soloing and pushing his hunter to his limits. He has no plans to play another class, or a petless hunter. He is excited for BFA because the raids of Legion will be fun to solo, and because the introduction of Mythic+ has given him greater quantities of challenging soloing material.
